Review: Northern banger brigade GTA are marking a big old decade in the game with this walloping collection of beats across the spectrum. Delivered in 10s over five different themes from classics to remixes to floor-scorchers, the end result is an excitingly varied and feisty 50-strong spread of drum & bass perspectives where vibes range from Conrad Subs' utterly gully jungle vibes on his remix of Sl8r's 'Facking Jungle M8' to the thundering dancefloor wallops of Cliques' remix of the label bosses 'Pico De Gallo'. No strong is left unturned throughout the collection as we're just as like to be refreshed by liquid (Pyxis & Maykor's 'Guardian Angel') as we are flattened by venomous, laser-kissed neuro blasts (ICU's remix of 'Rip The Roof Off') Crash bang wallop what an album.
Review: Madness from Manchester! Sola's Grand Theft Audio wrap up another stunning year with this truly epic VA that - as the title Full Spectrum nicely hints - reflects and celebrates the full dynamic range of this beautiful thing we call drum & bass. Over the 33 track range we're treated to all manner of treats and beats from dreamy disco-like flexes (B-Plexx - 'Cynical') to wild, untamed howlers that melt clothes within seconds of you hearing the bass (Replete - ' Theia'). There's so much swagger in between, too. Hologram's G'd up 'Make A Move' acts as the perfect opener while other cuts such as Korrode's futuristic dark funk stepper 'Alternate Universe', Voltone & Stuart Rowe's euphoric dancefloor bubbler 'Drift' and Tong8's soulful swooner 'Choice' all map out some of GTA's most exciting sonic parameters so far. Full spectrum by name, full flavour by nature.
Review: Full spectrum by name, widescreen badassery by nature: Sola's Grand Theft Audio imprint gears up for another epic end-of-year compendium with this inaugural sampler. Tengu takes the lead with the wig-melting 'Hellraiser' before Luka goes into a really interesting electro-style riffy bassline buzzcut 'Distance'. Elsewhere Replete goes full lawn mower mode on the diesel powered 'Theia' and Corrupted Mind's 'Error' brings the EP to a very interesting, twisted garage-inspired vibe. If these are anything to by, the whole VA is going to be utter fire.
Review: Following their belly-busting 'British Fry Up' EP earlier this year, UK duo Change Of Pace set the pace with this skin-rippling vocal anthem with Sammie Hall - 'Set The World Alight'. Comes in three powerful flavours. The original is a big dreamy breezy with springy breaks and subtle sense of the majestic while pyxis adds her bittersweet soulful signature. Looking for a little more dancefloor wallop and theatre? Head for Sola and Daida's twist and start setting the floor alight.
Review: Not content with serving up a massive album earlier this summer, GZ Audio boss and long-time GTA affiliate Guzi comes charge back into our collections with this humungous collab-fuelled EP. Featuring the likes of Freddy B, Zoner, Pyxis and Woolf, along with two killer originals, it's a full-flavoured experience that leaves no corner of D&B unexplored. Highlights include the acid thump of the title track 'Move On', the shimmering soul vibes of 'Be Strong' (with Zoner) and the deep house sensibilities of 'Finders Keepers' (with Pyxis). Get moving.
Review: Steal-up to wheel-up, Manny gang GTA get busy with their ninth Vibrations flex. As with previous collections, it's all about the burgeoning talent and the bruising beats as we're rinsed through Sola's full strength A&R spectrum. Highlights include the brazen stinkery of Guzi, Woolf & Plasmator's grizzly 'Every Little Thing', I.C.U's gargantuan filth-fest 'Compa' and Beskar and Sebotage's sizzling sci-fi skank-up 'Space Creatures'. And that's just the tip of this vibration... Feel the frequencies!
Review: Manchester's Sola return to their massive debut album from last year with this equally hefty remix collection featuring a wide range of impressive, high grade names. ESKR, Guzi, Cliques, Plastmator, Shayper, Pyxis and Antagonist are just some of the top shelf names at play here as we're whipped across the dancefloor continuum relentlessly in a similar spirit to the original album. Every remix is a highlight but Cliques' devastating twist of 'Pico De Gallo', Clarkey's ultra-stomp twist on 'Trust Grit', Antagonist's deep rebuild of 'The Drift' the Perplex's BBK-level tear-up of 'Maintain Thine Hue' are some of the biggest stand-out bangers on here. Time to get starry eyed once again!
Review: Manchester mandem Sola rally up the troops for their label's largest VA to date - the 'Fresh Music Annual 2022'. Emphasis on the word fresh; the tracklist reads like who's who in new-gen D&B from Shayper to Vektral to Perplex to Nvrsoft to Plasmator and many more in between. Complete with some wise and slightly older sages in the game such as AJ Mutated, Dilligent Fingers, ESKR and K Jah, the album packs a powerful punch and does an excellent job reflecting the whole spectrum of the genre from tear-up dancefloor danger ('Crank It') to cosmic ('Surgical') to emotional and funky ('A Bad Feeling') to classic late 2000s hurricane soul music ('Slow') A beautiful snapshot of a vital scene in the best health right now, big up Grand Theft Audio.
Review: The hardest working troupe to come out of Manchester in recent years, Grand Theft Audio bossmen Sola finally reveal their debut album. Proud champions of all styles and subgenres of drum & bass, their album 'Stars Align' brings together everything the trio are about... And plenty more. Highlights include the absolutely firing Latin banger 'Pico De Gallo', the glitchy Opiou-inspired cosmic beats piece 'Turncloak' and the absolutely firing 'Amazonia' which brings together pretty much every flavour of D&B all in one track. All this and plenty more, Sola have delivered something very special right here.
Review: Grand Theft Audio 50 LP is the largest project in the label's history; a 50 track album featuring 25 brand new ones, and another 25 from their extensive back catalogue. They released them over four editions in late 2021,but here it is in its full entirety and, again, we'd like to stress that it's a whopping 50 tracks! From the fierce breakbeat science of Sl8r & Somebody Else's "Facking Jungle M8", to the dark side jump-up of Nothing To Lose & Echidna's "Cyclops" (Intraspekt remix), the widescreen cinematic rhythms of Cynical Gene's "Emerge" and Nvrsoft & Sola's emotive vocal drum 'n' bass roller "Falling" - there's plenty more where they came on the Manchester label's impressive celebratory compilation.
Review: It's been a fairly epic few weeks for Grand Theft Audio as they unleashed several editions in their 50 LP. Here, we have the fourth and final edition which sees them go out all guns blazing - seriously! A whopping six tracks on this one: Nvrsoft & Sola's emotive vocal drum 'n' bass roller "Falling", the Full Cycle style stepper by Nothing To Lose, Echidna & Charlie B titled "Downpour" (feat Dubbul-O - Charlie B remix) and the widescreen breakbeat science of Raedford's "Tidal Groove" reminiscent of classic Optical are just some of the highlights.
Review: Set up seven years ago, Manchester's Grand Theft Audio Recordings releases quality music from across the drum and bass spectrum. Their Grand Theft Audio 50 LP is the largest project in the label's history; a 50 track album featuring 25 brand new ones, and another 25 from their extensive back catalogue. Now into part two of the four part series, we've got the dark side jump-up of Nothing To Lose & Echidna's "Cyclops" (Intraspekt remix), the stadium sized beats of Jenske's "4AM" that would make even Sigma stand up and notice, while Manuva gets into some neurofunk intricacies on "Hold Me Down" among others.
Review: Set up seven years ago, Manchester-based Grand Theft Audio Recordings is a label releasing quality music from across the drum & bass spectrum. The Grand Theft Audio 50 LP is the largest project in the label's history; a 50 track album featuring 25 brand new tracks, and another 25 from their extensive back catalogue. On part one of the four part series here, we've got the fierce breakbeat science of Sl8r & Somebody Else's "Facking Jungle M8", the minimal steppa "Run Dat" by Erbman in the vein of classic DJ Krust, as well as the emotive mentasms on darkside roller "Full Circle" by Dom Hz and the subterranean neurofunk of "Eski B's "Tsunami".
Review: Ready for the remix! Sola and Sammie Hall's massive 'Dreaming' EP gets the remix treatment from a whole slew of talents. Aries lights the fire with a killer twist on 'Close To You' as the euphoric intro drops into something very dark and foreboding. He's in good company as many other step up with fresh new versions: Rowney shows off his deep and uplifting side on 'Dreaming Of You', Grand Theft Audio's own Vektral adds a whole new level of electrified grit to 'The Stars', American rising talent Airglo takes us around the solar system with his take on 'Lost In The Moment' while Jfal closes the EP with a savage tear-up twist on 'Hangar'. Bumping.
Review: Give us a signal! Rising filth merchant Jfal unleashes his inner naval petty officer and steers us in the direction of five big-chinned dancefloor bruisers on Grand Theft Audio. Laced with drama and a big Trex-style riff, 'Quartermaster' packs an unforgettable hook and sets the heavyweight scene for the whole EP. Other highlights include the classic rave blasts and wubbly bass tones of 'Here For You' and stark futurism and freaky spaciousness of 'Little Red Button'. Salute.
Review: Bringing the feels: Grand Theft Audio bosses Sola link up with the ever-present skills of songwriter Sammie Hall for five barbed soul originals that are all steeped in heavy emotion. 'Close To You' sets the scene with a fastlane bassline, Hybrid Minds style keys and Sammie pouring her heart out. Elsewhere 'Dreaming Of You' takes us up above the clouds, 'Another Lesson' is a contemplative, piano-laced cut drifter, 'Can't Let Go' is the big dancefloor bruiser while 'Lost In The Moment' plays the all-important lighter-raising moment. Something for every stage of your set, Sola and Sammie have smashed this one.
