Grass Green

Crossing the divide between Disco and Groove based Deep House.
Auckland's Grass Green Recordings is New Zealand's home of deep house and disco with swing, soul and groove.
A vehicle for key Kiwi talents, including Reed & Radley, Monkey Boots and Darren Clark, the label is back from hiatus with multiple releases from its existing roster and a string of other artists waiting in the wings.
Key releases to date have been championed by heavy hitters in NZ and around the world.
They include Monkey Boots' Whitworth Strut, a tribute to the glory days of Manchester's Hacienda Club remixed by legendary DJ Greg Wilson, and Impossible Need.

Late Nite Lovin - (6:42) 120 BPM
Review: Kiwi producer Darren Clark made his debut on the New Jersey-based Omi Tutu imprint but has since worked mostly with New Zealand labels Grass Green and Them On The Hill, and here he returns to the former with a three-track EP that opens with the slightly atypical 'Brother', a slice of dusty, midtempo Balearic soul. But we're back on more familiar ground with the uptempo and exuberant 'Enchantment' and its classic 70s disco stylings, before the EP's completed by 'Late Nite Lovin', a suitably sultry and unhurried end-of-night smoocher with a vocal redolent of the Walrus Of Love himself.

Step Into My Life
Step Into My Life - (7:07) 124 BPM Hot
Minter 4 Tha Munter - (6:23) 123 BPM
Review: After a near eight-year hiatus, Andy Vann has reactivated his Auckland-based imprint, Grassgreen Recordings. The label's first release since early 2015 comes from long-term roster member (and bona fide house veteran Chris M Reed under a new alias, Mono/Loco. The former DiY Discs and 3 Beat Music artist is celebrating 20 years as a producer this year, and there's something pleasingly timeless about title track 'Step In To My Life', a chunky, low-slung house number rich in sampled horns, swinging beats, jammed-out electric piano motifs and sparkling, undulating lead lines. 'Minter 4 Tha Munter', meanwhile, boasts even more 'classic house' flavour, with warming keyboard riffs, tactile synth-bass and sultry synth-strings riding crunchy, unfussy, subtly nostalgic beats. No frills house music to keep dancefloors happy - what's not to like?

A Lullaby For Spiderman (The Phantom Flan Flinger remix) - (9:28) 100 BPM
Review: Auckland's Grass Green are at it again with another series of smooth and sexy (not to mention cheeky!) slow-mo house re-edits. And fair play; they're executed pretty darn well, even the man himself Greg Wilson named this in some of his top choice of re-edits of 2013. First up "Just Here to Raise Ya" is yes, you guessed it: The Happy Mondays. Shallow Taxi's "Melody of Creed" reworks M People, but it's good, trust us! Finally and the standout here is Monkey Boots at it again but this time with "Lullaby for Spider Man" reworking The Cure's classic of yes you guessed it: "Lullaby".

Descenders Of The Faith - (7:35) 125 BPM
Headstones - (7:41) 126 BPM
Fields Of May - (7:32) 123 BPM Hot
Review: According to the press release accompanying this latest single from New Zealand duo Reed and Radley, lead cut "Descenders of the Faith" is "the sound of a late '80s warehouse rave invaded by an android Liberace, as re-imagined by Buck Rogers in the 25th century". In other words, it's a retro-futurist gem, where classic house pianos and bubby electronics meet driving beats and sweaty late night charm. There's more of a straightforward, dub-flecked deep house feel to "Headstones", before "Fields Of May" takes a trip back to the halcyon days of house music via a chunky Chicago bassline, New Jersey grooves and classic Italian house riffs.

Whitworth Strut Part 2

Monkey Boots - "Hold Back The Night" (original) - (8:31) 113 BPM
Review: Auckland's deep delving duo Monkey Boots are back with a new version of "Whitworth Strut", this time reworked by disco royalty himself, Greg Wilson. Under Wilson's guidance the track becomes like a whooshy, subaquatic disco swim with tides of touchy feely loops washing all over the listener in blessed-out joy. Elsewhere we get a new track "Hold Back The Night", which is a lean and mean slice of linear electro funk (also successfully dubbed out by Andy Hart) that clocks in at a whopping eight minutes!

A Lullaby For Spiderman (The Phantom Flan Flinger remix - free track) - (9:28) 100 BPM
Review: "Mind Biscuit": Something tasty for your brain to chew on while your feet mulch up the dancefloor. Auckland crew Monkey Boots lay down two jack-slapping originals that dig deep into the true deep house psyche. "Impossible Need" comes with smoky vocal and smouldering bass vibes on the groove while "Yearning For You" slaps with a lighter sensation, all wafty minor key organs and soul-stirring vocals. Remix-wise Reed & Radley subvert "Yearning For You" with a little more space and reverbed magic while The Phantom Flan Flinger gets all reflective and shimmering on the Balearic bomb "Lullaby For Spiderman". Beautiful.

Keep On (original mix) - (7:42) 123 BPM Hot
Dont Let Me Down (original mix) - (7:28) 121 BPM
Keep On (Shallow Taxi Club hard dub) - (7:12) 122 BPM
Review: Now based in New Zealand, Reed & Radley learnt their trade in northern England in the early 1990s. That probably explains the unashamed New Jersey garage/New York house sound of both "Keep On" and "Don't Let Me Down". Both are impeccable tributes to the Easy Street/early Strictly Rhythm sound, complete with hip-wigglin' beats, choice vocal samples and fluid chords. "Don't Let Me Down" offers the added bonus of some classic organs and pianos amongst the skipping snares and classic vocal samples. As old-fashioned as it is, it's certainly an accurate tribute. The package is completed by a decent remix of "Keep On" from Shallow Taxi Club, whose "Hard Dub" sounds like Mr G doing NJ garage; an enticing prospect indeed.

Shape - (7:25) 106 BPM
Suzy (instrumental - Free Track) - (8:28) 118 BPM
Review: Given that Darren Clark has little history of releases behind him, this is a very assured and impressive EP. While the wide-eyed, deep house warmth of the title track - available in instrumental form as a free download - is good (particularly the woozy, hippy-ish vocals), it's actually "Memory Lane" that really stands out. Featuring more distinctly Balearic vocals, a baggy air and some delicious disco percussion, it seems designed to soundtrack Adriatic boat parties and Mediterranean sunsets. Almost as good is the deeper "Shape", which chugs along on a wave of building chords, dense percussion and filtered bass. It's one of those tracks you just want to get lost in, sometime around four in the morning.

Review: Further proof of the blurred boundaries between nu-disco, deep house and '90s house revivalism is provided by this jaunty four-tracker from Auckland-based studio buff Shallow Taxi Club. There's much to admire about the crisp, vintage house pianos, twittering melodies and bumpin' beats of opener "Flashback", but it's the deep, Crazy P-ish nu-disco groovery of "Mark My Words" that most impresses. Choose between the baggy 'Disco Edit' and a delightfully touchy-feely rework from Greg Wilson faves Monkey Boots. The latter also turn "Melody of Creed" into a gorgeous slice of shuffling deep house bliss.
