Review: Dance music at times gets criticised for being apolitical, but the conflict in Ukraine has inspired artists across the underground spectrum to contribute their time and music. This compilation is testament to house and techno artists' ability to rally behind a worthy cause. Issued on French label Griffe, it features a diverse range of tracks, including the slinky electro house of Braik's "Chanel 1996" and old school organs on Botwin's "Retro Gamino". Buraye's "Isolation" is based on moody breaks and a searing bass, while in contrast, C.ru.z' "My Own Sant Joan" sees the compilation take a more menacing turn, courtesy of an ominous bass and sharp percussion. Irrespective of the aesthetic twists and turns, this is an essential work that for the sake of Ukraine, needs our support.

Review: Following in the footsteps of well-known names like Nicolas Lutz, Braik aka Brian C is the latest tech-house name to come from Uruguay. As this release on the Parisian label Grifffe demonstrates, Braik has developed a distinctive style; "Breakund" resounds to chiming bells with a woozy undercurrent and clipped, rolling drums. Meanwhile "Buildin" features a similar rhythmic construct, but replaces bells with tripped out tones and vocal snatches. "Intentos Fallidos" heads down a darker route, and is centred on a moody bass, while on "Jack O Lantern", Brian offers up his own version of acid, with 303s peppered in the offbeat rhythm and rolling drums.

Review: Griffe is a new label, and if Agitation, its debut release is anything to go by, rest assured that we'll be hearing a lot more from it. First up is upcoming producer Charlou, who draws on European techno-trance heritage for the robust rhythm and sleek synths of "Egomercenary". The producer's "X-Station", which features Steve Marie, is inspired by that great French trance artist Emanuel Top as they deliver a gurgling 303 workout. Botwin's approach is somewhat different on "Perverse Consciousness" and "Yellow Hole" which see acid lines unravel to rolling drums and crisp break beats, while "Trance 94" focuses on a visit to the heady days of the mid-90s for a mind-bending psychedelic trip.
