Review: Hankies at the ready... This 30 track best-of set is Ground Level's final release. Celebrating eight years of fuelling the breaks scene with exciting and authentic original material, the label boss Andy McAllister has decided to close its doors and get busy on a new project called Four Three Six. As with any well-selected best of compendium, each and every track is a highlight. But if we're going to pick a few that really sum up the unique spirit of Ground Level then chow straight down on the Orbital-on-triplets vibe of Stylus Rex's "Spangle Wagon", Rebel Sketchy's super-slam bass jam "The Ride" and Andy's very own "The Theme". With its mischievous horns, hype-rising riff and techy undertones, it acts as a great final salute to a game in which they've scored many many wins. Ground Level will be sorely missed.

Crushin/Whack Job/Once More Round The Yard
Crushin - (3:58) 130 BPM Hot
Whack Job - (4:36) 129 BPM
Once More Around The Yard - (4:16) 128 BPM
Review: More muscular swag from Ground Level's Hero. The hook-heavy "Crushin" is like the work of Tiga, LFO and Rennie Pilgrem squeezed into one sweaty, rolling mess. "Whack Job" gets us even filthier with its choppy vocals, trappy snares and pit bull bass barks. "Once More Around The Yard" closes the show and does its best to clean the grime off us with its evangelistic pianos before the playful drop into a subverted EDM drum roll riff gets us all grubby again. Which, to be fair, is exactly how we like it.

Sketchwerk
Everywhere I Go - (5:09) 132 BPM Hot
Rebel Sketchy - "Unplug" (feat Agne Motie - VIP) - (4:47) 129 BPM
Kwerk - "Are You?" - (4:35) 130 BPM
Review: Breaks power-combo Sketchy and Kwerk apply their tightest tricks to this ace trio of tracks. "Everywhere I Go" is a thundering 4/4 bass attack with added Nile Rodgers style guitar splashes, a hooky vocal sample and mass spatterings of lavish funk. "Unplug" follows. A solo jam from Sketchy himself, its two-step rhythm shuffles while the bass flips uncontrollably like a bouncy ball. Kwerk closes the show with "Are You?"; complete with Todd Edwards style cut up vocals, piano teases and a sweet sunshine vibes, it will warm the floors on the chilliest of seasons. Hard werk pays off!

Kamikaze
Kamikaze - (5:40) 129 BPM
Kamikaze (Andy McAllister remix) - (5:25) 127 BPM
Backburner - (4:47) 129 BPM Hot
Review: The general problem with being a kamikaze is that, having dropped the bomb, you don't really get to hang around and drop any more. Despite the title of this, his latest EP, Texan breaks master Joe C has dropped many dancefloor bombs and will hopefully continue to do so for years to come. Tough ghetto beats escalate in a whirlwind of vocal snippets, nasty bass and tense melody on the title track (a melancholic electro pop vibe is taken on the Andy McAllister remix), but the mayhem returns for an almost early Chemicals-style mash up on "Backburner".

Celestial Bodies / Hula Hoop / Ghetto Stomp
Celestial Bodies - (4:11) 129 BPM Hot
Hula Hoop - (4:31) 129 BPM
Ghetto Stomp - (4:20) 130 BPM
Played by: Andypop, DJ Hero
Review: A trio of breakbeat treats from Ground Level's most consistent hero. "Celestial Bodies" offers a wry nod at the legacy of LFO thanks to its insistent waspy acid line and smouldering bass warps before dropping into a timeless synth hook and Stantons-style booty bass section. "Hula Hoop" is a much more stripped-back affair, allowing the bass to play the lead role as it builds from slimline and sinewy to a chubby walloper of unhealthy proportions. "Ghetto Stomp" brings us to a fitting climax. Dynamically built to offer more and more drama on every 16, let the robot voices and ricocheting tech shots lead you through every shade of dancefloor darkness.

Review: Emerging from the Midlands in 2007 with the telling-it-like-it-is Serious Wobble by Stylus, Ground Level has rapidly risen to the top of the bass leagues. Now to celebrate its seventh year of success, main man Andy McAllister has provided this sizzling hot mix featuring 13 bangers. It's quite a trip and some of our fave pit stops on the way include the deep 'n' jazzy baile-ton of Zap! Pow! Die!'s "Bounce (Fuck This Mix)", the ethereal dubby 2step of "It Feels So Good" by John Bradley and the beefy-bassed, hypno laser jam "Hula Hoop" by DJ Hero.

Candy Cruizin/Comfort Zone/Page 136
Candy Cruizin' - (4:51) 128 BPM Hot
Comfort Zone - (4:12) 129 BPM
Page 136 - (3:29) 132 BPM
Review: Superslam sonics from Ground Level veteran DJ Hero, each of these three cuts could power an electric car for well over 100,000 miles and still have charge left for more. "Candy Cruizin" is as sweet as it sounds; galvanised by rifling-like stabs that nod to the old school while remaining wholly futuristic, it's instant throw-down material. "Comfort Zone" takes a selection of big room (insistent riffs, razor-diced vocal stabs) and trap motifs (booming subs and naked kicks) and processes them through the breakbeat's industrial strength party machine. Finally we hit "Page 136" where we're instantly submersed in rich textures of mechanical gutter funk, lazer-reaching synths and alien screaming bass rips. Heavy.

Ground Level Summer Vibes Part 2
Rebel Sketchy - "Freq Out!" - (6:20) 133 BPM Hot
Joe C - "Monster" - (5:47) 129 BPM
DJ Hero - "Juxtapose" - (4:42) 129 BPM
Review: The summer might be a dim and distant memory but that hasn't stopped Ground Level from flying the sunshine flag into the autumn months. Rebel Sketchy launches proceedings with an uptempo jacking breaks joint laced with lavish disco flourishes and the fartiest bassline you'll hear all season. Joe C ups the aggy factor with a snub-nosed acid bassline and tonked up beef beats. DJ Hero completes the set with the most uncompromising blend of the release. Fans of Elite Force or Meat Katie should be all over this; robust, glitchy and unrelenting it's an instant laser-fest with added piano surprises. There ain't no party like a Ground Level party.
