Review: The slow, gradual rise of the Guangzhou Underground imprint has mirrored that of China's emerging house scene, which it was set up - in part - to celebrate. The label's latest EP gathers together previously unheard cuts from label regulars present and future. Alex Agore, who had the honour of putting out the first EP on the imprint in 2014, impresses with the breezy, bouncy, soul-flecked, UK garage-inspired "No1Else", while Spangleman offers up a chunk of elastic, off-kilter house/funk fusion, in the shape of jammed-out shuffler "Access To Success". Band Of Misfits' take us back to the early '90s with the piano-heavy, disco-house bump of "Wanna Go Dancin", before Stijn Van Wijk rounds off a solid EP with the loose, analogue-sounding deep house shimmer of "Specter".

Review: Guangzhou Underground is a collective of DJs, promoters and a record label all based in Guangdong province, China. If you didn't' know about the rising bass scene in the East, you'd better keep up because there are some serious sounds being created there. The East West Bass Test compilation features 11 exclusive tracks from producers representing US, UK, Canada, China and Macau. Highlights include the scattershot electro beats and plucked melodies of "verity" by Merouac, the moody percussive roller "Vagabond" by KOROSTYLE and the woofer busting DnB of "Freq U" by Stranjah.

Review: Warn steps up to GU to cast an array of arcane sonic spells that fidget and flicker through myriad textures and genres. "Above Class Below Kingdom" disrupts a spiritual church sermon with mangled phone tones. "Errance" is a DE9-level dub techno affair with icy pads and a pebbledash of snares. "Panoptes" is grizzly steppy tech with clipped Modeselektor style stabs before "Dzungarian" shoves us back into the catacombs where chimes pierce the droning fog. "Abyssian Lovebird" coerces us from the shadows with synthetic shards of piano sunlight and a wriggling bassline that wouldn't go amiss in a Funk D'Void cut. Finally we arrive at the party with an Asian flavoured arpeggio hook and samurai sharp drum arrangement. Deliciously detailed.

Review: China's house scene is still in its infancy, but it's good to see new label Guangzhou Underground promising to represent it worldwide. This debut release, though, comes from experienced European producer Alex Agore. Aside from the deliciously melodious closer, "Mistakes" - a trip into '80s instrumental slow jam territory - Agore goes straight for the jugular, delivering a series of bumpin' cuts that take much influence from vintage US house. "Do It" is positive and smile inducing, with heavy organs and sampled horns combining well with driving beats. There's more of a DJ Duke-meets-UKG feel about the booming "Tygah Style", while "I Miss Your Luv" sounds like a classic Night Grooves release dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century.
