Mental Fortitude
Take Me Away - (5:41) 135 BPM
The Hedge - (6:07) 126 BPM
Digital Forest - (6:46) 128 BPM
Review: Dukwa follows 2022's Matter Of Time on Peggy Gou's Gudu label with this fine, musical release. "Take Me Away" resounds to metallic snares and a percussive rhythm. Against this backdrop, he weaves in blurry, woozy synths, making for a killer Detroit techno track. On "The Hedge", Dukwa follows a different path. Set to a jacking groove, he factors in jazzy keys and raw electronic riffs that build and drop through the arrangement. "Digital Forest" marks another shift. Like the other tracks, the rhythm is raw, but Dukwa's use of electronic bass and breezy melodies is sure to set it apart.

Hold My Hand - (6:28) 119 BPM Hot
Review: Akua Grant's outings as Lady Blacktronika are always worth checking, and her first full outing on Peggy Gou's Gudu label is no different. Opener 'Baby I Got It', for example, is full-on aural madness - a bombastic blend of beefy, redlined house drums, ghostly chords, pitched-up vocal samples and discordant minor key melodies - while 'Sing The Blues' is a deliciously drowsy chunk of wayward, dub-flecked deep house that's as beautiful as it is trippy. Arguably best of all though is the locked-in deep house hypnotism of closing cut 'Hold My Hand', which features some superbly soulful vocal samples, metronomic bass and spacey electronic textures.

Charge - (5:52) 132 BPM Hot
Nano - (5:51) 132 BPM
Review: Up next on Gudu is Matrefakt with a club-primed four-tracker. The title track is powered by a rolling groove and sharp, staccato drums, with these elements providing the basis for insistent bleeps and chopped up vocal samples. "Kubik" sees the duo draw on Chicago influences. Featuring rolling snares and pitch-bent samples, it makes for a compelling interpretation of classic sounds. "Charge" marks another shift in style. Going deeper than before, Matrefakt deploy dubbed out drums as a backdrop to introduce trippy synths. They build to a crescendo before dropping again, creating a euphoric effect. Lastly, "Nano" is a stripped back, minimal house workout, driven by a pulsating bass.

Review: Italian artist Matisa reveals her "Tongue" EP, a four-track wonder-work released on Peggy Gou's Gudu label. With a range that spans sun-kissed piano house to mid-tempo breaks, the EP showcases the broad range of Matisa's artistic spectrum, demonstrating her ascent as a one to watch in 2023. Each track represents a stage of her musical journey, as she opens up with the vocals expressions in "Tongue" that lead into heartfelt dedications to her parents in "Brunela" and "Lusia". "Sunrose", then, celebrates her love for flowers, signalling a musical journey that invites listeners to embark on an emotional voyage through Matisa's tones of love and romance.

Mogwaa - "11khz" - (5:31) 137 BPM
Hiver - "Lunar" - (5:23) 132 BPM
Salamanda - "Mockingbird" - (5:02) 110 BPM

Brain De Palma - "Road To Tatooine" - (6:24) 137 BPM
Lady Blacktronika - "He Can Never Love You" - (6:11) 115 BPM
Closet Yi - "Sonder" - (5:50) 138 BPM
Review: Peggy Gou's label delivers a compilation that features regular contributors to her label. Mogwaa's "11khz" resounds to a fusion of rolling, shaking drums and lush synths. Exploring this theme further, Salamanda's "Mockingbird" is more contemplative thanks to its combination of swirling melodies and downtempo drums. In contrast, the wonderful Hiver duo drop a crystalline electro track in the shape of "Lunar". The compilation also serves up some fine dance floor tracks: DMX Krew weighs in with the clubby, angular rhythms of "One Take", Brain de Palma's "Road to Tatooine" is a fine, wonky acid track - and Closet Yi's "Sonder" is a shimmering break beat track

Driven (Mr. Ho remix) - (5:29) 140 BPM Hot
Review: Korean electronic artist, Mogwaa, has released his second EP on Peggy Gou's Gudu label, titled 'Drifted,' featuring a remix by Klasse Werks founder, Mr. Ho. Mogwaa is one of Korea's most exciting contemporary artists, known for his diverse catalogue ranging from ambient to jungle. The 'Drifted' EP showcases Mogwaa's musical prowess with a faster tempo than his previous Gudu release. The opening track, 'Driven,' features a combination of chopped-up breaks and a relentless riff, living up to its title. 'Chances for Bounces' showcases Mogwaa's melodic abilities with synthesized voices and a Detroit-leaning bassline over an 808 groove. 'Rushing' takes the EP further into peak-time territory with an acid bassline and expertly crafted automation. Mr. Ho's remix of 'Driven' concludes the EP with dreamy techno vibes.

Altered Chords - (5:27) 129 BPM
U Ain't Really Down - (5:29) 134 BPM
I Love Juan - (6:39) 127 BPM
Review: After a whirlwind 2022, with releases on Super Rhythm Trax and Furthur Electronix, DMX Krew returns to Gudu. The title track puts a heavy focus on Detroit techno, with a jerky bass and whooshing synths providing the stage for Ed DMX to drop a warbling, UR-style acid sequence. On "Altered Chords", that Motor City connection continues, as he deploys a walking funk bassline with chilling strings. In contrast, "U Ain't Really Down" is an outlier. Harder and distorted, it resounds to coruscating analogue riffs rather than studied musicality. However, it's only a temporary divergence: the snaking groove of "I Love Juan" is right up there with the Model 500 innovator's own creations.

Played by: Dukwa
Review: Known for his releases on Bosconi and Numbers, Dukwa now brings his inimitable sound to Peggy Gou's Gudu. "Prune" is a driving affair, with Dukwa dropping electronic riffs and mournful piano keys over a driving groove. "Vox" continues in this vein, with Dukwa putting a focus on ghostly breakdowns, dropped in between a grinding, heads-down rhythm. On "Jepoardize", a similar sound prevails but with the key difference that it unravels over a leftfield rhythm and abstract percussive ticks. "Nuvola" is an outlier here; dusty analogue synths play out over skipping beats, making for a deeper, more esoteric take on Dukwa's sound.

Spatial Bliss - (6:18) 122 BPM
Fizz - (6:38) 125 BPM
Cloudride - (6:05) 122 BPM
Review: Coming across like a mixture of Soichi Terada's sublime deep house and the pacy rhythms of late 90s UK techno, the title track of Mogwaa aka Seungyoung Lee's debut release on Gudu is a distinctive affair. He slows down the pace somewhat on the robust rhythms of "Cloudride", but the cosmic vibes remain, articulated by easy-listening keys and swirling synths. "Spatial Bliss" sees the South Korean producer explore a more chilled approach, with snappy drums and a laid-back groove underpinning blissed out melodies, while on "Fizz" Mogwaa deploys a chilling string sequence over sparse electro 808s - a suitably futuristic finale to this spellbinding release.

I Go (DJ Koze remix) - (5:29) 124 BPM
I Go (Maurice Fulton remix) - (6:18) 114 BPM
I Go (DJ Koze remix - edit) - (6:42) 124 BPM
Review: Released last year, 'I Go' saw Peggy Gou in Italo-disco-influenced synth-pop mode, with psychedelic acid lines, sweet South Korean vocals and attractive melodies rising above a Bobby Orlando-esque bassline. Here the track is given a new lease of life by a trio of high-profile producers. Belgian behemoths Soulwax do a terrific job in re-inventing the track as a retro-futurist, warehouse-ready house epic - all muscular sequenced bass, bustling drums, rave-igniting stabs and hands-in-the-air intent. DJ Koze does a lovely job of re-framing 'I Go' as a bubbly, bright and breezy nu-disco number, while Maurice Fulton delivers one of those killer re-rubs based around his funky, cut-up bass guitar lines, Nile Rodgers guitar licks and sparse-but-snappy percussion.

Review: After a decade spent dashing between labels including Curle Recordings, Polifonic, Fides and Bukhari, Hiver has parked their sonic spaceship in the virtual docking bay of Peggy Gou's Gudu imprint. The Italian twosome are in typically far-sighted and futurist mode throughout, first unveiling a surging, rush-including slab of piano-laden Italian dream house/acid-flecked sci-fi techno fusion ('The Initiative'), before effortlessly switching to sparkling, super-sonic electro ('Vapour'). The Italian twosome then blur the boundaries between electro and techno with the gorgeous musical star-shower that is 'Entangle'. To close out proceedings, they wrap a tactile, squeezable techno groove in cascading electronic motifs and psychedelic, acid-style tweakery. In a word: ace!

O.W.D. (Once Were Dancers) - (6:52) 68 BPM
Review: Ukranian producer Brian De Palma's recent debut on Peggy Gou's GUDU imprint, Call Me By Your Nail, was quietly impressive. This speedy sequel is, if anything, even better, with the sometime Rush Hour and Dekmantel contributor bouncing between sparkling, synth-driven, melody-rich jacking house (the gorgeous, '80s synth-pop influenced brilliance of 'IQarus'), kaleidoscopic blends of mid-'80s Pet Shop Boys and early Orbital ('Purple Brain') and futurist techno smothered in 8-bit electronics, emotive chords, psychedelic electronics and rushing lead lines ('O.W.D (Once Were Dancers)'). The obligatory remix comes from fast-rising producer Deniro, who smothers 'IQarus' in emotive chords and waves of glittering electronics on a fine peak-time techno take.

Review: Next up on Peggy Gou's label is an offbeat release from Riff. The title track revolves around a jittery electro rhythm that plays host to quirky, Italo-style melodies and oddball synth lines. Borrowing from a range of influences, it makes for a distinctive track. The label has commissioned two fine remixes from DMX Krew. On the first version, the UK electro pioneer brings the melodies to the fore, setting them against steely drums and subtle snares. The extended take sees him focus more closely on the dance floor, as a snaking groove is fused with bubbling 808s and a pulsating bass, making for a killer future-retro jam.

Mahfudzot (I:Cube remix) - (6:34) 62 BPM
Review: The latest release Gudu is an idiosyncratic affair, with the title track setting a distinctive scene: based on a rolling groove, it sees Dea layer wave upon wave of sounds over staccato drums, a walking funk bass and crashing cowbells. On "Zaria Sto Chaos", Dea follows a different artistic trajectory. Utilising a pulsating disco groove and clipped drums for the track's basis, he drops celebratory piano keys and a mysterious vocal sample that winds its way through the arrangement. "Mahfudzot" also features indistinct vocals, with hypnotic chants wrapped around tribal drums - it makes for a left of centre take on modern disco. Rounding off the release is seminal French artist I:Cube with a suitably offbeat, dreamy take on "Mahfudzot".

Clockroom - (4:56) 128 BPM
Review: Not to be confused with Brian De Palma of Scarface or Whirlpool productions fame, Peggy Gou's emerging Gudu label introduces a new project and alias from Alexei Versino. The artist's various escapades so far include releases with Rush Hour, Dekmantel, Off Minor and Uzuri, with the Ukranain born producer taking inspiration from time spent on Egypt's Sinai Peninsula - perhaps audible on the title-track - with watery melodics and a constant groove leading the way in "Farout". Delving into something cut specifically for the club is "Particle Fever" with its deep, techy house mainframe, techno hi-hats and slight touches of dub. And for that real 1970s krautrock trip, check out the emotive bleeps and juicy synths of "Clockroom".

Review: JRMS is a new project between newcomer Joseph Cardone and Massimo Di Lena, a veteran who has released on Cadenza and Royal Oak. Issued on Peggy Gou's label, the project sees the duo deliver a pared back, gritty take on house music. The title track is a shuffling, drum-heavy track featuring repurposed rave stabs and a powerful sub-bass. "Shake" sees them take on board electro influences, with a squelchy low end supporting shuffling drums. Meanwhile on "3", the pair drop a percussive rhythm track that underpins detuned squelches and tight claps. Changing tact again, they deliver the tripped out "Solo", which is sure to work for DJs who like to play deeper.

Maurice Fulton - "Not Sure How I Would" - (6:02) 110 BPM
Maurice Fulton - "One Itself" - (5:20) 115 BPM
Review: Those who've met Maurice Fulton - or even just paid close attention to his career over the last couple of decades - will tell you that he seems to inhabit a totally different galaxy to anyone else. We're blessed, then, that he's once again touched down on 'Earth' and delivered a killer EP for Peggy Gou's Gudu label. He joins forces with the South Korean star on deliciously wayward opener "Jigoo", a retro-futurist, turn-of-the-90s style house number smothered in weird electronic noises, starry chords and liquid bass. "Not Sure How I Would" sees him dive into intergalactic jazz-funk territory - think trademark disco bass guitar, trippy noises, live sounding drums and effects for days - while "One Itself" is a skewed drum track laden with hand percussion hits and his trademark weirdo electronic noises.

Review: The second release on Peggy Gou's Gudu label comes from a reliable source: long-serving electro/techno fusionist Ed Upton AKA DMX Krew. Upton is in predictably fine form from the off, sprinting his way through the atmospheric late night chords, garage style organ motifs, bustling acid lines and jacking drums of "CJ Vibe". He moves further towards vintage Motor City techno territory on the lusciously melodious but percussively punchy peak-time skip of "DXIOO", before reaching for the boogie synths and proto-house drums on futurist electrofunk number "Don't You Wanna Play". To round things off, Upton brilliantly dips the tempo and layers up spacey melodies over classic analogue bass on "110 Series".
