Review: Originally released on Gynoid a few years ago, "Nucleus" gets the remix treatment here from a number of artists. First up is Broom himself with a version that focuses on a stepping, wiry rhythm and blasts of dub chords. Stefan Vincent's take is deeper as the Dutch producer takes the track down a Detroit route. Led by tight claps and a bubbling rhythm, its airy hooks make "Nucleus" sound positively atmospheric. A radically different approach is audible on Raiz' take; the US pair drop robust, sledgehammer kicks and washed out chords, littered with half-heard vocals. The last remix, from Ad-vanced Human, focuses on a rolling, percussive approach that is likely to be the most DJ friendly of them all.

Citizen One (Giorgio Gigli remix) - (8:42) 125 BPM
Citizen One (Fanon Flowers remix) - (7:16) 85 BPM
Citizen Two - (6:10) 127 BPM Hot
Review: Ben Mill steps from the shadows of his A&R job for Gynoid to deliver this killer techno release. "Citizen One" is an eerie, pulsing groove that veers into deep, dubbed out textures without losing its dance floor focus. "Citizen Two" meanwhile sees him maintain this atmospheric feeling, but applies it to a tougher backing track of spiky beats and sharp percussive bursts. Given his day job, it's not a surprise that Mill has selected two excellent remixers; Giorgio Gigli's version of "Citizen One" is powered by a dense bass that brings the listener to a tranced out, bleep-heavy place, while Fanon Flowers' take on the same track is more subtle. Starting with ticking percussion and subtle off-beats, the US producer puts a focus on Mill's textured sound scapes to make a mysterious, reflective track.

Dark Side Of The Spoon - (6:31) 129 BPM Hot
And Your Horse - (7:08) 128 BPM
Hallways - (4:44) 115 BPM
Review: Melbourne-based Ben Mill steps from Gynoid's A&R shadows to deliver this three-tracker. "Dark Side of the Spoon" will appeal to fans of Truncate and SP-X, its boulder-heavy beats and firing percussion underpinning incessant filtering and resonating bleeps. "And Your Horse" is more intense, as the Australian artist lays down a resonating, pulsating bass that envelopes the rhythm in wave upon wave of fuzzy filters. It makes for a hugely effective peak time track. Finally, there's the title track, where Mill explores a world of dark, ambient textures. It's an impressive parting shot from an artist who deserves much more recognition.

Spirit Resonance - (6:02) 128 BPM
Slave To The Sound - (5:59) 129 BPM
Review: Canadian producer in Berlin Mary Velo delivers three cuts that stay away from the dull tunneling approach that many of her contemporaries are putting out. The title track shows Velo's tracks still pack a heavy dance floor punch, but this time come encased in malevolent acid pulses. "Spirit Resonance" also draws on a classic influence and it sees her channel the system-levelling bass and hollowed out drums of her adopted hometown's dub techno heritage. Keeping the listener engaged right till the end, "Slave ToThe Sound" is a heads down, banging groove that uses Bodycode-style eerie organ riffs to stand apart from the drone bores.

Dynasty EP
Dynasty - (6:29) 129 BPM
Silent Hill - (6:34) 127 BPM Hot
Black Out - (6:51) 128 BPM
Review: Canadian in Berlin Mary Velo drops her best release yet for Gynoid. While previous outings have seen Velo take inspiration from dub techno and bleak post-Sandwell subsonics, there is a leaner, meaner dynamic at play here. It's clearly audible on "Dynasty", where tribal beats provide the backing for a brooding, pulsing bass and a hail of razor sharp hats. "Silent Hill" is just as menacing; although it takes inspiration from dub techno's spatial awareness, the sounds are eerie and disturbing rather than dreamy. Set to rattling percussive licks and raw acid lines, it makes for a compellingly dark sound. Finally, "Black Out" is a dramatic chord builder that recalls Len Faki or further back in time, classic Slam.

Review: Gynoid Audio has become a recognised name in techno largely down to the sheer output of music the label delivers on a regular basis. This week Gynoid reach their 100th release milestone which they've turned into a compilation featuring a trusted collection of emerging and well-established names. Starting with the former, Mary Velo, Lee Holman, 88uw and Wata Igarashi, each provide a deep, reverb-laden club track, with Holman providing the most colour with the acid spurting "Operative". Schooled support comes from Synwave boss Damon Wild and the dark control room bleeps he brings with "Lost Base", while Aubrey delivers the funkiest production of the compilation, "Trigger 45". But before any of this takes place, it's Advance Human, aka Gynoid's CEO, Simon Hi-Shock, that begins proceedings with the dubby "Reincarnation".

Review: The latest Gynoid release features a varied set of remixes from Advanced Human. From the deep chords and whiplash percussion of his take on Antonio De Angelis' "Inversion" to the rock hard beats and eerie bleeps of his take on Rraph's "R10" and the abrasive, robust take on Pjotr G's "Remote Execute", this collection showcases the Australian producer's harder side. But it also provides an insight into some of his house-based productions; his 'dark house dub' take on Jin Hiyama's "Drip Painting" is based on steely drums and dubby beats, while the remix of Ben Mill & Gracie Ho's "A Series Of Events" is a seductive jack track.

Fabryka
Fabryka - (6:10) 129 BPM Hot
Fabryka (Mary Velo remix) - (6:38) 127 BPM
Review: Originally inspired by Chicago house and Detroit techno, in recent years DJ Hi-Shock's newer material shows that he has gone down a different route. The title track starts off with surging chords, but these quickly turn distorted and frazzled as Hi-Shock adds in some shaking percussion and howling riffs, eventually reaching a frazzled crescendo. Mary Velo's remix is not as dramatic and if anything works the mood in a different direction. Starting off with raucous beats, it features the Canadian in Berlin's trademark drones leading the arrangement into a soft-focus denouement that is radically different to the original track's climax.

Review: Gynoid dig deep for volume three of their Reprise series, and first up is Mattias Fridell with "Temporal Axis" - a track that has enough techno funk and mechanical groove to make its way on to a Fachwerk record. New CLR stalwart Rebekah delivers a typically rigid remix to the smooth dub of Dark Chambers' "Flow", while label boss Advanced Human delivers "Deep Earth" a progressive track full of wood block percussion which starts techy, but morphs into something big room. Emerging Melbourne talent Ground Loop is then remixed by Full Panda boss Dasha Rush for "Hour 25", the most subdued track on the EP.

Review: The fearsomely prolific Gynoid Audio label from Australia returns with this sturdy business from Truncate. "31" is a particularly grooving number from one of the key champions of stripped down, raw techno, letting those devastatingly simple rhythms interlock and trail out into hypnotic eternity. DJ Hyperactive brings a touch more tone and pulse to his remix, adding some choice electronic tomfoolery into the mix for a more quirky end result. Jonas Kopp is serious about bringing some punchy, un-budge-able beats into the fray for his version, but he knows just when to let an extra layer of hat rip out for those energy ramp ups, and likewise when to hold back. Advanced Human & Black Hats team up for the last remix, whipping up a more brooding dub tone that contrasts with the percussive focus of the other tracks.

In The Mood For Dub - (7:12)
Review: The owner of Gynoid is the series' latest contributor, and Pure sees him shift the label's sonic goalposts. The title track is a mean, lean slamming track, but it sounds different to the slew of tough techno thanks to its tearing, relentless filter. By contrast, "In The Mood for Dub" is a deep, stepping affair, its heavy rhythms and breathy chords making for a reflective affair. Sitting somewhere in the middle is the Black Hats take on "Pure". Favouring a more laid back tempo and a dubby bassline, it retains the building filters, making for an intoxicating meeting of sounds.

Review: This latest installment in this compilation series sees Gynoid cast its net far and wide to bring together some of the best new techno artists. At the deep, dubby end of the spectrum sits Mary Velo, whose "Wavelength" is based on a sub-aquatic bassline, fathomic chords and jagged, rasping percussive bursts cutting in and out, and Delko's "Shire" a clubbier take on the chord-heavy dub sound. Bas Mooy's "Desolaat" gets the remix treatment from Xhin, whose lithe rhythms and pitter-patter beats lend the Dutch producer's filters a lighter feeling, while Dax J, Lodbrok and Antonio de Angelis each deliver robotic, repetitive, stripped back techno workouts.

Flow (Rebekah remix) - (7:05) 131 BPM
Stigma - (6:40) 126 BPM
Olus - (7:04) 129 BPM
Review: It's no holds barred as usual from Gynoid as "Fluid" serves up a variety of techno from the harder end of the spectrum. "Olus" is the least abrasive, its outer space bleeps and blips flitting in and out of a stripped back, percussive groove. "Stigma" ramps up the pressure with a stepping rhythm underscoring ravey riffs and a big break down. However, Dark Chambers really take the gloves off on "Flow", a thumping, pounding groove that veers into eerie, tranced out chords. Rebekah doesn't miss the opportunity to push "Flow" into an even harsher direction, her hyperactive claps and drums on the edge of distortion providing a fitting climax.

Advanced Human - "Hungry Jack" - (5:31) 127 BPM
Kristian Heikkila - "Skalpell" - (7:16) 125 BPM
Review: The second Reprise EP brings together some of Europe's finest new techno producers. Mathias Fridell has been making waves with his post-Sandwell dubby sound and "Durnadal" is one of his finest tracks to date. Heavy, dense beats and chiming chords are underpinned by stepping beats and a subsonic pulses. Parick Gil's "Li Jet" gets remixed by Jeroen Search, who turns it into a no-nonsense jacking techno affair. Advanced Human's "Hungry Jack" is also pared back, but in this instance, the main elements are pitchbent vocals, driving percussion and a welling chord sequence. On the subject of big chords, Kristian Heikkila's "Skalpell" is a churning, chord big room affair.

Looper (Conrad Van Orton dub - digital bonus track) - (8:09) 128 BPM
Review: Gynoid goes for a dubbier albeit peak-time sound with "Looper" by PVS. The beats are heavy and the rhythm driving, while the merciless whiplash percussion drives the arrangement along effectively, making it more functional than gray scale industrial techno. Gynoid is clearly going for the peak time here and its remixes focus on harder edged sounds. Conrad Van Orton's first remix is based on pounding, industrial drums and slabs of iron metal riffs. On the dub version, he opts for a deeper, more panning approach, but the firing percussion and oversized kicks ensure that it remains on the agenda for peak time DJs.

Procurators (original mix) - (6:20) 128 BPM Hot
Procurators (Samuli Kemppi remix) - (6:08) 128 BPM
Review: Fridell is one of the more interesting producers to emerge in the wake of Sandwell District, as his sound has an earthier, more sensual quality than the legion of industrial producers. On "Procurators", he proves his worth with a throbbing groove that is supported by a series of dark riffs and resonating bleeps. But Fridell still has some way to go before he can emulate a producer like Samuli Kemppi, who provides a remix of "Procurators". The drums slam even though the rhythm is reduced and tighter, while the Finnish artist turns Fridell's bleeps into the kind of outer space yelps and squelches that would make Juan Atkins proud.

Review: Gynoid reveals a murkier side with the Reprise series. Ground Loop's "Begin" sounds like a relatively normal techno groove until ravey riffs kick in over the massive claps. Likewise on Mattias Fridell's take on Jin Hiyama's "Carp", percussive elements take hold. Hats crackle and hiss, snares roll in menacingly and an electronic bassline hums menacingly. The Advanced Human remix of Dacido and Meta's "Knockin On A Dark Room" up the ante further with dramatic chord sweeps and a pulsing acid line creating the drama, while Velovr's "We Are Straight" brings the release to a crushing close, its heavy beats and murky, stepping rhythm stomping all over the listener.

Imaginary Temporal Axis EP
Temporal Axis - (6:37) 128 BPM Hot
Restrictive Influence - (6:25) 128 BPM
Durandal - (6:32) 128 BPM
Review: This German producer has been steadily making waves with a series of underground releases - but this new EP sees him excel. "Temporal Axis" is a thrilling serving of Berghain-primed techno, its tough dubby beats, sprays of metallic percussion and moody riffs made to order for the Berlin club. "Durandal" is in a similar vein but with less of the urgency as tranced out chords are combined with a chugging groove. "Restrictive Influence" is Fridell's finest moment to date though, with concrete-weight beats solder-ironed to slamming, insistent percussion and a niggling acid undercurrent. Despite its heavy sound, it has all the grace and swagger of a heavyweight champion boxer.

Master Mind (Rebekah remix) - (6:01) 130 BPM Hot
Review: Mary Velo's output has thus far focused on the more austere end of contemporary techno, so this release marks a departure for the Berlin-based artist. "Master Mind" is positively euphoric, with a swinging groove and fat off-beats providing the basis for eerie, swirling chord sweeps and even some upbeat cowbells. It sounds like Velo has discovered a previously untapped happy side to her musical character, but there is no such mood on Rebekah's remix. Like Velo's previous releases for Gynoid, the rhythm is driving, the percussion bursts as sharp as a diamond glass-cutter and the chord stabs nothing short of dramatic.

Review: DJ Hi-Shock compiles the second instalment of his remixes and in so doing shows just how many killer reshapes he has carried out recently. Most of the interpretations follow a roughly similar path, with heavy, dubby beats combined with fathomic chords and rickety percussion. There are of course some smart diversions; his take on Mark Broom's "M28" deploys a stepping rhythm and infectious filtering; the remix he provides of Ad.lib & Silvision's 'Collide' sees acidic lines roll in menacingly over metallic rhythms and the take on MADA and Plankton's "Zath" is an eerie, stripped back groove fuelled by a throbbing bass.

Review: Dutch producer Bas Mooy is one of the most talented hard techno producers, but for some reason, he doesn't get the acclaim that he deserves. Hopefully this release will help to address that situation. "Desolaat" is a killer track, its pumping groove underpinned by a dark acid line and dramatic filter sweeps. "Recoil" showcases Mooy's ability to work with seemingly disparate elements, as dreamy sound scapes unfold over a muddy bass and slamming, tribal beats. The remixers are also of a high standard. Xhin strips "Desolaat" back and turns it into leaner rhythmic workout, while the Radial take on "Recoil" is more slamming than the original, its heavy drums building to a bombastic climax.

Review: New school producer Delko gives the old guard a lesson in how to deliver forceful techno. The title track is bone-crushingly intense as heavy beats underpin layers of bleepy tones, but it doesn't hold a candle to "Useless". A jack-hammer rhythm provides the basis for doubled up claps, epic break downs and discordant waves of twisted metal riffs rollling in like thunder. "Shire" sees Delko unveil his sensitive side (in as much as an artist like him can be understated), wih a shimmering chord sequence providing the backdrop for a plaintive vocal narative. The predatory bassline and heavy acid of "Tape" complete this exemplary package.

Patrick Krieger turns in a version of "Cielo" that tightens up the dub and leaves things lean yet powerful with some hefty compressed kicks, and Mattias Fridell creates his take on "Vuelo" that contains strong Detroit undertones in its woody kick and pulsating bass throb.

Review: Developer continues his fine run of form with this EP for Gynoid Audio with four tracks of typically driving yet intelligent techno. "Tiburon" opens on a decidedly mechanistic tip, as factory line rhythms drive forward gaseous textures, while "Shade" is decidedly chunkier affair, with shackling hi-hats playing off against deep organ drones. "Bodega" fills its rhythmic gaps with shrill bleeps and electro-acoustic tones, but it's "Formu" that's the real powerhouse of the release, as pounding kicks go head to head with undulating sheet metal chords.

Pertaining To The Vintage - (6:45) 127 BPM
Review: The closure last year of the Sandwell District has left a gaping void in the droning techno sound - can upcoming artist Mattias Fridell help to plug it with the unwieldy sounding Paradigm Contamination EP? Certainly on "Rhine Maiden", it sounds like the spirit of Function and Regis is present. Over an eerie but forceful bass, Fridell drops a tapestry of bleeps and tonal sounds that is reminiscent of Sandwell at its most menacing. "Klein Point" is heavier and perhaps less immediate as broken beats and a slamming, fractured rhythm supports hissing percussive licks and a chugging filter. But he moves back to esoteric club techno on "Pertaining To The Vintage", where a pulsing bass sweeps along underpinning whooshing atmospheric textures.

Review: Prolific Australian imprint Gynoid Audio lands its 72nd digital release via 88UW's No Rush ep, Sebastian Stohr's fourth for the label and second for Gynoid this year. It's easy to imagine Stohr producing "Incorrigible" with a flickered Aphex Twin styled grin - a look that says 'let's mess with their heads'. What else could be the reason for a sonically dismembered tambourine - the tracks focal point - continually descends downward into a confused tapestry of sinister bubbles and Sandwell District bleeps, beclouded further by fluttered panning, dank gurgles and tremolo techniques. "No Rush" is straight up techno - the type you pull out to explain what German techno is. Paul Boex, one half of Abstract Division and label head to Dynamic Reflection offers his "Hypno Rework" to "No Rush", shaving off some of the originals low end and replacing it with sprinklings of melodica-hypnotica. The back-beat kick-snare combo and subtle synths of "Virus" round out the EP and is a perfect pressure cooker for the esoteric warm up DJ.

Played by: Mattias Fridell
Review: This London-based Italian producer has just a handful of releases to his credit, but has already developed an ability to creatively fuse existing sounds and styles. The title track is a good example: rich, warm chords surge and flow over a stripped back, razor-sharp minimal rhythm, equal parts inspired by Rob Hood and Basic Channel. On "Armadura", de Angelis teases out dubby techno over scuffled, juddering beats that are coated in spine-tingling acid lines. Gynoid has also chosen the remixers wisely: Advanced Human lends his breezeblock beats and metallic percussion to his version of the title track, while Mattias Fridell pushes "Armadura" into a tunnelling groove.

Toby Fairbank - "Aporia" - (7:50) 127 BPM
Patrick Gil - "Maui" - (6:37) 128 BPM
Stingrays - "The Mourning Soulz" - (6:56) 130 BPM
Lodbrok - "Atlete Vix" - (7:08) 126 BPM Hot
Review: This offshoot of the popular techno label shows why it is as credible as its parent. Toby Fairbank's "Aporia" sets the scene and tone for the release with a rolling groove and gained, distorted beats supporting slivers of percussion that sound like glass shattering. Patrick Gill's "Maui" takes a moodier, more understated approach with a reverberating rhythm that echoes and pulses in a tantalising fashion. But it's only a brief interlude from the prevailing tone and Stingray's "The Morning Soulz" rolls and lunges in an abrasive manner, while the highlight of Series 3 are the sheets of metallic percussion raining down on a booming big room groove on Lodbrok's "Atlete Vix".

M28 (Truncate remix) - (5:18) 128 BPM
M28 (Advanced Human Dub) - (6:33) 127 BPM
Review: When UK producer Mark Broom went down the party route for his last album, there was undoubtedly a cohort of his fans who were displeased. After all, Broom has a long and proud tradition of putting out defiantly underground techno. Box Set could well be his peace offering to the purists; its deep chords build and build over a rolling Pure Plastic groove, to the point where the dub nuances come close to hitting the red dial. "M28" is fashioned by similar influences, but its backing track is more sedate, with Broom constructing clicking, hissing rhythms, while Advanced Human's take explores a dubby sound and Truncate provides a fine militaristic take, its pulsing groove bolstered by percussive licks and tight claps.

I Am Still (Damien Schneider remix) - (8:44) 128 BPM
Review: Fresh-faced UK techno producer Chris Page has only been releasing music for the past year, but already his sound is taking in a healthy range of styles. It's a crisp, digital sound he has striven for on the I Am Still EP, but with an electronica sophistication at times; most notably in the robotic synth work you find on "Negative". Elsewhere there's more straight-up bleak techno fare to be found, shot through with a careful kind of restraint. Bristol producer Damien Schneider jacks "I Am Still" up nicely with some nasty hats and a mean kick drum, adding a tougher edge to the original.

Pine Gap EP
Pine Gap (original mix) - (6:19) 124 BPM Hot

South Signal (original mix) - (6:22) 125 BPM
South Signal (Mattias Fridell remix) - (7:00) 127 BPM
Review: Like SP-X and Developer, Ground Loop provides a contemporary take on club techno. "Pine Gap" shows how techno has progressed in the area of sound design as concrete beats provide the basis for a growling bass and churning filters but also eerie textures. "South Signal" is a different proposition as Ground Loop escapes the rigours of the peak time to focus on stop-start beats and a low slung rhythm. Despite this, there is no doubt about where this EP's focus is; Advanced Human's take on the title track feature abrasive percussion and a big room filter, while Mattias Fridell's take on "South Signal" is more understated, but its tight claps and linear rhythm mean that it is a consummate functional techno track.
