Review: Behind the doors at Hemlock Recordings, there is always a new concoction of magic being brewed, with the abstract sounds of Laughing Ears taking command of this latest three track display. To begin, 'Losing Track' gives us a thought provoking introduction, driving us down an unusual rhythmic path, with syncopated tom rolls and cricket-like chirps adding more mystery as we go. We move into a more 140-type realm next as 'Bite The Bullet' combines glitchy synth swivels with booming kicks for a mind-melting journey into sonic creativity. Finally, 'Breakaway' continues with the unusual rhythmic approach, linking together sweeping LFO sweepings with off-beat drum rhythms and eerie melodic twists, putting the finishing touches down nicely.

Review: The Hemlock Recordings imprint is one notorious with supplying scattered, interesting creations, a theme which the label gladly continues here with Beneath's latest EP entitled 'On Tilt'. It's a truly exciting exploration into the more scattered side of underground dance music, kicking off with the dystopian melodic structures of 'A Shrill Manner' and the haunted harmonic designs of 'Bone Hum', which uses a fabulous combination of eerie patterns and spatial awareness throughout. The rolling drum punches and cartoon-esc melodies of 'Shambling' then follow before the dubstep influenced arrangement and swampy atmospherics of 'Dark Waters' take the project in a completely different direction, before the more subtle hardcore influences of 'The Passage' direct us right back to the party tree. Finally, 'Lesser Circulation' gives us an unusual finale, combining super-electronic synth buzzes with quirky melodies and unpredictable rhythms to leave the listener in somewhat of a trance. Lovely stuff!

Review: am Smith aka Ploy is making some of the hottest techno around at the moment and, no, the dude ain't German. Bristol-schooled and full of bass dread, Ploy's tunes have taken him from Timedance to Hessle Audio, and now onto the ever-impressive Hemlock Recordings. "Unruly" dominates the A-side with its fat, inter-galactic groove filled to the brim with hollow noise and complex percussion folds, all blowing up to a stop-start rhythm; on the flipside "Garys" chucks out another dense groove of tooled-up techno wizardry, banging and dubbed-out for maximum club tear-out, whereas "Lost Hours" lingers in outer space thanks to a beatless sway made up of kinetic bleeps and aqueous sonic shapes. Killer!

Review: James Blake collaborator Rob 'Airhead' McAndrews delivers his first EP for Hemlock in three years, but it has been worth the wait. On "Antipolo", he combines the experimental approach that was audible on his recent release for PS Records, with grey textures and white noise interference underpinned by a dense, shuffling rhythm and dark drums. The track breaks down sporadically to reveal outer space blips and sound effects, but its real strength lies in its loose groove. The title track also features background noise and found sounds, but soon enough raw drums and chattering percussion lead "Shaded" into a rave-fuelled climax. As is always the case with Airhead, Shaded is inventive and unusual.

Review: Following his release for Peder Mannerfelt's label, Hodge presents a different approach on Hemlock. Last seen on the label back in 2015, this three-track release puts a focus squarely on techno. The title track is built on robust, steely drums, subtle filters and some background effects. In contrast, "Anomame" is an atmospheric affair that rides melancholic melody sequences and a lithe Detroit rhythm, while on "Medway", the Bristol producer offers a third variant. Slower and more experimental sounding - thanks to percussion that sounds like a shack door banging in a storm - its creeping acid and eerie synths ride a minimal, stepping rhythm. It proves again why the UK producer is so respected.

Review: Hemlock founder Untold is back on the label with his first release since "Doff" on sub-label HBLK back in 2015. This release follows appearances on last year's #savefabric compilation, and more recently on Magic City III compiled by Mixpak boss Jubilee. HEK029 follows a rewarding period of A&R for Hemlock, that has so far delivered EPs from locals Bruce and Parris, with several more scheduled to drop throughout 2017. This EP's two winding tracks are a natural progression from the fiercely textural drum work of Untold's previous singles and the album Black Light Spiral. Here the material is given more space to breathe and released from the grid, creating a lighter more footloose feel. "Tear Up the Club" carries the weight of DMZ era half-step, using a loose web of elasticated breaks and builds to reveal a striking melodic line. On "Watton Res" exotic tones are further compressed and expanded in sequence, encasing drum machine, keyboards and guitar work within a delicate shell.

Review: After an uncompromising set of EPs for the justifiably hyped Ancient Monarchy label, which helped to take the imprint out of the deep underground and into the mainstream, Soundman Chronicles' DJ Parris lands on London's mighty Hemlock to deliver yet more of his impressionistic take on house and techno. What we love about this guy is that we never know what we're gonna get from him, and these three tunes are a perfect example of that: "Your Kiss Is Sour" is made up of rotating synth echoes that flutter in and out of heavy bass pulses whereas, on the flip, "Flowering In Threes" adds a little house sensitivity to a similarly aqueous range of atmospherics, while "My Beautiful Fantasy" offers the oddball of the lot, or rather, the one tune that will surely get the heads nodding their head up and down thanks to that dub-leaning bass riding in its underbelly. Yes, Parris. And yes to Ancient Monarchy for stepping into the digital zone.

Review: With his profile bounding into the premier league thanks to salvos on Livity Sound, Hotline, Tempa and Berceuse Heorique, Hodge cements his reputation with a double pack on Hemlock that justifies every ounce of praise. Across the four tracks his rough and tumble approach to bass-infused techno dynamics holds court with confidence, as "Blood Moon" throws down dramatic grime strings over clattering drums and "I Don't Recognise You Lately" turns out a melancholic chime pattern embellished with tightly coiled slithers of percussion. "Recall" edges towards nervy blips and gargantuan claps, while "Tail Of The Snake" summons up tribal incantations in an uneasy UK twist on minimal techno.

Review: With a renewed sense of vigour following his releases on 1800-Dinosaur and R&S, Airhead is back in action and this time its for Untold's Hemlock imprint. The tracks fit the label's bill well, with "October" in particular working a rowdy set of drums with a loose and live flavour, some tasty dub fills in the breakdown, and a slightly unhinged range of synth and sample action to fill in the gaps. "Macondo" finds itself in the kind of fractious house rivet that suits Floating Points constructions, although the tone is more abstract and edgy as broken computer squawks and stabs of intent shape out an ear-snagging party starter of the most unconventional kind.

Review: To celebrate four years of releases, Hemlock, the label run by Untold and Jack Dunning presents Chapter One, a collection of label highlights and unreleased exclusives. Moving through the glittery funk-leaning post-dubstep of Fantastic Mr Fox, Mount Kimbie and James Blake, through techno contributions from Sei A, Randomer and Guy Andrews, and bass hybrids from Pangaea and Joe, the selections on offer demonstrate why Hemlock has been ahead of the game since its inception. As well as the individual tracks, a continuous mix is also on offer, joining the dots between their diverse releases with style.
