Review: DJ and self-proclaimed 'freestyle dancer' Baronhawk Poitier is the latest artist to sign to San Fran imprint Honey Soundsystem. This three-tracker shows that his approach to production is just as eclectic as his own dance floor moves. "Phakie Phatty" revolves around a stepping rhythm that provides the backdrop for acid squelches and dubbed out chords. On "Lowside Heights", the mood is more tripped out as Poitier lets loose with a gurgling 303 line and low-slung rhythm. Shifting approach once again, "Gasp & Grasp" is redolent of late 90s UK deep house, resounding to broken drums and gloriously spaced out horn stabs.

Review: UK-based techno producer Jules Smith aka October is not the most obvious name that one would associate with Honey Soundsystem, but their stars align for this release. The connection is made possible in part by October's subtle integration of disco influences into his analogue sound. It's audible in the background on the frazzled, rave stabs of "Eviction 909", while "Larry Bruce Chest Thumper" sees Smith veer into a dubbed out, post-punk space. On "Hunger", he drops the tempo to deliver a low-slung, throbbing industrial rhythm, while the aptly named "Facemelter" is sure to appeal to fans of the US label's more electronic catalogue.

Review: Argentina power duo DJs Pareja up the ante with this new thriller for the ever reliable Honey Soundsystem, first showing up on label co-head Jackie House's radar a couple of years ago after he remixed their track "Club De La Locura" on Comeme. They repay the favour with four sturdy stompers on The After EP: from the tripped-out percolator jack of "I Think I Love You" calling to mind Green Velvet's work in the late '90s, to the punchy peak time Detroit vibe of "Mistic", then venturing down into the vortex on the tunnelling and hypnotic techno of "Filtro" and ending with the kickin' NYC house banger that is the title track - calling to mind classic Armand Van Helden.

Review: Julian Smith aka October emerges from the shadows for his first release of the year. The choice of label is an unexpected one, but it makes sense, with Honey putting out Eps by left of centre artists like Octo Octa and Vin Sol in recent years. Certainly, Pay Day follows an unpredictable path. "Tuesday" is a low-slung, reverb-heavy workout, punctuated by snappy drums and spaced out effects - like Chicken Lips on steroids. On the title track, Smith changes tact to deliver an abrasive, visceral stomper, led by wild bleeps and noisy, crashing drums. "Urgency" sees him flirt with the kind of menacing ebm sound that prevailed on his Black Body Radiation album, while he closes out this remarkable EP with the swampy abstractions of "Rent".

Review: Vin Sol's relationship with Honey Soundsystem goes back a long way, which is why the San Fran label has said that they subjected him to a more rigorous A&R process than other artist on their label. According to Honey Soundsystem, they wanted to ensure that the 'marriage was right' when it came to releasing material. Certainly, this four-track is proof that their pernickety attitude paid off. The title track is a deep, hypnotic techno track, while "Electrical Storms" sees him delve into darker territories thanks to its eerie chords. On the linear "Patronize", he introduces eerie bleeps and rasping percussion, while the suggestively named "Bondage Taped" closes the release with a grimy, jacking groove.
