Temperado Tornado EP
Temperado Tornado - (4:59) 134 BPM Hot
Phakie Phatty - (5:24) 127 BPM
Review: DJ and self-proclaimed 'freestyle dancer' Baronhawk Poitier is the latest artist to sign to San Fran imprint Honey Soundsystem. This three-tracker shows that his approach to production is just as eclectic as his own dance floor moves. "Phakie Phatty" revolves around a stepping rhythm that provides the backdrop for acid squelches and dubbed out chords. On "Lowside Heights", the mood is more tripped out as Poitier lets loose with a gurgling 303 line and low-slung rhythm. Shifting approach once again, "Gasp & Grasp" is redolent of late 90s UK deep house, resounding to broken drums and gloriously spaced out horn stabs.

Eviction EP
Eviction 909 - (3:50) 130 BPM
Larry Bruce Chest Thumper - (5:50) 135 BPM
Review: UK-based techno producer Jules Smith aka October is not the most obvious name that one would associate with Honey Soundsystem, but their stars align for this release. The connection is made possible in part by October's subtle integration of disco influences into his analogue sound. It's audible in the background on the frazzled, rave stabs of "Eviction 909", while "Larry Bruce Chest Thumper" sees Smith veer into a dubbed out, post-punk space. On "Hunger", he drops the tempo to deliver a low-slung, throbbing industrial rhythm, while the aptly named "Facemelter" is sure to appeal to fans of the US label's more electronic catalogue.

The After EP
I Think I Love You - (6:04) 123 BPM
Mistic - (5:38) 122 BPM
Played by: Midland
Review: Argentina power duo DJs Pareja up the ante with this new thriller for the ever reliable Honey Soundsystem, first showing up on label co-head Jackie House's radar a couple of years ago after he remixed their track "Club De La Locura" on Comeme. They repay the favour with four sturdy stompers on The After EP: from the tripped-out percolator jack of "I Think I Love You" calling to mind Green Velvet's work in the late '90s, to the punchy peak time Detroit vibe of "Mistic", then venturing down into the vortex on the tunnelling and hypnotic techno of "Filtro" and ending with the kickin' NYC house banger that is the title track - calling to mind classic Armand Van Helden.

Take 8
Take 8 - (6:34) 124 BPM Hot
Take 8 (Kevin Devine Interpretation) - (4:15) 144 BPM
Take 8 (Taraval & Jackie House remix) - (6:58) 124 BPM
Review: Longlost might be a new name, but the producers behind it have plenty of history. The project is a collaborative affair and sees DFA Records stalwart Juan MacLean join forces with Kevin McHugh, a producer best known for his work as Ambivalent and La-4a. "Take 8" is tender, seductive and emotion-rich, with the pair wrapping echoing, ultra-deep riffs and cute melodic flourishes around a locked-in bassline and shuffling, soft-touch deep house drums. IOt sounds like the sort of thing that could be best enjoyed while watching the sun come up on a clear summer's day. Kevin Devine delivers a stunning interpretation that's little more than echoing piano motifs (very Nils Frahm if that's your thing), while Taraval and Jackie House turns it into a dense chunk of muscular house heaviness.

Pay Day EP
Tuesday - (4:42) 119 BPM Hot
Pay Day - (7:29) 127 BPM
Review: Julian Smith aka October emerges from the shadows for his first release of the year. The choice of label is an unexpected one, but it makes sense, with Honey putting out Eps by left of centre artists like Octo Octa and Vin Sol in recent years. Certainly, Pay Day follows an unpredictable path. "Tuesday" is a low-slung, reverb-heavy workout, punctuated by snappy drums and spaced out effects - like Chicken Lips on steroids. On the title track, Smith changes tact to deliver an abrasive, visceral stomper, led by wild bleeps and noisy, crashing drums. "Urgency" sees him flirt with the kind of menacing ebm sound that prevailed on his Black Body Radiation album, while he closes out this remarkable EP with the swampy abstractions of "Rent".

Tour Diaries EP
Sepehr - "I Just" (original mix) - (5:40) 127 BPM Hot
Bergqvist - "Trippin'" (original mix) - (6:32) 125 BPM
Played by: PBR Streetgang
Review: To kick-start their 2018 release programme, the Honey Soundsystem-helmed HNYTRX label serves up a four-way celebration of sweaty dancefloor madness. Sepehr kicks things off with the muscular, fuzzy and thrillingly bass-heavy deep house bump of "I Just", while Bergqvist reaches for the jazzy keys, off-kilter machine beats and restless disco beats on the quirkier but no less throbbing "Trippin". The celebrated San Francisco crew's love of freestyle and Italo-disco is indulged via the sparkling synth lines, bustling electro beats and rising acid motifs of Morven Son's standout "Looking Back", before Lunate closes proceedings with a sublime slice of dreamy, head-in-the-clouds deep house bliss entitled "Loom". With its incessant, acid-fuelled bassline and bongo-riffic rhythmic swing, it may be the highlight of a very fine EP.

Adrift
Adrift - (8:47) 120 BPM
Adrift (Dorisburg remix) - (7:03) 127 BPM
Adrift (Avalon Emerson's Furiously Awake version) - (7:20) 119 BPM Hot
Played by: ORKA
Review: Maya Bouldry-Morrison's first joined the Honey Soundsystem crew earlier this year via fine full-length Where Are We Going? Here, one of the standout cuts from that set is given a deserved single release. The producer's original version, a rolling, deep space chunk of hypnotic deep house laden with echoing analogue synth lines and drowsy, intergalactic electronics, naturally kicks things off before Dorisburg and Avalon Emerson deliver their own interpretations. The former opts for a darker, early-morning-in-Berlin style take - think bold analogue bass, intricately programmed beats and foreboding aural textures - while the latter gives the cut a more "live" feel via layered new drum hits and oodles of outboard hardware effects.

Moonchild EP
Moonchild - (5:59) 126 BPM
Electrical Storms - (5:52) 127 BPM
Review: Vin Sol's relationship with Honey Soundsystem goes back a long way, which is why the San Fran label has said that they subjected him to a more rigorous A&R process than other artist on their label. According to Honey Soundsystem, they wanted to ensure that the 'marriage was right' when it came to releasing material. Certainly, this four-track is proof that their pernickety attitude paid off. The title track is a deep, hypnotic techno track, while "Electrical Storms" sees him delve into darker territories thanks to its eerie chords. On the linear "Patronize", he introduces eerie bleeps and rasping percussion, while the suggestively named "Bondage Taped" closes the release with a grimy, jacking groove.

Where Are We Going?
Where Are We Going? Pt 1 - (7:31) 120 BPM
On Your Lips - (6:09) 120 BPM
Review: Having spent the last few years delivering pleasingly melodious, far-sighted singles on Argot, Skylax, Deepblak and Running Back, Maya Bouldry-Morrison has joined the Honey Soundsystem family. Where Are We Going Is the Brooklyn-based artist's first album since 2013, when she was regarded as one of 100% Silk's most talented producers. As full-length adventures go, it's undeniably enjoyable, with Bouldry-Morrison delivering warm, retro-futurist cuts that cannily combine elements of vintage Chicago deep house and Italian dream house tropes with the breakbeat-driven shuffle of rave-era British dance records and occasional Motor City style flourishes. While there's naturally plenty of club-ready material throughout, it's also the sort of album that you can comfortably listen to in the comfort of your own home.
