Review: Leeds' own disco don Andy Buchan returns to Hot Gorilla with an EP consisting of what are, essentially, three nu disco-fied cover versions - specifically, his takes on 'Don't You (Forget About Me)' by Simple Minds, 'Get Lucky' by Daft Punk and 'Burning Down The House' by Talking Heads. But there's a twist - as the EP title suggests, each of those covers has been augmented by the employment of a full choir on vocal duties. It's an approach that may prove a bit 'Marmite' (for this writer, the treatment works best on 'Get Lucky') but it certainly makes a change from endless re-edits...

Review: We have no idea who Paul DaSoul is, and Hot Gorilla is dropping this two-tracker (seemingly his debut) with no fanfare, fuss or information of any sort. What we can tell you, though, is that it's an extremely strong first outing, funkier than yoghurt that's been left out of the sun for six days, and thoroughly dancefloor ready. Check first 'Give Me', a driving, thickset and deliciously Clavinet-heavy workout that seemingly beefs up, rearranges and expands on a P-funk era dancefloor gem (complete with eyes-closed lead vocals, heady horns and rubbery bass), before admiring the subtly tooled-up, house set-friendly electrofunk workout that is 'Slow Push It Baby'. To borrow an old DJ cliche, this really is "all killer, no filler".

Review: Hot Gorilla Records, self-styled purveyors of "disco for funky monkeys", has enjoyed a very successful 2023 - as this timely round-up of the imprint's finest moments of the year emphatically proves. Check first the summery, party-starting disco-goes-house joy of Dexter Jones' 'Space Sister', before admiring the horn-heavy, edit-not-edit excellence of Andy Buchan's 'Shake What You Got' and the Brenda Taylor-sampling boogie-meets-nu-disco fusion of 'Lovers Boogie' by Solazz. Highlights elsewhere across the compilation include the 21st century disco-funk of Harlem Dance Club's 'Shake a Hand', the eyes-closed peak-time rush of Fray Bentos' 'No Lies', and the rolling, effects-laden hedonism of 'Feels So Good' by Pete Whitely.

Review: Dutch producer Ruud Ruijter, AKA Harlem Dance Club, returns to Hot Gorilla with a brand new jam that's served up in your choice of three dancefloor mixes, plus a Radio Edit. In its Original form, 'Take My Hand' has something of an early 80s feel and is powered along by a walking funk b-line and guitar chops, married to heavily treated vox and the occasional brass fanfare. The remix from UK stalwart Andy Buchan ups the tempo a notch and takes us into housier pastures, while Stewart Birch heads in the opposite direction and serves up a smoother, boogie-oriented pass that just nudges it for this writer.

Review: London-based French duo OR have numerous releases under their belts for the likes of Hot Gorilla, Rare Wiri, Kraak, ChessBoard Music and Manuel Costela's 2phonic Recordings. Here they team up for a third time with Houston-based vocalist Z'Maji on a track that, in its original form, is a midtempo, soul-leaning affair with grown-up pop appeal. Andy Buchan's remix is probably the better bet for dancefloor play, though, as the Leeds stalwart puts the jazz in nu-disco, while the EP's completed by a 2023 edit of 'You Are Mine', a sumptuous lil' groover that first dropped last year and features a lush female vocal from Pakistan's Zoha Zuberi

Review: If it's high-steppin' disco with da funk in full effect you're after, this two-tracker from Bulgaria's Groovemasta should be right up your alley. 'Get Your Love' itself is a reworking of The Strikers' 'Inch By Inch' from 1981, which leads us to suspect that 'Peanut Boogie' is also a re-edit - but if so we couldn't tell you what of. And no, it's neither 'Peanut Butter' by Gwen Guthrie, nor the Twennynine/Lenny White cut of the same name. Regardless of origin, though, it's a rawer funk jam than the title track and as such provides a pleasing contrast - but rest assured, either track will get 'em moving for sure.

Review: Irish producer Dexter Jones' production CV reads like a Who's Who of modern disco labels, with outings on Midnight Riot, Rare Wiri, Hot Digits and Discoholics Anonymous, among others. Now, he puts another notch in that impressive bedpost thanks to this nifty little two-tracker for Hot Gorilla. 'Space Sister' is up first, a sprightly, fluttery disco roller with insistent piano chords and a chorus'd female "one more time" vocal that loops pretty much throughout - hold back till peaktime for maximum euphoric effect. The accompanying 'Gorilla Groove', by way of contrast, drops down into a dirtier, funkier groove but is just as irresistible.
