Expectations - (6:13) 125 BPM Hot
Voices - (6:22) 124 BPM
Burn Out - (5:47) 124 BPM
Review: A marked difference from his most recent Scuba originals, 'Expectations' signals a contrasting path for sonic exploration by the Hotflush chief - covering house, garage and rave sounds. He references classic Stateside house of the early '90s on the title track to stunning effect, before heading down an introspective route on the evocative acid epic "Voices" (including Rose's own vocals) and going deeper on the glassy-eyed and melancholic vibe of "Burn Out" - calling to mind his earlier output several years ago under the SCB alias. It also features recordings of live acoustic riffs by the artist. Cover art by Lando (Decadence Comics).

Review: Acclaimed Italian duo Mind Against return with a four-track EP of spiralling, hypnotic techno on acclaimed label Hotflush - for the second time since "Elysium" / "Pulsar" (with Locked Groove) in 2015. From the tunnelling adrenaline rush of the title track which is sure work the floor under the strobelight, there's also the brooding heads-down factory floor stomp of "Forevermore" and a bit of material more familiar of the duo on the epic dance floor drama of "Mirage" - complete with its wonky bass line, intoxicating melodies and euphoric pad layers all geared for some moments of pure zen in the main room.

Review: Tim Van de Meutter aka Locked Groove's debut album is a product of its surroundings. A Belgian native, the Hotflush artist draws on his home country's rich electronic music heritage to create a unique soundtrack. Rave is represented by the uplifting break beats and time-stretched vocals of Nate Brown on "Pudding", on "Out of Orbit", he draws on the tripped out, hypnotic sound of New Beat and "Oscillate" is a sublime slice of Belgian trance. On other occasions, Van de Meutter takes inspiration from classic house - witness the Lil' Louis-style "Do Not Freak" - or deep techno jams such as "From Beyond", but in the main, this is truly a Belgian affair.

Wally's Groove World - (7:04) 128 BPM
Review: Following an acclaimed EP series that saw Locked Groove exploring Belgium's musical heritage such as EBM, new beat, trance, rave and techno (all through a contemporary lens), this edition marks the final step towards his debut album Sunset Service - on Scuba's Hotflush label. It is said to be an amalgamation of a diverse and carefully studied musical history, so keep your eyes peeled. Features the euphoric cut "Out Of Orbit" with its classic rave motifs and "Wally's Groove World" - a tribute to the beloved Antwerp record store which explores sounds of the '90s Belgian underground.

Silk
Pour - (6:08) 126 BPM
Channel - (6:08) 126 BPM Hot
Silk - (5:56) 125 BPM
Review: Three fine tracks here from Recondite that will delight those in search of some atmospheric yet muscular techno grooves. 'Silk' itself opens with hard-hitting 4/4s, but before too long it's the dubwise bassline that's taking centre stage, as the track develops into a dubbed-out, heads-down number aimed at 3am dancefloors. 'Channel' is even harder-hitting, indeed almost industrial-sounding, in the kick drum department but is otherwise quite a sparse, otherworldly affair that comes locked and loaded with ominous synths and atmospheric FX galore, before the more sprightly and funk-fuelled 'Pour' rounds out an excellent package from Hotflush.

Do Not Freak
Do Not Freak - (5:35) 128 BPM Hot
Attack - (5:32) 130 BPM
Review: Preceding the release of his highly anticipated debut album, Locked Groove presents Do Not Freak: a two-track EP applying his own interpretations to the classic sounds of the Belgian underground that continue to influence his sound - namely new beat and rave. These tracks come in advance of his new album Sunset Service. Written over a one year period with a combination of analogue and digital equipment at his Berlin studio, it documents the synthesis of a carefully studied musical background into one coherent body of work. With its elevating piano progressions and glistening organ arpeggios over strict machine rhythms - you would think it is the second summer of love all over again on the title track. Fast forward a few years later, he delves into the darker effects of ecstasy on the UK hardcore influence with its fierce breaks and rolling bass on "Attack".

Wanderlust
Wanderlust - (5:37) 124 BPM Hot
Chimes - (5:21) 119 BPM
Review: Fresh off some terrific remixes of label boss Scuba's Caibu LP, Hotflush presents some emotive tech-house from some London based multi-instrumentalists: the classically trained Lawrence Hart (aka Duncan Tootill) and Algebra Records boss Casually Here. The incredibly evocative "Wanderlust" carries similarities to Hart's work with long time collaborator George Fitzgerald with its rich tapestry of sparkly synth textures and skippy drums. "Chimes" on the other hand is a bit tougher and has more bounce to it - its title refers to its hypnotic and resonating melody between interludes of sublime and heady ambience.

RHU (Justin Cudmore remix) - (7:34) 124 BPM Hot
Review: TML aka Peter Lansky hails from Minneapolis, and his debut outing on Hotflush offers an amalgamation of sounds from the past 30 years of electronic music. "Cell ID" is a raw, stepping workout that resounds to spine-tingling acid lines and crisp claps. "B2B" sees the US producer opt for mournful synth lines, albeit aligned to percussive volleys, while on "Human", he goes deeper still, as emotive pads and a breathy vocal unravel over a raw drum track. The label has also tapped Justin Cudmore to rework "RHU", with the revered producer dropping a bleep-heavy stepper that will appeal to fans of Tin Man's music.

Opposition Division - (5:35) 127 BPM
Confidence Trick - (8:06) 125 BPM
The Cut - (4:25) 127 BPM
Review: Paul Rose started the SCB side project as a platform to put out dance floor-focused techno - and he has resurrected it for Below the Line. The release supposedly refers to a hypothetical scenario where a climate-related disaster triggers widespread unrest. Despite bearing such a potentially tragic back story, there is much material for celebration here; "Five Degrees" revolves around an acid bass, while "Confidence Track" sees Rose revisit previous SCB material, with looped chords and cavernous filters riding a rolling groove. The release does feature an ominous composition in the form of the moody electro cut, "Opposition Division", but the main focus is on the dance floor, as the massive breakdown and siren riffs of "The Cut" demonstrates.

Review: In the last several years, German producer Lorenz Brunner has established himself as one of the most defining voices in techno with his singular sound. You just know a Recondite track when you hear one: dark/epic and melodic journeys that have brought ultimate euphoria to many of the world's biggest dancefloors and courtesy of a who's who of labels. From Innervisions and Life & Death through to Dystopian, to name but a few. Another revered institution that has championed his work of course, is Hotflush, and the brilliant Bavarian is their next label stalwart to be thrust under the spotlight as part of their Update series. The much celebrated DRGN / Wist 365 EP from 2012 appears, in addition to ?2014's Caldera and last years Phalanx EP. Plus, not one, but two remixes of label boss Scuba's "The Hope".

Outrun - (6:13) 127 BPM
Don't Look Around - (6:25) 120 BPM
Review: Next up on Scuba's esteemed Hotflush imprint is Brazilian newcomer Daniela Caldellas aka Terr with the driving and hypnotic techno journey entitled "Misantropicalia", which follows up last years awesome Burn The Past EP. The title track is awash in layers of razor sharp arpeggios; it's quite reminiscent of Croatian legend Petar Dundov in a away, and that's a compliment. On "OutRun" she throws down some griity electro-funk which is no doubt informed by a healthy love of legends such as Dopplereffekt or Drexciya, while "Don't Look Around" goes for something different again on this spacey, neon-lit electro house cruiser.

Black On Black (Len Faki Goes Black remix) - (8:23) 124 BPM Hot

Review: It seems Paul Rose can do no wrong. With a successful career that has gone from strength to strength through its many phases in the last several years he returns with another masterclass, peak time production taken from his new album Claustrophobia. "Black On Black" goes back to his trance inspired explorations of a few years ago, hypnotising you into submission with its epic synth lead while doom laden Carl Craig style synth stabs lurk in the background. Speaking of all things dark and apocalyptic, who better than getting Berghain and Figure main man Len Faki in for a remix. No surprises here; he turns in a version just as epic than the original.

Elysium
Elysium - (8:43) 125 BPM Hot
Pulsar - (8:49) 124 BPM
Review: The fortieth release on Scuba's label is a collaboration between Locked Groove and the fast-rising Italian pair Mind Against. If there was any doubt that Hotflush represents an accessible take on underground techno, then this is it delivered with a palpable self-confidence. "Elysium" is based on tribal beats, but its groove pulses insidiously and the melodic breakdown is reminiscent of Kompakt's classic trance sheen. "Pulsar" follows in a similar vein and the arrangement, erm, pulses hypnotically. Although similarly pristine hooks and sparkling synths are audible, on this occasion it's all about the groove that gets increasingly intense until the inevitable climax.

Review: Having firmly established himself as a mainstay of the Hotflush family Locked Groove is back on the label once more with some of that ultra-modern 4/4 business. Interestingly "Enigma" points in some way back to the UK bass roots of Scuba's label with its grimey horn stabs, albeit in the context of a haunting house track. "Wandering In A Cage" is a more typically slick tech house jam with a dubby lilt to the synths and a brooding atmosphere for those who find the horns on "Enigma" too much. That said, it's the lead track that gets the remix treatment, first from Scuba who weaves a more wistful arrangement around those hooky stabs, before Locked Groove's own "Dub Mix" shuffles up the samples a touch for a different rhythmic flavour.

Wandering Hands - (7:48) 123 BPM
Review: Last year saw Dense & Pika make Hotflush their home after Alex Jones and Christopher Spero's project first surfaced via a select few white label releases. Aside from a remix of the Woolford classic "Erotic Discourse", Dense & Pika have been notably quiet on the release front so this new four-track slab for Scuba's label will be most welcome. Already in possession of a warehouse-ready style of techno, the Klank EP suggests it's been further honed in their time away from the spotlight with the title cut a particularly weighty production that has a low end that growls like a dragon. From here the pair enter submerged depths on "Wandering Hands" before the B-side signals a return to more chaotic fare with "Slowhand" and "Slacker".

Ritual To Romance - (6:13) 125 BPM
Output - (6:37) 126 BPM
Review: Continuing to solidify his relationship with Hotflush after last year's Revolver 12", South London Ordnance is bringing his muscular yet supple modern techno back for a chunky four-track EP. "Contact" operates on many levels, packing a smooth and linear groove over which a beefy beat throbs out, hitting with the kind of hi-tech studio sheen that makes Trevino tracks shimmer, while slipping in some more delicate melodic details where it counts. "Sabre" takes a more minimal stance, channeling the energy of mid '00s M_nus into a slightly more industrial headspace. "Ritual Romance" creates its own kind of eerie vibe with a bulbous square wave synth line, while the beat stays light and nimble. "Output" rounds things off with a peppy but ultimately spiritual romp into yet more crafty production styles for the modern dance.
