Erotic Discourse Remixes
Erotic Discourse (Dense & Pika remix) - (7:25) 124 BPM Hot
Erotic Discourse (Kowton remix) - (5:14)
Review: If you've been to a night club over the course of the past six years, it's fairly certain that you will have heard "Erotic Discourse" at least once. Released by Paul Woolford under the Bobby Peru alias on 20:20 Vision in 2006, the track is rightly regarded as one of the highlights of the producer's storied career; featuring an effect akin to a golf ball dropping down a corrugated iron pipe, there's not really been a techno track since that's quite so weird. Now Hotflush have decided to revisit the track, delivering it into the hands of some interesting remixers. Dense & Pika's rework opts to leave the sonic weirdness wisely remains intact, whilst also bringing their weighty rhythmic leaning to the fore. Livity Sound's Kowton meanwhile delivers one of his signature revisions which pairs the rippling sonics of the original with some meaty subs, resulting in one of the strangest tracks to see light on Hotflush in some time. Make no mistake, these are two absolute killers here.

Orbit/MDMA
Orbit - (7:56) 123 BPM
MDMA - (6:08) 127 BPM Hot
Review: The legendary Paul Woolford, who also goes by the name Special Request and who has appeared on everything from Sven Vath's Cocoon to Carl Craig's Planet E, returns to Scuba's Hotflush with a bouncy two-tracker that's bound to cause a stir on the dancefloor. "Orbit" takes over the entirety of the A-side with a powerful swell of bass hypnotics, driving percussion shots and a heavy dosage of head-banging. Over on the B-side, "MDMA" is inevitably madder, its bassline being more deranged and broken down...sliding nicely in between equally wonky piano keys and strange atmospherics. Large.

Lando - "Ritual Track" - (7:07) 123 BPM

Oliver Deutschmann - "Sequel" - (5:57) 130 BPM
SCB - "Rolling SN" - (6:16) 130 BPM
Review: The second volume of the Endeavours compilation starts with the artist it is dedicated to - Trevino. "Plugged" shows why the UK producer, who sadly passed away earlier this year, was held in such high esteem - its rich, dubby chords and swaggering groove sounding effortless. By contrast, Ambivalent delivers a rough, rugged take on jacking techno with "Supertouch" under his LA-4A guise, while Lando inhabits similar territory on the grimy "Ritual Track". There are emotions of a different nature audible on TML's "Crying (Piano Mix)", where euphoric keys and haunting vocals unfold over a rolling groove. Oliver Deutschmann provides the toughest, most frenetic track in the shape of the loopy techno "Sequel", while Scuba himself works as SCB to deliver the rough, sample-heavy techno of "Rolling SN".

Phalanx
Phalanx - (5:07) 120 BPM
Warg - (7:01) 122 BPM Hot
Review: The master of dark journey tracks known as Recondite returns, this time for Scuba's esteemed Hotflush imprint. The sombre and doomy vibes of the title track are a bit more restrained than Lorenz Brunner's usual tracks but just as foreboding with those now trademark 'wonky' melodies which truly work a treat. "Warg" on the flip has a bit more momentum and definitely more elements incorporated into its sound. It's funky, in a brooding way of course; with another epic melody for some seriously dramatic dancefloor moments that he's known for.

Jungle Love - (6:45) 129 BPM
Review: Following on from the release of his debut Trevino album earlier this year, Marcus Kaye celebrates another first - his inaugural release on Scuba's label. The title track is underpinned by a typically beefy Trevino low end and provides the basis for atmospheric chords and wave upon wave of jittery melodies. By contrast "Desecrate" is a high-paced techno number, powered by thunder claps and gristly bass stabs and "Mosaic", while less visceral, has an unquestionably functional feel thanks to the surging dub bass and pinprick acid lines that power it. Proving that he is a versatile artist, even when it comes to the dance floor, "Jungle Love" sees Kaye lay down a chord-soaked stepper.

Review: In the three years since his last full-length outing, Personality, Scuba's stock has continued to rise, nudging him further towards to higher echelons of DJ culture. The fact that he now plays colossal rooms and festival headline slots can be heard in the more dancefloor-minded material on Claustrophobia. While some of the best material is more downtenpo and circumspect - see the heady ambience of "Transcience", the spinetingling wooziness of "All I Think About Is Death" and the immersive dubstep of "Needle Phobia" - it's the stripped-back techno throb of "PCP", hissing rhythms of "Television" and the progressive house inspired hedonism of "Why You Feel So Low" that will get most attention.

Lock In - (6:25) 126 BPM Hot
Utopian - (5:25) 125 BPM
Perished - (6:41) 125 BPM
Xirox - (6:28) 124 BPM
Review: Mystery man Auden drops his second EP on Scuba's Hotflush Recordings, a label now worthy of legendary status in the UK house-bass game, and as expected, it's another four cuts of supreme dancefloor delight and 909-driven goodness. "Lock In" takes a rawer-than-raw percussion and chucks a rather splendid collection of dubbed-out chords over it, whereas "Utopian" breaks the groove down into a half-step head-nodder for the corner dwellers. "Perished" heads back to a 4/4 structure backed with another fine dose of dubby, atmospheric trickery, but it's "Xirox" which receives all the brownie points - imagine an Ed Rush and Optical tune circa '97'that's been slowed-down and reinterpreted for the deep house and techno speed. Ultra slick, ultra sick.

Review: Having firmly established himself as a mainstay of the Hotflush family Locked Groove is back on the label once more with some of that ultra-modern 4/4 business. Interestingly "Enigma" points in some way back to the UK bass roots of Scuba's label with its grimey horn stabs, albeit in the context of a haunting house track. "Wandering In A Cage" is a more typically slick tech house jam with a dubby lilt to the synths and a brooding atmosphere for those who find the horns on "Enigma" too much. That said, it's the lead track that gets the remix treatment, first from Scuba who weaves a more wistful arrangement around those hooky stabs, before Locked Groove's own "Dub Mix" shuffles up the samples a touch for a different rhythmic flavour.

Ride With You (Mike Dehnert remix) - (6:11) 122 BPM
Ride With You (Darren Emerson's dub Extravaganza) - (10:25) 120 BPM
Review: As a new project for long-serving house trooper Darren Emerson, The White Lamp seems to be picking up pace swiftly following the well-received singles for Sonar Kollektiv and Futureboogie. Making the move to the ever-more house-orientated Hotflush, this latest single sees Emerson and vocalist Peter Josef get their track "Ride With You" re-examined by a host of characters. Emerson turns out a more club-ready "Dub" that works in some solid drums and lets the simmering vocals swirl in a pot of delay and reverb, leaving it to Mike Dehnert to drop a sparse and cheekily funking abstraction that usurps the warm tones for a cold bite.

Elysium
Elysium - (8:43) 125 BPM Hot
Pulsar - (8:49) 124 BPM
Review: The fortieth release on Scuba's label is a collaboration between Locked Groove and the fast-rising Italian pair Mind Against. If there was any doubt that Hotflush represents an accessible take on underground techno, then this is it delivered with a palpable self-confidence. "Elysium" is based on tribal beats, but its groove pulses insidiously and the melodic breakdown is reminiscent of Kompakt's classic trance sheen. "Pulsar" follows in a similar vein and the arrangement, erm, pulses hypnotically. Although similarly pristine hooks and sparkling synths are audible, on this occasion it's all about the groove that gets increasingly intense until the inevitable climax.

Make It Real (ESS remix) - (7:44) 125 BPM
Review: In Scuba's ever-deepening commitment to emotive tech house, Hotflush score a big coup in teaming up with Agoria for this EP of expansive big room beasts that know just as much about subtlety as brashness. The title track holds back in all the right places to create a palpable tension that simply builds throughout the track, without losing any of that all important presence, while "Make It Real" finds the French producer throwing down chunky chords for everyone to instantly latch on to. ESS delivers a remix of the latter that adds some crafty drum hooks into the mix and a little additional emotive synth work for an equally sizable dancefloor cut.

Review: SCB had been an alias for Scuba's dance floor-focused techno tracks, but as Caibu and the EPs that preceded it demonstrate, it is now also a vehicle for the UK producer to explore different styles and to articulate his concerns about modern society. Tracks like the bleep-heavy "Test Tubes" and the storming, big room "Manufactured Consent" - the title a riff on the classic Chomsky tome - show that the project remains synonymous with killer techno, but Caibu succeeds largely by showcasing SCB's other side. "The Cut" is a shimmering, widescreen piece of music, the tone-laden breaks of "Freedom for the Fifty" sees Scuba seek justice for a wronged group, while the warbling, off-centre "Extinct" is an understated sound track for end of times.

Review: In the last several years, German producer Lorenz Brunner has established himself as one of the most defining voices in techno with his singular sound. You just know a Recondite track when you hear one: dark/epic and melodic journeys that have brought ultimate euphoria to many of the world's biggest dancefloors and courtesy of a who's who of labels. From Innervisions and Life & Death through to Dystopian, to name but a few. Another revered institution that has championed his work of course, is Hotflush, and the brilliant Bavarian is their next label stalwart to be thrust under the spotlight as part of their Update series. The much celebrated DRGN / Wist 365 EP from 2012 appears, in addition to ?2014's Caldera and last years Phalanx EP. Plus, not one, but two remixes of label boss Scuba's "The Hope".

Review: It seems Paul Rose can do no wrong. With a successful career that has gone from strength to strength through its many phases in the last several years he returns with another masterclass, peak time production taken from his new album Claustrophobia. "Black On Black" goes back to his trance inspired explorations of a few years ago, hypnotising you into submission with its epic synth lead while doom laden Carl Craig style synth stabs lurk in the background. Speaking of all things dark and apocalyptic, who better than getting Berghain and Figure main man Len Faki in for a remix. No surprises here; he turns in a version just as epic than the original.

Review: Last year saw Dense & Pika make Hotflush their home after Alex Jones and Christopher Spero's project first surfaced via a select few white label releases. Aside from a remix of the Woolford classic "Erotic Discourse", Dense & Pika have been notably quiet on the release front so this new four-track slab for Scuba's label will be most welcome. Already in possession of a warehouse-ready style of techno, the Klank EP suggests it's been further honed in their time away from the spotlight with the title cut a particularly weighty production that has a low end that growls like a dragon. From here the pair enter submerged depths on "Wandering Hands" before the B-side signals a return to more chaotic fare with "Slowhand" and "Slacker".

Review: Scuba's Hotflush label introduce Auden, a producer described simply as "A fresh voice in UK techno" by the label and whose self titled debut EP fits in snugly alongside recent releases from South London Ordnance and Scuba himself. Proceedings commence with "Trip To Fade" a broken yet beatless track that will lend itself to anyone requiring an atmospheric opener for their DJ mixes, whilst "Flex" is the first chance we get to see Auden flex (sorry) his percussive muscles on a dynamic techno production that has some neat delayed effects. The acid dipped "Whispers" showcases Auden's talent for developing a sense of subtle sonic tension, something that is explored further on the mammoth eleven minute closer "Tension".

Review: Continuing to solidify his relationship with Hotflush after last year's Revolver 12", South London Ordnance is bringing his muscular yet supple modern techno back for a chunky four-track EP. "Contact" operates on many levels, packing a smooth and linear groove over which a beefy beat throbs out, hitting with the kind of hi-tech studio sheen that makes Trevino tracks shimmer, while slipping in some more delicate melodic details where it counts. "Sabre" takes a more minimal stance, channeling the energy of mid '00s M_nus into a slightly more industrial headspace. "Ritual Romance" creates its own kind of eerie vibe with a bulbous square wave synth line, while the beat stays light and nimble. "Output" rounds things off with a peppy but ultimately spiritual romp into yet more crafty production styles for the modern dance.

His first release: 2010's The Let Down / Weakness EP appears here as part of another instalment in the label's Update series, where core artists are placed under the spotlight with an impressive body of work. 2011's excellent Shackled EP is represented, featuring all three tracks (including the rather lush "Friends In High Places"), as well as 2013's Thinking Of You EP. Review: Tim Van de Meutter aka Locked Groove's debut album is a product of its surroundings. A Belgian native, the Hotflush artist draws on his home country's rich electronic music heritage to create a unique soundtrack. Rave is represented by the uplifting break beats and time-stretched vocals of Nate Brown on "Pudding", on "Out of Orbit", he draws on the tripped out, hypnotic sound of New Beat and "Oscillate" is a sublime slice of Belgian trance. On other occasions, Van de Meutter takes inspiration from classic house - witness the Lil' Louis-style "Do Not Freak" - or deep techno jams such as "From Beyond", but in the main, this is truly a Belgian affair.

Voices - (6:22) 124 BPM
Burn Out - (5:47) 124 BPM
Review: A marked difference from his most recent Scuba originals, 'Expectations' signals a contrasting path for sonic exploration by the Hotflush chief - covering house, garage and rave sounds. He references classic Stateside house of the early '90s on the title track to stunning effect, before heading down an introspective route on the evocative acid epic "Voices" (including Rose's own vocals) and going deeper on the glassy-eyed and melancholic vibe of "Burn Out" - calling to mind his earlier output several years ago under the SCB alias. It also features recordings of live acoustic riffs by the artist. Cover art by Lando (Decadence Comics).

Review: The mysterious Auden drops his third EP for Scuba's label. The title track has a commercial appeal thanks to its 'give in to hunger' vocal sample, but the backing track is strictly underground, with dreamy chords and acidic pulses prevailing. On "Simmer Down", there are no vocals, and instead a dense, rolling groove and acid-soaked licks gradually move to the surface. Alan Fitzpatrick's version of "Hunger" is pure dance floor abandon as tough, grainy kicks underpin the vocal sample. Auden has another side to his musical palette however and "Sewer System" sees deep chords unravelling over a wispy, abstract rhythm.

Review: 2013 was the last time we heard from Praveen Sharma aka Braille and Travis Stewart aka Machinedrum, who together have always made music as Sepalcure. In fact, it was this project that allowed them to make a name for themselves via Scuba's Hotflush Recordings, and the duo return to the the label with this new album, Folding Time. The best way to describe these scorchers is to dub them under neo-R&B, a rather wide banner, we know, but it really gets the mood of these tunes across. Electronic beats are always an important part of the arrangements, but the melodies and vocals are soulful, drenched in a spiritual pop flair that makes this LP as smooth as f***, and a perfect comeback to this great project.

Review: Hotflush head honcho Scuba returns to his esteemed imprint, following up hot releases by Liverpudlian newcomer Or:la, scene stalwart/acid freak LA-4A and the experimental electronics of Munich's Pyur. Under his SCB alias, he is probably best known for 'heads-down' style grooves and definitely more on the aggressive side. The dusty and dank "Test Tubes" is warm-up music for clandestine warehouse raves, while "Freedom For The Fifty" sees him offer up an impressive perspective of old school, Detroit style electro. From here, you start to see that it's a really diverse yet cohesive offering: with the hypnotic dancefloor drama of "Oration" showing something more consistent with his label's overall sound, while the evocative and life affirming retro electronica of "Laboratory Conditions" closes out the EP in style - something you would have heard at one of those legendary raves under the M25 back in the early '90s.

Review: This is the first in a series of two mini-compilations on Hotflush and is dedicated to Trevino, who died earlier this year. First up are German pair Glaskin, who drop the techy, stepping "Cosmic Dance Interlude", followed by Or:la with the deep but jacking "B.W.U.W". Ambivalent makes his Hotflush debut under his LA-4A guise to drop the jacking "How I Feel", with Terr's "Find A Way" occupying a relatively similar space. Label boss Scuba unleashes the noisy, primal techno of " Boulahrouz" under his SCB alias and Israeli producer Yotam Avni rounds off the first volume with the stripped back, minimal groove of "Baduk". This first instalment is a fitting tribute to the UK producer.

Review: Acclaimed Italian duo Mind Against return with a four-track EP of spiralling, hypnotic techno on acclaimed label Hotflush - for the second time since "Elysium" / "Pulsar" (with Locked Groove) in 2015. From the tunnelling adrenaline rush of the title track which is sure work the floor under the strobelight, there's also the brooding heads-down factory floor stomp of "Forevermore" and a bit of material more familiar of the duo on the epic dance floor drama of "Mirage" - complete with its wonky bass line, intoxicating melodies and euphoric pad layers all geared for some moments of pure zen in the main room.

Review: The latest compilation from Scuba's label features some of dance music's most distinctive producers. Recondite delivers "Pour", a throbbing, spaced out groove that will leave listeners mesmerised. Locked Groove, another Hotflush regular, also focuses on the deeper end of techno with the hypnotic, flowing "From Beyond". The compilations also includes "If You Still Want Me", an evocative house cut from Yotam Anvi, where plaintive vocals unravel over a dubbed out groove, while Scuba himself impresses with the synth-heavy "Nineteen Eighty" and, working as SCB, drops the steely, stepping rhythm of "Five Degrees". Floor 2.1 is an essential release for anyone with even a passing interest in forward-facing techno and house.

Review: The latest release from Hotflush boss Scuba is reminiscent of the sound he made a few years back under his SCB alias. Irrespective of the reasoning to release under his own name, the fact remains that "PCP" is a hugely effective, dubby techno affair. Based on a shuffling rhythm and featuring some insistent vocal samples, it sees the UK producer embrace a spacious, textured sound that will nonetheless work in a big room. The remix comes from Mathew Dear's Audion project, and doesn't disappoint. Fusing the grindhouse bleep and blips of big room techno with insistent, stepping rhythms, it makes for an unusual but rewarding reshape.

Review: Argentina's Shall Ocin has been making and releasing tunes since 2012, but this latest appearance on Scuba's larger-than-life Hotflush Recordings is sure to be the artist's winnig ticket, thus far. Seeing as the London label has branched out onto house and techno over the last few years, "The Cliff" is a perfect addition to the catalogue, and its power drums are just the right thing for its warm, driving bassline. Although it also flies under the techno moniker, "The Mist" is tamer, more contained and could eb the perfect weapon to bridge one killer with another on the old mixer. Fresh, full of energy and utterly banging.

Review: Following on from the recent 2.1 compilation, Hotflush again shows why it is such an essential dance floor label. It features established artists like Agoria, who drops the discordant tones and spiky minimalism of "Helice" and Recondit with the deep, dubbed out "Channel" , alongside emerging producers like Glaskin with the twisted acid of "You Are Simply A Machine". No Hotflush compilation would be complete without its owner Scuba's input; here it takes various forms, including a broken beat remix of "Ruptured" by Surgeon, and the SCB sub-project dropping the sub-bass led "Rope". If that wasn't reason enough to buy Floor 2.2, there is also a fine techno track from the late, great Trevino.

Review: Next up on Scuba's esteemed Hotflush imprint is Brazilian newcomer Daniela Caldellas aka Terr with the driving and hypnotic techno journey entitled "Misantropicalia", which follows up last years awesome Burn The Past EP. The title track is awash in layers of razor sharp arpeggios; it's quite reminiscent of Croatian legend Petar Dundov in a away, and that's a compliment. On "OutRun" she throws down some griity electro-funk which is no doubt informed by a healthy love of legends such as Dopplereffekt or Drexciya, while "Don't Look Around" goes for something different again on this spacey, neon-lit electro house cruiser.

Review: Label boss Scuba dons his SCB alias to deliver this split release with Wehbba, who has previously released on high-profile labels like Drumcode and Tronic. That hypnotic, big-room sound is audible on "Survival", where steely drums are fused with wild acid pirouettes. The title track is less intense, and sees the duo deliver a pulsating groove that's framed by steely percussion and ponderous vocal samples. "New Culture" is more stripped back, with this unlikely pairing focusing again on those steely drums, underpinned this time by an insistent filter. "Green Planet" is similarly focused, as rolling, Palstikman-style percussion and acid drones unravel over solid kicks.

Review: Sascha Borchardt has almost exclusively put out music by his Monoloc project on CLR, but he recently released an EP on Soma. Now the German producer continues his move into the mainstream with a release on Scuba's Hotflush. It's an atmospheric, esoteric release and proves that Borchardt is on the cusp of crossing over. The title track and "Makeless" are downtempo tracks, full of floaty, swirling textures and throbbing low end tones. However, it's "Trysome" that really stands out. The groove is inspired by Basic Channel's scuffled dub and the falsetto vocal could be from a New Jersey house track. United by a chiming synth, they come together to make for a bizarre but brilliant track.

Why You Feel So Low - (6:52) 127 BPM Hot
Review: After time spent enjoying the instant gratification of electro and pop styles on his more recent output, Scuba is making a return to more introspective matters on his impending Claustrophobia LP, and he precedes it with this atmospheric taster. It certainly harks back to the melancholic atmosphere of albums like A Mutual Antipathy and Triangulation, albeit with a strong thread of Berlin techno restraint as more commonly witnessed in his SCB alias. With its probing low end and taut piano and string arrangements, there are a lot of subtle dimensions to this track which on first listen seems like a simple proposition. As ever, Scuba refuses to rest in one place.

Falling Down (Auden remix) - (6:13) 122 BPM
Review: For a producer who has released on a label like Drumcode and who is synonymous with big-room, white noise-saturated techno, Falling Down comes as a surprise. It shows a far deeper side to the amiable Fitzpatrick's canon, and it also suggests that he's just as adept as making melodic dance floor grooves. The title track starts off with stuttering, rattling percussion before trailing off into an evocative, melodic build-up. "Vanishing" is even more impressive; over sweet strings and chords, Fitzpatrick drops the kind of dreamy vocal snatch that you might expect to hear in one of Legowelt's more mellow tracks. Auden's remix of the same track is slower and heavier, but doesn't sacrifice Fitzpatrick's melodies.
