How Do You Are?/Too Slow To Disco

How Do You Are?/Too Slow To Disco

After smooth detours into Soul covers, French Neo-Disco, modern Sunset Disco and Brazilian AOR, in 2022 DJ Supermarkt’s Too Slow to Disco series makes a joyous return to its original Westcoast AOR/Yacht roots. Celebrating the 10th TSTD compilation. Who would have thought….
The Berlin curator releases a killer 4th edition of the original compilation art form, “Too Slow to Disco”, featuring forgotten and overseen gems from the mid 70s to the early 80s from a global world of smooth. Brilliant lost and overproduced tracks from Finland via London and L.A. to Trinidad and beyond.
The great ‘un-vanisher’ of lost lazy classics, DJ Supermarkt once again unearthed some incredible music that labels, publishers (in many cases also those, who actually own the rights to those tracks…) and streaming services have often long overlooked. You’re welcome, world!

Too Slow To Disco Edits 14: Flying Mojito Bros
Good Feeling - (7:02) 117 BPM Hot
Fadin' West Of LA - (7:42) 95 BPM
Review: According to their website, Too Slow To Disco Edits' latest recruits, the Flying Mojito Brothers, are "two country-disco mescoleros pioneering the great electronic wilderness". The reworks showcased on this rather charming two-tracker are in some ways fully in-keeping with the more disco-fied end of their output, with a more up-beat workout paired with a deliciously low tempo affair. In the former camp is the superb 'Good Feeling', a rolling and steadily building affair that stretches out a rubbery bassline propelled, soul-flecked disco groove before introducing the vocals and wider instrumentation from their (rather good) source material. In contrast, 'Fadin' West', a sunset-ready revision of an AOR disco/swamp funk fave, is classic Too Slow To Disco fare - dewy-eyed, tactile and rather lovely.

Fall In Love In Outer Space (The Reworks Pt 1)
Prime Time Band & Turbotito - "Fall In Love In Outer Space" (Turbotito rework) - (5:25) 96 BPM Hot
Prime Time Band & Those Guys From Athens - "Fall In Love In Outer Space" (Those Guys From Athens rework) - (4:28) 100 BPM
Review: Prime Time Band's 'Fall In Love In Outer Space' is one of the undoubted highlights of the latest Too Slow To Disco compilation - a quirky, 1985 curiosity that blends AOR, soft rock and spacey, synth-laden disco. Here the track is given the remix treatment by Too Slow To Disco Edits regulars Turbito and Those Guys From Athens. The former provides rework number one, adding even more layers of tactile electronics and echoing effects to the obscure outfit's sumptuous, soft-touch vocals and instrumentation. It's pleasingly dubbed-out, all told, and with a BPM of a touch over 96 is a guaranteed slow-dance treat. Those Guys From Athens continue on a similarly dubby theme while beefing up the beats and reaching for filter effects. The results are arguably even more dancefloor ready.

Fall In Love In Outer Space (The Reworks Part 2)
Fall In Love In Outer Space (Blank & Jones Ride A Sunbeam rework) - (4:49) 93 BPM Hot
Fall In Love In Outer Space (Chuggin Edits rework) - (4:41) 84 BPM
Review: Prime Time Band were an 80s funk/jazz/jazz-funk outfit helmed by legendary saxophonist Ornette Coleman, and here DJ Supermarkt's Too Slow To Disco bring us a brace of reworkings of their 1985 single 'Fall In Love In Outer Space', which previously featured on 'Too Slow To Disco Vol 4'. Neither Blank & Jones nor Chuggin' Edits have messed with the song structure too much, but B&J's Ride The Sunbeam Rework is the hazier and dreamier of the two, while the Chuggin' Edits rub brings the strings and vocal a little further to the fore. Mellow mellow? Right on!

Too Slow To Disco Edits 13: Ben Jamin
Dreams - (6:20) 110 BPM
I'm Yours - (5:40) 108 BPM Hot
Conclusion - (6:30) 85 BPM
Moment Is Real - (6:48) 90 BPM
Review: Scouse disco misfit Ben Jamin makes his bow on Too Slow To Disco's popular edit series, following a handful of rock-solid releases for the likes of Hot Digits, Discoholics Anonymous and Hot Gorilla. He starts in fine fashion with 'Dreams', an unashamedly groovy and loose-limbed tweak of a sweet, loved-up disco number complete with undulating bass guitar, misty-eyed lead vocals and tactile turn-of-the-80s instrumentation, before opting to rearrange a more urgent (at least energy-wise) chunk of orchestrated disco hedonism on 'I' Yours'. The Liverpool-based producer slows things down further on sub-100 BPM synth-soul number 'Conclusion', before returning to warmer and woozier pastures on the effortlessly atmospheric, bass-heavy and filter-sporting bliss of 'Moment Is Real'.

HOLDTight - "Be My Love 2 Nite" - (5:33) 100 BPM Hot
Delfonic - "Let's Go Disco" - (4:56) 99 BPM
Jack Tennis - "Jorge's Pipa" - (6:32) 107 BPM
Those Guys From Athens - "4 Your Love" - (4:34) 86 BPM
Review: If warming, glassy-eyed midtempo disco niceness is your thing, we'd heartily recommend this languid, sun-drenched edits offering from the Too Slow To Disco camp. It's packed to the rafters with toasty, afternoon-ready fare that's arguably best listened to while decked out in boat shoes, pastel-coloured shorts and a stripy t-shirt. HOLDTight steps up first with the head-nodding, saucer-eyed shuffle of future yacht disco classic 'Be My Love 2Nite', before Delfonic offers up a fine rearrangement of an obscure, breathy and seductive disco gem full of prominent Moog synth sounds, jaunty pianos and whispered vocals. 'Jorge's Pipa' by Jack Tennis is a fine, floor-friendly tweak of a disco-era Brazilian gem, while Those Guys From Athens' '4 Your Love' is a seductive disco slow jam straight from the top shelf.

Too Slow To Disco Edits 12: DJ "S"

Sweet Love - (5:55) 85 BPM
Back Again - (5:23) 91 BPM
U - (5:28) 103 BPM
Review: If it's slow-motion dancefloor thrills you seek, Too Slow To Disco's popular re-edit series should already be on your radar. The latest EP in the series, which comes courtesy of experienced Greek scalpel fiend DJ S, is a predictably strong offering. The sometime Chopshop contributor shows his class throughout, delivering revisions that add a little more weight whilst allowing his source material room to breathe. He starts by offering his version of a much-loved downtempo disco classic, wisely extending the original version's instrumental passages before introducing the lead vocal ('Groovin'), before dipping the tempo further on the seductive is-it-soul-or-is-it-disco brilliance of 'Sweet Love'. 'Back Again' is a languid chunk of sun-splashed slow motion disco rich in jazzy guitar licks and meandering sax solos, while 'U' is a glassy-eyed, loved-up treat.

Saltywax - "Hammer On The Block" - (6:46) 113 BPM
Mikeandtess - "Hold Us" - (6:00) 110 BPM Hot
Review: On this eleventh instalment in the label's popular edits series, Too Slow To Disco serves up four more wide-eyed, loved-up reworks of tracks from the disco end of the yacht rock spectrum. First to don boat shoes and Ray-Bans is Ben Jamin, who expertly pitches down, subtly beefs up, deftly dubs out and cannily rearranges a France Joli gem from 1981, wisely making use of elements of both the vocal and instrumental versions. David Bay does a great job tampering with a Shalamar classic, opting to employ modern production trickery and some well-placed effects, before Saltywax delivers a thickset, mid-tempo disco-house style revision of a a string-laden epic. Finally, Mikeandtoss's 'Hold Us' is a fine tweak of an insatiably loved-up AOR disco treat.

So Nice - (5:45) 96 BPM
Human - (3:18) 98 BPM
Review: Given the quality of their contribution to the label's Yacht Disco Edits 4 EP, it's little surprise to see Those Guys From Athens (AKA Greek duo DJ Snatch and Blacksoul) at the controls on this tenth instalment of the Too Slow To Disco Edits series. Predictably, they've delivered the goods. They first join forces with Pauli Carman on 'Burnin' Up', a head-nodding and toe-tapping chunk of glassy-eyed, soft-focus disco-soul full of rubbery bass guitar, soft-touch electric piano and simmering strings, before offering their version of another tactile, soulful gem on 'She'. They up the tempo a little and reach for the filter effects on orchestra sporting AOR disco treat 'So Nice', while the EP also offers another chance to savour their admired yacht disco edit 'Human'.

Review: With the DJ Supermarkt-helmed 'Too Slow To Disco' series now up to Vol 439 (or something), you should be familiar with the concept by now. This, though, is one of their occasional series of re-edit EPs rather than a compilation album, and finds French DJ/producer Vibes4YourSoul delving deep into Brazilian music - about which this writer knows very little, so we'll have to forego the whole "ID-ing sources" routine for this one! Still, if laidback grooves built for poolside chillin' are your thing you'll find same here in abundance, while if you're looking for something a little more floor-friendly then 'Joia Da Bahia' is your best bet.

Review: Adelaide-based Italian Dave Mathmos is a prolific re-editor, as a quick glance at his website will quickly prove. He's featured on Too Slow To Disco's edits series before, back in 2019, though this EP is a far more expansive and action-packed affair. There's plenty to savour across the seven tracks on show, with our picks of a very strong bunch including the rubbery, slap bass-propelled AOR disco excellence of 'Encore Une Histoire D'Amour' (a rework of a French language cover of a familiar favourite), the squelchy, Latin-tinged 80s soul gorgeousness of 'Late at Night', a genuine future classic (the mid-80s power synth-pop-goes-electro-disco brilliance of 'My Baby Don't Care', which edits up an unlikely cover of the Beatles) and the reggae infused, low tempo disco-chug of 'Whispers'.

Prime Time Band & Knight One - "Fall In Love In Outer Space" (Knight One rework) - (3:37) 99 BPM
Review: Seven new mixes here of this 1985 cut from Ornette Coleman's jazz-funk outfit Prime Time Band. The first three are all fairly mellow, and not too different from the brace of rubs issued two weeks ago. Those Guys From Athens then up the tempo a little on their more floor-friendly rub, while Vibes4YourSoul add lounge-y elements. HOLDTight's rework has a distinct 80s sheen about it, as to some extent does Delfonic's rub, which is more urgent and pacey in feel and gets seriously loop-y in the vocal department. The Knight One Rework then brings the EP to a close on a slightly wonkier, more leftfield-leaning tip.

Naturally, there's plenty to savour on the series fourth edition, much of it either obscure or previously overlooked. Our picks of a predictably strong collection include the horn-totin', much-sampled Pleasure classic 'Nothin' To It', the lusciously loved-up cosmic soul of Prime Time Band's 'Fall in Love in Outer Space', the eyes-closed, Rhodes-sporting AOR soul of 'Stay The Night' by the Farragher Brothers, the slow release swell of Alan Price's 'Groovy Times' and the sun-splashed jauntiness of Max Leake's 'Tell Me The Reasons'.
