The Jackpot EP
The Jackpot - (4:53) 80 BPM
Rona City Blues - (5:10) 80 BPM Hot
Review: It always feels few and far between a solo Kode9 release if we take into account the last drop under his name - and his name only - was the Xingfu Lu / Kan 12" before his 2015 long player, Nothing. Some collaborative LPs, remixes EPs and other left of field projects later, Kode9 opens Hyperdub's account for 2021 with a synth focused and sample heavy run through two juke joints of footwork inspirations of the Hyperdub bosses current sound and direction. Fresh off appearing in Lawrence Lek's most recent album as a ruthless label boss, Kode9 proves he's the goods for real with "The Jackpot" - harder and more ghoulish rave trip here, with "Rona City Blues" cut up by a fluctuating tremolo effect on its synth that's laced out by a sweet sequence of undeniable footwork drums.

Review: Whenever we are lucky enough to be gifted with a brand new Hyperdub project, we jump for joy, then calm down, dim the lights and get stuck in start to finish. This latest project from Nazar is a masterful display in sound design and we feel is most certainly one to take in on a long play. From the more contemporary structures of 'Immortal' and 'Intercept' to the stunning soundscaping of 'Mother' and 'Retaliation', this one covers an incredible amount of ground across just ten tracks. It's an incredible body of work, with our favourite track being 'Why', which showcases and incredible level of percussive creation.

Review: Hyperdub's year of excellence continues apace with the release of Playing Me, the long awaited debut album from Cooly G. Emerging as a key figure in the UK funky scene some four years ago via some highly prized Dub Organiser CDrs, Cooly's musical progression has been charted via a series of EPs for DVA Music and Hyperdub. On this thirteen track album what is most apparent is the confidence this South London producer has in her own singing, a voice that sounds dipped in pain and anguish at times. At others Cooly utilises her vocal delivery as an integral part of the music, which draws from all manner of UK music history of recent times whilst very much sounding part of her modern house template. Oh and there's a Coldplay cover to end the LP too...

Review: Hyperdub's resident freaky styler DVA throws down a sizable six tracks of loose-limbed cuts that further branch his sound out from his UK Funky roots with typical creative flair. Lead track "Mad Hatter" best demonstrates this, starting life on a live drum stomp before snaking into a broken funk while off-key bass wobbles and manically frayed hits of percussion do the nasty around the snappy beat. Throw in a completely unexpected boogie sample breakdown for good measure and it's clear DVA is having fun in the studio. "Chilli Burrito" is equally deranged in the most essential, party starting of ways, and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Madness / Polyphonic Dreams
Madness (feat Vikter Duplaix) - (3:09) 111 BPM
Madness (instrumental) - (3:09) 111 BPM
Polyphonic Dreams - (4:57) 63 BPM Hot
Review: Ever the wild card, Scratcha DVA flips the script once again as he returns to Hyperdub with soulful crooner Vikter Duplaix in tow. "Madness" bursts into action on a bright and goofy, rising and falling arpeggio, while the beat splutters in a syncopated manner. It makes for an odd foil to the smooth tones of Duplaix, but the end result is something of a wonderfully futuristic pop track. "Polyphonic Dreams" is just about more straight up, riding a funky beat and a more direct synth line, but still Scratcha manages to twist things up with some maverick sampling.

Review: To say that Lauren Halo's peculiar brand of organic-electronic fusion is "acclaimed" would be an understatement. Her 2012 debut LP, Quarantine, was named as The Wire's album of the year. Here, the Ann Arbor raised producer continues to dazzle with another off-kilter selection of curious compositions. Veering from tipsy, near ambient soundscapes (see the unruly "Serendip" and psychedelic "Melt") to clattering percussion jams ("Oneiroi"), via deep techno ("Chance of Rain") and blissful musical simplicity (the piano lament of "Out" and beatless tropical jazz of "Dr Echt"), Chance of Rain is every bit as enthralling, unusual and inspiring as its predecessor. That's high praise indeed.

Oi Dirty (feat Scratcha DVA) - (6:56) 125 BPM Hot
Molly - (6:10) 126 BPM
Review: With the dust long since settled from her Playin' Me album, Cooly G is back in action on Hyperdub with a trio of fresh ideas that show off her evolution as an artist to be reckoned with. Lead track "Hold Me" builds on the atmospheric slant that pervaded G's LP and fills the enchanting space with a lean but purposeful UKF throwdown that rises into psychedelic peaks and melts back down into an especially alluring groove. Old sparring partner Scratcha DVA is back in the mix on "Oi Dirty", as the pair take a loping drum workout and have some fun flinging kitchen sink-esque noises about the room with abandon. "Molly" rounds things off with a focused club track that packs in dubby chords, robotic whirrings and an all-round techno intent that shows a lady in full control of her club-based tendencies.

Review: Jessy Lanza is perhaps the most surprising Hyperdub signing of recent times, a female solo artist extolling the virtues of 90s RnB. Although recent interviews with Lanza have suggested that it's more 80s soul that really floats her boat, fellow Canadian and Junior Boys member Jeremy Greenspan produced the record and they have always had a love for deep 90s RnB. The spectres of both Grimes and Jesse Ware haunt these nine tracks, but not enough to rob Lanza of her own originality. Highlights include spine-tingling "5785021" and the truly sublime "Against The Wall".

Review: Morgan Zarate (of Spacek fame) stays with Hyperdub for the latest in a string of leftfield blazers. "Pusher Taker" kicks things off with some subaquatic vintage R Kelly swing vibes married with a breathy female vocal. Elsewhere we get stuck down a dark alley with some sinister trap business ("Kaytsu"), encounter the darkest tribal drum electro jam ("Tayco") and get dizzy with the quirky, disorientating "This".

Review: Well what a collection we have in front of us here as Hyperdub top dog and all around electronic music machine Kode9 presents his 'Diggin In The Carts Remixes' project, packed full of experimental flavour and unusual design. From the off 'Mister Diviner (The Mahjong Touhaiden)' holds a collection of ascending Japanese melodies in harmonious fusion over trap-style drums, with the military snare rolls of trance-like synth stabs of 'Bad Data (Dezaemo)' following suit. Next, the glitchy yet regal arrangements of 'Temple (Actraiser)' march into play before finishing up in gamer heaven as the subtle 8 bit tones of 'An-Un (Ominous Clouds) (Xak II)' see us out with some serious finesse.

Review: Multidisciplinary artist Fatima Al Qadiri aligns with Hyperdub to release Asiatisch, a keenly anticipated debut album that's described as a "simulated road trip through an imagined China". First coming to prominence on the UNO label in 2011, Al Qadiri has subsequently provoked critical acclaim for the 2012 Desert Strike EP for Fade To Mind that played on her time spent living in Kuwait as a child, while her work under the Ayshay moniker for Tri Angle explored vocals in a unique manner. Asiatisch expands on the political themes of Desert Strike in a new and unexpected way, and acts as a homage to the style of grime known as "sinogrime". Asian motifs and melodies are prominent throughout whilst conceptually Al Qadiri runs through "the fantasies of east Asia as refracted through pulpy Western pop culture". If that wasn't enough to sell you on the concept, opening track "Shanzhai" is a "nonsensical Mandarin" language cover of Sinead O'Connor's "Nothing Compares 2 U".

Girl U So Strong / Take Me Away
Girl U So Strong - (5:24) 141 BPM Hot
Take Me Away - (5:30) 145 BPM
Review: It's been a little while since Kyle Hall dropped his album The Boat Party, but now the Detroit powerhouse is back on Hyperdub to indulge the freakier end of his studio output inline with his previous Kaychunk 12" for Kode 9's outpost. "Girl U So Strong" is a stirring beast of a track, starting in scattered fragments of bass patterns, vocal snippets and woodblock hits, gradually forming into a starlit stepper of the highest calibre. "Take Me Away" comes on like a Detroit take on the Purple phenomenon, all sticky synth lines and Mega Drive melodies but roughed up with ample grittiness.

Review: Always a safe bet for some of the most colourful, playful sounds on Hyperdub, DVA is back at it once again with a sure shot EP that features more collaborative fun and games. Starting off on a seriously strong tip, Addison Groove gets involved in the 808 rich title track, which does some dazzling start-stop acrobatics with the groove while stitching all kinds of jazzy flourishes in and around the beat. Ciara La San lends her vocals to "Pink22" and the end result is a colorful twist up of RnB pop crossover material with that DVA freakiness rubbed into the joints, while Mickey Pearce brings some club-ready rowdiness to "Spoonbender" but can't repress DVA's skill for stripped down weirdness.

Review: Following the artist's All The Time album (2020), her third on Hyperdub since 2013's breakout Pull My Hair Back, Hyperdub compiles a 'mixtape' of remixes from seven artists Lanza herself would love to rework her latest work. Two UK Hyperdub artists make the cut in Proc Fiskal's deconstructed breakdown of "Lick In Heaven" next to the finger clacks and stepping rhythms of Loraine James' version of "Face". Japan's Foodman arrives with a new age exotica remake of "Alexander" alongside the sweet '90s R&B references and themes of Kate NV's mix to "Baby Love". For the dancefloor, DJ Swisha delivers this EP its hit track with a set of well swung, banging hi hats in "All The Time" while something unique, futuristic and high definition comes from Invisible Cloaks. Rough and ready breakbeats from Martyn Bootyspoon too!

Review: Born in Mexico and raised in the Sierra, now based in Houston, Panch Briones aka Santa Muerte drops his debut EP on Hyperdub. His melodic electronic music is said to take inspiration from the mythology and religion of Mexican culture, merged with the bass heavy sound of his hometown's hip-hop scene. The Eslabon EP begins with the off-kilter and deeply emotional groove of "Tonantzin", followed by the deeply meditative bass frequencies of "Coahuiltecan", moving into the industrial tinged ambient epic "Emma" and ending with the complex and entrancing rhythm work on glassy-eyed number "Laberinto".

Review: More next level dubs from The Bug allows Hyperdub to present In Blue, a new collaborative project between Kevin Richard Martin and producer-vocalist Dis Fig, aka Felicia Chen. With the album described by the pair as 'Tunnel Sound' its seven tracks conjure up a foggy vision of what's been expressed as narco-dancehall, zoned-out soul and dread drenched in low end frequencies and melancholic meltdowns. Not too distant from Martin's work in King Midas Sound, Chen gives this project a fresh personality through her experimental and stylistic charm of 'hushed confessionals' and 'bittersweet vocals' sung with 'seduction' and 'delicate delivery'. Mixed entirely during lockdown somewhere in Brussels, its deeply impactful tones boom with an unrivalled supersonic, with slow tempos shining through in "In 2 U" alongside more functional techno semantics in "Forever" - bringing to mind albums like Eno's Small Craft On A Milk Sea and KMS' legendary Waiting For You. Five stars.

Chemz - (12:31) 146 BPM
Review: Keeping the UK vibes strong this December period is Burial's "Chemz", an epic 12-minute number taking in huge inspirations from R&B and two-step while remaining strong in a post-rave and dubstep aesthetic. With honeysuckle lyrics setting the tone of a love song, detuning and warping techniques play a key part in the track's originality while skimming the surface of Burial's muffled noise floors, foggy atmospheres and deep crackle and pop. Both euphoric, hopeful and melancholic it sees Burial deliver another futuristic number of newskool R&B that meets rave, jungle and dub.

Review: It's grime o'clock at Hyperdub HQ as Terror Danjah and Champion square-off with some midrange baiting badness as cheeky and rude as you would expect from two masters of the art. Danjah's "Glide" actually struts on a peppy 4/4 rhythm, but the synths keep things dutty whilst there are plenty of quirks stitched into the beat. Champion's template on "Bowser's Castle" is broader, with fulsome melodies and a dextrous switch between ring modulating bassline throw downs and glossy synth refrains. In both instances the collaborations between the two bring a more hectic style full of clattering percussion and urgent tempos, clearly fed on the energy of shared studio time.

Review: The title for West London producer Ikonika's second album Aerotropolis supposedly refers to a city centred around an airport, and was apparently chosen because the album is "about height, getting high and become distant". It supposedly underwent more significant polish than her previous productions and it shows; lead single "Beach Mode" sounds like a classic '80s house track, while "Mr Cake" glimmers with all the sheen of classic US boogie and the shimmering arp of "Eternal Mode" shows hints of disco in its DNA. But Ikonika's connection to the darker strains of UK dance music still shine through; the thick bass and syncopated rhythms of "Manchego" are pure grime while the monolithic "Mega Church" sounds like futuristic, high concept dubstep. Incredible stuff.

Review: More commonly found freaking out grime, bleep and other tropes into surreal computer malfunctions, on "Beach Mode" Ikonika is wholeheartedly embracing her poppy side with some breathy vocal help from Jessy Lanza. The backing track is straight up late-80s house, with chart-friendly synth breakdowns and bridges aplenty, while the dutiful bassline keeps on trucking all the way through and plenty of cheeky drum machine tom fills. The title says it all about what this track is built for. The "Dub" keeps on the tradition of '80s b-sides too with a more club-friendly version that takes the core elements, ditches the vocal and simply jacks on through. As if to complete the package, there's even a stripped drum n vocal n delay version just like momma used to make.

Kathy Lee - Single
Kathy Lee - (4:09) 141 BPM
Review: London's longstanding bass institution Hyperdub is known for picking out the hottest new talent out there, and Kode 9 has done it again by finding Ontario artist Jessy Lanza. It's a single-track EP in advance of her full debut album in September, but "Kathy Lee" - co-produced by Junior Boys' Jeremy Greenspan - is pretty special in itself; it amalgamates just the right amount of bass with poppy synth melodies, slow, winding vocals by Lanza herself and a grooving half-step beat to go with it. Hyperdub doing things in fine style, as per usual.

Xingfu Lu / Kan
Xingfu Lu - (4:40) 112 BPM Hot
Kan - (3:14) 80 BPM
Review: Inspired by some time spent in Shanghai, the Hyperdub main man makes a long-awaited return with this no-messing two tracker that sees him venturing into ever more curious realms of rhythmic abstraction. "Xingfu Lu" shudders on a trap-like framework, sparse but heavy hitting all in the same breath. The melodies sport that oddly comforting sense of otherworldliness that has always characterised Steve Goodman's musicality even as the groove playfully fits and starts. "Kan" is a more feisty proposition, moving erratically between different motifs and getting even twitchier in the drums department while found sounds slip in between the miniscule cracks between the hats and snares. It's a bewildering effect that suggests interesting pastures new are in sight for Kode 9.

Review: In her third album for Hyperdub Loraine James invites us into a captivating new chapter of her personal and sonic journey that takes inspiration from her past and present. She delivers a record that resonates with the musical inclinations of her teenage years, offering a nostalgically languid and delightfully eclectic collection of music inspired by odd genres like 'math rock' and 'emo-electronic sounds'. For some the album could evoke memoriesa of artists like DNTEL, Lusine, and Telefon Tel Aviv - with James's sonic palette skilfully woven into an unique sonic landscapes. Extracting sensitive and introspective tones through complex, deft and wild production, the album can drifts into serene ambience, as if searching for moments of everyday bliss ("2003"), to stripped backed wax poetics of "D?j? Vu ft. RiTchie" alongside a new wave & acoustic breakbeats sound in "I DM U". As gentle and deep as it gets. Quality.

Review: There aren't many labels that can genuinely hold a candle to the electronic mastery that Hyperdub have been able to deliver over the last decade alone, seeing their catalogue now bulging at the seams with the most intuitive dance music innovation. This latest collection takes the title '10.4' and supplies us with a deep dive into the full spectrum of where Hyperdub are at, with legendary figures such as Ikonika, Cooly G, Scratch DVA, Martyn, Funkystepz and many more all making their return for a fabulous compilation display. From the high energy rave-inspired synth slinks of Ill Blu's 'Bellion' to the unorthodox percussive bubbles of 'Noyfb' from Laurel Halo & iconic glitchy melodies of Burial's 'Lambeth', this is a truly fabulous exploration into just how abstract electronic dance music can get. Another exceptional collection from a truly outstanding imprint!

Review: AIDOL is the soundtrack to a work by London-based Chinese-Malay visual artist and musician Lawrence Lek. The film, featuring Hyperdub founder Kode9 as an 'unforgiving label boss,' plays on futuristic, neon pop and megacity themes of EDM superstardom alongside visions of China's global ascent, artificial intelligence and technology. Said to be a continuation of Lek's 'sinofuturist' universe, everything from Akira inspirations and Aldous Huxley references ("Welcome To SoMA") to the sonority of The Knife's music (in "Call Of Beauty (ESports Reprise))" can be felt here, with the added touch of the main character's voice, Diva, created with a vocaloid vocal synthesizer. With spoken word collaborations from Sophie Guo, Xiaoyi Nie, Xiaoran Wu and Joni Zhu adding to Lek's story of a 'fading superstar' who hires an AI songwriter for a comeback performance, tracks also feature Seth Scott who's worked with Lek in the past, of note 2017's Geomancer. More than a ghost in the machine. 5 stars.

Last spotted improvising and collaborating with dBridge and Kabuki on Exit, "Magnetic" is her first multi-track EP since 2015's "Armz House". "Hard" is takes the lead with a shimmering rhythmic pattern that hints at toughness but gets sweetened with chords. Those hungry for tougher tones should jump on her heavy hitting "Grimm" while "Distorted" closes the deal with iced out electro references and some of her darkest bass dynamics to date. Get magnetised.

Review: Gervase Gordon aka Okzharp has already appeared on Hyperdub before; the artist came through with an unscrupulously future-minded 'bass' EP last year, a release that we thought sat perfectly well within the general Hyperdub sound. He's back after an appearance for Keysound, and he's joined by the vocal talents of Manthe Ribane across these four tunes. "Teleported" proceeds to drop some pure tribal vibes on us, and the tune feels like the soundtrack to a post-apocalyptic film set in Africa in the year 2050; a sublime start to this newfound collaboration, and we recommend this EP for that tune alone. "B U" and "Maybe This" are a cunning reinterpretation of grime seen through the eyes of American soul and blues, while "Piki Piki" is ventures into what we like to call post-r&b; careful now, we don't that is a genre in itself, but rather a great description for what this track sounds like to our ears.

Review: Hyperdub have to be one of the best labels in the world for discovering cool new sounds and themes, and it appears they have done so again here as they unveil a weighty four track offering from Lady Lykez. This EP is packed with energy, kicking off with the pulsating vocal rhythms and scattering carnival drum rolls of 'Muhammed Ali', which as a remix features the legendary Lioness. We take a afrobeats style spin next as the murky swings of 'Lyke U' wade into play, followed by the vibrant tribal percussive leads of 'Drmatic'. The EP then finishes up in funky fashion as the bouncy drumwork and skippy flows of 'Buzz Lightyear' see us over the finishing line.

Review: Rapidly following up 2011's superb Keysound long-player Routes, production trio LV make a logical move to Hyperdub for Sebenza, an album that features a trio of South African vocal talent, including Okmalumkoolkat from Dirty Paraffin, Spoek Mathambo and MC/producer duo, Ruffest, and production that takes in Kwaito, Soca, kuduro and UK funky to create its own unique sound. Standouts include the dark and urgent title track, the snappy vocal wit of "Animal Prints" and the spiky digital dancehall of "Nothing Like Us". But like Routes, Sebenza is much more than simply a collection of disparate dance tracks, but a rich tapestry of influences that is light years ahead of their nearest competition
