Review: He may not yet be an international success story like some of his South African peers, but Dwson is certainly an artist on the rise. That much is proved by the Cape Town-based producer's latest EP for IMPLSV. Check first title track 'In Her Eyes', where woozy vocal samples, mystical motifs and undulating lead lines rise above a bouncy Afro-deep beat and warped, gut-bothering bass, before turning your attention to the breezy, percussion-rich deep Afro-house excellence of 'Peta' (it, too, boasts a sub-heavy bassline). 'Tormented Soul' is an even deeper and dreamier affair built around a sparse but bustling beat and rising, acid-style electronics, while 'Nights On The Floor' is a classic-sounding chunk of hushed, early morning deepness.
Review: Since making his debut back in 2018, Dwson has notched up a number of significant releases, not least a well-regarded EP on Freerange and a couple of digital-only albums. A Tape For You, his new album, is notable for the impressive array of collaborators and producers the South African deep house don has been able to call on. Julian Gomez makes his presence felt on the dreamy, tech-tinged deep house soul number 'Lover', Atjazz appears on the wonderfully melodious, luscious and fluid 'Weightless', and Hyenah and Apple Gule star on the tech house-goes-Afro house goodness of 'The Silence'. Highlights across the rest of the set include the warming and tactile shuffle of 'You & Me', the groovy but driving peak-time workout 'Valentina' and the ultra-deep, sunrise-ready SGVO collaboration, 'Alcatraz'.
