Review: Marcel Fengler's HARDPROOF series continues its impressive stride into the new year with its fourth edition, featuring five original tracks by Sons Of Hidden, Rey Brennan, JANEIN, Mathys Lenne, and Jay York. From the pulsating energy of "Forgotten Garden" by Sons Of Hidden to Rey Brennan's relentless "Defender" with its savage low-frequency power, the VA delivers a diverse yet cohesive blend of minimal techno potency. JANEIN's "Perseids" takes listeners on a hypnotic tribal-tinged journey, while Mathys Lenne's "Lisa" offers ominous vibes and industrial grooves. Jay York closes the release with "Halsey," featuring an alien feel and narcotic musicality against a backdrop of stadium-sized beats. Each track showcases the artists' creativity and skill, making this installment another standout addition to the HARDPROOF series.

Review: Following a series of releases on Amelie Lens' Lenske imprint, Milo Spykers drops his debut EP for Marcel Fengler's label. This four-tracker is an intense affair and gets off to a fittingly ominous start with the title track. Powered by a brutal, noisy bass and razor sharp, rattling percussion, it's a propulsive piece of club techno. On "Happex", the fast-rising Belgian producer combines a dramatic electronic filter with jagged hi hats to create epic builds, while adopting a slightly different approach, "The Helicity" sees buzzing electronic riffs fused with pounding kicks to create a stripped back peak-time track. Label boss Marcel Fengler is on hand to deliver a driving, pared version of the title track.

Review: The IMF label is run by Berlin-based techno stalwart Marcel Fengler and boy does he keep a tight ship! There's no chaff on this guy's watch and his latest signing Avion has passed the test with flying colours. That said, Avion is also boss of his own label Crossing so he knows a thing or two about quality himself. The title track is also the EPs fastest, a distant echoey haze of a tune. Elsewhere "Real" is a thumping, unforgiving Detroit-style minimal techno, "Inverse" is cool, lo-fi electro-tech and lastly "Enidan" is a beguiling excursion into beautifully mournful ambient soundscapes.

The Hope - (6:03) 132 BPM
Review: Push is Hessler's second release for the IMF label. In many ways, it encapsulates the owner on Marcel Fengler's propensity for diverse but always driving sets on the main floor in Berghain. The title track is the embodiment of peak time; hints of Chicago jack run through the linear rhythm, but it's that pounding, all-powerful kick that has the greatest impact. "The Hope" sees the east German producer slow down the pace without sacrificing his power thanks to a moody, system-levelling bass. While there are traces of Chicago and Detroit on these tracks, Hessler then turns his attention to a particularly Germanic strain of techno on "Rise" and "Reflections"; there, eerie riffs are fused with tough rhythms and insistent filters for a thrilling combination.

Review: Marcel Fengler has certainly carved out his own style like the other Berghain residents as a producer. His cyclical, funky and above all functional DJ tools firmly wear their Robert Hood influence on their sleeve, all the while carrying some of the powerful and industrial undertones that come naturally given the aesthetic and sound of that famous room he plays, week in week out. For another outing on his own IMF imprint, the Kyu EP features some heavy artillery for serious techno DJs, highlights being the dynamic opener "Kyu" which couldn't be any more perfect an example of what 21:00 on a Sunday night at Berghain sounds like. On the flip the more hypnotic "Shitau" features Millsian style chimes and sonar bleeps balanced out by those soulful and emotive elements, creating pure futurist tension of the greatest kind.

Review: Hot on the heels of their well-regarded debut album, Immersion, Germany's Zenker Brothers pop up on Index Marcel Fengler with four more tracks of dancefloor-focused techno. Opener "Night Hustler" has a surprisingly bumpy feel, with expertly programmed cymbals working in unison with a rising and falling refrain. The unflinching "Bias" - all dense drums and early '90s riffs - has an altogether ravier feel, while Philipp Von Bergman hook-up "Karma Lounge" pairs up high octane rhythms with a restless melodic motif. Finally, the duo doffs a cap once more to the early '90s with the hands-in-the-air riffs and pounding percussion of "Neunkeu".

Review: Rebooted with a fine split release featuring Vril, Thomas Hessler, and label boss Marcel Fengler, the IMF label serves up its first release of 2015 and introduces a rising Berlin talent Somewhen. The more keen eyed techno selectors out there will know Somewhen from the pair of 12"s served up on his own Sana label and this release for Fengler's label should offer him the exposure his productions deserve. Lead track "Dain" is a stripped back thing of wonder, approaching levels of trippiness that put it somewhere between Dozzy and Acido, whilst "Aula" offers a rougher, more unpredictable side to Somewhen's production palette. To end matters, Somewhen lays down a gnarled slab of acid perfect for deep in the night in the shape of "XJ".

Review: For the third release on his label, the Berghain resident has tapped fellow Berlin dweller Thomas Hessler. The similarities don't end there and Perception shares many of the same qualities as Fengler's own productions. "Stratosphere" evolves from lithe break beats into a dark and grungy bass that eventually morphs into a squealing morass. "Consequence" is dance floor based but understated, with a pulsing bass and an intricate web of percussion throughout, while the title track pushes in the opposite direction. Underscored by concrete block beats and rickety percussion, it features a spiraling acid line. Finally, as is also Fengler's wont, Hessler delivers "Distance", a dramatic, sensuous ambient piece of mood music.
