Mise En Place pt 2
Dub Phizix - "Rainy City Music" - (7:03)
Villem - "Splinter In Your Mind" (Break remix) - (5:17) 173 BPM
Skeptical - "Blue Eyes (VIP)" (Blue Eyes) - (6:15) 174 BPM Hot
dRamatic & dbAudio - "No Return" - (7:07)
Review: Mise En Place Pt. 2 is a showcase for some of the most innovative talents in drum and bass today. Ingredients Records certainly know how to stockpile an enviable portfolio of tracks, and some of these beauties have been on the backburner for a while. First track "Rainy City Music" by Dub Phizix has added lingering, hopeful ambiance to the end of sets for a good long while now, but with a proper release, headphones everywhere can experience its full cinematic glow. Villem's "Splinter In Your Mind" gets a fractious and bassy makeover by the elusive Break, puling switches and swapping rhythms like a mad professor in a thunderstorm. Skeptical, the go-to man for dark, minimal drum and bass provides a VIP version of cold-hearted killer "Blue Eyes", where beautiful samples are stamped and warped by high-pressure bass and intricate percussion, adding faster-moving tension to an already sterling track. Finally dRamatic & dbAudio's icy roller "No Return" is soaked in icy atmospherics, with bass that looms terrifyingly out of the mist. Four incredible tracks from producers punching well above the median.

Strangers - (6:26) Hot
The Domino Effect - (6:28)
Played by: Timo Maas
Review: Ingredients are championing this Bristolian trio in a major way right now, and it's hard not to see why. Their deep, industrial, spacious D&B resonates with institutions across the scene from Renegade Hardware to the Critical crew. This EP shows their range better than previous; "Strangers" is them at their deepest, most techno-like with a shifty halfstep and murky, nagging loops. "The Domino Effect" is them at their steppiest thanks to a sharp and snappy riddim. Complete with a stripped back croak bassline, it's a timeless escape - and one that's only going to boost these cats' reputation further.

Nailbomb / Hard Times
Nailbomb - (5:53) 175 BPM Hot
Hard Times - (6:20) 175 BPM
Played by: S Man
Review: Quiet D&B genius ST Files and Mancunian newcomer Response release hard rolling stunner on Ingredients Records - drum and bass world ignites. Always the first stop for D&B heads on the lookout for something with that unique appeal, Ingredients Records has been a symbol of quality for a few years now. ST Files, despite his low profile, has actually been recording for many years and "Nailbomb" represents his newly whetted appetite for producing fresh material alongside co-producer Response. Bringing the unmistakeable warm-yet-techy sound of Marcus Intalex's Manchester to life, both track are featuring heavily on dancefloors across the country. "Hard Times" as a standout track can do no wrong as the top end shimmers above warm bass pressure - a necessity for any discerning drum and bass fan's collection.

Review: Ingredients continue to cut the mustard with their excellent selection and ear for a good tune and this, the third installment of the Choice Cuts series, is no exception. Bringing together a range of top-notch artists including Krakota, Foreign Concept, Jubei, Spirit and more, this album is a pleasure from start to finish. Kicking off with "Be Myself" by Krakota which is full of booming bass and metallic, warping SFX, we are taken through cuts such as Dramatic & dbAudio's "The Green Box" and Jubei's excellent "The Path" with its ominous, eerie atmospherics and whisperings.

Demand - (6:00) 172 BPM
Division 3 - (6:01) 170 BPM Hot
Review: Ruffhouse delivers a couple of killer cuts on Ingredients with the precision and accuracy of a ninja. Dark, moody and delightful these are so watch out D&B heads. Kicking things off is "Demand" which stars with a simple alarm-style bleeping and sparse ticking beats with the occasional drone creeping in and out of focus, gradually building up momentum the bleeping and droning become the body of the tune with humming sub bass and raw, experimental SFX. "Division 3" is another smasher with a terrifying aggression from the off delivered in its hissing, razor sharp beats and pummeling bass which continues for the duration.

Far Away (Total Science remix) - (5:40) 175 BPM Hot
Days Running Out - (6:18) 175 BPM
Played by: Syncopix
Review: A couple of classy cuts here on the Ingredients imprint. First up is the immense Total Science remix of Dramatic & DBAudio - "Far Away" which is all reflective sweeping atmospherics and bleepy sci-fi melodies. A yearning vocal element adds further mournful melancholy to the proceedings whilst low slung humming bass and rumbling subs add oodles of depth. Accompanying this is "Days Running Out" which is a bit more of a tough, terse workout with stomping snares, eerie, experimental SFX and a stern minimalism which really works. Top notch stuff here.

Played by: Syncopix, Philth
Review: A man renowned for giving a masterclass in soulful, deeper D&B steps up for his next release on Psylence's ever-impressive Ingredients imprint (a label which has been impressing with both the quality and quantity of its output of late). First up is title track "Cabal" with its long, echoing intro full of clop clop beats and eerie atmospherics, dropping into a meditative roller with wailing bass and ticking breaks. Accompanying this is "Mud" which is another cracking track full of murmuring SFX, rolling b-line and gentle, delicate details.

Bypass - (6:48) 172 BPM
Review: Ingredients continue to deliver the Michelin starred musical sustenance with an experimental edge and this next release from Ruffhouse continues in this vein. Prepare yourselves for something rather special here as "The Foot" sees Ruffhouse whipping out the big guns for a monstrous dubbed out session with rumbling sub bass pressure, ticking beats and a growing sense of unease. Ominous from the outset, this one is a beast, progressing gradually and with plenty of minimal menace. If that wasn't enough then "Bypass" takes things up a peg or two with some powerful rolling fury and hissing atmospherics. Definitely worth checking out.

Kodo - "The Jackal" (dBridge remix) - (5:37) 174 BPM
Kinetic & Mark Recoil - "Cold Streets" - (6:07) 172 BPM
Foreign Concept - "Jaipur" (Villem remix) - (5:05) 173 BPM Hot
Stealth & Stylus - "One Way" - (5:37) 172 BPM
Review: A tidy little four-track venture here from an assorted range of artists on the excellent Ingredients imprint. A very nice dBirdge remix of Kodo's "The Jackal" gets the party started - think deftly placed beats, whirring sub bass and gentle soundscapes here. Next is Kinetic & Mark Recoil's "Cold Streets" is a sparse, eerie piece with unnerving Metalheadz style FX, creaking beats and whirring background noise. The Villem remix of Foreign Concept's "Jaipur" is another noteworthy cut which blends deep basslines with crisp beats to enormous effect, before Stealth & Stylus close with "One Way".

Tyrone - "Behemoth" - (6:42) Hot
Played by: Presha
Review: Kodo and Tyrone collaborate in part one of this single on Psylence's Ingredients Recordings. "The Jackal" builds from an eerie, cinematic intro, with tense, hissing hi-hats, faded out SFX, and drops suddenly with a vocal calling "I need you", and develops into an inky black bass-driven beast with thunderous subs and tense, ticking beats. "Behemoth" sees Tyrone ride solo for an equally as excellent venture, again full of maintained tension and growling bass warps, but with even more menace and aggression. A top notch release right here.

Played by: Breakbeat.is
Review: Krakota steps up for the next instalment from Ingredients' extensive cookery school. It's deep, weighty bass-led business from the off in title track "Scraper". A sci-fi soaring intro with hissing atmospherics gives way to a bassline roller with razor sharp snares and metallic SFX, before the same out of space symphony returns as the track progresses, adding to the pervasive sense of unease. "Tunnel Vision", its musical accompaniment, again channels a bewildering feel with deep sub bass, whirring b-line and terse, hissing drums. Another excellent offering from the Ingredients camp - delicious!

Review: Psylence's culinary themed label Ingredients comes up with a brand new concept for their "best of" compilation, which brings together the highlights from the label's success to date and packages them as the "Choice Cuts". Lo and behold there are such tasty morsels as Sato's dark, glistering bassline roller "Detroit Lies Bleeding", the insatiable snapping snares of "Clean Break" and fidgety finesse of "Voyager (feat. Baron Von Alias)" - both by Phobia - and the moody intrigue of Jubei's "The Path". It's a fine selection of tunes, which points to the fact that Ingredients is a very promising label indeed. Watch this space.

The Director - (6:09) Hot
Played by: Anodyne Industries
Review: Coming straight out of cookery school, Genotype earns himself a Michelin star with these two super classy cuts on Psylence's Ingredients imprint. "A Few Too Many" adds fidgeting, ticking breaks to an eerie, dark soundscape, full of ominous chimes and warping sci-fi SFX. The tune segues into the drop with a thick, treacly bassline, formidable subs and a stark, stripped back aesthetic. "The Director", another creeped out, minimal roller, reminiscent of a Renegade Hardware release, takes things to the darkside once again with pounding bass, razor sharp beats and morphing b-line. One for the heads.

Detroit Lies Bleeding (Phobia remix) - (5:38) 173 BPM Hot
Played by: Secret Society, Sato
Review: Sato first came onto our radar when he appeared on Med School's "New Blood 011" compilation earlier this year. Now he makes a welcome return on Psylence's Ingredients Recordings with a storming pair of tunes which blend understated cool with dancefloor panache. First up is title track "Glide", which has much of Sato's signature sound - punchy, in yer face drums and ominous atmospherics, coupled with grouchy b-line and detailed SFX. As if that wasn't enough, Phobia remixes the superb "Detroit Lies Bleeding" with its quasi political message, terse, tripping breaks, buzzing synthline and pervasive sense of danger, into an altogether darker beast. An excellent and truly satisfying release from Ingredients.

Review: Crafting four tracks from a bleak yet deeply enticing soundscape, Dub Phizix provides us with the next release on the ever-promising Ingredients imprint. First up, "Out There" introduces sci-fi SFX, harsh, almost tribal drum kicks in a haunting piece. "Athos" ups the ante with tense, prickly synths and aggressive bellows of bass, while "Breathe", one of the two digital exclusives, is a driving, bass wielding stepper that wouldn't sound out of place in a NFM set. "Inertia", the final clincher, has a similar experimental aesthetic to Rockwell, with clinking beats, cinematic samples and ticking hi-hats.

"Life Console" rattles away with psychedelic atmospheric sweeps and clattering breaks. Over on the flip, "Break From The Vacuum" takes things on a deeper tip with deep, murmuring b-line, soothing chiming keys and quirky SFX peppering an altogether cooler, calmer soundscape than the A side.

Realities - (6:50) 170 BPM
Review: The second release from the Mancunian D&B producer follows swiftly on from his debut 12" Stats/Riley on Ingredients UK earlier this year. Having caught the eye of such luminaries as D Bridge, Instra:mental, Loxy and Doc Scott, and tipped as a one to watch by ASC, it's fair to say that the future looks bright for Mode. "Warning" takes us deep into dark, dusky territory with squelchy, bellowing bass and an unnerving crackling breaking up the proceedings from time to time. "Realities", with its detached echoing vocal sample, takes us yet further down the rabbit hole. Beautifully composed, Mode makes as much use of space as he does of sound, providing a fresh and innovative take on the 170bpm genre.
