Review: Bobby Van Putten's The Planty Herbs project has been reveling in the edit world since 2010, although his output is frustratingly scattered for those who appreciate his tender touch. Now though you can revel in the splendour of a full 12-track album that truly shows what Putten is made of. From the mellow soul food of "Nothing Lasts" to the laidback hip hop funk of "Downgrade", the dusty house experiments of "Akustika" to the poppy overtones of "Follow Me Now," this is the sound of an artist with a rich musical gift and a soulful instinct.
Review: Marcel Vogel's Intimate Friends label welcomes a newcomer to the fold, with Hypoleon displaying a warm and inviting take on outboard, leftfield, electronic soul with a wavey edge to it. The vocals on the original tracks have a haunting edge to them thanks to some hefty processing, but the power in the delivery is undeniable. The tracks meanwhile channel acid, electro and minimal wave in understated ways, played out with a live band dynamic that hooks you in from the start. Jon McMillion's remix of "Tresberry" turns the track into a simmering 4/4 jam for the warm up heads to get loose to, while Tevo Howard brings some of his signature boxy acid to bear down on the track.
Review: It's been a while since we heard any new material from Rick Poppa Howard, the father of prodigious house talent Tevo Howard. The soul and raw, off-kilter production style runs in the family, and "Keep Holdin On" demonstrates this perfectly with its immediate warmth and unfussy arrangement. "Gimme That Love" is the real gem on this record though, toying with a rubbery bassline and a touch more atmospheric detail that makes Howards voice shine. That said, if you do require an instrumental version for any reason, the alternative cut stands proud on its own. For our money though, we'd say Howard's vocals are what makes this EP special.
Review: The Marcel Vogel-fronted label Intimate Friends has already done sterling work releasing deep house from the likes of Roman Rauch and Reginald Omas Mamode IV, and now it's Simba's turn to step up and strut his stuff. The Goodbye Miss Misanthropy EP is loaded with curveball house music of the highest order, with "Remind Me Of Dancing" particularly standing out thanks to Jyroscope's inspiring vocal turn. There's some off-kilter jazz moods tumbling out of "ITB Jam", while a fractured soul vibe gives "Love Letter" its power. "Last Time" is a honey-coated closer that rides on the laziest of grooves with some added sample power from a titan of RnB.
Review: Man of many labels Marcel Vogel turns out some of his most impressive material on Intimate Friends, bringing other talents into the fold to share in his vision of soul, funk, disco and house how it should be done. Having released the Human Beings album last year, Vogel invites a stellar cast to come and remix several tracks with predictably fantastic results. NY*AK enlists the honey-coated Rhodes skills of Mark Hand on their version of "Human Being", and it's an absolute joy to listen to. Meanwhile SoulPhiction gets into an equally heart-warming groove when he tackles "Always Isn't Only". Soul Clap meanwhile bring a little more party functionality to "Moonchild" before Simba offers up a very different, low-slung and laid back version.

Review: You will no doubt have spotted Marcel Vogel's handiwork steering the good ship Lumberjacks In Hell, or perhaps even his choice edits under the Em Vee banner, but increasingly the Dutch artist is turning to his own name to get some fine records laid down outside the realms of pure edit territory. This second outing on Intimate Friends comes on like a mini-album of sorts, with eight tracks made up of remixes as well as originals. It's a powerful step on for Vogel, touching on a grounded variation on neo-soul with a house kick in the rhythm department. Soulful vocal spots from Mey, Milos Gersi, Gianni Tam, Khadija and Tim Jules all add to the sensation, heading away from the dancefloor as an expansive EP for all time.
Review: Dave Aju, Alland Byallo, Kenneth Scott and Marc Smith joined together as KAMM, resulting in a mini-album called Kick Drunk Love for marcel Vogel's Amsterdam based label Intimate Friends.iDescribed in a press release as being influenced by the artists' "love of early '90s MoWax era laid-back beats," it features Barrite on lead vocals (with Byallo and Scott also contributing vocals), Smith on guitar, Byallo on trumpet and Scott on Moog synth. There's a couple guest appearances as well: Damian Schwartz plays some bass on "Sidewalks" and Eureka provides "a hell of a [vacuum] rev" on "Stage Left."
Review: Vienna's Roman Rauch has appeared previously on Endless Flight, Philpot and Tenderpark thus far. Not bad going for someone that's only been on the scene a few years. This new one is on Amsterdam's Intimate Friends, run by the legendary Marcel Vogel no less. "Essig Jazz" is a dusty, slo-mo, urban favoured house jam that would appeal to Three Chairs fans as it would Max Graef of Glenn Astro. Speaking of which; who better to get in for a remix than the latter. Astro's take is equally as dusty (of course!) but more upbeat and with uplifting piano stabs and hip-hop samples... Overall it's the hip-hop style which makes it; but wait 'til that wacky synth solo comes rushing in! "Got To Be" featuring the sweet slam poetry of Caits Meissner keeps the rough and urban aesthetic intact while "Slowswing" is a gorgeous deep house workout with swirling Rhodes piano and sweet strings atop of female vocal samples.
Review: After issuing a mini-album from Reginald Omas Mamode IV, one of the talented members of London's Deenmamode clan, Marcel Vogel's Intimate Friends label looks closer to home for their latest release. According to the label, Dikkens is a beautiful soul from Rotterdam who is combining different heartfelt emotions in one wonderful record glued together by a tremendous subbass. Whilst we haven't seen any pictures of Dikkens, the latter aspect of that statement certainly rings true on Retrospect Of A Mind, with four cuts of deeply atmospheric house that come with that classic Dutch flavour. Tip!
Review: Reginald Omas Mamode IV is a beautiful soulful human being hailing from the british capital London. He creates wonderful music with the around his distinct voice. I remember telling my friends about the first EP on five easy pieces and urging them to buy it. So glad he found his way over to Amsterdam as well. Very pleased to present this soulful dreamy collage. -Marcel Vogel, Intimate Friends.
