Review: IRMA are among the longest-running labels in the game - there was a time, in the early 90s, when this writer would buy any vinyl bearing their logo without even hearing it first - but they've excelled even their own high standards with this superb collection, which embraces a range of jazz- and funk-informed styles and is programmed to perfection. The album starts out in dancefloor-friendly jazz-funk territory, gets closer and closer to straight-up jazz and jazz-fusion in the mid-section, then ventures into slightly more experimental and/or electronic pastures as it nears its close. The quality meter's in the red throughout, making picking standouts almost redundant, but if pushed then opener 'P-Lainz' and Papik & Fly Bruna's 'Don't Ever Let It Go' are particularly deserving of your attention.

Don't Let The System Get You Down - (7:33) 109 BPM Hot
Deeper - (7:37) 118 BPM
Review: Luca LTJ Trevisi is an Italian scene veteran whose career dates back to the 80s, when he was in at the start of the country's house and acid jazz scenes. He's long been associated with the IRMA label and here fellow label regular Pomante mucks in to help him rework a couple of back catalogue nuggets, 'Don't Let You Down' from 2015 and 'Deeper' from 2019. The former is a mid-paced contemporary funk groover with a heavyweight b-line and parping sax, while 'Deeper' has a slightly housier feel, but either should slot into those modern funk and soul sets nicely.

Review: Like its predecessor, 'Urban Grooves 2' takes a deep dive into the vast vaults of IRMA Records, resurfacing with a 30-track set of "urban funk breaks dub hip-hop beats". In practice, that means a mix of head-nodding, slow-motion disco-funk (see the various contributions by hypno-disco king LTJ Xperience), rubbery jazz-funk-goes-dub disco workouts (Vito Lalinga), toe-tapping, sample-heavy instrumental hip-hop (Ice One), Latin-flecked downtempo grooves (Lo Greco Bros and Flow Bop), sumptuous neo-soul (Orange Factory), and wah-wah guitar sporting deep funk (The Smoke Orchestra). Equal parts club-ready and sofa-friendly, 'Urban Grooves 2' is a uniformly entertaining and life-affirming compilation.

Before You Know It - (3:35) 100 BPM Hot
Review: Luca Travesi AKA LTJ Xperience's DJ and production career dates back to the mid-80s - and it shows, as he serves up a very convincing two-track contemporary funk slab for legendary Italian label IRMA. 'Feeling Better' with its dense, bottom-heavy layers of sound and indecipherable, sampled n' looped female vocal ("get funky with ya"?) sounds like the hottest, steamiest sex you ever had pressed up onto vinyl, and will absolutely slay the more specialist floors, while 'Before You Know It' leans more to the soul side and as such may have broader appeal, even if it doesn't have quite the same sultry charm as the title track. Great release from a great label.

Review: Some years back, Laurent Garnier's F Communications label released a series of compilations under the title "Megasoft Office". These gathered together deep, groovy and downtempo cuts that made an excellent musical accompaniment to your working day. Irma's latest collection, "Work With Balearic Music", takes a similar approach. Wisely, the storied label group has dipped into their archive of original Balearic-era Italian productions, offering up dream house classics and rarities from the likes of Keys & Tronics Ensemble, Montego Bay, Belladonna, Don Carlos, Notenshun and Soft House Company. Throw in some jazzy downtempo grooves and a handful of recent productions and you have an expansive, on-point set rich in classic cuts.

Review: Luca Trevisi is LTJ Xperience, an Italian producer who began his career in the 1980s. As resident DJ at two of the most famous Italian clubs of the time: Kinky in Bologna and Cap Creus in Imola, he was one of the first Italian jocks to spin house and to reintroduce black music, jazz and latin-bossa classics from the '70s. These are the kind of tracks that gave birth to the acid jazz and rare groove movements. The Beggar Groove LP is his new album, the fourth dedicated to the 'research' of disco/funk, from its origins to today's rhythms feelings on the dancefloor. The smooth acid jazz of the opening track "Way Down" would make even Ludovic Navarre stand up and notice, while soulful and compelling deep funk of "Fooling You" can equally impress. According to the label, the title track of the album is the most demand track by the artist and never released digitally until now.

Review: Italy's Giuseppe Milici began his musical life as a hired jazz gun (harmonica actually). He did TV shows in his homeland before branching out into classical in 1998. The past two decades have seen him become an international star and now he returns with his latest long player, The Look Of Love. As the title suggests, this is a collection of modern classics reworked in the smooth, jazzy Milici style. Highlights of the 15 tracks featured include the loungey jive of "I Will Survive", the playful "Singin' In The Rain" and the Latin tinged rendition of Stevie's "Isn't She Lovely".

Review: Bologna based legend Luca Trevisi aka LTJ Xperience has been spinning around Italy since the '80s so we were convinced he knew his stuff already, but this album is truly testament to his years and knowledge. He re-edits a bunch of classic soul jams spanning, funk soul, disco and rare groove on a collection which is pure fire and a worthy addition to any DJs arsenal. The smooth groove of "Slow Fire" is the kind of thing Psychemagik could have got to first, while "You Will Know" and "Black Machine" sample some of the very best in the form of Gypsy Kings and Prince, respectively. There's a lot to get through, but it's all killer, no filler!

Review: Italian musician Papik certainly believes in 'amore speciale', recruiting none other than his own wife to luxuriously breathe her vocals all over this jazzy poolside breezer, "Special Love". The song is culled from his recent double album Sounds For The Open Road, which boasts two CDs - a soulful one and a jazzy one (the mellow Fender Rhodes chords all over this tune tie it firmly to the latter). Remix-wise we get drivin' housey funk from Submantra, deep, downbeat glitchy vibes from From P60 and trumpet-led, sun bleached bossa-house from Sounds Of Soul.

Here with the help of famous Italian label Irma he revisits his jazzy roots with the help of a whole host of pros including Romina Johnson, Charlie Cannon and Carlo Bianci. The LP, produced by Masciarelli and Carlos Sarmiento, features 10 tracks including a sizzling rendition of "On Broadway" - all played with dazzling aplomb by his muso gang, but ultimately the show is all about Piero's slick, peerless guitar chops.

Downtown (feat Mara J Boston) - (7:39) 118 BPM
Traxx - (6:56) 125 BPM Hot
Review: Switching a slick sonic flip from his previous output, Italian house maestro Faz opens this neat doublet with a sexy slo-mo groove. Smouldering with demonstrative command, and peppered with stirring vocals from Mara J Boston, it's one of those cuts that will work perfectly during any warm-up or daytime sets, but also submerge an entire club at peaktime when dropped with the right creativity. "Traxx", meanwhile, references one of the most classic house sermons of a bubbling, bouncy bassline and thick, chop-slapping beats. Showcasing a great range and a clear understanding of house music fundamentals, Faz is on fire right now.

Review: With a name like Deep 4 Life, it's easy to be misled. However this Italian trio (including Fabrizio Del Re and Teo Lentini) don't just make generic deep for deep's sake productions. Nope, these tunes are anything but boring - both songs here have a crystalline quality. "Dark Room" has a breezy proggy strut with a slightly retro '90s vibe, and our favourite, the quirky "Feel It", has a cheeky Europop feel. In short, they prove that deep can be fun!

Beginning with the deep and housey "Channel 3", the album encounters noir-ish smoky nightclub trumpets ("Miss Cat"), shimmering piano led pieces ("Silence") and even electro-funk ("Mojo Drums"). Here though we have ten original tracks by D'andy that all follow a laid-back trip-hop/broken beat-ish direction. "Smoking Room" is all deep beats, jazzy trumpets and soulful vocals, elsewhere "Bembe" is soft jazz-funk over a samba beat and "Moltosugo" even veers into acid jazz territory.

Review: Having found success blending chopped-up disco and soul cuts with head-nodding house rhythms, Luca Trevisi is in no rush the flip the script. Then again, why should he be? As this second collection of shuffling disco/soul/house blends proves, nobody else does head-nodding slo-mo and midtempo groovery quite as well. Ain't Nothing But A Groove offers few surprises, but a whole heap of excellent, floor-friendly productions (some, such as the brilliant "Get Down", which have previously been released as singles). While the balance between disco, funk, soul and house changes throughout - the jazzy "Vuonto Beat", for example, is almost a straight-up murky deep house cut - Trevisi's wonderful way with grooves constantly impresses.

Review: Typically poetic Italian collective Lunare Project 'select and merge styles from different worlds' at sophisticated early evening events (usually on yachts). Don't call them DJs though; they insist they are simply a group of guys who are 'just a little crazy'. This LP sees the guys launch a new compilation series that pays tribute to certain experiences they've had, this one inspired by a certain party held at Grand Hotel Santa Lucia. Included are tracks by fellow lunatics including the elastic funk of Crazy Penis, the jazzy broken beat of Max Sedgley and the velvety synth work of Santorini.

Review: Seriously deep and jazzy goodness runs through this full LP from Belladonna, with the gorgeously languid opener "Natural World" setting the tone perfectly - mostly instrumental, chilled and full of exotic instrumentation. Whether flitting between ethno-funk on "Harmony" or techno on "Dreamer", Belladonna makes this a hugely absorbing and rounded set, with the star-scraping minimal rush of "Vienna" definitely proving a highlight.
