Review: Featurecast's Shout It Out LP came out one year ago almost to the day, so it was a surprise when this nifty remix compilation landed on our charts this morning! But, this is dance music, and the only rule is that there are no rules. Funnily enough, this is a rule that runs true even in terms of the sounds put together right here, and there's a few too many of them for us to categorise the EP under one genre banner. To give you a taste of the content, Ahee's remix of "Move" is a cut-up technoid bullet with gnarly injections of menacing wobble bass, whereas Inapt's grizzly take on "999" gives the term 'bassline house' an innovative new meaning, and Dub:ra's version of "Take It Down" steps into the darker and more unexpected world of electro-house, served up through a contemporary EDM filter.

Review: Dutch boogie house champs Kraak & Smaak knocked it outta the park last year with their Juicy fruit long player. Now they're putting out remixes of these two album cuts. "Stumble" is a sadness-tinged piano lament with soft, happy-sad summer day vibes. The Fhin Flip version retains Parcel's soulful vocals but adds slow, tough beats and low end rumbles. Elsewhere Richard Dorfmeister appears and delivers a spectacular "Cinematic Way" version and Blue Motel turn in a dreamy stonewashed synth rework. "So Clear" meanwhile is hazy deep house (Imagine a stoned Gypsy Woman) that gets remixed in an off-kilter funk direction by Memem.

Review: A Geordie soul act that tell it like it is, Smoove & Turrell, recently dropped fourth album, Crown Posada, to much acclaim. This was largely due to its thrilling combo of vintage style soul and funk. There were many highlights on the LP and now, as a victory lap, we get the deliciously funky, Chic-influenced disco boogie of "No Point In Trying" as another single. If ever there was and advert for the album it's this slinky-hipped rousing anthem.

Review: Kraak & Smaak's recent album, Juicy Fruit, was packed with warm, loose and attractive blends of boogie, jazz-funk and soul-soaked disco. "Alone With You", a heartfelt stroll through soft-focus boogie pastures in the company of expressive vocalist Cleopold, was undoubtedly one of the highlights. Here it gets a deserved single release, accompanied by three new reworks. Purple Disco Machine steals the show with a version that deftly melds the Dutch outfit's original disco instrumentation to a tasty house groove and atmospheric nu-disco synths. However unlike many a fellow Bristolian, these guys don't produce bone-rattling bass productions, instead they opt for the 'feel-good, energetic ear candy' of mashed-up funk, soul, disco and breaks. Their album, As We Do Our Thing, is out now, and here we have two tracks culled from it. First up, "Love's Supposed To Be" fuses twangy, Fatboy Slim/Wiseguys-style '90s big beat with a soaring soul vocal, whilst on the digital flipside the album's title track is all about loose '60s R&B/soul loops - pure party (guilty) pleasures!

Review: Sizzlingly hot UK label Jalepeno's latest signing is Brighton based producer-slash-intelligent-sound-designer, Asta Hiroki. The Balance EP is Hiroki's debut effort and features four tracks heavily indebted to Teebs, James Blake and Flying Lotus. Two tracks features the silky vocals of Kathrin deBoer (Tru Thoughts) - the sensuously orchestrated acoustic-lead "Her Image In Focus" and the loose and loungey "Hold Tight". Elsewhere we get the 90s-style hazily broken dub-out "Beatrice" and the ethereal loops of the almost vanished "Most & Least". Quality stuff.
