Review: It's been slowly drip-fed to us over a 10-month period but now here at last is the full album. On 'Something Like That', Jalapeno bosses Skeewiff celebrate 25 years in the game by paying tribute to some of the music that's inspired them, delivering generally very faithful but also very accomplished reworks of classic tracks by artists ranging from The Winstons and Jimmy Smith to Dick Dale and Herb Alpert. New additions to the roster on this final version include Nancy Sinatra's 'These Boots Are Made For Walking', Muppets 'Mah Na Mah Na', Mel Tormé's Mod club standard 'Coming Home Baby' and, just to prove they're not taking themselves TOO seriously, Boots Randolph's 'Yakety Sax' - better known to most as the 'Benny Hill' theme.

Review: Back once again with the rework masters, as Jalapeno bosses Skeewiff drop the latest instalment in a series of covers/re-edits/homages that's been released in dribs and drabs over the past nine months. The new addition this time out is their take on 1954 Dean Martin classic 'Sway', though if our ears don't deceive us - bearing in mind that there are at least 67 different recordings of the song! - it's actually the 1959 Rosemary Clooney version that's referenced here. Elsewhere on the EP, their takes on lounge classics from The Winstons, Herb Alpert, Dick Dale, Jimmy Smith, Keith Mansfield and The Young Holt Trio return.

Review: Jalapeno bring us their latest V/A collection rounding up the cream of the label's recent releases. The line-up features all the usual suspects (The Allergies, Ivo FitzRoy, Flevans, Smoove & Turrell and label bosses Skeewiff) as well as a handful of newer names, and if you're a fan of the label's trademark blend of funk, soul, breaks and hip-hop - with the emphasis this time out firmly on the soul side - then it's hard to see how you'd end up dissatisfied here. Standouts for yours truly include Wolfgang Valbrun's 'Cyclone', with its big, cavernous production redolent of 60s/northern soul, and Mr Doris & D-Funk's rapped homage to UK childhood 'Back In The Day', but you'll doubtless find your own favourites...

Review: Not quite sure what's going on but Jalapeno are now seemingly halfway to releasing a new LP from label bosses Skeewiff incrementally, with one extra new track appearing on each consecutive release! There's not much we can tell you about their takes on 'Misirlou','Amen Brother', 'Little Spanish Flea', 'Exclusive Blend' or 'The Cat' that we haven't told you before, then, so let's focus this time around on new arrival 'Wack Wack', which was originally a crazy jazz workout recorded by The Young Holt Trio (AKA Young-Holt Unlimited) in 1966 - and which will inspire the cutting of numerous rugs for sure.

Review: The UK soul faves serve up what is, if we're counting correctly, their seventh studio album. That being the case, and especially as several of the featured cuts have recently had trailer single releases, you should have a pretty good idea what to expect already, and it's fair to say you're unlikely to be disappointed: the boys from the UK's northeast worked out their distinctive soul-funk-jazz-pop groove years ago and they're sticking to it here, thank you very much! 'Joy!' provides the album's most uptempo moment while 'Empty Bottle Serendade' finds it at its most downtempo and contemplative.

Review: Definitely one from the cheeky side, this, as Skeewiff serves up five fresh takes on some very well-known tunes from days gone by. Whether you actually require new versions of Dick Dale's 'Misirlou' (as made famous by 'Pulp Fiction'), Herb Alpert's 'Little Spanish Flea' or The Winstons' 'Amen Brother' is something only you can decide, but there are Friday night floors out there that'll lap 'em up for sure. It's the brace of slightly less obvious choices that stand out, though - Keith Mansfield's kitsch classic 'Exclusive Blend' and Jimmy Smith's 'The Cat', the latter a good place to send anyone who asks "What does 'wigged-out Hammonds' mean?"!

Review: Jalapeno bosses Skeewiff have long been known for their love of all things jazzy, lounge-y and library music-ish, but seldom have they worn that heart so brazenly on their sleeves as they do with this EP, which packs four covers of easy listening classics. Dick Dale's 'Misirlou' many people will know from the 'Pulp Fiction' soundtrack, while The Winstons' 'Amen Brother' gave the world the Amen break; add to those Herb Alpert's 'Spanish Flea' and Keith Mansfield's 'Exclusive Blend', all respectfully but unashamedly reinvented in signature Skeewiff style, and you've got a surefire recipe for some unpretentious dancefloor fun 'n' frolics.

Review: If we've counted correctly then this is the fifth long-player from Jalapeno regular Nigel Evans, AKA Flevans. As such, fans should have a pretty good idea what to expect already, and while this album may not serve up much in the way of surprises, it's fair to say they're unlikely to be disappointed, as the Brighton-based producer serves up 12 tracks that blend funk, soul, jazz, downtempo and hip-hop influences into 42 minutes of very pleasant listening. If it's floor-burners you're after, start with 'Parasol' or the irresistibly infectious 'I Got Soul', though the standouts for yours truly are actually 'Digits' (check that jazz-funk geetar) and 'For A While' (always been a sucker for a chipmunk'd vocal).

Review: The 'Jalapeno Funk' series reaches its 12th installment. The title's arguably something of a misnomer, because the 20 tracks here are largely closer to Dap Kings-style neo-soul - with, in true Jalapeno style, a side order of hip-hop - than they are to phat-assed 70s funk. But look at the names involved: with the likes of Smoove & Turrell, The Allergies, Skeewiff, Dr Rubberfunk, Ivo Fitzroy and Aldo Vanucci all onboard, you know fans of the label and/or the style are going to be more than satisfied with this one! Soopasoul's jazz-tinged 'A Wild Mad Beat' is one standout for this reviewer, while Skeewiff's 'Man Of Constant Sorrow' is worth a mention for its distinctive use of a country/bluegrass-style male vocal.

Talk About Nothing (Smoove Tripped Out dub mix) - (4:05) 89 BPM
Review: Smoove & Turrell's sixth studio album continues to get the royal treatment with a new dose of remixes, this time coming from band member Jonathan Scott Watson's solo project, Smoove. Turning out ten new and previously unheard versions of Stratos Bleu, Smoove embraces dubs of all sounds and sizes. Looking to something trance-like in "Still Don't Know" with its turn-of-the-millenium house vocal - next to "Talk About Nothing" - get some neo-soul and gospel vibes in "Elgin Towers", to a chunky and Balearic instrumental in "Never Wanted You More". "Fade Away" adds an extra breath of fresh air to its vocal section and broken beat rhythm structure, with some summery and upbeat grooves that hit the floor running in an 'Acid Dub' to "This Time". Smoove operator.

Review: Keeping it dusty, beatdown, looped up and moody blue is Asta Hiroki's Entropy album on Jalapeno. Taking in jazz drums, MPC programming, dusty vinyl crackles-and-pops to other classical and acoustic elements - like the harpsichords in its title-track - Entropy is a most alluring, emotional listen. With a sound that lands somewhere between Pantha Du Prince, DJ Shadow and Burial jamming in a jazz cafe/piano bar, get your kicks through classy finger percussion in tracks like "Dahlias" to '90s esque broken beat instrumentals in "Cherry Blossom" - tis the season. Post-dubstep percussion and mirrored synths make their way into tracks like "Butterfly House" next to some broken down hip hop and blues too in "Rose-tint". Entropy never felt so warm.

Skeewiff - "Soul Bossanova" (7" edit) - (3:25) 80 BPM
Review: We're full of respect for the team behind Jalapeno Records, who have now been offering up the finest in funk, soul, hip-hop, disco and breakbeat for 20 years. It's a landmark that calls for a celebration, and with this compilation they've certainly marked their anniversary in style. The 20-track set is full-to-bursting with party-starting heat, with vintage gems from the likes of Skeewiff, Ikon, Kraak & Smaak and Featurecast being joined by more recent highlights from current imprint heavyweights such as Smoove & Turrell and the Allergies. Highlights are plentiful, with our picks including the break-driven revivalist soul headiness of Aldo Vanucci's 'You're All Show', the summery positivity of Gizelle Smith's 'S.T.A.Y' and the rushing disco brilliance of Dimitri From Paris's essential edit of Izo Fitzroy's 'I Want Magic'.

Talk About Nothing (Krash Slaughta remix) - (4:46) 89 BPM
Review: Given the vibrancy, instrumental colour and musical richness of Smoove & Turrell's recent Stratos Bleu album, it should come as no surprise to find that this partner remix album is every bit as good. There are some suitably sizable, club-ready takes scattered across the set, with our picks including Ashley Beedle's piano and strings-laden disco revision of 'It Ain't Working', Ray Mang's slap-bass-sporting disco-boogie overhaul of 'Do It', Smoove's proto-house style 'Club Dub' of 'It Ain't Working', and a couple of excellent deep house re-rubs by Vandebilt and Fouk. Elsewhere, Steve Cobby's stirring remix of 'Elgin Towers' is a blue-eyed soul treat, Krash Slaughta successfully re-wires 'TalkAbout Nothing' as a shuffling drum and bass workout, and Dr Rubberfunk's take on 'Never Wanted You More' is a jazzy trip-hop treat.

I Just Got That Feeling (feat Andy Cooper) - (4:24) 88 BPM
Review: Formed in 2012, Bristol duo The Allergies have spent the past eight years crafting a signature style that's like the missing link between Stereo MCs and The Dap Kings. This, their third studio long-player, doesn't throw up any huge surprises - yet again they float effortlessly from party-style hip-hop and funk breaks to effective 'new old' funk and northern soul pastiche - but is notable for its range of guest vocalists, who include Dynamite MC, The Cuban Brothers (on Latin excursion 'Let Them Know') and veteran Ugly Duckling rapper Andy Cooper, not to mention Bristol's own most notorious busker, Mr Woodnote. The Ike & Tina vibes of 'Every Trick In The Book' and the fast-n-furious 'I'm On It' (feat Dr Syntax) are among the highlights.

Talk About Nothing - (4:04) 89 BPM
Review: Album number six here from the northeast of England's finest neo-soul combo Smoove & Turrell. Coming like all five of its predecessors on the mighty Jalapeno Records, 'Stratos Bleu' sees the Gateshead gang exploring a slightly wider range of musical territory: 'This Time', for instance, operates at a soulful house tempo, while 'E.P.' has an almost Underworld-ish, indie-dance kinda feel. Synths n' samples play a more prominent role than on previous albums, too - though John Turrell's distinctive tonsils remain front and centre at all times, so existing fans needn't worry too much!

Review: "A unique and captivating blend of soul, gospel and blues" is how UK vocalist Izo Fitzroy's biography describes her music... but then you probably knew that, because there's been no escaping recent single 'Blind Faith', which sees her Winehouse-like vocals backed, just like the lady herself, by the excellent Haggis Horns, as well as her own Soul Sanctuary Gospel Choir. And if you liked the single you're gonna love the album, because there's plenty more where 'Blind Faith' came from! It's largely a home listening affair, though the acid jazz-leaning 'Pushing Buttons' and the disco-infused, Hammond-laden 'I Want Magic' could find themselves gracing funk and soul floors.

Happily, though, that's about the only grumble you're likely to have with this, his fourth long-player, on which he demonstrates an impressive musical versatility as he deftly weaves between raw 70s-inspired soul (see the Stephanie Whitelock and Izo Fitz-Roy collabs), mellifluous virtuoso jazz-funk (see 'Slim's Mood' and 'Steppin' In', hazy, blues-y psychedelic funk-rock ('Boom!' feat John Turrell), scorching Hammond grooves ('Pressure Cooker') and more besides. Steppin' In - (4:55) 88 BPM Hot
Review: Jalapeno bring us the latest salvo from London producer Dr Rubberfunk, and it's very much the proverbial game of two halves. Featuring John Turrell (of Smoove & Turrell fame) on mic duties, 'Boom!' is a raw rock n' soul jam, roughly in the vein of Sly & The Family Stone, War or mid-70s Ike & Tina Turner, with a singalong-friendly "it's just a little blow-out" vocal and some exemplary six-string screechin'. But good as 'Boom!' is, it's 'Steppin' In' that's the killer here, a five-minute, organ-laden jazz-fusion workout that could well be the good doctor's finest moment to date.

Review: Jalapeno have long been reliable providers of 21st Century funk and soul, and this third album from Plymouth's Aldo Vanucci doesn't disappoint. There's no post-breakbeat filter here: the 12 tracks featured instead work on the principle that if you want to pay homage to musical days gone by, you should do so as faithfully as possible. Vanucci's eclectic approach and an array of guest vocalists of both sexes ensure that things never get too predictable, though, with tracks like 'Ponderosa' (feat Dena Deadly) bringing the Winehouse vibes, 'Get A Hold On This' (feat Kyle Audist) rocking the country-funk and 'Spell It Out' (feat QNC) playing us out on a smoked-out hip-hop note.

The sax-led 'Canvas Cathedral' (feat Ben Castle) is up first, underpinning a melodic topline that veers close to muzak territory with beats which owe more to lo-fi hip-hop, making for a track that'll appeal to b-boys, funkateers and coffee shop yummy mummies alike. 'A Little Blahzay' (feat Izo FitzRoy) then offers a complete change of pace, channelling 90s/00s R&B and neo-soul ? la D'Angelo, Erykah Badu et al. 'Big Bad Woman' is a different kettle of fish, having something of a mod jazz vibe to its shuffling drums, boogie-woogie piano and wigged-out 60s organ flurries, all of which are topped by a full-lunged but uncredited female vocal announcing "I'm a big bad woman and I'll eat you alive". Crazy, daddio!

Review: UK funk and jazz band, Smoove + Turrell, are back on the unstoppable Jalapeno Records with their fifth studio album for the label, making them the imprint's star residents. No doubt as to that. Alongside the deluge of albums that they've released for Jalapeno, the outfit have dropped countless singles, each one of them showcasing one strand of funk and soul. Mount Pleasant is an undeniably festive collection of tunes, primed and ready for the summer months, full of zest and life for the dancers. The main ingredient is funk and jazz, but the power behind this memorable LP is the band's pop sensibility, coming through in everything from the vocals to the arrangements, creating a selection of tunes that are instantly memorable and painfully hummable. Is this the rise of the underground coming through above the line? Only time will tell, but we think these guys are the real deal.

Review: Gizelle Smith is one of the most underrated soul musicians out there at the moment. For any artist who is almost single-handedly keeping the soul and funk tradition alive, she should be front-of-mind for all diggers and lovers of the genres; instead, it seems much easier for people to look at the past. In any case, Ruthless Day is her second studio album, and it really is a refreshing 11 tracks of soulful pop music from the bottom of her heart. Honest and uncompromising, Smith's care-free stnce of current trends and hype-chatter makes this album an important one in 2018, and one that will undoubtedly be referenced in the years to come. If anything, it is FUNKY AS HELL!

Kraak & Smaak - "Breakdown Suite" - (4:34) 89 BPM
Review: The Jalapeno Chilli series are coming out left, right and centre, leading us to think that these mad peeps have access to a bottomless pit of bouncy edits, ready and armed for the dancefloor. Much like the previous chapter, Volume 3 of the series features endless blends of boogie-flavoured dance anthems that know how to bring the FUNK on over to the ballroom. The likes of Lindo Man, Parker, Ambassadeurs, Kraak & Smaak, and the whole rest of the crew deliver some fine-ass party vibes that sure as hell know how to break those beats.
