Review: Good news for all UK soul fans: there's a new Smoove & Turrell album called 'Red Ellen' coming soon. But it's not actually out until the end of October, so in the meantime you'll have to make do with this four-track taster EP. A couple of the cuts here - 'The Light' feat Ronnie Foster and 'IGOTCHA' - featured on a two-track release back in July, so of more interest today are the mid-paced, contemplative 'Echoes' and the considerably more upbeat 'Joy!'. The latter is as synth-y as this writer can remember any S&T track ever getting, and it all bodes well for the forthcoming long-player for sure.

Review: Mr Doris is an eclectic soul, as happy laying down jazz sets as he is working with reggae giant Sizzla or spinning house and disco for Defected in Ibiza. Here he teams up once more like-minded Sydney-based Brit D-Funk on a hip-hop-infused jam featuring Cantaloop that's served up in a choice of three mixes, with Krafty Kuts bringing the funk-breaks vibes, Thatmanmonkz dragging the track onto broader-minded house floors and George Solar giving it a dubbier makeover. Completing the package is the light-hearted 'Back In The Day', with West London rapper MysDiggi name-checking Thundercats, Bananaman, The A-Team, Grange Hill, SuperTed and Byker Grove.

Review: Jalapeno bring us their latest V/A collection rounding up the cream of the label's recent releases. The line-up features all the usual suspects (The Allergies, Ivo FitzRoy, Flevans, Smoove & Turrell and label bosses Skeewiff) as well as a handful of newer names, and if you're a fan of the label's trademark blend of funk, soul, breaks and hip-hop - with the emphasis this time out firmly on the soul side - then it's hard to see how you'd end up dissatisfied here. Standouts for yours truly include Wolfgang Valbrun's 'Cyclone', with its big, cavernous production redolent of 60s/northern soul, and Mr Doris & D-Funk's rapped homage to UK childhood 'Back In The Day', but you'll doubtless find your own favourites...

Ponderosa/Knew You Were Coming
Ponderosa (feat Dena Deadly) - (4:34) 122 BPM Hot
Knew You Were Coming (7" edit) - (3:51) 62 BPM
Review: Two distinctly contrasting funk/soul numbers make up this latest EP from the mighty Jalapeno camp. 'Knew You Were Coming' is a foot-stompin' funker ? la Fatback, laden with wukka-wukking guitars and topped with a proclaimin' male vocal whose chorus, oddly, this writer remembers from Ultra Boogie's 1994 house/garage cut 'Head On', so Lord alone knows what's going on there! Meanwhile, 'Ponderosa' takes us into much smoother soul territory - though don't worry, it's still pacey enough for dancefloor play - and features a full-lunged vocal from Dena Deadly, an LA-based singer borrowed from the band Memoir.

Review: "A unique and captivating blend of soul, gospel and blues" is how UK vocalist Izo Fitzroy's biography describes her music... but then you probably knew that, because there's been no escaping recent single 'Blind Faith', which sees her Winehouse-like vocals backed, just like the lady herself, by the excellent Haggis Horns, as well as her own Soul Sanctuary Gospel Choir. And if you liked the single you're gonna love the album, because there's plenty more where 'Blind Faith' came from! It's largely a home listening affair, though the acid jazz-leaning 'Pushing Buttons' and the disco-infused, Hammond-laden 'I Want Magic' could find themselves gracing funk and soul floors.

Review: Dutch boogie masters Kraak & Smaak mark two whole decades in the game this year, and to celebrate the occasion, Jalapeno bring us this best-of selection culled from releases both on Jalapeno and on their own Boogie Angst imprint. Kraak & Smaak have always neatly walked the line between straight-up funk, disco and boogie on the one hand, and more pop-oriented productions on the other, and so it is here: the first half of the album is packed with 'new old' funk and soul gems like 'Danse Macabre' and 'I Don't Know', while the second half concentrates largely on the more commercial side of their oeuvre, not to mention their collaborations with a wide array of guest vocalists. Fans will have most of what's here already, of course, but it's a fitting tribute to an impressive career to date - long may it continue.

The Light
The Light (feat Ronnie Foster) - (4:26) 120 BPM Hot
IGOTCHA - (4:36) 117 BPM
Review: Two brand new cuts here from the northeast UK's finest purveyors of 'new old' funk and soul. 'The Light' features Blue Note legend Ronnie Foster on keyboards and is an uplifting and supremely funky cut that John Turrell describes as a reaction to "the last three years on this lonely island... rise above it and let the love shine in!" The accompanying 'I Gotcha', meanwhile, is a slightly more lilting and laidback affair that nevertheless exhorts us to "feel that music, rock that rhythm, dance until you can't sit down". Just the tonic if you're in need of some positive soulful vibes right now.

Review: Smoove & Turrell's sixth studio album continues to get the royal treatment with a new dose of remixes, this time coming from band member Jonathan Scott Watson's solo project, Smoove. Turning out ten new and previously unheard versions of Stratos Bleu, Smoove embraces dubs of all sounds and sizes. Looking to something trance-like in "Still Don't Know" with its turn-of-the-millenium house vocal - next to "Talk About Nothing" - get some neo-soul and gospel vibes in "Elgin Towers", to a chunky and Balearic instrumental in "Never Wanted You More". "Fade Away" adds an extra breath of fresh air to its vocal section and broken beat rhythm structure, with some summery and upbeat grooves that hit the floor running in an 'Acid Dub' to "This Time". Smoove operator.

Review: It's been 14 years since Simon Ward AKA Dr Rubberfunk released his second album 'My Life At 33', so something doesn't quite add up there! Happily, though, that's about the only grumble you're likely to have with this, his fourth long-player, on which he demonstrates an impressive musical versatility as he deftly weaves between raw 70s-inspired soul (see the Stephanie Whitelock and Izo Fitz-Roy collabs), mellifluous virtuoso jazz-funk (see 'Slim's Mood' and 'Steppin' In', hazy, blues-y psychedelic funk-rock ('Boom!' feat John Turrell), scorching Hammond grooves ('Pressure Cooker') and more besides. "Not a real doctor since 1992," Ward's website proclaims proudly - and long may it continue.

Review: Keeping it dusty, beatdown, looped up and moody blue is Asta Hiroki's Entropy album on Jalapeno. Taking in jazz drums, MPC programming, dusty vinyl crackles-and-pops to other classical and acoustic elements - like the harpsichords in its title-track - Entropy is a most alluring, emotional listen. With a sound that lands somewhere between Pantha Du Prince, DJ Shadow and Burial jamming in a jazz cafe/piano bar, get your kicks through classy finger percussion in tracks like "Dahlias" to '90s esque broken beat instrumentals in "Cherry Blossom" - tis the season. Post-dubstep percussion and mirrored synths make their way into tracks like "Butterfly House" next to some broken down hip hop and blues too in "Rose-tint". Entropy never felt so warm.

Review: Brighton-based DJ, producer and multi-instrumentalist Flevans (known as Nigel Evans in real life) has been steadily turning out funk- and soul-inspired beats, breaks n' grooves for the past 20 years, working mostly on the Tru Thoughts and Jalapeno labels. Here, he returns to the latter stable clutching three new tracks: 'Starting Points' is quite overtly disco-fied by Flevans' standards, 'Biznizz' is a little bit more down n' dirty but still upbeat, while the stripped n' looped 'I Wanted You To Stay' is the housiest of the three and wouldn't actually have sounded out of place on a 'Disco Kandi' compilation.

Review: Funk and soul act Smoove & Turrell have worked closely with the UK label Jalape?o over the past decade - and the latest phase of this collaboration is a killer remix release. Valique is tasked with reworking "You're Gone", and turns it into a sassy house workout, replete with the original track's brass and sexy vocals. The Allergies, another mainstay on Jalape?o take a shot at the same track, and deploy break beats to great effect, using them as a backdrop for Izo FitzRoy's soulful tones. Last but by no means least, Flevans, aka Nigel Evans delivers a wonderful rare groove version of "Billie".

Review: The Bristolian duo of DJ Moneyshot and Rackabeat return with a four-track EP on their regular home of Jalapeno Records. 'Keep It Moving' itself is up first, placing a full rap vocal atop a single, looping soul sample, making it arguably one more for the hip-hoppers than the funkateers. But more organic funk pleasures can be found on the rambunctious, party-starting 'When The Heat Comes Down' and Smoove's Acid Jazz-leaning remix of 'Run It Back', both of which feature The Allergies' trademark fast flow in full effect, while female-vocalled closer 'Entitled To That' sees a change in pace and will satisfy those in search of some raw soul grooves.

It's full to bursting with dancefloor hits plucked from their sizable catalogue, as well as fan favourites that inspire rapturous responses when performed live. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, from the high-octane thrills of "I'm A Man" and funk-rock fizz of "You Could've Been a Lady", to the Hammond-heavy stomp of "I Can't Give You Up" and the Motown style Northern Soul rush of "Lay It On Me". It's also nice to get another chance to wallow in the band's punchy, breakbeat-powered funk cover of Yazoo classic "Don't Go".

Review: We're full of respect for the team behind Jalapeno Records, who have now been offering up the finest in funk, soul, hip-hop, disco and breakbeat for 20 years. It's a landmark that calls for a celebration, and with this compilation they've certainly marked their anniversary in style. The 20-track set is full-to-bursting with party-starting heat, with vintage gems from the likes of Skeewiff, Ikon, Kraak & Smaak and Featurecast being joined by more recent highlights from current imprint heavyweights such as Smoove & Turrell and the Allergies. Highlights are plentiful, with our picks including the break-driven revivalist soul headiness of Aldo Vanucci's 'You're All Show', the summery positivity of Gizelle Smith's 'S.T.A.Y' and the rushing disco brilliance of Dimitri From Paris's essential edit of Izo Fitzroy's 'I Want Magic'.

Particular highlights include the bluesy half-time hip-hop number "Lean On You", Latin funk bomb, "Move On Baby" to the stringed-disco sessions of "The Beat". Review: Big time Jalapeno legend Soopasoul is back in the spotlight with the undeniable funk of Twin Stix, a three track banger taking in some high-tailing New York jazz in "Soopasoul Theme" thanks to that sweet brass section and big band blaxploitation funk tip. With touches of dub thrown about in "Lookin' For Freddie (edit)" next to some sweetly filtered licks of guitar, it's those solo horns and sustained strings that really hit the spot. "My Place (edit)" also drops in with some soulful vocal touches and a slight "Spacer Woman" Italo feel with its electronic bassline.

Review: Kraak & Smaak's recent album, Juicy Fruit, was packed with warm, loose and attractive blends of boogie, jazz-funk and soul-soaked disco. "Alone With You", a heartfelt stroll through soft-focus boogie pastures in the company of expressive vocalist Cleopold, was undoubtedly one of the highlights. Here it gets a deserved single release, accompanied by three new reworks. Purple Disco Machine steals the show with a version that deftly melds the Dutch outfit's original disco instrumentation to a tasty house groove and atmospheric nu-disco synths. Elsewhere, Knight One's rework is breezy and organic, whilst Loframes delivers a bouncy, radio-friendly house interpretation shot through with bold electronic motifs.

Review: Jalapeno Records present a 17-track V/A collection of contemporary funk grooves, all of which have been given a makeover by Smoove, of Smoove & Turrell fame. There are some big names from the 'new old' funk scene represented (Haggis Horns, Nicole Willis, Smoove & Turrell themselves) but as you might expect from the label it's on, the emphasis is more on party-hearty funk breaks/funk-hop than out-and-out 60s/70s revivalism. Renegades Of Jazz's 'Fire' with its wukka-wukking geetar and guest rap vocal from The Allergies is one standout, King Bee's O'Jays-biting 'Money Gone' another, but dive on in and find your own faves...

Review: Two years on from the release of her superb debut album "Skyline", Jalepeno's leading soul sister clears her throat and steps up to the microphone. "I Want Magic" is a truly collaborative affair, with Parisian jazz-funk/Latin disco combo Cotonete acting as FitzRoy's backing band and veteran disco don Dimitri From Paris acting as producer and mixer. The result is a wonderfully warm and life-affirming chunk of revivalist disco shot through with giddy positivity. Throughout, FitzRoy's sweet vocals rise above a brilliant backing track rich in Nile Rodgers style guitars, fluid piano riffs, warm bass, unfussy drums and punchy horns. The best mix is undoubtedly the "Dimitri From Paris v Cotonete 12" Version", which somehow manages to cram in a swathe of life-affirming instrument solos.

Hero
Hero - (4:31) 87 BPM
Review: Gizelle Smith's forthcoming LP 'Ruthless Day' is the sound of a dynamic artist expanding her horizons from the classic aesthetic of her debut, to explore a new brand of progressive modern funk. Expansive and exhilarating, it bridges the gap between delicate honey dripped soul through to psychedelic funk freakouts, complete with strutting beats and emotive lyrics. Smith's energy and personality are undeniable and both shine through in every track on the album. The first single lifted from the album is "Hero" featuring Philadelphia's Eric Boss and it is a neo-soul explosion that perfectly supports Smith's gorgeous vocal performance and her deep, life affirming lyrics.

Big Bad Woman - (3:09) 81 BPM Hot
Review: Bristolian duo The Allergies have long made a speciality of taking hip hop back to its funk roots, and 'When The Heat Comes Down' is no exception, with the pair's fast-flowing rap vocal underpinned by a full-phat bassline, soaring brass and some fine wukka-wukking guitar. 'Big Bad Woman' is a different kettle of fish, having something of a mod jazz vibe to its shuffling drums, boogie-woogie piano and wigged-out 60s organ flurries, all of which are topped by a full-lunged but uncredited female vocal announcing "I'm a big bad woman and I'll eat you alive". Crazy, daddio!

Review: Perfect timing for all summer soirees: London's premier funk dealers Jalapeno fire up yet another spotless collection of party nuggets. Showcasing their extensive repertoire, they've crammed in 14 unmissable, unmixed and unmistakeably swinging tracks by the likes of Featurecast, Beekeepers, Kraak & Smaak, Smoove & Turrell, Max Sedgley, Parker, Moneyshot and more. From prime-time party pieces (Hint's b-boy breaking remix of Kraak & Smaak's "Let's Go Back") to low-swung, hipster disco (Tom Drummond's "Keep It Moving) via deep house that's so clean and pristine you could do surgery on it (D'Steph's "Getting It On"), the whole compilation sparkles with sonic sunshine. And for those days when you just haven't got the energy to mix (don't lie - we've all been there), they've even thrown in a DJ mix of the tracks too.

Review: Dutch boogie house champs Kraak & Smaak knocked it outta the park last year with their Juicy fruit long player. Now they're putting out remixes of these two album cuts. "Stumble" is a sadness-tinged piano lament with soft, happy-sad summer day vibes. The Fhin Flip version retains Parcel's soulful vocals but adds slow, tough beats and low end rumbles. Elsewhere Richard Dorfmeister appears and delivers a spectacular "Cinematic Way" version and Blue Motel turn in a dreamy stonewashed synth rework. "So Clear" meanwhile is hazy deep house (Imagine a stoned Gypsy Woman) that gets remixed in an off-kilter funk direction by Memem.

Review: A little funk sensibility can be the best of remedies to sooth your winter chills, and this new 20-track compilation from JalapeNo is the perfect remedy. There's something in here for all walks of life, so be sure to flick through this baby to find your kink.

Review: Bristol duo The Allergies continue to hint at a future album release with this two-track digital 7", Lean On You. Featuring bespoke lyrics from Dynamite MC in its lead cut, it's a track that subtly touches on Southern rap as it does rock and Gorillaz-styled funk or Cypress Hill-styled hip hop. Venturing further down a looped-up blues and rootsy funk tip in "Working On Me", lyrics are swapped for classic vocal samples, brass horns, big beat loops and clever funky drummer motifs. Spicy hot.
