Review: Dimitri From Paris and pal Cotonete get a shot at remixing Gizelle Smith's recent single "Dust", a thrill-a-minute ride that could well be one of our favourite retro-futurist soul jams of 2018. As you might expect, there's a little more authentic disco swing to Dim and Cotonete's "Discomix", which adds life-affirming pianos and some superb orchestration while also emphasizing Smith's addictive vocals and the original version's punchy horns. Crucially, they make the most of the original drums, too, inserting several extended drum breaks to please the DJs. The quality of the instrumentation and the duo's brilliant arrangement can be heard even more clearly on the accompanying "Dubstramental", which also boasts some sublime solos. Brilliant stuff, all told.

Review: Gizelle Smith is one of the most underrated soul musicians out there at the moment. For any artist who is almost single-handedly keeping the soul and funk tradition alive, she should be front-of-mind for all diggers and lovers of the genres; instead, it seems much easier for people to look at the past. In any case, Ruthless Day is her second studio album, and it really is a refreshing 11 tracks of soulful pop music from the bottom of her heart. Honest and uncompromising, Smith's care-free stnce of current trends and hype-chatter makes this album an important one in 2018, and one that will undoubtedly be referenced in the years to come. If anything, it is FUNKY AS HELL!

Review: The Jalapeno Chilli series are coming out left, right and centre, leading us to think that these mad peeps have access to a bottomless pit of bouncy edits, ready and armed for the dancefloor. Much like the previous chapter, Volume 3 of the series features endless blends of boogie-flavoured dance anthems that know how to bring the FUNK on over to the ballroom. The likes of Lindo Man, Parker, Ambassadeurs, Kraak & Smaak, and the whole rest of the crew deliver some fine-ass party vibes that sure as hell know how to break those beats.

Review: Gizelle Smith's forthcoming LP 'Ruthless Day' is the sound of a dynamic artist expanding her horizons from the classic aesthetic of her debut, to explore a new brand of progressive modern funk. Expansive and exhilarating, it bridges the gap between delicate honey dripped soul through to psychedelic funk freakouts, complete with strutting beats and emotive lyrics. Smith's energy and personality are undeniable and both shine through in every track on the album. The first single lifted from the album is "Hero" featuring Philadelphia's Eric Boss and it is a neo-soul explosion that perfectly supports Smith's gorgeous vocal performance and her deep, life affirming lyrics.

Review: Izo Fitzroy is a relatively new finding for us, and it's thanks to the Jalapeno imprint, out of Brighton, that our charts have been graced by such a feel-good flex. In fact, "Say Something" is a perfect example of Fitzroy's talents; through a mixture of funky blues and house-minded grooves, this is a powerful bit of blue-eyed soul that sits on the edges of the underground and the mainstream. For this EP, she has also invited a crew of remixers - Smoove touches down with a lovely boogie version, Animist's take is purely on the house tip, Twogood?s remix is a successful blend of both of those, and we have the Smoove dub version to provide the deeper, more heartical frequencies. Yessah!

Review: Skeewif is one of the many breakbeat editors who knows his craft and, most importantly, knows how to get people moving and onto the floor. Back on the bustling Japaleno imprint, he drops the funkiness of "Mexican Flyer" all over fast-moving jazz drums, sampled and re-shaped to a 4/4 sort of stance - an excellent, party-rocking bombshell. "Delta", on the other hand, is all about the soulfulness, dropping organs, breaks and glam vocals over a tight drum groove - sounding a little choral and gospel-like. Oh, Lord!

Review: It seems that there is no end to the brilliance of the Jalapeno output with yet another classic now being released from Ephemerals. This original recording is smooth all over, with the relaxed vocal melodies layering themselves pleasingly over vibrantly orchestrated horn harmonies and drum grooves in an almost Chance The Rapper style of intentional looseness. This one comes complete with a bag of great remixes, including a trippy Asta Hiroki rework of the instrumental backing. Top stuff again from both the Ephemerals and Jalapeno brands!

Review: The ever-ready Jalapeno supply us with another box of top draw jams as they release their 9th edition of 'Jalapeno Funk'. This project features six originals spanning the full length of electro-funk and new school jazz, showing off everything great about the label. Our highlights for this release include the fantastically retro sounds of Boca 45, with the smooth grooves and scratches of 'Soul On Top', the magnificent John Turrell with his soulful vocals on 'The Temper' and the cali-swag driven arrangement of 'Talkin About Dat' from the wonderful Basement Freaks. It certainly seems that Jalapeno continue to tick all the boxes with this great collection of new wave funk and soul.

Review: Manchester's own Gizelle Smith returns with a fantastic double single alongside the Jalapeno imprint. We have been blessed with two soulful gifts starting off with the funky sounds of 'Sweet Memories'. This one features fantastic musical arrangement complemented perfectly by Gizelle's smooth vocal presence which dips in and out of well timed electronic FX. On the flipside we have a more northern soul influenced design with 'S.T.A.Y'. With rolling horn sections and groovy drum leads, Gizelle again finds herself bringing the instrumentation to life with her passionate vocal performance. It's clear to see her motown influences bleeding through into her powerful voice which stands proud throughout.

Review: Usually hanging out with Smooth, John Turrell went solo for his highly recommend Kingmaker album earlier this year. Now time for the all-essential remixes and Jalapeno have brought out the funkiest of big guns for this one. Kraak & Smaak add a little finger-clicking gallop to the groove while retaining the original's pensive dynamic. Sprinkled with keytar style bass walks and sprightly chords, it's got the OG K&S cheekiness scorched all the way through it. "Won't Get Fooled", meanwhile, is a lavish slab of bass-addled space funk from the one and only Basement Freaks. King for a day... Kingmaker for a lifetime.

Review: What a trip it's been for The Allergies; rolling from one killer album to the next, funk is flying from their HQ at a rate of knots. Here are two fine examples from their last LP Push On, both featuring their long-time friend and MC from Andy Cooper. Best known for his witty wordplay and character on Ugly Duckling records, here Andy gets to show off both sides to his expansive flow; "Main Event" is a chubby disco groove laced with mountains of funk, creating space for Andy's laidback-but-hypey charm. In perfect contrast "Buzzsaw" is a much sweatier funk jam allowing Cooper to get rapid and tongue-twisty in a way that only he knows how. Keep on pushing...

Review: Bristol's The Allergies (aka Moneyshot and Rackabeat) blew people's minds with their debut LP, As We Do Our Thing and now they are back with follow up, Push On. We're used to the pair effortlessly fusing funk, Northern soul and big beats but this time round they've expanded their horizons to also feature hip-hop, with UK MC veteran, Dr Syntax (The Mouse Outfit, Foreign Beggars) joining the fray. Some of the many highlights include the retro soul stomp of "Entitled To That", the Fatboy-goes-back-to-sixties Southern soul of "Since You've Been Gone" and the clavinet-driven funk of "Get Down On You".

Review: Last year, Bristol's successful neo funkateers, The Allergies, delivered a strong LP, As We Do Our Thing, on Jalepeno. However rather than rest on their laurels, the pair (aka Moneyshot and Rackabeats) have continued to release new material. "Entitled To That" is their latest non-LP track and it's a blinder! Furious 60s beats stomp ahead with tambourines, claps and raucous female vocals right behind - a super authentic Motown-style jam of Marthe Reeves-proportions. On the digital flipside, "Get Down To You", looks more to the 70s for inspiration, with a tight clavinet and wah-wah guitar-led funk groove that's impossible to resist.

Review: Veteran UK retro breaks duo Skeewiff (aka Alex Rizzo and Elliot Ireland) recently caused a splash with the release of their first album in ages, Skeewiff In Wonderland. Now they're back again, this time with a new, non-LP single. "Coming Home Baby" appears here in three versions: an acapella (or 'Wiffapella") a single edit and the full length version. Out favourite is the latter where you get nearly eight whole minutes of searing DnB beats fuelling a shimmy-tastic 50s/60s-style swing-along. Also included is the Austin Powers-meets-The-Spencer-Davis-Group Hammond heavy romp, "Triumph Stag". Groovy, baby!

Review: Kraak & Smaak singles are rarely anything less than party-starting treats, and this latest outing is no different. It helps, of course, that Eli Escobar - a producer known for delivering colourful, disco-and-boogie flavoured house hits - is on remix duty. His version of "U R Freak" is arguably a little dreamier and more musically intricate than his singles on Classic, but still packs a punch thanks to bustling organ stabs, bongo-laden beats and some on-point synth bass. The rest of the EP is taken up by Mood's modern boogie-meets-deep house remixes of "Prescription". Eric Biddiness makes his presence felt on the vocal version, rapping and singing over a squidgy, synth-laden backing track that perfectly tiptoes the fine line between club-ready fare and radio-friendly cheeriness.

Review: This London based band has risen in profile steadily since they broke onto the scene a couple of years ago with their critically acclaimed debut album entitled Nothing Is Easy. They've established themselves both at home and on the continent with a combination of a tireless touring schedules and prolific writing periods that sees them having completed album number three in as many years. As before, this new album once again sees them refresh their sound with a new set of influences and direction. Always unafraid to push the boundaries of their craft, this release unashamedly emanates jazz, afrobeat and psychedelia which galvanises the soul and R&B that remains at the core of the band's sound.

Review: Featurecast's Shout It Out LP came out one year ago almost to the day, so it was a surprise when this nifty remix compilation landed on our charts this morning! But, this is dance music, and the only rule is that there are no rules. Funnily enough, this is a rule that runs true even in terms of the sounds put together right here, and there's a few too many of them for us to categorise the EP under one genre banner. To give you a taste of the content, Ahee's remix of "Move" is a cut-up technoid bullet with gnarly injections of menacing wobble bass, whereas Inapt's grizzly take on "999" gives the term 'bassline house' an innovative new meaning, and Dub:ra's version of "Take It Down" steps into the darker and more unexpected world of electro-house, served up through a contemporary EDM filter.

Review: Having 'done their thing' so successfully last year with their debut album, Moneyshot and Rackabeats stride into 2017 with their targets set on another LP. The trip starts here with the seasonally-timed hip-swaying party jam. "Love That I'm In" purrs with sultry vocals, flexed with rippled lyricism from long-time compadre Andy Cooper and laid back funk guitar/bass groove. Silky, sunny, catchy.. The Allergies continue to deliver some serious gold.

Review: Dutch boogie house champs Kraak & Smaak knocked it outta the park last year with their Juicy fruit long player. Now they're putting out remixes of these two album cuts. "Stumble" is a sadness-tinged piano lament with soft, happy-sad summer day vibes. The Fhin Flip version retains Parcel's soulful vocals but adds slow, tough beats and low end rumbles. Elsewhere Richard Dorfmeister appears and delivers a spectacular "Cinematic Way" version and Blue Motel turn in a dreamy stonewashed synth rework. "So Clear" meanwhile is hazy deep house (Imagine a stoned Gypsy Woman) that gets remixed in an off-kilter funk direction by Memem.

Review: Already compared to many greats (Janis Joplin, Etta James and Dr John), Londoner Izo Fitzroy has been slowly drip-feeding us tracks from her long awaited album...since last July! Well the wait is over as Jalapeno proudly present her Skyline EP. She has already received much praise for her unfaltering message of empowerment and survival and now over these (Dr Rubberfunk-produced) 12 tracks we can really hear what the fuss is about. Fitzroy collaborated with all sorts of musicians that she met in Southern American dive bars some years ago and the results are contained here in all their whiskey stained glory!

Review: Kraak & Smaak, despite what you'd think going by their name; are in fact a trio and hail from the town of Leiden, Netherlands: consisting of Oscar de Jong, Mark Kneppers and Wim Plug. They've been at it since 2003 and their careers have gone from strength to strength; the bulk of their material devoted to this very imprint: Jalapeno out of Brighton UK that is also home to The Allergies, Skeewiff and Ian Britt. New single "Stumble" is a gorgeous serving of indie-dance-electronica featuring some bittersweet vocals atop and elevating chord progressions: an all round deep groove. Hit prediction right here!

Review: A little funk sensibility can be the best of remedies to sooth your winter chills, and this new 20-track compilation from JalapeNo is the perfect remedy. The imprint has it down when it comes to releasing contemporary soul-dance, and peeps like the Ephemerals, Basement Freaks, and Izo Fitzroy are all revelations in of themselves. Just to give you a little flavour of this steaming hotpot of sounds and grooves, there's a little tribal disco slaying on Soopasoul's "Hustlin'", vintage Motown soul with The Allergies and "Since Youave Been Gone", and contemporary r&b vibes through the vocal talent of Alexia Coley and her "Jekyll & Hyde" tune. There's something in here for all walks of life, so be sure to flick through this baby to find your kink.

Review: A Geordie soul act that tell it like it is, Smoove & Turrell, recently dropped fourth album, Crown Posada, to much acclaim. This was largely due to its thrilling combo of vintage style soul and funk. There were many highlights on the LP and now, as a victory lap, we get the deliciously funky, Chic-influenced disco boogie of "No Point In Trying" as another single. If ever there was and advert for the album it's this slinky-hipped rousing anthem.

Review: Kraak & Smaak's recent album, Juicy Fruit, was packed with warm, loose and attractive blends of boogie, jazz-funk and soul-soaked disco. "Alone With You", a heartfelt stroll through soft-focus boogie pastures in the company of expressive vocalist Cleopold, was undoubtedly one of the highlights. Here it gets a deserved single release, accompanied by three new reworks. Purple Disco Machine steals the show with a version that deftly melds the Dutch outfit's original disco instrumentation to a tasty house groove and atmospheric nu-disco synths. Elsewhere, Knight One's rework is breezy and organic, whilst Loframes delivers a bouncy, radio-friendly house interpretation shot through with bold electronic motifs.

Review: Finally here we have the much-awaited fourth album, Crown Posada, from the proudly gritty Geordie soul act Smoove & Turrell, who combine hard hitting social commentary with dancefloor thrilling vintage style soul and funk. They're' teased us with attention grabbing singles such as Glue Bag Flags, Fight On and you Could've Been A Lady. However there a more, deeper and richer delights to be had across the further nine tracks featured here including the Chic-influenced disco boogie of "No Point In Trying" and the edgy electro-funk "50 Days Of Winter". A seriously smart long player.
