The Rolla
Played by: Juno Download
Review: Rcola and JungleXpeditions is a combination that goes back to the heady days of jungle 15 to 20 years ago, and this nostalgia trip takes the form of 12 refined, stripped back and heritage-heavy cuts. It revives the dying art of jungle music that does a lot with very little, jungle music that shys away from over the top frills and brightly coloured extravagances. Just listen to 'Coded Riddim', which has a rolling bongo line over the top and bouncing bass stabs at the bottom; that's all that's needed to create a vibey little number with kindness in its heart and music in its soul. The amens come out on the darkness of 'Amen Meyer', the Caliber-esque licks on 'Latin Breeze' and the halftime steps on 'RPM'. Classic stuff.

Junglist Sound 06: Jungle Citizenz
Played by: RCola
Review: Bringing the 6th Junglist Sound project to the light of day, some of Jamaica's veteran DJs combine their efforts with brand new D&B producers for some fresh new takes on classic dancehall songs. Birmingham's Jungle Citizenz head up this release, with on-point jungle remixes of Johnny Osbourne's "Truth & Rights" and Sammy Dreadlocks' "Junglist Girl". Packing a punch doesn't come easy when you're given stone cold classics to work with, but these tunes just flow. Neck-snappin', feet-shufflin' bangers with that all-important infectious melody - you can't go wrong.

M16
Review: Sammy Dread's classic ragga stylings are given a dub-faced twist in J Bostron and Tricky D's remixes of dancefloor favourite "M16". First up to the plate, J Bostron fits out the original with all the trimmings of a reggae jungle mashup from times gone by. Tricky D's deep, cavernous dub redub shows some serious bass pressure, challenging for all but the mightiest soundsystems. Tabla beats and electronic squelchy bass make their way into the final mix, adding an intriguing eastern-worldwide vibe to the breakdown. Definitely one for this summer's boat parties, beach barbecues and sunset ravers.

Truths & Rights
Review: The third release from Junglist Sound features Johnny Osbourne re-visiting one of his biggest roots reggae tunes. BONES & Curfew drop a minimal yet banging drum & bass remix, adding pressure and tension with big, dirty Amens. The Seed Organization steps up with a future reggae re-dub, bringing their rough and ready style to a track that's defied the ages and remained a classic through years of changing tastes. It's important to note that although both tracks are very different re-working of the original, Johnny O's classic vocals shine though. Something original for the collector crew.

The Way Of The Warrior
Review: A feisty bass fiver right here, courtesy of German one-man-dub-band Ire Worryah. We kick off with a vibrant, carnival-ready sing-along anthem that rolls with generous amounts of funk. As the EP progresses we're taken deeper and deeper into Irie's bassbin with both "Dull Ass Cheek" and "Bass Trap Monster" leaning heavily towards the classic form of dynamic dub science. "Breathing Dub" elevates the groove with a major-key skank and shimmering keys and "Foundation" follows suit with another bounce-skank, but be careful... this one flips into a Rusko-inspired rabble rouser mid groove for added naughtiness.

Tek Care
Played by: Epeak, RCola
Review: Jungle Xpeditions continue to keep the fire burning with jungle infused D&B bangers for the modern day raver. This next release comes courtesy of Epeak and Virtus, who come up with the stomping "Tek Care (ePeak remix)" which is all swaggering beats, chiming instrumentals and chopped up reggae vocals with plenty of punch and dancefloor panache. It's virtually impossible to not dance and sing along to this smashing track. "Mentally Ill" is another powerful number with reverberating beats, grizzled vocal and murmuring b-line below. Cool stuff here from Jungle Xpeditions.

Wicked Reggae
Played by: RCola
Review: This one very much does what it says on the tin. Across the five-track selection we are treated to the sounds of Catalone as he presents "Sensi" - a frenzied array of sounds with parping SFX, jungle sirens and busy percussion. The title track continues, with cheery melodies and punchy drums, while "Don't Worry Be Happy" offers an even more upbeat perspective, with cooing, shimmying vocals adding a laidback atmosphere. "Just A Dream" is another vocal-driven dancefloor piece, and "Unleash The Lion" brings the EP to a happy close.

Lonely EP
Review: A curious artist name it may be, but Brown Noise delivers here with this four-track EP on Jungle Xpeditions. Kicking off the Lonely EP with synth sizzling piece and incidentally the title track, "Lonely (feat. MC Mac)", it's all quirky SFX, gloopy synth glitches, gently pattering drums and occasional lyrical input from the aforementioned Mac. Onwards through tougher, more twisted "Jungle Ninjah" with its warping bass, we reach "Samurai Lost" - another exercise in eccentricity. A Nice Of Tribe remix of "Lonely" brings the EP to a relaxed and soulful jungle-drenched close.

Rebel On The Roots Corner (RCola remixes)
Review: Something for the old skool jungle heads, here, as producer RCola revisits the glory days of skanking jungle/reggae blends. His version of Tippa Irie's "Rebel On The Roots Corner" is a classic example of the skanking jungle sound - all relentless Amen breaks, dubwise bass, bouncy chords and, of course, Irie's classic vocals. Also included is a "Reggae Re-Version", which switches the Amen break for straightforward, steppin' reggae riddims. In truth, it's arguably slightly better produced than the D&B version, though it lacks the sheer dancefloor power that delivers.

Iron Shirt Recordings 4: Vespertine EP
Played by: Konsida
Review: Deeply spooked beats and bass from New Zealand producer Ghost Note on this rather special release from Iron Shirt. After a (mostly) beatless and cinematic intro ("Vespertine"), Ghost Note drops some seriously low down and moody rhythms, such as the half-step dread of "Akira", the sub-punishing dub of "Disappear" and the echoey and chiming crunk of "Nine Nights". A real treat, especially who like their dubstep on the seriously smoked out and thrillingly sparse side.

Wait For It
Review: Expect some rootin' tootin' junglistic flavours to emerge from Inspecta and Ride One's "Wait For It" on Jungle Xpeditions. Rolling, perky jungle breaks are order of the day in "Wait For It", with whirring bassline setting the tone from below, with well paced, fiesty lyrical content courtesy of Melanie Jane MC. Accompanying this is the 2011 mix of "Brother", which blends rolling beats with accelerating bass, clattering instrumentals and plenty of vibes and vice.

Sort Dem Out EP
Review: A four-track EP from a couple of fledgling artists and split between Rahmanee and Filip Motovunski, this release on Jungle Xpeditions is quite unlike anything out there right now. Unique from start to finish, "Sort Dem Out" is a frantic piece full of trance-like bubbling synths, fast paced drums, a slightly out of place reggae vocal and bleepy melodies. "Sound Of The Police" is another sped up piece of turbo-D&B, whilst "The Montauk Project" is a dubstep-inspired cut full of whomping bass, and then "Obidaya" draws things to a close with more high-octane synthwork and pounding drums.

Ruff Times EP
Review: A fast and furious three-track EP from Saint Petersburg based Bina Assassins Crew. Expect hurried rolling breaks, stabbing tones and sped up junglist flavours from title track "Ruff Times" which accelerates into the drop with reckless abandon and continues with no let up, the garbled vocal barely audible over the flurry of beats and bass. It's a similar story in "Real Rasta" which bursts into song with trance-influenced synths and reggae lyrics, all with the same incessant, pummelling drums. Concluding cut "Irie" rounds things off with more vocal-led gabba D&B; building from an intro dominated by speech into the main part in which the main "Irieeee" chorus shines through.

Review: If you like your beats bare and your riddims stripped back then look no further than Killawatt who delivers this with the utmost finesse and precision ion this two track EP. Using space is something he excels at in the ominous oppressiveness of "Muggy", with its rattling beats, grinding bass and pervasive sense of unease. "Anguished Light", too, builds from a sparse and absent intro, into a hypnotic, beat-driven main part with snapping snares, muffled SFX and echoing anguish.
