Review: What's that you say? You'd like to own a vinyl copy of Muchos Plus's underground Caribbean disco fave 'Nassau's Discos' from 1978? No problem - that'll be ?400, please. Alternatively, of course, you could just snap up this spanking new repress from UK label Kalita... once lockdown's ended, the money you save will be almost enough for you to fly over and check out Nassau's discos for yourself! As for the music... well, there's a reason discerning disco collectors have been willing to hand over sums that could just as well be exchanged for a secondhand car, let's put it that way.
Review: With a primary focus on soul, disco and funk from around the world, London's Kalita Records are ecstatic to present the first ever official re-release of Cameroonian singer Jeannette N'Diaye! The 1981 disco hit "Makom Ma Bobe" has long circulated diggers circles as a sought-after Afro-disco number that originally appeared as one of three tracks from the Mut'a Mbamba single from back in the day. Now, some 40 years after its original release, enjoy a remastered version that brings a whole new level to its fidelity, coming packed with a sweet contemporary alternative b-side from Mr 'Edit' Mendel.
Review: This tasty EP from London-based disco reissue specialists Kalita shines a light on the work of obscure New York disco combo Sophisticated Ladies. On the A-side you'll find "This Ain't Really Love", which originally appeared on the B-side of a now sought-after (and rather expensive) 1980 12". Rich in intoxicating orchestration (think razor-sharp strings, jangling pianos and rasping horns) and blessed with some life-affirming vocals, it's undoubtedly a gospel-influenced, peak-time underground disco treat. On the flip legendary London crate digger the Mighty Zaf takes his sharpened scalpel to 1the Bobby Womack-penned 1977 single "Check It Out". Using elements lifted from both the vocal and instrumental versions, the LoveVinyl co-founder delivers a superb edit notable for allowing the killer groove and horn stabs plenty of room to sparkle.
