Kompakt Germany

Kompakt has been running for nearly 30 years. In electronic music terms, that's not quite archaic, but it's hard to think of many other German labels that have survived for so long – and evolved from experimental house and early minimal techno to all kinds of dance music, into a cohesive but widespread hub of distribution, booking, publishing and management. Founded by Wolfgang Voigt, Jurgen Paape, Reinhard Voigt and Michael Mayer in 1993, Kompakt is looking back at a past dominated by a discography of surprisingly large variety. Much-acclaimed and highly distinct artists like The Field, Kolsch, DJ Koze, Gus Gus, The Orb, Superpitcher, Matias Aguayo, Justus Kohncke, COMA, Gui Boratto, Kaito, Robag Wruhme or Saschienne have shaped their careers via the iconic imprint, just to name a very few. The complete story is surely much more complicated than that, but Wolfgang always says it best: “Forward ever, backwards never."

Review: Jatoma is one of Kompakt's rising stars, and the label deserves kudos for commissioning a diverse set of remixes of one of the tracks from his debut album. The Kenton Slash Demon version is spacey contemporary house at its finest, with dense, shuffling drums complementing the hazy melodies. In a similar, albeit glitchier vein is Dustin Wong's interpretation, while the Lucky Dragons version is all stop-start beats and a focus on the dreamy melodies. Best of all though is the Pom Pom take: in a rare remix outing, the mysterious Berlin act uses droning bass, snapping percussion and insistent piano riffs to turn Jatoma's dreaminess into a future Goth techno classic.

Review: Thomas Fehlmann's superb score of the TV documentary 24H Berlin was rightly lauded across the board, the latest in a long line of achievements in the field of electronic music that dates back some 25 years. Here we see three of the tracks from the soundtrack remixed, surely a daunting task for even the most seasoned producer. Thankfully, the two men chosen have taken up the challenge with aplomb. First up is Soulphiction, whose reworking of "Wasser Im Fluss" cleverly uses looped chords and shuffling drum patterns to build a deft, understated gem. Meanwhile Move D turns his more than capable remixing hand to both "Softpark" and "Berliner Luftikuss" - the former is a contented jaunt into deep house territory, while the latter is a melodic gem with softly squelching synths taking a journey through hazy atmospherics.
