Review: Childhood memories can be some of the most vivid, so it's little surprise to find Kolsch daydreaming about old family holidays on his sophomore full-length, 1983. While it's a thoroughly contemporary sounding album, there's certainly an overtly orange and red, Kodachrome inspired feel to proceedings, as if Kolsch was trying to capture the feel of old family photographs in music. In practice, this means a largely joyous blend of colourful synthesizer melodies, undulating electronic strings, and soft-touch beats inspired by a mixture of classic house, techno, tech-house and early 80s synth pop. Without fail, the resultant music is effortlessly joyous.

Review: Danish DJ and producer Rune Reilly Kolsch started out around 2003 and first gained success with his track "Calabria". He went on to efforts in the groups Artificial Funk and Enur together (with his brother Johannes Torpe) and then creating some big tunes in the mid noughties minimal boom, under aliases like Ink & Needle and Tattoo. The first material as Kolsch surfaced around 2010 and he's been a staple of the Cologne based Kompakt family ever since. With 1989, he presents the final chapter in a trilogy that started with an exploration of early childhood memories and influences (on 1977) and continued on 1983: which soundtracked his childhood travels throughout Europe. With 1989, we have arrived at his early teens. Kolsch explains it was "a difficult time in my life, where I mostly just remember the greyness of it all." It isn't all a brooding affair though, for the most part. From the sombre symphonic acid of "Serij", the pop inflected tech-house of "In Bottles" (featuring Aurora) to the epically euphoric style of dancefloor drama you'd usually attribute to the man like on "Grau" or the anthemic lead single "Liath". It's quite a story he presents here.

Review: After a 17-year hiatus since his debut album, Call Me Killer, Heiko Voss returns with the remarkable 3:30 Minutes To Live - originally released in 2022 on Michael Mayer's IMARA label. Now, here come the remixes, so obviously titled as "3 Remixes for Heiko Voss". Running Back guru Gerd Janson lends his rhythmic touch to "Follow Your Line", steering it towards the vibe of Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" with an infectious groove to captivate those bigger dancefloors. Next, techno pop grand dame ADA works her magic on the funk-infused "Talking Man", transforming it into sensationally soulful club track, while thirdly a potent Dub Version of "Follow Your Lin"" by IMARA and KOMPAKT boss Michael Mayer showcases the legend's golden production skills - breathing yet more life into Voss' work, affirming that good things do indeed take time.

Review: At first listen, Abaporu sounds decidedly underwhelming. This album after all, is from the same artist who created the dreamy indie-techno of "Beautiful Life". However, it gradually emerges that the Brazilian artist has merely opted for a more subtle approach. Granted, "Antropofagia" is leaner and meaner than most of his club tracks, while the titles track also favours a stripped back, banging approach. Like his previous albums, Boratto can't resist a good melody or the temptation to work in some rich guitar chords. Take one listen to the sassy party house of "Get The Party Started" and the shimmering guitars and keyboards of "Where I Belong" if you're in any doubt of his talents.

Review: Emmanuele Nicosia and Martino Bertola aka Hunter/Game were already known thanks to their releases on Innervisions and Last Night on Earth. However, it makes perfect sense that their debut album, Adaptation, issues on Kompakt, the Cologne home to techno-trance experts like Gui Borratto. Certainly the title track's crashing drums and tunnelling melodies are reminiscent of Brazilian Borratto's most epic moments, but it would also be a mistake to assume that the pair are only interested in tripping the light fantastic. "Hexagon" sees them venture down a tougher, harder techno route while the reflective "Intro" and the slower, shimmering "Origins" show that Hunter / Game aren't a typical trance-lite outfit.

Review: The ambient legends are back with a vengeance! They find a fitting home on Kompakt, home of course to Wolfgang Voight and the rather seminal Pop Ambient series of compilations. The men Alex Patterson and Thomas Fehlmann (Sun Electric) present us with "Alpine Morning" which is exactly the kind of trippy and spaced out journeys the duo are renown for, taking us on an excursion full of wickedly evolving layers of pads and other-wordly soundscapes. "Alpine Evening" is more upbeat; the kind of ambient house they're equally known for perfecting: deep and groovy with a funky bassline and exotic percussion, hypnotic pan-pipes, vocal chants and that lovely surface noise throughout. Finally "Alpine Dawn" closes things out with a brooding, dark ambient piece that at times is reminiscent of the gloomy and gothic vibes of Wofgang Voight's Ruckverzauberung.

Review: Given that Prins Thomas' paid tribute to ambient house heroes such as The Orb on his brilliant Principe Del Norte album, it's not that surprising to see him reworking Alex Paterson and Thomas Fehlman's recent single, Alpine. We can happily report that he's done a stellar job, with the near 12-minute Diskomiks offering just the right balance between classic Orb (think fluid synth movements, tactile bass and oodles of ambient house atmospherics), and his own loose, percussive, off-kilter Scandolearic disco sound. The full mix is accompanied by an edited, to-the-point version for DJs (amusingly titled 'Simpler Tool For DJ Fools'), and four minutes of beatless, muesli-sporting ambience (the 'Short Yoga Break version'). The latter is, predictably, effortlessly beautiful.

Review: London based, Polish artist ANII returns to Kompakt, following up last year's brilliant Korzenie EP in addition to a remix for veteran label staple Gui Boratto. She demonstrates her passion of music through deep, dark techno and soulful house once again on her new offering for the Cologne based institution: From the slow-motion hypnotic raindance of "Ride The Tiger", through to moments right in line with the Kompakt sound as heard on the deep acid/electro influence of "Aniitime" or the evocative and glassy-eyed dancefloor drama of "Galaxianii" - yes as you can see, it's all in the name!

Review: American producer Clarian is a busy guy. Fronting as A&R for Seth Troxler's indie label Soft Touch, he also mixed, arranged and produced Tiga's most recent album: No Fantasy Required on Counter Records. He worked for over a decade as the head studio engineer at North America's most notorious and sought after electronic music studio Lost Star Records and all the while he's released music on labels such as Visionquest, Turbo, Life And Death, Rumors and Kompakt: who present his new Ankh EP. The title track is a deep and tunnelling affair, wrapped up in ethereal pads, entrancing melodies and a tight groove throughout. Those jittery arpeggio melodies return on "Old Miami" a tribute no doubt to the notorious backyard shindig in Detroit while final track "Alienated" goes for a more gritty EBM/industrial-noir flavour and was the real dark horse on this fine release.

Review: After a long hiatus, the past few years have seen Reinhard Voigt enjoy a resurgence, with a string of releases on Kompakt. Listening to "Seven Lines", it sounds like the German producer has become more reflective - its stripped back drums, dissected percussion and occasional frequency shifts are the very epitome of understated. However, there remains a flip side to his character, and this is audible on the title track. Centred on a fat, warbling bass, Voigt unleashes a synth line so melancholic but beautiful that it sounds inspired by the godfathers of German electronics, Kraftwerk. The contrast between these two elements ensure that "Apokalypse" is memorable.

Review: Iceland may be known primarily these days for its air travel-disrupting volcanic ash and for being the first European country to officially go bankrupt, but that hasn't stopped Gus Gus from making one of their most diverse albums yet. There is no shortage of slickly produced, trance-pop - like the string-soaked "Within You" and the eminently hummable "Over" - but Arabian Horse also shows that they aren't afraid to flirt with other sounds. "Deep Inside" is a bizarre combination of late period Celtic rock Simple Minds mixed with soaring trance chords; "Selfloss" moves from deep synth passages into gradually sped up, drunken accordion playing and best of all, "Be With Me Now" is a symphonic slow motion beatsy anthem.

Review: Following up last year's excellent Frame Digging EP which just so happened to make our best of 2020 lists, New York-based producer Steve Moore of Zombi and Gianni Rossi and Lovelock fame returns to Cologne powerhouse Kompakt with the Auto Sequence Start EP. The title track with its emotive and high tech soul overtones is in the same league as legends like John Beltran or Neil Ollivierra, while the restrained dancefloor drama of "Assemblers" with its epic chord progression builds the tension and suspense just nicely before that massive drop. The glassy eyed and bittersweet ambience of "Shining Rainbow" closes it out.
