Review: 2011's hotly tipped newcomer, Clueless, starts 2013 with a bang with this newie on Kursed Recordings. It's good to hear that he's still pursuing his 'bass-step' agenda with an unstoppable fervour: The jumpy "Aha" sounds like a synthy vintage garage cat on a particularly hot tin roof, "Ghost Ship" is deep speed garage with sultry vocals and totally haunted bass (a la Actress), "I Feel For You" sounds like he's cut up SFA's Flowers into a jigsaw and put it back together randomly. Finally the pop vibes are dispelled by the virtually serial killer atmospherics of the monumental "Kick Dub".
Review: This guy is a proper turntablist from Austin, Texas. Aside from supporting the likes of Warren G and Gorillaz, he's a dab hand at hip-hop production, and this new solo album of his boasts eight hefty new bangers. There's a range of styles and influences on display here, "Kings Crown" is a real party starter with rattling 808s, affected vocals and raw, crisp synthlines. "Seconds After" is completely different - a slice of delicious deep garage, again on different tip is "Today Is The Future" which is basically deep and techy house. "Barrier" is totally melancholy synthpop and "Invasive Species" is weird, voodoo techno-bass.
Cosmetics - "A Bit More Exciting" - (5:06) 138 BPM
S0n!ka - "Bright Light" - (6:15) 138 BPM
Review: A split release on Kursed Recordings sees Cosmetics' "A Bit More Exciting" share the billing with S0nika's "Bright Light". Both heavy on the tropical garage side of things, Cosmetics cooks up a hectic rush of sharp, organic dubstep beats complete with ocean-deep stabs, while Costa Rican producer S0nika floats more toward the darkside with a militant drum kit and a deep, echoey synthline combining to make something both groovesome and truly affecting at the same time.
