Review: Well then, there is no denying that Kwaioto have unleashed a monster with this one as Cam Lasky lets loose his new 'Tokyo Year Zero: Occupied City Vol 6' collection. It's a weird and wonderful release that sees Cam explore many uncharted areas of dubstep, kicking off with the chilling vocal sampling and industrial drum designs of 'Tokyo Palace 1946', all wrapped up above a gnarly bassline, set to destroy systems around the world. Next, we witness the tense percussive lines and warbling LFO textures of 'In Monument To Loss' let loose, before finishing up with 'Another Name, Another Life', a fabulous piece of soundscaping with chunky bass instrumentation and syncopated rhythms all combining with a spooky undertone to deliver pretty incredible composition. This is one for the long play crew for certain!

Brute Cave - (4:36) 140 BPM
Reproductive Abyss - (4:23) 140 BPM Hot

Review: It's always good to see new music from Cam Lasky, who here lands on Kwaioto for the second volume of 'Carnivores', featuring three vibrant original stepper creations. We begin with the epic orchestration and feature-film like instrumentation of 'Forbidden Fruit', which come the drop descends into a haunted roller, before the shimmering percussive influxes and electrifying bass tones of 'Brute Cave' roll into play. Finally, the clinking rhythms and crunchy textures of 'Reproductive Abyss' see us out in style, putting the finishing touches on an extremely forward thinking dubstep project from Mr. Lasky.

Unlock
Symbiont - (3:01) 116 BPM
Telos - (4:30) 145 BPM
Review: The first question you're likely to ask when it comes to this new EP from Berlin newcomer Vasko is 'what does the "Unlock" EP actually unlock?' We'll put you out of your misery; both "Symbiont" and "Telos" unlock portals into a whole new space / time dimensions where absolutely nothing is what it seems and everything you knew about 140 music is flipped on its head. The former is a super woozy sludge packer with more reverse twists than a rewind addict while the latter balances tribal and trippy with precision weirdness. More Dilla than Darqwan; Kwaioto know what they're up to.

Occulted City Vol 14/Shinonome
Assassin Ogress (original mix) - (4:49) 140 BPM
Assassin Ogress (Babie GION Geisha Calm mix) - (4:49) 140 BPM
Dark Katana (original mix) - (4:36) 140 BPM Hot
Played by: NAZA
Review: We are blessed here with some serious stepper flavour as Cam Lasky steps up on Kwaioto for his Shinonome project. We are gifted two absolutely storming originals and a fantastic remix to celebrate the 14th edition of Occulted City. Kicking off with 'Assassin Ogress', a swampy ode to galvanizing sub weight and crunchy percussive movements. This leads perfectly into 'Dark Katana' which utilizes aggressive orchestral drum rolls intertwined with choppy bass synths, eerie atmospherics and growling reeses to create some serious tension. On remix duty, Babie GION steps up with his spacey 'Geisha Calm' revamp of 'Assassin Ogress', rounding off an impressive project with real finesse.

Metasequoia
Metasequoia - (4:30) 140 BPM Hot
Robo Crop - (5:10) 140 BPM
Review: Bim! Newcomer Gnarlock touches down on Kwaioto with two new cuts, making our Friday a lot more tenebrous that we'd have imagined. This is excellent, however, and gives us some hope that truly deep and shape-shifting dubstep vibes can still be found and enjoyed. "Metasequoia", for example, is a dark and foreboding lick, built for dancehall destruction and some pretty strict corner-dwelling from the heads, but "Robo Cop" is no inferior when it comes to monumental walls of bass and dread-out vibes. Catch Mala and Deep Medi clocking on to this gear...

Review: Kyoto representing: after almost a decade in the dub game Kwaioto bossman Cam Lasky unleashes his most ambitious project to date Occulted City. As you'd expect from one of the most consistent bass labels to emerge from the east, it's a rich tapestry of rolling percussion, molten tones and textures and dynamics. Highlights include the iron foundry clangs and low end bangs of "Embodiment", the grime flare and fury of "Firestarter", the woozy graveyard semantics of "Quiet Obsession" and the timpani teases of "Enchantress". Fantastical fire.

Gray Matter
N.O.D - (3:41) 140 BPM Hot
Fondip - (3:17) 135 BPM
Gray Matter - (3:26) 134 BPM
Review: Raw innovation from Istanbul newcomer Fosil. Fresh from his Badmash knuckle "Soundwich" comes another intrepid frequency excursion. Four tracks deep, each one seemingly designed to probe your deepest, most tender cranial corners. "N.O.D" is all sleaze and swamp drone swag, tension pulled taut with cinematic string sweeps. "Fondip" captures your nightmares and spits them back at you with coated with sugar while "Gray Matter" plays the consummate role of Professor Trippy Roller in a strange game of twisted 140 Cluedo. Nothing else matters.

Apostate
Apostate (original mix) - (4:44) 150 BPM
Apostate (Cam Lasky remix) - (4:39) 140 BPM Hot
The Dawn Society (original mix) - (4:08) 142 BPM
The Dawn Society (Tchicaya remix) - (4:08) 142 BPM
Review: The devil walks among us. Right now he's in Tokyo, Kwaioto HQ... And he's rattling out sounds so powerful you're already beginning to feel hexed just reading these very words. "Apostate" hits with string-cut drama and percussion that thumps the tubs so hard you'd sell your soul for a sniff of them while "The Dawn Society" plunges us even deeper into the bowels of hades with its spooky textures, weird reverse effects and foreboding bass sizzles. With added remix pressure from label founder Cam Lasky and bit crushing distortion munching newcomer Tchicaya, the devilish operations run deep. Don't get vexed, get hexed.
