Review: Of all of 2012's widely-lauded releases from the L.I.E.S. battalion of unusual suspects, it was perhaps Unicursal Hexagram by Jahiliyya Fields that stood out, quite because it sounded like nothing else around. The work of Ron Morelli's close friend Matt Morandi, Jahiliyya Fields now makes a welcome return to L.I.E.S. with the less comprehensive but no less mind warping sounds of Pleasure Sentence. This record also differs from Morandi's previous L.I.E.S. release in incorporating more clearly rhythmic elements; the four tracks still sound resolutely like Jahiliyya Fields though and quite like nothing else. "Anon Anon" is perhaps the best example of this as Morandi utilises a solid 4/4 rhythm wrapped in animated analogue tendrils that ripple with gentle energy over its 15-minute running time.

Days Of Persistence - (6:43) 124 BPM
SH-High School Daze - (8:59) 126 BPM
Review: Continuing L.I.E.S. boss Ron Morelli's approach of releasing music regardless of whether it's brand new or been sat in the archives for some time, Legowelt's "Teen Romance" has been kicking about for some time. Regardless of its vintage, the track highlights everything there is to love about Danny Wolfers; spectral melodies, snapping drum machine rhythms and gurgling analogue basslines all sunk in thick-set tape dust. "Days of Persistence" goes in on a deeper tip with its sweeping pads, and "SH-High School Daze" is a bubbling pit of simmering psychedelic acid.

Entro Senestre
Root Canal - (8:39) 124 BPM
Siamese Connextion - (9:15) 127 BPM Hot
Review: This latest L.I.E.S. transmission is the full debut of Entro Senestre, the US-based production partner of William Burnett with whom he also produces under the Daywalker + CF moniker. With prior EPs on Echovolt and Burnett's WT Records, it's fair to say Senestre slots in nicely with the L.I.E.S. aesthetic. Lead track "Root Canal" combines dark gurgling synths with steely jacking rhythms reminiscent of Svengalisghost and Steve Summers' recent material, while "Siamese Connextion" is significantly lighter in tone, with classic Detroit-inspired stabs that power forward on a wave of warm pads.

Money Becomes Only Itself - (4:35)
Put That Crotchless Thing On, Then Save My Life - (7:10) Hot
Review: Torn Hawk has broken through in a big way this recently, putting out a bewildering array of material across L.I.E.S, Emotional Response and his own Valcrond Video label. After a few appearances on the L.I.E.S. white label series, the Brooklyn artist makes his label debut proper with one of his most varied releases to date. "Bad Deadlift" sees the producer create some deeply pulsating body music with elements of dub techno in its thick textures, while "Trapdoor" sees the producer deliver a more explicitly Balearic jam, albeit coated in grit. "Money Becomes Only Itself" is the most unexpectedly fast track we've heard from Wyatt, reaching classic industrial techno speeds but taking the sound into a more blessed out realm, while "Put That Crotchless Thing On, Then Save My Life" takes things back down a peg with easily the most drugged-out thing Wyatt has made. Essential to say the least.

From White To Red - (6:59) 130 BPM
From Wood To Stone - (6:49) 126 BPM
From Sea To Sea - (9:09) 127 BPM Hot
Review: IAI Movement marks the debut L.I.E.S. appearance of Parisian producer Voiski. Active since 2008 on a number of labels including Groom Records, Construct Re-Form and most recently Syncrophone, across which he has put out a number of records exploring the rawer side of deep house, Voiski's addition to the L.I.E.S. discography bumps hard, with the disembodied vocals and cast-iron percussion of "From White To Red" a thumping floor-focused effort in the Delroy Edwards vein which gives way to some unexpectedly melodic chords. "From Wood To Stone" takes things in a classic Chi house direction while "From Sea To Sea" combines the kind of jacking machine rhythms Svengalisghost would be jealous of with a trance-inducing synth backdrop that delivers one of the label's most transcendental moments.

Capri Social
Capri Social - (8:18) 120 BPM Hot
Haitian Priest - (6:35) 160 BPM
Goetz - (7:06) 123 BPM
Review: Marcos Cabral's production renaissance under the cultured guidance of L.I.E.S. boss Ron Morelli continues apace here with Capri Social a fine EP-shaped addendum release to False Memories, the double LP issued on the label last year. If you liked the rough-edged approach of the archival material on that album, you'll want to check the three tracks here as Cabral burrows ever further into the crawlspace between house and techno. "Capri Social" is the track most people will immediately gravitate towards, the warbling melodies and loose kicks doused in a coat of static that grabs you immediately. It's trumped however by "Haitian Priest" which seemingly aligns on a similar psychedelic groove that label mate Jahiliyya Fields has found of late. Do check "Goetz" if you like some playful melodic fading in your booming techno.

Review: New York-based Shawn O'Sullivan is a man of many aliases; as well as exploring new wave sounds as part of Led Er Est and Further Reductions, he has been gaining plaudits for his solo productions under his own name on The Corner, as 400PPM for Avian, and as Vapauteen. Under the latter, O'Sullivan provided one of the most coveted L.I.E.S. white label releases at the beginning of 2012, exploring the industrial techno heritage that has clearly inspired his solo work. Back on L.I.E.S. with this self-titled six-track collection, the current Vapauteen manifestation differs from the consistently frenetic pace of his debut for Morelli's label - the first three tracks see him engage with slower tempos across three tracks that call to mind Skudge duo Fishermen, while the rest are "strictly about power electronics and harsh tone work outs".

Review: This debut set from Shadowlust further qualifies the notion that L.I.E.S. use the album format to satisfy Ron Morelli's more esoteric whims. Trust In Pain sees label regular Marquis 'Svengalisghost' Cooper teaming up with Opal Tapes artist Lili '51717' Schulder for an eight-track journey through foreboding, industrial soundscapes. Whereas Cooper's solo work has been characterised by a sense of reckless abandon and improvisation, Shadowlust feels more about restraint and the tensile energy that emerges when Schulder's disguised vocals are given the space to filter out. There's little in the way of dancefloor concession here, instead Trust In Pain feels like a compelling exercise in contemporary avant garde electronics.

White Owl - (5:44) 137 BPM
The Fast Lane - (5:32) 128 BPM Hot
Drop Dead - (5:21) 137 BPM
Review: Operating at a speed of releases that shouldn't be possible with your label boss is in the midst of a 3 month European tour, the LIES juggernaut spits out its latest slab of essential, grizzled floor weaponry in the shape of this White Owl EP from Delroy Edwards. This three track release maintains the high BPM trajectory of Edwards previous LIES transmissions, with the A Side title track a rugged, heads down DJ tool that could feasibly have been lifted from the unreleased archives of Dance Mania. The same no nonsense approach is retained on the flip, though "The Fast Lane" is markedly less aggressive, relying on a central warbling motif to capture your attention; "Drop Dead" winds it back to the stripped back, gnarled kick drum flex. Strictly for the DJs.

Review: Having finally unleashed that EP of dystopian techno brilliance from Steve More last month, Long Island Electrical Systems waste little time in following it up with something equally special! Willie Burns is the latest alias of Brooklyn's William Burnett, a producer with labels such as Supersoul and Disco Capablanca in his armoury. Across five tracks Burns delights in a disjointed approach to house rhythms perfectly typified by the opening swirls of glowering analogues that run through "Fantasy MD". Elsewhere raw piano stabs cascade brilliantly around your senses on "Key Horizon", a track which wouldn't seem out of place on Mathematics! On the flip the jerked out simmering electro heat of "Dr Monkey" is a highlight amongst three further examples of rough round the edges machine funk brilliance. Fans of the aforementioned label run by Jamal Moss or the esoteric sounds of Future Times should be all over this!

Review: Emerging On L.I.E.S. last year with his own individual take on hardware-based house music, Svengalisghost's Mind Control EP offered a unique take on the jacking Chicago framework. Supposedly an advocate of what he calls the "Anti-Beat", the producer uses his hardware to reconstruct what he's learned from the original pioneers of house and "retransmits the sounds which lie somewhere in the realm of unhinged synth punk or industrial forward-thinking beat electronics." The results on the Vicious Circle EP are even bigger in scale than his debut; "Hidden Cities" is pure warehouse techno, combining stern, floor shaking kicks and psychedelic acid tendrils, while "High Heel Sleaze" is a similarly gnarled track, whose mechanical rhythms are caught up in a maelstrom of analogue texture; "Judged By Machine" closes with distorted acid lines playing off against a ghostly, indistinct vocal trapped inside the melee. Another killer from L.I.E.S. - don't sleep.

Review: Brandishing a head of peppery grey hair despite his youth, the Brooklyn-based Terekke looks as distinctive as the music he makes, a sticky and extended take on electronic production described in more vivid terms by L.I.E.S. label boss Ron Morelli as "crazy, lo-fi, fucked-up, weird house music." Coupled with an enigmatic nature and a lack of tangible output since his emergence with the debut L.I.E.S. white label in the summer of 2011, the three tracks within more than live up to the expectation set upon him and demonstrate the lucid brand of barely rhythmic electronics that Terekke does so well.

Review: Although he's been working with Bookworms under the Confused House banner and Ron Morelli on the Two Dogs In A House Project, The Outermaze is the first full solo transmission we've seen from Jason Letkiewicz's Steve Summers moniker for almost year, and it marks something of a rebirth for the producer. Gone is the Chicago-inspired jack, to be replaced with a bold take on hardware techno, filled with sinister synth textures swirling in the void; "Call of the Wild" pairs its touch rhythms with a belching bass synth that sounds like a grizzly bear, while "New Surroundings" utilises the kind of sharp, ragged acid-inspired synths that nevertheless sound strangely melodic. "The Outermaze" is the real killer however, with ragged percussion and discordant keys bristling over a pulsating bassline. We're fans of pretty much anything L.I.E.S. at Juno HQ, but this record is something quite special indeed.

Review: Malaysian-in-Shanghai Tsuzing is one of the more interesting recent additions to the L.I.E.S roster, if only for his interest in blending elements of EBM, industrial and new wave influences with the scuffed house and bleak techno the label is renowned for. There's much to enjoy on the fast-rising producer's second E.P for Ron Morelli's label, not least the clanking, Nitzer Ebb-inspired thump of opener "4 Floors of Whores". Even better is standout "Frankincense & Myrrh", a hellish fusion of riotous rave influences, twisted stabs, thunderous beats and mangled sirens. "Khi-Tang" is a little more subdued, but still deliciously strange and metallic (think Cabaret Voltaire meets Willie Burns, and you're close), while "Odd" is a cacophonous chunk of nightmarish industrial techno.

Review: Throwing the weight of your enthusiasm into uncovering the identity of Person Of Interest using your search engine of choice is one of the more futile ways to spend your spare time. Aside from the insinuation by LIES that POI is a Brooklyn-based producer, you'll find little more than numerous fan sites to the Jim Caviezel fronted TV drama of the same name. Just accept this cloak of anonymity and focus on the cuts! What You Think You Want is a fine addition to another busy year for LIES, and the title cut has already been causing dancefloor bedlam in the hands of some well chosen selectors. "Keep It Moving" offers a less haywire side to POI and gets quite beautiful towards the end, whilst "My 97s" is a murky dancefloor cut that wouldn't sound out of place wedged inbetween some grime. Killer sleeve from long time LIES art affiliate Pete Leonard!

Review: Unicursal Hexagram, the debut album from Brooklyn-based experimentalist Jahiliyya Fields remains a highlight of the L.I.E.S. discography some three years after its release. The left-of-centre synthesizer soundscapes, droning textures and experimental explorations were astounding at the time, and it's an album you can revisit now and still uncover new depths. On Chance Life, his second album for L.I.E.S., Jahiliyya Fields changes tack a little with the 11 tracks a tad closer to the dancefloor. While there are still out-there moments (including a bizarre spoken word cut), for the most part the album pairs his throbbing synthesizers and crusty electronics with dense techno grooves, psychedelic tribal rhythms and humid box jams.

Review: As 2013 has progressed, the output of Ron Morelli's L.I.E.S label has become increasingly challenging, delivering a fierce blend of distorted darkroom techno and gritty industrial fuzz. Morelli is nothing if not open-minded, though, and this second label compilation - a follow-up to 2012's acclaimed American Noise, similarly featuring a disc of label highlights and a CD of unreleased bits - perfectly showcases the full gamete of the imprint's analogue-heavy sound. So, alongside the intoxicating techno drones of Svengalisghost and Vereker, we get the fluid electronics and footwork-tempo rhythms of Samantha's Vacation, the humid, dubwise electronics of Terekke, the wide-eyed goodness of Daywalker & CF, and the psychedelic synth-wave-meets-techno of Xosar. Oh, and the humid tropical warmth of Beautiful Swimmers' previously unheard "The Zoo".

Review: Fans of L.I.E.S. couldn't have failed to notice the Russian Torrent Versions label, a highly limited vinyl-only operation that shares many artists with Ron Morelli's imprint. While we've yet to prove a direct link between the two labels, the latest piece of compelling evidence comes in the shape of this L.I.E.S White Label from NGLY, an anonymous artist who recently debuted on the Russian Torrent Versions label. Fans of dank basement techno will be in their element with this record, with "Service Cost HH2" offering a muddy jack track featuring an uncommonly melodic touch, but "Some Relationships" offers a track in more of a submerged experimental hip hop mould. On the flip, "Speechless Tape" is a dark 303-led track whose copious reverb and spoken word vocal sample puts it somewhere between classic synthwave and acid, while "I Don't HAve A Soul" harks back to classic Chi house sounds, albeit glimpsed through that gauzy L.I.E.S. filter. As always, copies are limited!

Review: Following a productive 2016 in which he delivered superb material on labels including Dekmantel, Clone and Perc Tracks, Randomer returns to L.I.E.S for the first time since 2015. "Smokin" is a typically bombastic and bass-heavy affair, with the producer combining his usual metallic, industrial-tinged sounds and spacey electronics with a killer electro groove. It's little less than a genuine club roller that achieves a perfect balance between rhythmic funkiness and trippy eccentricity. you will then get the creepy, echo-laden hits, horror chic and panicked rhythms of "Velvet" and the dense, dusty late night techno throb of "Rye". While neither of the these tracks can match the thrills of "Smokin", they're both excellent mixing tools.
