Liondub International

Liondub International, born on the foundations of original reggae music, primarily hones in on roaring jungle and drum and bass but occasionally swerves into 140 bpm and dancehall territories. The label was founded by DJs and producers DJ Liondub and Marcus Visionary in 2008. Over the years Liondub International operated from Brooklyn, Toronto, London and Kingston (Jamaica) but is now run solely by Liondub in New York City. The label joins the dots between sub-labels Blacklion Movements, Liondub Street Series, Liondub-ODT Muzik and Liondub45. Liondub International has seen releases from artists including: Bladerunner, DJ Hybrid, Serial Killaz, Aries, Bou, Macky Gee, Euphonique, Jayline, Sub Killaz and Riko Dan.

Review: Expect quintessential modern day jungle/D&B vibes in this collab between Navigator and Bladerunner. New York imprint Liondub can always be relied upon to deliver the goods and this is no exception. A crisp, crunchy intro with prerequisite reggae vocal leads into a lovely, lilting track, with a velvety bassline snaking below as jungle chirrups and fast paced vocals add to the Serial Killaz vibe. Spreading the age-old message of "Peace, Love & Unity" this is an essential track whether you choose the vocal version or the unadorned riddim. Time to skank out!

Review: Previously known as Dutty Dubz, G!FT keeps on giving with this epic five tracker on Liondub International's new Uproar imprint. Kicking off with a Gremlins-sampling happy slapper 'Mogwai', he soon pushes down a rabbit hole of dark, tunnelling bass weight. Watch out for the turbine bassline and Q&A on 'Fear', the metallic alien purrs and wheezes of 'Punishment', the theatrical blasts of 'Jungle Horn' and the quacking barmy finale 'Right Down'. Don't feed after midnight.

Review: For an artist with a name as old school as Pharoah, this man sure has some futuristic sounds. Following his previous epic dispatch on Liondub International ('Mirage'), once again he hits with more cosmic feels. Funky, forward-facing and full of surprises, there's a young Bensley or Whiney deep in the mix when you hear the glitches and shiny soul of cuts like 'Party' or 'Threshold' while darker sounds like 'Ganjaman' or 'B.I.G' show plenty of promise on his gullier aspects. First dynasty levels of talent here. Keep your eyes on this king.

Review: As ever with the Dungeon Kru, we are happy to see them back at it again, returning to Liondub International for a top quality display of collaborative energy across nine outstanding originals. The team invite the likes of T-Kay, Bandit MC, Yatuza, B-Plexx and more onboard to deliver a wide range of drum & bass and jungle creations, all doused in that classic dungeon energy. There's a lot to take in with this selection, from the super gnarly bassline growls of 'Navy Seal' alongside EzTee and ELE to the super choppy, unpredictable bass slices of 'Number 1' with SUV. It's definitely a project we would recommend exploring on long play, with our highlights including bouncing drum designs and clever dubwise sampling of 'Ganja Riddim' alongside Maurizzle, next to the screaming bass crunches of 'On Fire', which features additional work from Falco.

Review: Everyone's favourite tea leaf returns, this time with a special release on Liondub International. Five tracks in total, all powered by his usual bulldozer charm and funk, this is one of this broadest EPs as we cross the gully board. From the sweet sultry vocals and soul of 'Holding Back' to the late 90s tear-up sound of 'Sound Business', Nick runs us through his highest and lowest emotions across the EP. Other highlights include the oddball off-beat growls and groans of 'Freak Show' and the warm as toast title track 'Bullet'. You're nicked son.

Review: Bassface Sascha and DJ Phlex are back on the fast-moving train that is jump-up and once more, they've proven adept at bringing to the fore some forward-thinking sounds in that regard. They're a name we know and the name of this release - Pioneers - hints at their long-standing role and is certainly a promising sign. Glitchy and with a satisfying sense of lagged out travel, 'Frozen Solid' starts strong and certainly bites hard, doing so in a fresh, unique manner. 'Burst a Bubble' is step-up in sophistication and nastiness, a snappy, stepping drum line pushing up into its metallic bottom line, this one is a proper creeper and it's such a shame that it won't be heard in the rave anytime soon.

Analysis - (4:26) 175 BPM
Review: RISE is on Liondub International and is giving all of us a lesson in how to produce tough, stripped back sonics which carry more attitude than a charging bull. 'Crossbow' is the best example of this, as a no-nonsense drum line penetrates a precisely placed array of gully bass pulls and hair-rising low-frequency pushes. 'Feline' is more classic jump-up, as a potent blast of stabs combine into the type of hands-in-the-air dancefloor action we've come to expect from the genre. Proper stuff.

Review: The internatty Liondub collective Dungeon Kru link up the massive for this generous co-lab collection. Liondub and Bandit MC join the fray first of all with the space-aged bubbler 'Fearless VIP' while Stranjah brings the twisted groans to the mix on the made-to-mix tear-up 'Untitled'. Elsewhere K Jah brings the bombs, Joely brings the breaks and Pharoah brings the deep and dreamy soul. Dungeon Kru bring the heat. It's a family affair

It's been this way for a long time for the German gully merchant and Liondub International have been part of the journey since the very early days. Review: Dub Force teams up with longtime Ray Keith cohort Bladerunner on this latest slice of junglist action from the Liondub crew. No surprises here as we are taken deep in with the familiar "Jah Jah is coming" sample offset with some seriously hefty bass pressure and liberally sprinkled hectic amens on "Jah Jah Dub". "Give Me Your Love" slows the pace with hammond organ, reggae chops and dubwise samples all framing a Lover's Rock style yearning vocal and oscillating bass. One for the jungle soldiers.

Review: Proper drum and bass full of ragga twists to lose your mind to on this compilation thanks to Lion Dub label head Marcus Visionary. This release moves from the rolling reggae rhythms of "Ruff & Tuff" to the frenetic throwabouts of "Original Jungle Sound". Tear out vibes are to be had on "Born To Fly", and to be honest this release doesn't let up at all, and for a real weapon check out the anthem that is Navigator's "Sound The Alarm". But for something to potentially wind down to, relatively speaking, it's all about Marcus Visionary's VIP version of Jah Cure's "Never Find".

Review: Liondub International have a bit of a reputation for spewing out some of the most venomous beats in the business and their talent for pushing some of the best unknown artists on the jump-up spectrum is undeniable. Sub Killaz are holding up that standard and they're doing it in style, something clear right from the start of this EP. 'Hands Up' reels you in with heavy, pounding introduction and its inch-perfect drums are ideally suited for the twisting, gargling bassline that pops up around the corner. The other five tracks are all equally as pernicious and they make this one an EP to watch for sure.

Thanks to the rich warm skank, gargling bass licks and sprightly synths, their thoughts about the evil paper are made loud and clear. With remixes from Noah D and Marcus Visionary, their broadcast is galvanised furthermore. The former adds a cool, funky west coast synth slides to the vibe while the latter gets slap happy with a cheeky dancehall riddim. Heavy.

Review: Prescott's sound has certainly matured since he emerged in 2010. Breaking through on Nice Up with raw bootleg badness, his gradual movements into authentic contemporary dub have proven his skills as both a musician and a man who understands successful dub dynamics. Highlights across this deep and meditative Liondub debut include the spooked out echoes and trembles of "The Eight Devils", the lonely oriental flutes and strings of "A State Of Mind" and the dark, pensive drama of "Moving In The Shadows". A true dub ninja, Prescott's rise is one that commands complete respect.

We open up with the unpredictable synthetic twitches and reesey rumbles of 'Rave Report', setting the tone of the project nicely before 'Dough' gives us a more minimal fusion of growling bass notes and sharpened drum designs. Next, 'Big Chungus' opens up the roof for an even harder hitting sub-line, upping the ante even further as we move forward, with Speaker Louis providing some additional work on the well thought out rhythmic arrangements of 'Shots Fired'. Another tidy collection from the Liondub dynasty.

Last week they gave us the feisty six-track "Ghetto Blaster" EP, now they're dropped another seismic sixer in the form of "Block Party". Just as forthright and banger-laden as the previous, highlights include the grizzly high end frequencies of "Pussycat", the much deeper steppy clangs and bangs of "Dis" and those sleazy west coast style synth leads on "Culture". Closing with the pure grit and savagery of "Rewind Mi Selecta", whether this is an album or just a massive bundle of tracks dropped on us over the space of a week we're not sure but we've loved this experience. Review: The Liondub International team seem to have a lit the touch paper this year, with their recent run of futuristic dubwise delights being one of the most enjoyable collections across the world of new school reggae. This time around, they welcome the explosive vocal ability of Blackout JA inside for 'Take Time', a dancefloor-ready march, doused in sizzling sub power and new school drum processing. This is a tune that is going to cause a fair few dances to turn up, with the full release also including a powerful dub mix, diving further into the hard hitting bassline action, catchy chord progressions and silky overall processing which sets the Liondub production parameters a level higher than their nearby competition. Fuego!

Review: It's been a hot minute since we last saw a brand new dancehall project that excited us as much as this one as Blackout JA teams up with Liondub International for a twelve track selection, channeling dancehall music into 2021. The list of collaborators for this one is the first thing that stands out for us, with the likes of Daddy Freddy, Ranking Joe, Blakkamoore, Echo Minott, Sophia May, YT, Ricky T & a bag more all getting involved with wicked contributions. It's an album that represents why dancehall still holds a key place in dance music in 2020. There are a couple of clear highlights for us across this release, with 'Love Dancehall' alongside Navigator & Sophia May being a really cool throwback to the original toasted dancehall sound, followed up by the super crunchy arrangements of 'Hidden Truth' with Souls Liberation providing a perfect outro track.

Review: 'Glory' glory hallelujah, we're barely a week into 2021 and Conrad Subs has already dropped a humungous EP on our laps. Coming via the ever-consistent and check-on-sight label Liondub International, it's a full-spectrum exploration as the Ipswich artist digs deep across the board. 'Higher & Higher' starts us off on a deeper note before 'Glory' goes all in with a raw, rough Dread-style sound before 'Ultron' straps us into a rocket and shoots us beyond the known galaxy. Wrapping up the EP we have the techno influenced 'Scatter' and the cheekiest, junglised head-chopper of the set: 'Murda Style'. Killer material.

Review: Vital by name, Vital by nature... "Criminal Minds" sees the young UK producer return to the NYC imprint with the start of an exciting new series. Delving deep into a fat sack of gully, each of these cuts rep Vital at his darkest and most uncompromising. "Criminal Minds" takes the lead with a classic vocal sample and a Serum-style naggy bass riff, "Acid Rocker" goes full-on foghorn fire with its big farty turbine bass roars, "Patterns" adds a little late 90s tech danger in the synths before dropping into an absolute sewer bassline while "Recognise" closes the EP with a little trad jump-up craftmanship. Riffy, addictive and laced with just a touch of soul on the vocal. Killer material; being a criminal has never been so much fun.

Review: Move along now, nothing to see - Russian jump-up Donnie Alex Prestige is currently 'Invisible'. Luckily there's plenty to hear though has he crash lands on Liondub International with four of his finest stripped-back sensations. 'No Oxygen' takes the lead with a real groaning, moaning bassline and pared back drums, 'Invisible' stinks with a burbling bassline and wafts with jazzy pads in the distance, 'Snacks' is more of an upbeat jam with skippier kicks and a Souped Up style funk while 'Get Nothing' gives everything with its addictive barking riff and strange twists on the fills. See hear.

Review: Jayline and Liondub are back, back again, the label which ceases to pump out music which pummels you, pleases and you and punishes you in equal measure. This time around the badman himself has worked on a five track EPand it's a percy, with slices of trademark damage that tread a wicked line between over-the-top jump-up, junglist fire and deeper, more considered cuts. 'The Galapagos Islands' is the best example of that, as the drums roll out into oblivion and a gargling expression of bass energy lights up the top end of the range in stabby, serious fashion. We also love the atmospherics of 'Sahara Desert', which sees floating vocal samples layered over in Technimatic fashion. Energy, energy.

Review: Toby Ross is unleashing an onslaught over on Liondub with a tight sounding EP. 'Jah' is a dark, moody stepper that doesn't care about rules and certainly doesn't care about feelings. The main bass on this tune oozes quality and packs some serious weight, reminiscent of the Souped Up crew. 'Beyond' is slightly less crazy but it definitely is still on the crazy end, as gargled bass notes inject a whole load of force into the arrangement, whilst a chopped up vocal adds that little extra. Tasty bits here.

Review: If you couldn't tell from the previous two editions on Liondub International, perhaps 'Criminal Minds Volume 3' will finally make you realise that Vital is above the law. With beats as brazen as these, he's got more diplomatic immunity than everyone ever involved in the Lethal Weapon franchise put together, and still he continues; the ringtone neck-wringing of 'Compulsion To Kill', the swaggering grunts and classic sample of 'Positive Vibes', the tension and paranoia of 'Good To Me' and ruffneck drama of 'Unorthadox' are all so badass they instantly come with a get out of jail free card. Naughty naughty.

Featuring the infectious toasty bubbles of iconic mic-man Navigator, it's an instant heater that's amplified even further by none other than Critical Impact who adds another range of bass tones and some crisp rolling breaks. Review: Big tings on Cave, Biological Beats, ByTheProducer already this year, now Liondub International... Yung Tox here is one what you earthlings call 'a mission' right about now. Once again he continues to develop his style as he fuses different elements into his jump-up blend. From the dark trip wormhole twists and turns of 'Exorcism' to the frankly genius rhythm and percussion of 'Free For All', this is Toxinate in his broadest and baddest form. Fans of his earlier twisted grot won't be disappointed either when they hear 'Cyber Pimp' and 'Hard Times' either. Demon-slayingly savage.

Review: Time for some premium positivity; Jayline returns to Liondub International alongside friends Smash and Deadlee MC and they're packing some 100% proof venom. 'Star In The Making' pack an anthemic punch as a glistening intro and hook flip into a high voltage scorching 'Link To The Past'-style bassline. It's backed by the even heavier 'Vanity'. Giving foghorns a 2021 reboot, this one rattles with about 50 shades of bass textures and hits like a locomotive, steam roller and tugboat combined.

Review: Legendary reggae and dancehall vocalist Johnny Osbourne has been one of the most distinctive voices on the roots reggae scene since the late 70s. Combine his perfect pipes with Toronto's original jungle henchman Marcus Visionary and you end up with a totally tropical drum and bass insta-classic in a rub-a-dub style. Marcus has chosen to release two versions of this banger on Liondub International, and it's not hard to see why; the virtual flip sees the original dubplate version gain a meaner work-over for 2013, adding an edge that will surely have dancefloors skanking from here to Kingston. A little bit a sunshine for us all.

Review: Established Jamaican super-producer Di Genius has spent the best part of a year compiling this bumper release of jungle refixes alongside the hugely respected jungle badman Liondub. As the beats remain the same throughout (hence the "Moving Riddim Jungle Refixes" portion of the title) they feature a massive array of classic and contemporary reggae and dancehall names, from Anthony B's "Give Praises" and Freddie McGregor's "Be Alright" to the undeniable vocals of Queen of Reggae Marcia Griffiths in her strong, uplifting track "No No No". Plenty of ammo for jungle and brighter jump-up sets.

Calling up a whole host of MCs for the jam, each one put their own twist over the sparse groove and staccato strings. From Junior Dangerous's hypey dancefloor twist with 'Floss' to the more stern and direct feel on 'Flexxxa' to Blackout JA's instant grinder 'Head Shot' this is a sick reflection of MC talent and beat fusion. Grab them all for a super creative blend. Ahoy hoy!
