Liondub International

Liondub International, born on the foundations of original reggae music, primarily hones in on roaring jungle and drum and bass but occasionally swerves into 140 bpm and dancehall territories. The label was founded by DJs and producers DJ Liondub and Marcus Visionary in 2008. Over the years Liondub International operated from Brooklyn, Toronto, London and Kingston (Jamaica) but is now run solely by Liondub in New York City. The label joins the dots between sub-labels Blacklion Movements, Liondub Street Series, Liondub-ODT Muzik and Liondub45. Liondub International has seen releases from artists including: Bladerunner, DJ Hybrid, Serial Killaz, Aries, Bou, Macky Gee, Euphonique, Jayline, Sub Killaz and Riko Dan.

Review: Following releases on the likes of Delta9, Informal, DNB Allstars and Deep In The Jungle, Gyro bossman Audiomission continues flexing across the labels with this massive wedge of bangers on Liondub International. Badness business as usual: each cut packs a twisted punch with a prowling sense of darkness and tension and features a range of high level collabos. 'Badman Style' (with DJ Gaw) slaps with voodoo bass harmonics, 'Shifted' is a serious bassline tear-up while the title track is pure fighting talk with trilling high frequency bassline and its crisp hench drums. High grade.

Power Of Mind - (4:24) 175 BPM
Review: Last spotted on various Liondub International VA collections, the currently unstoppable B-Plexx makes his full EP debut on the US label with these four fiery bruisers. 'Voodoo' stirs up some serious black magic to set the scene. Tight drums, groaning basses and an ice cold sample, it leaves us under no illusion as to what's next... 'Artillery' is all about those buzzy high frequency licks, 'Displacement' is a wonky old affair that you could imagine someone like Tyke or Hazard dropping at 6am and twisting minds while 'Power Of Mind' closes on a dark, demonic tip. Feel the burn!

P Skinna & Liondub - "Kickers" (instrumental) - (3:11) 137 BPM
Review: When you see a lineup of this quality coming together, especially at the pleasure of Liondub International, you know you are in for a bit of a treat to say the least. The ferocious combination of Badda General & P Skinna are out in full force for the fiery sounds of 'Kickers', a bundle of asian-inspired melodies and dancehall drum slaps, tied together with potent bassline progressions and intricate rhythms. The stuttering string plucks are even more potent when we then take in the official instrumental version, making this another very strong addition to the Liondub International catalogue.

Review: Bassface Sascha and DJ Phlex are back on the fast-moving train that is jump-up and once more, they've proven adept at bringing to the fore some forward-thinking sounds in that regard. They're a name we know and the name of this release - Pioneers - hints at their long-standing role and is certainly a promising sign. Glitchy and with a satisfying sense of lagged out travel, 'Frozen Solid' starts strong and certainly bites hard, doing so in a fresh, unique manner. 'Burst a Bubble' is step-up in sophistication and nastiness, a snappy, stepping drum line pushing up into its metallic bottom line, this one is a proper creeper and it's such a shame that it won't be heard in the rave anytime soon.

Liondub - "Father Jungle Rock" (version) - (3:23) 88 BPM
Review: Blackout Ja has teamed up with label boss Liondub for a dubby (no surprises there) double sided outing on an imprint which bears all the hallmarks of a classic UK label, with jungle, drum & bass and dub music intertwined the whole way. This respect for the history is apparent on Rize Again, as two loping, plodding cuts of funky, upbeat music come at you with the grace of a stoner and the enthusiasm of one too. The title track is lovely in its percussion and Blackout Ja has nailed the dancehall vibe on the vocal line - you won't forget this one.

Review: Feel the wrath of Blackout Ja and friends as he tags in long-time friend and collaborator Liondub for an empowering version flex. The beat is 'Rocking Time Riddim' from Liondub and Jugganaut. A dancehall vibe, warm and rolling with funk and roots samples in equal measures, it's a bop unto itself but for most it's all about the title track 'Wrath Of Supreme'. Lead by a reflective story on life's highs, lows and the need for gratitude and humility, Blackout is joined by Blakkamoore and Ranking Joe for a powerful piece of music that sounds great now... And will sound all the sweeter through a system when we can finally dance again in the future.

Review: The team over at Liondub have been on a serious roll over the last few weeks, supplying us with some seriously exciting new releases, with this new corker from Blackout JA and Kandiman being no exception. The pair join forces for a classic-sounding dancehall shellout over Liondub & Rumble's explosive '2020 Skandal Bag Riddim', deploying sharpened snare slaps and digital blips alongside a lethal bassline rhythm. It's dancehall in 2020 perfectly summarized and we simply can't get enough of it!

Review: The Liondub International team seem to have a lit the touch paper this year, with their recent run of futuristic dubwise delights being one of the most enjoyable collections across the world of new school reggae. This time around, they welcome the explosive vocal ability of Blackout JA inside for 'Take Time', a dancefloor-ready march, doused in sizzling sub power and new school drum processing. This is a tune that is going to cause a fair few dances to turn up, with the full release also including a powerful dub mix, diving further into the hard hitting bassline action, catchy chord progressions and silky overall processing which sets the Liondub production parameters a level higher than their nearby competition. Review: It's been a hot minute since we last saw a brand new dancehall project that excited us as much as this one as Blackout JA teams up with Liondub International for a twelve track selection, channeling dancehall music into 2021. The list of collaborators for this one is the first thing that stands out for us, with the likes of Daddy Freddy, Ranking Joe, Blakkamoore, Echo Minott, Sophia May, YT, Ricky T & a bag more all getting involved with wicked contributions. It's an album that represents why dancehall still holds a key place in dance music in 2020. There are a couple of clear highlights for us across this release, with 'Love Dancehall' alongside Navigator & Sophia May being a really cool throwback to the original toasted dancehall sound, followed up by the super crunchy arrangements of 'Hidden Truth' with Souls Liberation providing a perfect outro track.

Review: Bang, blap, brap, booyaka; however you like to articulate your gunshots, there are enough here to go round as US artist Liondub and UK artist Mr Quest team up with MCs Blackout JA and Anthony Johnson for a gun-toting skanking slap-about. More than just a casual shoot-out, with both vocalists going toe-to-toe over a range of vibey and sometimes familiar samples, this is an all-out massacre. For those of you hungry for a slightly deeper twist and a purring bassline, head for Selecta J-Man's remix. Hell, even instrumentals have been supplied of both versions for those not jungle enough to embrace the vocals. Sweet murderation!

Review: Liondub's 10 year anniversary celebrations continue with this savage slab of ragga jungle. This time the captain Liondub takes to the controls himself alongside fellow US jungle veteran Jah Boogs while vocal guidance comes from one of the most distinctive MCs in the game: Bristol's Blackout Ja. Here we find him in fiery form as "Touch Up The Key" (and its complimentary VIP version) brocks out in all directions over a precision-tuned subby bass wobble. "Dread" flips for a sunnier side of the stack as Blackout pays homage to his roots with more of a melodic flow to his signature gravel-toned bars. Loaded with instrumentals too, this is the full package.

The results are every bit as forward-thinking as you'd hope. Highlights include Bassface Sascha & Phlex maintaining the piano-laced vitality of "Inside The Vaults", Serial Killaz adding heavy layers of jungle murk to "Kill A Drum Pan", Bou continuing to show expert trippy science on his take on "Red Eyes" and DJ Hybrid stretching the elements for a roomy skanked out jungle twist on "Moving On". Brooklyn Dub Pt. 2 - (5:20) 174 BPM
Review: Achtung baby! Cologne's Brain Brainstorm returns to Liondub with this powerful seven-piece collection. Dubby flavours, hazy skanks, junglist beats and toxic levels of bass all play a lead role throughout: "Kill A Drum Pan" hits with tidal textures, "Forward" strips us back even further to the drum groove, "Moving On" fuses some expert cosmic drum work and sensual soul from Lady D-Zire, "Inside The Vaults" is all about the contrast between the euphoric pads and sizzling Lomax-style bass riffs while "Red Eyes" hits with an emphatic and heavily conscious vocal. Finally we're treated big horn magic on "Let It Go" (don't worry it has nothing to do with the Frozen song of the same name) before concluding with the rippled waves and tightly plucked guitar of "Brooklyn Dub Pt 2". An impeccable collection of modern jungle - this is close to a whole album. No filler in sight.

Review: The Liondub crew have always been excellent at unleashing fresh dancehall fire. This latest drop from Capital D is an excellent example of that in action as the devilish vocal tones and grizzly 808 pulses of 'No Time' kick us off with a bang', followed by the rolling trap-style drums and typically bashment-influenced chord stabs of the title track 'Boiling Hot', topped off again by Capital D's instantly recognizable vocal tones. From here, 'Danger Business' utilizes a steel-drum driven instrumental construct, giving us some sunshine singalong flavour, before 'Have Some Fun' gives us the most uplifting creation of them all for the perfect closer. Excellent work!

Review: Longtime friends and collaborators Capital D and Liondub get ready to 'Rumble' on this system shaking dancehall jam on Liondub International. Keys so springy they can send in the hearse, a bassline so bouncy it gets a proper burial and lyrics so fine they deserve a pretty casket. Available in a direct killer version and slightly friendlier radio version, this one's all about the blam blam blam!

Review: After years of singles, specials, EPs and features on a wide array of respected reggae and dancehall imprints, long time Liondub International soldier Capital D serves up his debut studio album A To Zed. Working closely with producers Rumble and Ricky Trooper, the Latin American MC goes in deep covering a number of topics and an even wider range of riddims. Highlights across this accomplished body of work include the big swing sizzles of 'War Time' the lavish skanks of 'Dem Bumbo' and a brand new twist on his tried and tested party tune 'Never Test VIP'. Full flavours.

Review: Seeing a new release from the Liondub international crew is always a Monday highlight, with this latest combination of Capital D, Liondub & Rumble Mad being another wicked addition to their already impeccable catalogue. We are given two spicy singles, kicking off with the super-electronic dancehall flavours of 'Mad Smaddy', seeing Capital D take the lead role in a serious heater, doused in punchy drum work and sizzling bassline energy below. On the flip, we see Rumble arrives with 'Bellyas Version', giving the same riddim a more instrumental feel, showcasing just how potent it stands with an almost apocalyptic feel running throughout its explosive arrangement. Love it!

Review: 'Glory' glory hallelujah, we're barely a week into 2021 and Conrad Subs has already dropped a humungous EP on our laps. Coming via the ever-consistent and check-on-sight label Liondub International, it's a full-spectrum exploration as the Ipswich artist digs deep across the board. 'Higher & Higher' starts us off on a deeper note before 'Glory' goes all in with a raw, rough Dread-style sound before 'Ultron' straps us into a rocket and shoots us beyond the known galaxy. Wrapping up the EP we have the techno influenced 'Scatter' and the cheekiest, junglised head-chopper of the set: 'Murda Style'. Killer material.

Review: Conrad Subs unleashes more dubs! This time he's flexing on Liondub International with no less than five floor-firing shock-outs for the season. 'Call It Love' breaks the seal with its busy flips between soulful depths and junglised bubblesome bass licks. It's backed by plenty more heat: 'Bad Behaviour' whips out a gnarly reese that slugs everything in sight, 'Problematic' is all about the high energy cuts and slaps, 'Spoilt Rotten' takes us to the furthest point of the solar system while 'Love Is Passion' brings us back home again with pure gulliness. Call it sick.

'Ravers' lights the fire with smashed up breakbeat action before '4U' takes us deep into the lesser-spotted paranoid side of Conrad's sound. 'Under Pressure' meanwhile is another wild ride back on the breakbeat train before 'Proper Things' closes with some of the most rumbly subs you'll hear all month. Pure batteridge!

Review: Next up from the ever-ready Liondub International, a throwback filled to the brim with lethal flavours as Conrad Subs touches down to deliver four tracks of pure dancefloor fire. We open up with the unpredictable synthetic twitches and reesey rumbles of 'Rave Report', setting the tone of the project nicely before 'Dough' gives us a more minimal fusion of growling bass notes and sharpened drum designs. Next, 'Big Chungus' opens up the roof for an even harder hitting sub-line, upping the ante even further as we move forward, with Speaker Louis providing some additional work on the well thought out rhythmic arrangements of 'Shots Fired'. Another tidy collection from the Liondub dynasty.

Review: Supporting the long-awaited debut album from Italian bass mainstays Numa Crew, Liondub International presents a double-A side featuring the one and only Dub FX on the mic. "Bass Hater" is a Frankenstein's monster of classic drum & bass and hip hop with its fusion of half-tempo rhymes and up tempo drums, showing off ultramodern production built around tightly wound bass burbles, minimalist drums and fine musical details. The instrumental flipside "B.M.X" leads with plucked strings suddenly run into the digitizer once the beat drops, a tense track of modern beat science at its finest to show off the Crew's most experimental side. Get involved.

Original Jungle Sound (Dirty Skank beats remix) - (4:33) 175 BPM

Review: Featuring a debut vocal appearance from original ragga badman Daddy Freddy, Liondub presented the talents of Mexican producer Isaac Maya earlier this year. Returning to the scene with remix pressure from Nu Elementz and Profile and Portugal's own Dirty Skank Beats, the digital carnage unfurls with Nu Elementz and Profile's remix, which opens in a classic reggae style that turns dirty in all the best jump-up ways. The next reinterpretation is left to Dirty Skank Beats, who removes the original production entirely and replaces it with down and dirty heaviness and hard hitting horns, leaving the majority of the vocals intact. Nicely does it.

Review: Based out of Brooklyn, Toronto, London and Kingston, Jamaica, comes the Revolution Liondub International label. Adding to the build up of Blackout JA & Liondub's forthcoming Love Dancehall LP (as Blacklion Movements) comes a dubwise preview in "Revolution", a 90s digi dub remake of a classic Derrick Harrriott riddim called "Tonight". Review: Soul quenching jungle juice from a veritable don on the Liondub label. Digital continues to kick seven shades of sonic shizzle out of the year with these two unruly shakers! "Sound Bizness" is a straight up power jam, all rusty amens, tight edits and even tighter twists on the drums. "Come Again" takes us back to the hardcore era with instant-impact detuned synths, bubbling basses and a snare that slaps so hard it needs an ASBO. Heaviness.

As with previous Gaw outings, the vibe is stripped back, relentless and naughtier than your old dear on match day; 'Ignition' is all about the beautiful rattling drum work, 'Fingers' is all about the sweet staccato skanks, 'For Real' is all about the grizzly schizo bassline while 'What's Up' finishes the EP with hurricane-like drop that comes out of nowhere. Review: Dear Diary, today we received a copy of DJ Hybrid's long-awaited debut album Diary Of An International Junglist on Liondub International. It's 20 tracks fat and, as you'd expect from such a prolific and hard working artist, it's well worth the wait. Featuring collabs with the likes of Rider Shafique, Diligent Fingers, Madrush MC, Redders and MC Foxy, there's a lot of next level action to unpack but instant head-slicers include the space age purrs and twists of 'Find Your Way', the menacing darkness and sparse funk of 'Pull Out Ya Piece' and the bouncing and swagger of 'Live For Yourself.' These are just some the many stand-out bangers from an album by one of the scene's most consistent leading lights in the last 10 years. Made for junglists, by a junglist. It doesn't get better than this.

Review: As if launching his debut album on his own label Boom 93 this month wasn't quite enough action from Brighton's DJ Hybrid, he's also back on Liondub International with Martial Taktics and MC Foxy on this bouncy, Trex-style bubbler. Complete with OG Foxy doing the business on mic, it's another instant classic from one of the hardest working men in jungle. For good measure he's remixed his and Haribo's 2018 Liondub smoking jam 'Stay High' into a riffy Serum-style chest-ratter. All done in his own unique and vibey way, Hybrid records are impossible to sleep on. Them's the rules.

No surprises here as we are taken deep in with the familiar "Jah Jah is coming" sample offset with some seriously hefty bass pressure and liberally sprinkled hectic amens on "Jah Jah Dub". "Give Me Your Love" slows the pace with hammond organ, reggae chops and dubwise samples all framing a Lover's Rock style yearning vocal and oscillating bass. One for the jungle soldiers.
