Local Talk

Fueled by a shared passion for house music, Local Talk emerged onto the scene in early 2011. The driving force behind the label is the powerhouse duo of Mad Mats (renowned DJ and club promoter of Raw Fusion/GAMM) and Tooli (celebrated DJ from Stockholm's nightlife, known for his acclaimed 24:HRS parties and blog). Local Talk serves as their platform to champion their deep love for the genre.

Review: When it comes to fusions of modern house music and indigenous music from around the world - most prominently the African continent - few are quite as skilful as "ancestral soul" innovator Boddhi Satva. It's for this reason that we're not surprised that Local Talk has snapped up this single from the long-serving producer, though "Basic Knowledge" is a far more straightforward proposition than many of his house tracks. It's available in two distinctive versions: the Ron Trent style loose-but-groovy drums, drifting chords and glassy-eyed synth riffs of the "00's Mix" and the bass-heavy, analogue-rich breakbeat-house shuffle of the "90s Mix". Arguably best of all, though, is the ultra-deep Afro-house delight that is "Together" - a wonderfully atmospheric number that's available in both vocal and instrumental formats.

Review: Lee Gomez started producing jungle in the early '90s, but a chance meeting at a recording studio in 2005 was the birthplace of Wipe The Needle. With Mikael Nybom, they released on Slip'n'Slide, Deeply Rooted House and Raw Fusion but since 2013 it has been a solo endeavour by Gomez. He returns to Local Talk, taking up where he left off on the last release with more UK broken beat vibes on "Round Of Applause" featuring Aleysha Lei, which is backed by some off-kilter nu-jazz as heard on "Jack The Nitty" and the late night bounce of "Event Horizon".

Review: Local Talk's packed release schedule means that keeping up with the label's releases can be tough. Happily, founders Mad Mats and Tooli found a solution long ago: the best-of style Talking House compilation series, which here notches up its 11th instalment. Packed to the rafters with high-quality deep, dusty, jazzy and soul-fired house, the collection's highlights are plentiful. Our picks include the hazy gospel-house hustle of Soulphiction's 'Niederbeat Gospel Dub', the jazzy Afro-house warmth of 'One Less (Main Send)' by Urban Sound Lab presents Miss Yankey, the extra-percussive, organic deep house positivity of Vick Lavender's spacey 'Shifting Gears', the bruk-up breeze that is Anthony Nicholson and Mark De Clive-Lowe's 'Another Story', and the sunset-ready, bossa-house breeze of Shaka's'New Relationship'.

Review: Some three years on from his last outing on Groove Odyssey - a fine hook-up with veteran vocalist Michelle Weeks - Wipe The Needle man Lee Gomez returns to action. This time round, it's the effortlessly soulful vocals of Alex Lattimore that catch the ear. On the original version of "Enchanted", Lattimore's slick, laidback vocals offer a perfect foil for Gomez's bossa-tinged gentle Latin house beats, fluid pianos, rich bass and sumptuous chords. Gomez successfully ups the tempo on the sparkling, Vibraphone-laden swirl of the "North London Dub", while the producer has also included Instrumental and Acapella versions to appease DJs who like to get creative in the mix.

Review: Following on from Unbreakable, his 2016 debut on Local Talk, Tommaso Garofalo aka Turbojazz returns to the UK label. Inspired by Detroit techno and broken beat / nu jazz in equal measures, "Two" sees Garofalo focus on the dance floor in his own inimitable fashion. Scuffled drums are combined with ticking percussion and warbling synth lines to crate a vivid, expansive sound. "The Joint" is just as distinctive; centred on a disco filter and dusty melodies that are looped as a back drop to mischievous acid lines, it is one of the finest interpretations of modern deep house that you'll hear this year.

Review: Over the years, Local Talk bosses Mad Mats and Tooli have proved to be shrewd operators when it comes to commissioning remixes. As a result, the label's vaults are full of killer re-rubs, as this fourth collection of reworked highlights proves. Beginning with an inspired Ron Trent jazz-dance revision of Kyoto Jazz Sextet's 'Rising', the set smoothly moves between life-affirming, musically rich Latin house (Anthony Nicholson reworking DASCO), jazz-funk flavoured 4/4 smoothness (Kaidi Tatham tweaking Coflo), soul-fired organic house jazziness (Waajeed remixing Crackazat), analogue-rich late might hypnotism (a show-stopping Jamie 3:26 re-wire of Soulphiction) and sunset-ready tropical house (TRinidadiandeep's inspired re-frame of DASCO's 'African Power').

Review: Regular collaborators Coflo asnd Lee Wilson are no strangers to Tooli and Mad Mats' Local Talk label; in fact, this two-tracker marks their third appearance on the esteemed Swedish house label. They begin with the deliciously warm and confidently soulful 'Quiet', where Wilson delivers an impeccably emotional lead vocal atop a bouncy Afro-house beat, jaunty bass, lively organ stabs and bubbly electronic motifs. Add in some bonus percussion and drum machine hits and you have a sublime slab of 21st century dancefloor soulfulness. On 'Wait', the pair opts for an even deeper and dreamier sound, with Wilson's distant-sounding vocals weaving in and out of undulating electronic melodies, ocean-deep pads and some sublime melodic flourishes.

Review: Local Talk has always been good at offering up themed compilations showcasing different aspects of the label's output. The latest, as the title suggests, offers up some seriously good nuggets - mostly made in recent times - that draw huge inspiration from house music of the 1990s. There's much to admire throughout the 12 tracks on show, from the undulating TB-303 bass, sparkling piano motifs and glassy-eyed pads of Deymare's '1990' and Gerd's terrific 'Deep Mix' of Mateo & Matos's Masters at Work tribute 'Maw Basics', to the organ-rich roll of Terrence Parker's 'Unconditional' and the breakbeat-driven deep house funkiness of Kiko Navarro's 'Dope High'. Kyodai's 'Breaking (90s Dub)', a mid-90s NYC meets New Jersey style gem, and S3A's breathless 'Sleepness 909', are also superb.

Shifting up the gears is Local Talk, the Swedish label celebrating its second record of the year with two epic, jazzy and melodic throw downs of undeniable house instrumentation. Deep and soulful, penetrating tribal dance drums hold down the rhythm track in Rick Lavender's "Here In Spirit Sid" that sees all matter of keys, strings, horns and bells light up its 11-minute count. Equal to that is Lavender's bassline driven hoochimama "Shifting Gears". Exotic cocktail tropicana seduction to turn you loose!

Review: Local Talk's celebration of the '90s house-inspired corners of its now vast catalogue continues, with the much admired Swedish stable serving up 12 tidy tracks from a mixture of rising stars and scene stalwarts. It begins with the tactile, sunrise-ready wonder of Sean McCabe's '6AM Dub' of his own superb 'It's My Life', and ends with the densely layered, loop-powered disco-house rush of Circulation's 'The Return (1997 Mix)'; in between, you'll find an array of highlights including Dirtytwo's 'Moody' (an on-point Mood II Swing tribute), the deep, Italo-house style colour of Willie Graff and Tuccillo's 'Sunday Morning', the vintage Kerri Chandler-esque bump of Tom Noir's 'Feel Me' and the rolling warmth of Art of Tones' 'Dirty Stories'.

He is back for another appearance on Mad Mats & Tooli's ever reliable Local Talk imprint with this one titled "Keep On" featuring two tracks that go down separate paths. The deep, evocative and altogether spiritual energy of the title track captures the very best elements of legends such as Kerri Chandler or Ron Trent, while the 6 A.M dub mix is a worthy addition too. On this version he streamline the groove for DJ use in fine fashion.

Review: Having released a debut album in 2017 via the GAMM label, Riddim Research Lab reveals itself again as some kind of enigmatic dub tribe with a curveball release finding its way to Swedish label Local Talk. This we can assume comes through Berlin duo Kyodai - who have collaborated with the likes of Basic Soul Unit, Mule Musiq, Freerange and Local Talk before. Together the pair deliver a largely instrumental number, strummed and dubbed out by warmer reggae vibes, a touch of disco and that tropicana flavour oozing from those sweet splashes of space echo and guitar. Review: Dan Tenor-City and Tom Funk make their debut on Local Talk with their track Close To The Source - featuring bumps from seasoned nightlife veteran Ricoh, aka Paradise Garage, Body & Soul and 718 Sessions legend. With looped strings that evoke memories of a true Moodymann classic, "Close To The Source" blends the raw essence of 70s disco and funk with the early sounds of '80s proto-house and free wheelin' jazz. The ceilings aren't drippin' with this one but it's hot hot hot. French act Art Of Tones somewhat dub out the original and dust up the beats while allowing the pianos to run wild - whereas the P.P.A Warehouse dub delves into classic deep house territory that's heavy on the bass and pumping in rhythm, allowing fat grooves to hold down the jazz tropes, and rhode keys to boot.

Review: Swedish DJ/producer Claes Rosen is no newcomer to Local Talk, having first appeared on Mad Mats and Tooli's label back in 2013. This belated second outing is arguably the most summery deep house track you'll hear all winter. Full of dreamy vocal samples, sun-kissed chord progressions, tumbling electronics and Midday-bright synth flourishes, "Kvasten I Hoernet" feels like the audio equivalent of being gently massaged while sunbathing. It doesn't feel like it particularly needs remixing, but the accompanying Needs Remix - deeper, dreamier, a little more soulful, and shot through with the bass-heavy warmth of Landslide style 'future garage' - is equally as impressive as Rosen's original. For those who need intro drums to mix with, Rosen has also included an 'Extended DJ Edit'.

Review: Last year Local Talk offered up Soulphiction's latest album (his first for almost ten years), a superb, soul-fired set of bluesy, sample-rich deep house treats. Here they complete the package via a "VIP Edition" single featuring a brand new cut and a previously unheard revision of album highlight "Feelin' Good". The simply titled "Version" mix of that (track two on this digital edition) is delicious, with the Philpot founder layering expansive piano motifs and dizzying solos over skippy, U.S garage-influenced beats and a warm, toasty bassline. Arguably even better though is the fresh cut, "Niederbeat Gospel (Dub)". Living up to its title, the track is a thickset chunk of bluesy gospel house dustiness built around swinging beats, beefy bass and layered vocal samples from a crackly old gospel recording.

Review: Amazingly, it's been 16 years since Canadian deep house producer Fred Everything dropped his first EP. It seems fitting, then, that his latest release is big chunk of '90s nostalgia for unashamed revivalists Local Talk. Everything is an old hand at this kind of thing, of course, and it shows. Both versions of "Brothers & Sisters" bolt classic garage riffs and woozy vocal samples (and, in the case of the AM Pacific version, snaking synth-horns) onto the kind of snappy, swinging groove he probably knocks out in his sleep. The best of the lot, though, is "Legacy", a flowery, near Balearic garage-house odyssey that sounds like it was inspired by 808 State's "Pacific State".

Review: You have to wonder what Local Talk will do when everyone gets fed up of new deep house cuts that sound like old US garage gems. This two-track salvo from Cazum & Andreas could give a clue to their future intentions. "Nostalgia" sounds more like a classic, Prescription-era deep house cut from Chez & Trent than a booming slice of MK revivalism. It's a good look, and certainly one of the more interesting Local Talk releases of recent times. There's also great depth and soulful intensity to "Can't Hide It", a warming exercise in synth bass-driven late '90s deep house. The jazzy keys and slight Latin flavour evoke memories of co-producer Andreas Saag's nu-jazz past (under the Swell Session moniker).

Moody
Moody (original mix) - (10:18) 120 BPM Hot
Moody (Butt Jackin' remix) - (7:12) 120 BPM
Moody (short edit) - (8:50) 120 BPM
Review: Brilliantly, this has one of the oddest concepts we've ever come across - a deep house cover of ESG's "Moody" with added Neneh Cherry vocal samples - yet it works magnificently. Musically, it's structured around a groove that recalls classic MK-era US garage - all shuffling beats and rolling organ riffage - on to which all manner of subtle samples and acid tweaks are added. It's simple but devilishly effective - think deep, driving and emotion-rich. The Butt Jackin' Remix adds some more late night riffage and boompty-influenced beats, while the Short Edit (not so short at nearly 9 minutes) shaves off all of 90 seconds. Still, stellar stuff all told.

Review: Johan Cederberg, or otherwise known as HNNY (and strictly pronounced "honey"!), is Sweden's new house don and he's been at the forefront of Local Talk's impressive run of form as of late. For this latest release, Local Talk has put together nine edits by the man himself, all loosely based around the old-school Chicago house sound. You got slick, modernised edits of none other than Dj Steak, DJ Duke, Purple Velvet and Lee Webster, among others. In a nutshell, this is simply a bundle of great dance floor tracks, effective as either DJ tools or as stand-alone songs. Large up!

Review: It's a sign of the ludicrously prolific nature of Mad Mats and Tooli's Local Talk imprint that this is their third compilation of label highlights this year. That the quality threshold remains impressively high is credit to their A&R skills. Encompassing revivalist US garage, twinkle-eyed deep house and enveloping groovery, Talking House Volume 3 is packed full of distinctive dancefloor highlights. Check, for example, the fearsome acid tweakery of Anaxander's breathless "My Aniseed Lollipop", the wide-eyed, piano-laden rush of Deep Space Orchestra's brilliant remix of The True Rebels' "Bitter Love", and the baggy, organ-heavy samba-house warmth of Tommy Rawson's "Don't Lose It". And that's just for starters. In a word: essential.

Maw Basics

Maw Basics (Gerd's NY Stomp mix) - (7:02) 125 BPM Hot
Maw Basics (Gerd's Deep mix) - (7:04) 125 BPM
Review: Local Talk launch their new Once Again offshoot in bumping 90s NYC house style, reissuing a Mateo & Matos classic from the golden age! "Maw Basics" originally featured on the 1994 EP Raw Elements that the NYC duo released on Black Label Records, with the standout track obviously in homage to Kenny Dope and Louie Vega. Remastered here, "Maw Basics" sounds every bit as effervescent now and it gets a near perfect contemporary dust down from 4Lux boss Gerd under his recently founded NY Stomp alias. Opting for a punchier groove, Gerd teases out the original's melodic core for a production dipped in dewy eyed house satisfaction.

Hot Medusa (Kai Alce dub) - (6:14) 123 BPM
Review: Given that he released his first record under the Munk moniker way back in 2000, it would be fair to describe Mathias Modika as a "veteran". The Gomma founder has released a wide variety of music under the alias over the years, much of it with a jazzy bent. He's at it again here, with title track "Hot Medusa" offering a 95 BPM stroll through hazy, guitar solo-laden downtempo pastures. Even better is "Purple Haze", which combines bumpin' deep house, woozy chords and notable Todd Edwards influences on a particularly tasty, mid-tempo shuffler. Best of all, though, are Kai Alice's two deep, jazz-house remixes of "Hot Medusa", which blend bossa influences with all manner of tasty musical flourishes.

The Beat Is Back - (5:47) 118 BPM
Review: Since setting up shop last year, Mad Mats and Tooli's Local Talk label has provided discerning dancefloors with some delicious, old skool flavoured house. This EP from Finnish producer Deymare continues that pattern, offering up four tracks that pit the piano flourishes and vintage drum machine grooves of Mr Fingers with the bumpin' basslines and heady soundscapes of Nu Groove-era NYC house. "1990" itself is near perfect, but it has more than able support from the subterranean New Jersey vibes of "Time To Move", mid '90s grooviness of "Keep On Movin" and early Masters At Work bump of "The Beat Is Back". Highly recommended.

Shadow & Construction EP
Shadow & Construction - (6:46) 118 BPM Hot
Deep Stripped Down N' Dirty - (5:36) 120 BPM
Rthoms - (6:54) 118 BPM
Review: Amazingly, this is the 17th Local Talk release, not bad going since they only first started operating in mid 2011. It's a slight departure from many of the label's outings, in that it doesn't sound like a shameless homage to classic instrumental US garage. Instead, the three tracks sound like fusions of contemporary house and classic basement-bothering garage dubs, with some modern bass music influences thrown in. The deep and chiming "Rthoms" [sic] is our pick, though the loose but tribal rhythms of "Shadow & Construction" do come close. The organ-heavy "Deep Stripped Down & Dirty", however clumsily named, is also pretty hot.

Review: Ben Jacobs ends 2014 the way he started it, with a dose of thrillingly sweet and melodious house on Mad Mats and Tooli's Local Talk imprint. "Somewhere Else" is a typically positive affair, with waves of ear-pleasing music box melodies, cheery chords and hazy vocal samples riding a swinging US garage groove. It's the kind of record you stick on to chase the blues away; it's almost impossible not to smile at its jaunty positivity. Ad Bourke tries a different tack on his rework, opting for a deeper, more melancholic sound and some hushed, DJ Sprinkles style beats. Even better is Hade 94's version, which adds a little analogue style grit and a booming, warehouse-friendly deep house feel.

Konbanwa
Konbanwa - (6:31) 123 BPM Hot
So Special - (6:50) 120 BPM
Review: As sure as night follows day, there will be at least one Kyodai release a year on Local Talk. Konbanwa is the Berlin-based Garayalde Oses brothers' third EP for the Swedish house imprint in as many years. The title track is particularly potent. Impressively, it chugs along in a foreboding manner - think tough, late night deep house with growling electronics - before breaking down into a piano-laden middle section that will have the hairs on the back of your neck standing on end. It's then a piano-laden darkroom sprint to the finish. "So Special", meanwhile, brilliantly laces vocal samples from an NYC Peech Boys' Larry Levan-produced '80s disco classic over a chunky, rolling, classic-sounding US house groove.

Candle Coast EP
Candle Coast - (7:10) 122 BPM Hot
Dancecrodile - (7:20) 127 BPM
Silent Sing - (8:20) 130 BPM
Review: After sneaking out singles for the likes of Futureboogie and Astro:Dynamics over the past couple of years, it's time for Crackazat to step up to Local Talk with his limber and expressive brand of synth-rich deep house. "Candle Coast" features a simmering garage swing in its rhythm and keys that could sit neatly in a Strictly Rhythm classic, but it's a track piled high with tension despite the easy-bumping surroundings. "Dancrodile" takes a more leftfield direction into tropical flavours with its bright and breezy keys and shuffling ethnic percussion, and then "Silent Sing" goes ranging out towards a proto-techno jazz fest that would make the Motor City originals well up.

Review: After eight years spent honing his skills on his own Speak Recordings imprint, New Yorker Henry Maldonado pops up on Local Talk with a typically warm and breezy EP of sun-flecked deep house treats. "Violent Mood Things" delivers the perfect start, with Maldonado layering darting strings, spacey bleeps and touchy-feely chords over a rolling, Afro-influenced deep house rhythm. "True Indeed" is decidedly woozier, with minor key chords, unfussy beats and a deep bassline underpinning a female spoken word vocal (an instrumental mix is also included, for those who prefer that kind of thing). Dresden-based Uncanny Valley member Cuthead provides the EP's most enjoyable moment, giving "Violent Mood Swings" some hazy Balearic shuffle via snare-heavy beats, acid-era bass and picturesque melodies.

Review: Ben Jacobs aka Crackazat (we love that name!) returns to the unstoppable Local Talk imprint with his debut LP, a spiffing thirteen tunes of chimerical oddball house in a distinctive garage flavour for party goers and heads alike. Heavy chords, mild pads and plenty of digital processing feature throughout this beauty, where tracks like "Let Love" and "Eye Light" - NY house kinda joints - blend ever so well with more broken and stranger counterparts like "Oh Pagode" or "Ambience", the latter of which is a blissfull excursion into dense and meditative soundscapes. Gorgeous!

Review: For those who lack the time and willpower to keep track of Local Talk's frenetic release schedule, the popular deep house label's Talking House series is something of a lifesaver. Like its' predecessors, this fourth installment was compiled by label bosses Mad Mats and Tooli, and gathers together 13 more highlights from their rapidly-expanding catalogue. Naturally, highlights come thick and fast, from the hip-hop meets classic deep house flex of Zoe Zoe's "Bust Them Wifes" and the classic Balearic house revivalism of Luke Solomon's "Lost Channels (Live Piano Version)", to the hustling percussion hits and constantly-rising electronics of Kyodai's "Konbanwa" and the delicious jazz-house bounce of Moodymanc's "Morning".
