Review: SR nova, driving like a joyrider... Five years after his debut album 'Turning Back', the man returns with his second LP 'Squat Rave'. Pure breakbeat abandon, delivered on Locked Up, it's another authentic blast back to the foundations while still staring defiantly into the future. Featuring collabs with the likes of Bass Junkie, Jem One and label boss Section, highlights include the utter bashment bliss of opener 'A To The Z', the rave angst and brute force of the title track 'Squat Rave', the dreamy synths and pianos of 'Solitaire' and the almighty space exploration finale 'Out There'. Review: Section is on Locked Up Music this week for a roughshod, rough-and-tumble release full of jungle flavours and dark soundscapes. I mean, just look at that artwork. Did you think this was going to be a release of niceties? The title track is a break-laden jungle stormer which just progresses and progresses, never staying still and with a new twist behind every breakdown. 'Puzzle' is the other highlight, a dark, pulsating number that rests on a broken sense of percussive travel and which continues the trend of excellent track progression. Top EP.

Review: Sicknote is a producer who makes raucous, fractious jungle music in the style of the legends of days gone by. This doesn't mean his music is out of fashion through, far from it, as this breaks-focused approach to heaviness has very much come back into vogue after several years out in the cold. Encounters is a fantastic EP that displays some serious percussive maturity, our favourite being track two 'Re-Up' featuring Jim Bane, which has one of the best drum sections of 2020 so far and a growling, naughty bassline that inches in with precision and depth. 'Monco' is equally wicked and we're going to be playing this release for quite some time.

Review: Locked Up Music isn't a label that we know too well and Sust isn't an artist we're particularly familiar, but that makes how good this release is all the more true. With four cuts of rampant jungle to play with, Inside My Head takes the listener on a deep dive into the hard-knocking tones of breaks and basses. 'Legit' caters to the rolling crew, with a Sofa Sound-esque approach to the percussion, whilst 'Guide Me' ends the release on soaring, atmospheric jungle tip. Stonker of an EP.

Review: Every now and then we get a release that's genuinely unique and unlike anything we've heard in ages. This observation takes on a more sombre note because its creator - XTC-[Notts] sadly passed away recently, leaving this release and others by him behind. It's a fantastic gift to leave. Dystopic soundscapes, irregular beat patterns and consistently creative sonic construction all combine to make a four-tracker of stellar jungle proportions, it reminds us a lot of Metalheadz's Detboi and that can only be a good thing. Clearly a truly talented producer, XTC-[Notts] will be missed. All proceeds from this release go to charities chosen by his family, please check it out.

Review: Destination Hungary: Outsider makes his Locked Up debut with these four brutal slabs of icy futurism. Each one as bitter and brittle and foreboding as the last, we range from the tense halftime gloom and dank pressure of "Dungeon" to the savage acid jungle "Murda", a track that wouldn't go amiss in a Digital set. In between we have the stark grunts of "Pain Barrier" and the uncompromising fire of "Bad Timing". Perfect timing more like - more of this please Outsider.

Review: Nothing shows off production capabilities like a release packed with diversity, that covers all bases and which appeals to everyone in the scene in one way or another. That's what Xeropoint has accomplished here and it's impressive, with four cuts that range from the sultry liquid tones of 'All These Things' to the downtempo, eerie soundscapes of 'Metallic Planet'. 'The Shadows' is a highlight, a spooky track with a creative approach to the minimal end of the techy spectrum and which features a sick little bass note that almost makes the whole tune. One for everyone here.

Review: Section's Locked Up Music returns with two more exciting new-gen names, young UK firebrands Sust and Isbe. Sust takes the lead with the rattling sci-fi funking title track before Exeter's Isbe joins the fray for two hyper-groaned collabos. "The Depths" charges with a turbine bass warp while "Hal" subverts formal arrangements and gets just a little bit jittery and trippy. Finally Sust closes the show with an incredible roller that mutates and develops incredible momentum as it progresses. A genuinely unique EP. Trust... Sust has this thing sussed.

Review: An excellent 15-track drum & bass selection here from Section's Locked Up Music label. Conscience & Taelimb's 'Latex' kicks us off in fine deep, minimal style, while SR's pounding jungle roller 'Bassline' plays us out. In between you'll find brooding neurofunk (see, for instance, Cynical Gene's 'Jokes On You'), lively liquid-leaning steppers (Section's 'We Need You'), percussion-led tear-outs (Dapz's 'Hidden Messages'), dreamy, dubby near-ambience (Marcus Tee's 'Visions Of A Life Not Mine' feat Shyrren5) and pretty much all shades in-between, making for a pleasingly varied package that's also great value for money.
