Review: Debutant producer Absolute - thankfully not the Dutch trance don of the same name - hits the spot with "Mind Control", a brilliant tribute to vintage Chicago acid house complete with mind-bending analogue bass, clattering machine percussion and a attitude-heavy female spoken word vocal. It comes accompanied by a suitably percussive and warehouse-friendly Dub and two remixes by Rush Hour and Voyage Direct alumnus William Djoko. The Dutch producer first re-imagines "Mind Control" is a deep, dark and bass-heavy late night throb-job (the "Crowd Control" mix) before pressing the button marked "weird late night freak-out" on the low-slung "Mass Hysteria" mix.

Shine - (10:02) 124 BPM Hot
Desake - (5:51) 127 BPM
Journey's End - (5:03) 122 BPM
Review: Layered, progressive, modern electronic music with ethereal harmonics and a nod to analogue forefathers is a universal in John Daly's musical cannon. And with Shine he's formulated a song that could encapsulate a moment in time at a Love Fever party. That 5am throb. Peaks and lows of a breather in the night, the sweating crowd, the stabbing bassline and fluctuating strings played loud and proud. Detroit influenced yet clearly contemporary, "Desake" floats through this release with a lead vocal stab weaved into a dream-like bassline and rolling drum pattern continuing where Shine left off. And "Journey's End" may well be the secret weapon on this EP, playing out like a bird's lament.

Whispers
Moonchild - (5:04) 82 BPM
Whispers - (5:18) 123 BPM Hot
Review: Straight out of Egypt via Berlin comes this excellent two-tracker from the little-known Son of Sun. According to the press release accompanying the Whispers EP, both tracks were inspired by a week sailing a yacht around the Black Sea. True or not (we have our doubts), there's certainly a sun-kissed laziness - despite weighty kick-drums and hissing, Detroit techno style cymbals - about the woozy, Dubtribe Soundsystem style deep house of "Moonchild". While impressive, the real killer is "Whispers", which peppers a swinging, Dance Mania style hip-house groove with snaking saxophones and atmospheric, spoken word vocals. It feels like a late night Adriatic anthem in the making.
