Review: There's a lot to like about this debut EP from Soultage. Given that this is their first release, there's something particularly impressive about the warm, fuzzy chords, classic U.S deep house beats, tactile synth bass and soulful vocal samples of opener "Old School Love". The woozy, sparkly and hazy "Soulful Damage" is equally as comforting and attractive, while jazzy closer "Warm Up The Place" sees them dip the tempo, layer up the organic-sounding percussion, emphasize the bass and get busy with a variety of contrasting solos (think muted trumpets, and vintage synthesizers). To make an excellent EP even more desirable, Jacques Renault has also provided a typically rich, atmospheric and bumpin' remix of "Soulful Damage".
Review: Dealing strictly in pure house music, Brazil's Sphynx - made up of Marcio Vermelho and Zopelar - could well become the South American nation's best and brightest new talents; the popped up on our radar after an appearance alongside the mighty Soul Clap for Bastard Jazz Recordings. This time, they're up on the young Magic Jams with "No Ar", a soulful, deep and mesmeric house tune with a slow tempo and some deep-loving bass tones; "Enigma" follows soon after with a straighter, down-the-line house beat and some ethereal padding. On the flip, "Tempestade" goes cosmic thanks to its guitar riffs and disco sensibility, whereas Toby Tobias' remix of "No Ar" is a no nonsense house jerker with one funky bassline in its belly.
Review: Felipe Sa hasn't had a long and illustrious musical career as of yet, but the same goes for the Magic Jams label, who are only on their second release to date. Flirting with both house and nu-disco, Felipe Sa manages to inject a glorious air of playfulness into "Party Rock", a feel-good dance tune charged with the vocals of Ye:Solar. Felipe's 2015 remix of the same track injects a steadier dose of drums and percussion into the mix, alongside a joyfully stuttering bassline, while the Snacks remix is a proper house banger, complete with hypnotic chords and that unmistakable Chicago/Detroit flavour.
