Review: Man Friday's Pirate Edits series reaches its 14th installment, which means you should have a pretty good idea to expect by now. There are seven tracks in total, all of which draw on soul, disco or funk/jazz-funk sources... which is another way of assuring you there are no phoned-in, housed-up remakes of dodgy 80s pop or 70s soft rock faves here! 'So Long' is based on Debarge's shiny-suited boogie fave 'Rhythm Of The Night' from 1985, 'Sensation' reworks Loleatta's 'Love Sensation' and 'Music Upppp' draws from The Players Association's 'Turn The Music Up' from 1979, but the standout is '2 Late', a Negro-esque jazz-funk/disco/lounge concoction par excellence whose source, sadly, has us beat...
Review: If you've ever heard 'Another Brick In The Wall' and thought "What this really needs is an extended Italo synth intro," then this is the EP for you, as the Pirate Edits crew serve up 16 more dancefloor reworks of vintage favourites including Sister Sledge's 'Lost In Music', Space's 'Carry On, Turn Me On', Chaka Khan's 'I Know You, I Live You' and The Joubert Singers' 'Stand On The word', as well as many other, more obscure disco and boogie nuggets. There's a slightly 'kitchen sink' approach to the production at times, but disco and funk spinners should still find plenty of fresh dancefloor ammunition here.
Review: The We Mean Disco label has long boasted about their affinity for the work of Larry Levan. Here, they deliver an EP of "re-imaginings" of tracks that became anthems at the Paradise Garage. There are a trio of remakes of NYC Peech Boys' killer "Don't Make Me Wait", with Oscar R's surprisingly faithful, piano-heavy "Take 1 Reprise" edging out Phil Pot's more nu-disco influenced "Original Dating Groove" in the "best version" stakes. The EP's other two moments offer more straight-up disco thrills, with "Damn Damn Damn (All Night Long)" delivering some deliciously throaty disco-funk for peaktime floors.
