Review: "Overdrive", the lead cut on this 97th - count 'em - Manchester Underground Music release, is formidably dark. Almost charcoal black in its outlook, it fixes twisted, D&B/dubstep-influenced synths to sturdy but glitchy techno rhythms. Although at a house tempo, it should appeal to those who like to effortlessly mix it up between techno and house at a rapid tempo. "Wait" opts for a revivalist tribal flex, sounding not unlike some of the claustrophobic, low-end heavy groovers played by Danny Tenaglia at the tail end of the 1990s. A solid package is completed by Nik Feral's pumping rework of "Overdrive" - a bouncy remix that injects a little tech-funk into Eric D's original template.

Review: MUM showcases its darker side on Bad Girl. "Close It" is a droning techno groove which borrows from the heads-down repetitive approach of Sandwell District and Perc. Sonically however, it's a different matter and instead of focusing on drones and dense chain-mail rhythms, the track hinges on a rubbery bass and evil rave stabs. The title track has a less aggressive manner and French uses layered drums to create an arrangement that will have appeal with house and tech-house DJs. The inclusion of bubbling chords and a repetitive vocal sample will ensure that his music doesn't remain the preserve of techno purists.

Review: The ever reliable Manchester Underground Music return with a two track EP from Mr Pedros. Title track "It Came From Us" is centred around a Johnny Depp sample clipped from classic movie Blow, with the rolling, proggy groove sitting comfortably below. "Who Dis" is better still, with classic rave samples appropriated for a peak time tech house jam.

Review: Boasting track titles like "Cialis" and "Viagra", it's clear that Gabriel has got just one thing on his mind. Thankfully, he can back up his lustiness with house grooves that ooze sensuality. The aforementioned "Cialis" teases the listener with its dense, shuffling drums and 'come on baby' vocal sample, while "Viagra" is darker and less playful; over an insistent, tracky groove, dark chords climax. Gabriel rounds off the EP with "F U I Can Feel It". Its jarring groove seems to document a rougher experience - but the hushed vocals in the background confirm that Gabriel is a romantic at heart.

Review: It's fair to say that Pokoyo is full of surprises. The title track starts with clipped techno beats and a pulsing electronic bassline setting a frenetic pace. It sounds like a typical Fixmer-style electro-techno workout, but no one could be prepared for what happens next. A synth riff gradually enters the arrangement, subtle at first but then getting more and more intense until it sounds like the terrifying screech of an air raid siren. The Kyfu version is harder and more slamming, with tribal beats and insane filters pushing it to an inevitable crescendo, while the Merimell take is a jacking affair, powered by a squelchy bass.

Review: Formatiique make a triumphant return to the Manchester Underground Music label after smashing it with the Ibizan cognoscenti with the debut sounds of the inimitable Fuck Off. Choosing an altogether less risible titular approach, "Ping Pong" is a master class in bouncing tech house utilising well placed vocal samples that ensures it is as fun as it is effective. Complementing the original, MUM have commissioned two well chosen remixers with Ukrainian Justy adding to his glowering reputation on a typically strong minimal revision, whilst Form/Definitive's H2 retains core elements of the original and flushes them with his own distinct style.

Review: The UK's late 90s deep house scene is still a source of inspiration for modern producers, if this collaboration between L'Ateliers and Flavourables is anything to go by. "Sense Of Magic" is a rolling groove, adorned with spacey synths and plaintive keys. It recalls the finest moments from Paper Music's back catalogue. "What I See" is also inspired by the same period, but it opts for a different tact; like Drop Music's dubby, disco sound, it focuses on a tracky groove and the use of an insistent vocal snippet adds to its DJ-friendly feel. Finally, the modestly titled "The Perfect B Side" brings the sound up to date. Featuring a stepping rhythm fused with mournful dubby chords, it sounds like a more introverted take on the approach of new school artists like AnD.

Review: Matt Smallwood clearly understands the importance of selecting and arranging a few compatible elements. The title track starts off with tribal drums, expands to include a walking funk bassline and then breaks into the kind of wide-eyed neon trance riff last heard on MANDY's "Body Language". Its simplicity, as much as its soul, is compelling. The remixers are also no slouches when it comes to effective arranging. Mark Holmes's take is techier, its lithe, crisp rhythm underpinning a sensuous string solo, while Ovi M's version is more rudimentary, but just as effective. Drawing on the original track's tribal drums, it uses a more shuffling rhythm and midway through achieves the requisite hands in the air effect with an enormous filtered build.

Review: The ADE has become one of the most important dates in the international electronic music diary, and if this compilation is anything to go on, it taps into the current musical climate. Sampler contains more than its fair share of loppy house and tribal workouts - contributions from Gabriel Ben and Lee Picton's insane whooshing stand out - but it's the interpretations of classic sounds that really impress the most. Greg Fenton's "Revolver" is a chugging techno groove, its heavy beats underscoring a massive air raid siren. Mark Holmes's dub remix of Tuunee's "I'll be (right there)" is even more intense, with widescreen chords and a massive Resse-style bassline combining for an epic slice of dramatic techno.

Review: There have been countless attempts to revive and reinvent the classic minimal house approach, but Squoid harbour no such pretensions. Instead, Rusty Rabbit treads familiar territory, but does so with such panache that it could have been a first-wave early 00s release. The title track is the highlight, its stripped back rhythm underpinned by a jacking sensibility and the stuttering vocal sample making it sound like classic Dan Bell DJ material. "Gambler" boasts heavier, tribal drums and climaxes to the sound of a soaring bass, while "A Bit Apart" is based on a wiry, elastic bassline - but it's the title track that prevails.

Review: Estonian producer DJ Meri started his career on Bristol-based house imprint NRK, offering up the sort of cosy deep house that appeals to home listeners just as much as sweat-drenched clubbers. Here he unveils his second release for Manchester Underground Music, a drifting vocal deep houser full of icy melodies and twittering electronics. The radio-friendly original is joined by notable remixes from Mark Holmes and Spin Science. The former opts for a big, warm bassline and chunky, snare-heavy beats on his very San Francisco-sounding rub, while the latter throws down a sprightly, heavily electronic rub that rhythmically flits between house and breaks.

Review: Fast-rising UK producer Feral delivers a killer release that's destined to become a late-summer hit. The groove on "Semper Fidelis" is low-slung and subtle, and its gently undulating arrangement plays host to an infectious Spanish guitar riff. Kris James's version dispenses with this element and focuses on a heads-down approach for peak-time clubs. Underpinned by heavy drums, rasping percussion and insistent stabs, it's a well put-together, functional version. However, the remix honours go to Camroc; adding mournful melodies to the original track's plaintive guitar, the arrangement is given a push towards the classic disco-house sound thanks to the use of a gentle yet effective filter.

Spin Science presents Flade
Review: Listening to What What, it's not hard to feel that this is what Timo Maas would have sounded like if he had taken the sound on his "Doom's Night" remix to its logical conclusion. Over a rolling rhythm, Ular Aasmae aka Spin Science drops squelchy, sub-sonic bass licks and leads his arrangement into a filtered-chord breakdown. Clearly, Aasmae has got the art of wobbly, good-time house down to a fine art, because on "It's The Same Old Song", his tribal beats break down to reveal irresistible acid-filled hooks. Nik Feral's version of "Song" is a more serious affair, and its central riff bears a resemblance to a pitched down version of the one used on "French Kiss".

Review: "Let's Smoke" proves that there's still some life left in the minimal sound. However, the strength of this release revolves around the fact that it pushes the sound forward. The original version is based on a rolling, incessant groove, its glitchy percussion belying the track's influences. Joy Kitikonti & Bimas Jr's version opts for a more traditional house sound, underpinned by seductive filters, and Squoid's take favours evil acid licks over the occasional whooshing sound effect. It's only Ben LB's take that looks back, with wave upon wave of white noise and a stuttering rhythm making string reference to techno's recent past
