Review: Following up great releases on Holic Trax, Love Potion and his very own GWM Records, Ukrainian label Manuscript Records presents 10 tracks of classic deep house on this album from Japanese producer Mr Takeshi Fukushima aka Takecha. Voices features soulful and emotive numbers inspired by the glory days of NYC house, such as the deep swing of "FBM", getting off-kilter with the moody soul claps of "Find", then going for a more understated vibe on the late night dub of "Let's Move Around". There's diversity within his repertoire, with the dusty urban sounds of Berlin style MPC house on "Loose Down" and finding a middle ground somewhere between electro and UK broken beat UK "Mr Timemachine".
Review: Next up on Vincent Inc.'s Manuscript Records Ukraine is Peter Mac: an international producer and DJ originally from Canada who resides in Brazil, with previous releases on Kolour, Batavia and M-Sol. His latest offering comes in the form of "Variations" (2021 Version), a slinky and hypnotic excursion through the progressive house sound, with an undeniably balearic tinge to it. Enhancing the track's groove dynamics is remixer Paul Hamilton (Bonzai Progressive/Suffused) who takes the track down a tech house route; it is more upbeat, driven by a funked-up bassline and with stronger syncopated beats.
Review: Russian producer Muteng comes to Ukraine's Manuscript with a varied three-tracker. First up is 'DMMF', which is a housed-up re-edit of The Headhunters' classic 'God Made Me Funky' from back in 1973, and which would slot neatly into deep house and funk/disco sets alike. The EP's other original cut, '4 Gladys', operates in quite different musical territory, topping an ominous synth-bass throb redolent of new beat/EBM (albeit at a house tempo) with what appears to be the acapella version of Gladys Knight's 'Neither One Of Us' from 1972. The package is then completed by a chugging, midtempo remix of 'DMMF' from label boss Vincent Inc - think ALFOS or Beyond The Wizard's Sleeve.
Review: A Dance Mania original G returns. Take one listen to the sweet chords and genius simplicity of tracks like "Economy Of Motion (Vincent Inc Morning mix)" and you can see why his sound and career has not been lost to the ages. Somewhat resurrected by Rush Hour in 2014 with a return EP after a 12 year hiatus, this progenitor of the Chicago house sound has seen a slew of releases make their way back to labels like Pulp, Traxx Underground most recently Vincent Inc's Manuscript. Cruising 120BPM grooves, light chords and sweet pads dominate this EP for the Ukranian label, with plodding basslines giving extra weight to the sunny strands of "Symbiosis" too. Percussive and tribal touches define "Cassandra's Dream" in a cosmic swell of rich and synthy waves that compliment a four-track EP reminding us that a sweet and soft side to Chicago house still lives!
Review: Azeem revisits a 20-year-old collaboration with Attaboy, which first came out on Toko Records back in 1998 and is now re-presented in six brand new mixes. Balaur & Collate maintain the dreamy, dubby feel of the original, while the Baeka Remix strips away layers of sound, letting the soulful vox and garage-y piano shine through. Ivan Fabra's rub is reminiscent of Daft Punk's 'Around The World', the Silly Willy Jacked Out Mix is stuttery and glitchy, Orkus serves up a more 'traditional' deep house pass and then finally the Erhan Yilmaz Mix drops the tempo and takes us into more Balearic, headnoddin' territory.
