Sermon - (7:07) 128 BPM Hot
Deeper - (5:20) 125 BPM
Review: Leeds' Mak & Pasteman are back on the Materials imprint for their seventh instalment of tech-driven house music, and if you're wondering whether this is of the outsider variation then you might be disappointed. However, if you want something effective and banging on the dance floor, then these two are at the top of the UK house/techno game right now. "Sermon" is a full-out fist-pumper, a technoid floor track with a rolling, subtly acidic bassline and some big room drums. "Deeper" says it all in the name, but this techno track is still powerful enough to give any sort of dancer the motivation to move and rave out. Effective DJ tools, right here!

It's Dis - (7:06) 128 BPM Hot
Creep - (5:14) 125 BPM
Review: Mak & Pasteman now have quite the collection of labels under their belt, and previous releases for imprints like Lobster Boy, Sounds Of Sumo and Unknown To The Unknown have elevated their level onto a new category of quality. This new EP is the sixth instalment of the Materials label, which they inaugurated with the 001, and we're not surprised to hear that "It's Dis" is a slick and aggressive techno banger with a familiar, and bass-centric, UK edge. "Creep", on the other hand, offers something odder, more tribalistic and very much in line with the sort of material that is heard across the more experimental of dancefloors nationwide.

Runout - (6:10) 127 BPM Hot
Artifacts - (5:38) 126 BPM

Review: Mak and Pasteman come in strong for Materials' fifth outing, the former having already appeared on a number of labels, while the latter gets his first shot at the big game right here. Very much in line with Mak's versatility, Materials 005 is a true hybrid of an EP, where techno, house and UK bass are mashed up good and proper. Both "The Whale" and "Runout" are carried forwards by a menacing techno beat, but the sonics circling above them could easily be on an acid tune or a heavy dubstep cut. Similarly, "Artefacts" goes for a 4/4 approach, only to be drained and beaten down by a swarm of killer bass. Watch out!

Bald - (4:39) 124 BPM
Drive - (5:51) 131 BPM
Tempest - (5:42) 124 BPM Hot
Granulate - (5:13) 124 BPM
Review: Huddersfield's finest and Rinse FM regulars Mak & Pasteman drop a diverse dance floor record on their own Materials label. Both "Bald" and "Drive" are high-paced techno grooves, shot through with acid lines that sneer and spit their way over tough, thundering drums and pounding rhythms. It's ferocious stuff, but "Tempest" sees them take the pace down a few notches. Inspired by old school house, it revolves around soulful synth hooks and a woozy groove. "Granulate" completes the release; once again, the pair shift focus and the stepping rhythm, lithe breakbeats and evocative stabs sound like an amalgamation of rave, 2-step and grime.

Review: Mak & Pasteman's Materials imprint develops more momentum with this cracking double A from Maison Sky. Hot on the heels of their Rinse outings, MS lay the jack down again with two thundering slappers. "69" is a cross between classic Chicago and early Switch / Jesse Rose material - all uncompromising beats and cheeky vocal snippets. "Dedo's Song" is a much deeper groove; kind of reminiscent of formative Classic outings, the minor key synths and interwoven, slightly dubby textures make for the ultimate immersive heads-down jam.

Review: Roughly two years after they first surfaced with Do The Same on Shifting Peaks, UK bass duo Mak & Pasteman add their names to the long list of artists that run their own label. The reception to releases in the ensuing period for Lobster Boy and Naked Naked have proved that this West Yorkshire pair have a willing audience for such a move and it will be interesting to see if Materials is used solely as a platform for their own work or whether they'll use it to nurture new talent too. Naturally they helm the debut release which brandishes an upfront bass-tech-house hybrid on the A Side in "Jam One", whilst "Formation 131" sees M&P doff their hats to the sound of darkside jungle.
