The Later The Better - (6:48) 120 BPM
The Later The Better (Pete Herbert version) - (6:59) 120 BPM
Review: Having previously plied his trade on Internasjonal Spesial, Tom Tom Disco and Spare Change Disco, Frank Agrario pops up on Glasgow's Maxi Discs. As usual, there's a pleasing looseness about the Bologna-based boffin's productions, with both the percussive, Afro-influenced nu-disco chugger "Balfonic", and altogether bolder "The Later The Better" making great use of analogue synths and live-sounding percussion. The latter features some musical elements that really shouldn't work together - most notably some sleazy, rave-era riffs, tasty piano solo and wonky drum hits - but somehow come together to create a really special track. Pete Herbert offers a smoother, cheerier rework to round off another solid EP from the Italian.

Mekon
Mekon (original version) - (6:03) 114 BPM
Mekon (Pete Herbert & Dicky Trisco version) - (6:02) 114 BPM Hot
Review: Over his short career to date, Peza has attracted some notable DJ support, with Yam Who, Greg Wilson, Andrew Weatherall and Optimo all supporting his releases. Dicky Trisco is a fan, too, and has previously released Peza cuts on Audiodiscotheque. Here he brings him to the Maxi Discs label, unleashing the synth-heavy original production "Mekon". Undoubtedly positive and Balearic in outlook, the track blends electrofunk-era synthesizer motifs and Reverso 68 style saucer-eyed electronics with just the right amount of dancefloor-friendly, Italo-influenced midtempo chug. Pete Herbert and Dicky Trisco once again join forces to provide a notable remix, with the veteran duo emphasizing the track's more chugging elements whilst retaining a tactile, saucer-eyed feel.

Say What You Want

Say What You Want (original version) - (5:29) 119 BPM
Slave To It - (5:43) 120 BPM
Say What You Want (Dicky Trisco version) - (5:44) 119 BPM
Review: Given that he's one of the owners of Maxi Discs - alongside longtime pal and sometime production partner Dicky Trisco - it's perhaps surprising that this is Pete Herbert's first solo single for the label. Amazingly, it's also his first EP under his own name for three years. Naturally, there's plenty to enjoy, from the bouncy nu-disco bass, Italo riffs and rolling disco percussion of "Gang Related", to the Reverso 68 style Balearic nu-disco of "Say What You Want" and bold, anthemic, piano-laden electrofunk rinse-out "Slave To It". Dicky Trisco reworks "Say What You Want", emphasizing the original's Italo-influenced melodies while giving the track a greater dub disco flex.

Dust To Dust (Dicky Trisco version) - (8:56) 115 BPM
Dust To Dust (Pete Herbert version) - (5:29) 115 BPM Hot
Ashes To Ashes (original version) - (6:17) 111 BPM
Review: Given that "Dust to Dust" is coming out on Dicky Trisco and Pete Herbert's Maxi Discs label, we probably shouldn't be surprised that it's a gorgeously positive chunk of sun-flecked Balearic disco/house fusion. The first single from the previously unknown Professor Angel Sound and the 13th Tribe (not to be confused with the Ninja Tune-affiliated artist of the same name), "Dust to Dust" blends bouncy synths, bubbling bass and saucer-eyed melodies with baggy disco grooves and saucy guitars. "Ashes To Ashes" is similarly sun-drenched, though operates at a slower, groovier tempo. Dicky Trisco and Pete Herbert each remix the title track, with the latter's Reverso 68 style interpretation being the EP's undoubted highlight.

Monsieur B (original version) - (6:38) 117 BPM
Monsieur B (Moon Runner version) - (5:58) 118 BPM Hot
Review: Pete Herbert and Dicky Trisco's excellent Maxi Discs label welcomes a new name, debutant producer Campion. It's easy to see why "Another Day" appealed to the pair; with some luscious synths, undulating melodies and cute vocal samples, it has a classic Balearic disco meets deep house vibe. Dicky Trisco opts for a more Italo-infused flex on his remake, accentuating the bubbly synths. "Monsieur B" delivers a tougher deep house flavour, lacing occasional chords and melodies over a rambunctious groove. Moon Runner remixes, offering a stomping but tactile take heavy on Italo rhythms and wide-eyed synth melodies.

Crap Clap (Pete Herbert & Dicky Trisco version) - (6:20) 117 BPM Hot
Review: Following formidable deep house releases on Toytronic and Gazeebo International, Aussie producer Jad Lee pitches up on Dicky Trisco's Maxi Discs label with a decidedly summery EP of modern disco goodness. With its' sequenced synth basslines, disco guitars, warm pads and baggy Balearic feel, "Down To Party" sounds like a more uptempo take on Pete Herbert and Phil Mison's Reverso 68 project. It's perhaps fitting, then, that Herbert remixes, taking the track further into Balearic nu-disco territory. "Crap Clap" is just as much fun, albeit in a more straight up electrofunk-influenced nu-disco vein, while Herbert and Dicky Trisco's remix offers a deeper and groovier alternative.

Colder Boogie

Colder Boogie (Dicky Trisco Hot mix) - (8:19) 113 BPM
Colder Boogie (Pete Herbert version) - (6:37) 115 BPM Hot
Review: Brighton's Alphabet City is clearly destined for the nu-disco premier league if he keeps dropping bombs like this! "Colder Boogie" is a gloriously mournful mid-tempo electro-house yearner that swaggers along in a melancholic stupor - evoking memories of awesome Noughties Belgian labels like Strobe or Suicide. Dicky Trisco meanwhile, steps in, puts an arm round its shoulder, says 'cheer up mate' and takes it out dancing where there's music and lights and lots of pretty girls. Pete Herbert also delivers a mix that's cleverly somewhere in between the previous two. Hot stuff!

My House - (7:14) 125 BPM
My House (Pete Herbert & Dicky Trisco version) - (7:48) 125 BPM
Review: It must be tricky being Dicky Trisco. We've lost count of the number of labels under his management, but it must be in double figures by now. Maxi Discs, one of his original imprints, has recently enjoyed something of a renaissance. "Discomagnifique" is arguably the label's best for a while. The title track bristles with piano-laden Balearic disco positivity, a feeling confirmed by the thrilling retro-house rework from Pete Herbert. Accompanying track "My House" is pretty tasty, too, delivering a late '80s groover that's propelled forwards by heavy synth bass and twinkling synths. Peter Herbert and Dicky Trisco remix, adding some touchy-feely deepness to proceedings.

House Track Two (original version) - (5:25) 116 BPM
House Track Two (Dicky Trisco version) - (6:03) 116 BPM
Review: Mexican duo Moon Runner deliver their strongest EP to date, this time for Dicky Trisco and Pete Herbert's Maxi Discs imprint. "House Track One" has a New York '87 feel to it, all dubbed out proto-house riffs, chunky beats, twittering synth flutes and neat boogie touches. Mr Herbert remixes, adding some Balearic (or possibly Adriatic) flavour alongside a thunderous synth bassline. "House Track Two", meanwhile, goes deeper and dubbier whilst retaining the same proto house vibe, sounding not unlike an early Paul Simpson house production with a slightly tighter groove. An excellent package concludes with Dicky Trisco's bouncy, piano laden re-cut.

Glow Of Filter & Dub
Glow Of Filter & Dub (original version) - (9:59) 120 BPM Hot
Love Gun (6th Borough Project version) - (7:40) 116 BPM
Glow Of Filter & Dub (Dicky Trisco version) - (5:57) 120 BPM
Review: This latest audio missive from Glasgow's Maxi Discs label could certainly be described as Balearic. In its original form, "Glow Of Filter & Dub" flits between heavy, afro-influenced percussion sequences and moments of sunny, almost blissful electronic riffery. It's a combination that works brilliantly, ensuring that "Glow Of Filter & Dub" delivers both dancefloor thrills and sublime, eyes-closed moments. 6th Borough Project take the track even further towards eyes-closed Balearic deep house territory on their excellent rework, while Maxi Discs regular Dicky Trisco goes for a low-slung dub disco vibe on his no-nonsense take. It all adds up to one of Maxi Discs' strongest releases to date.

Sleeping Giant (Dicky Trisco version) - (7:10) 108 BPM
Sleeping Giant (original version) - (6:54) 108 BPM
Review: The Discondments, known to mothers and others as Birmingham duo Lee Fisher and Paul Kaminski, demonstrate their growing panache for original production with a debut release for Pete Herbert's Maxi imprint. "Sleeping Giant" begins at a languid pace, but once the bassline unfurls to latch onto the slo mo beat it's a satisfying experience complemented by the dash of vintage house strings that appear towards the end. Up next, Pete Herbert reworks the track into a pacier disco not house bump that's heavy on the additional synths whilst Dicky Trisco opts to add some weight to the beat on a dubbier, cosmic effort.

Hot July (original version) - (6:20) 122 BPM
Hot July (Pete Herbert version) - (7:19) 122 BPM
Review: As a bitingly cold English February draws to a snowy close, Ajello bring a cocktail shaped piece of summer with "Hot July." Maxi Discs has been on a steep ascent to notoriety since their birth in 2008 courtesy of their inimitable tropical house sounds. Their fourth release is no different, offering three tracks that will have you stripped off to just your underwear and sunglasses (with heating whacked up to full blast).

Italian production duo, Ajello who are friends of the burgeoning label are on hand for this release. They bring with them a highly danceable piece of feel good disco-house music. Fresh from working with Fred Ventura, Luca Roccatagliati and Fabrizio Tavernelli return with some piano-driven fusion of old school house and funky disco. Merging this sound with their Italian influences, the pair manage to blend a modern sound with an old feel, giving the track an instant classic vibe. Its sunny disposition warms up every dancefloor it reaches, the only drag being that it's not warm enough yet to have this one belting outside.

Two remixes from Marius and Pete Herbert surround the original here. Marius opens proceedings with his shinning, New York influenced remix. Reminiscent of the city's infamous Studio 54 but also keeping the European and Italian flavour, this is one for the warehouses - guaranteed to get any large, sweaty space moving. Closing the release is Maxi Discs owner, Pete Herbert who strips the track down and adds a chunky, UK style house bassline that adds a 90s style to groove, perfect for the dancefloor.

Another solid release from Maxi Discs, they seem to have mastered the art of rounding up the sort of disco and house that gets people on their feet and dancing. An exciting label to keep an eye on, the future is set to hold some big moments from Maxi Discs.
