Review: There's plenty of breezy summer warmth on this split four-tracker from the ever-reliable Melbourne Deepcast camp. Andy Hart joins forces with Max Graef on opener "Super Strain", the aural equivalent of a stroll down the banks of the Yarra River at dusk, all squinting horns, shuffling grooves and woozy party atmos. Graef's "Sensation" continues on a similar theme, thickening the percussion and adding some tipsy, bluesy chords for added humid, late night effect. M5K opts to drop the tempo and prioritize vintage, new age synths on the intoxicating "Moon Vexed", while The Tortoise brilliantly blends deep house, nu-disco and soft-focus soul on "The Real Thing".

Review: Craig McWhinney's reputation has largely been built on releases that blur the boundaries between stripped-back techno and melodic tech-house. Here, he pops up on Melbourne Deepcast with something altogether deeper. "Heavy Stemmed" is as hypnotic and bewitching as his previous work, but the action revolves around a stuccato deep house rhythm and tumbling vocal samples that are pure late night deep house. The fluid, driving "Flow"moves back towards pure techno territory, retaining an air of deep house wooziness thanks to some drowsy chords. Weekend Express go all Lone-meets-Medlar on their cheery remix of "Heavy Stemmed", while the ever-impressive Mic Newman caps an all Australian affair by delivering another excellent remix in his inimitable nu-disco-meets-deep house style.

Review: Victoria's finest come together to launch the Melbourne Deepcast imprint, proving that there's much more to the city than great coffee. Up first is Lewie Day - perhaps better known to the record buying public as Tornado Wallace - who drops the immensely pleasing soulful mid tempo bump of "Some Kind Of Man", a sample-heavy house jam that has been receiving a lot of love on the Juno office turntable. This is followed by "Devoted", an effort from MD head honcho Andy Hart that shimmers with Motor City soul - watch out for those keys! Up next there's some eagerly anticipated new tackle from Fantastic Man, with the deep groove/low slung riffage of "From Start To Finish" sounding like a snug fit for the 6th Borough Project back cat, while Weekend Express's "Deeper" bristles with vintage Chicago vibes. An auspicious debut.
