Review: It's collabo time! Metalheadz mysterious Sonar's Ghost links up with a few old friends for five slabs of incendiary, ice cold slammage. Outrage (AKA Nomine), Acid Lab and Scale are all involved and the goods are nothing but high grade. Each cut hits hard and tickles the deepest corners and quarters of your soul but special highlights include the glacial tension and funk of 'Echoes' (with Scale), the jazzier twists and turns of 'Mindrumming' and 'Even So' (both with Outrage) and the beautiful horn weaving futurism of 'Is Jazz Is' with Acid Lab. What a crucial collection.

Kingdom
Kingdom - (4:36) 173 BPM Hot
Reunion - (5:11) 58 BPM
Diligence - (4:50) 57 BPM
Review: Digital & Outrage, both of whom are in possession of long-term jungle pedigrees, are landing on Headz with an absolutely classic release, one which takes the rough jungle history of the label and retains all the best bits whilst stretching it over a modern, up to date framework. The title tune is the standout, as filtered breaks ooze class through its eerie, suspenseful introductory soundscapes; it's the calm before the storm, and the drop unleashes a thunderous array of sub-heavy basslines and stepping breaks, an instant bass-face tune. 'Reunion' rolls out the breaks in a manner reminiscent of Mikal or the late Andy Skopes, and 'Diligence' is just pure flames. Absolutely top class.

Dimensions - (6:02) 57 BPM
Monkey Man - (6:02) 172 BPM
Trojan (feat SR) - (6:02) 172 BPM
Review: Jem One is back and so are Headz, following the unbelievable Mikal album the other week. Jem One lies in a similar lane production wise and his sound is still sounding as fresh as ever, with deep rollers and rough bits of breaks work laying around all over the shop. The Rain ripples with analogue sounds and the influences of hardware are clear, especially on the acid influenced pads and fills of 'Trojan', which drops into a distorted main bassline that's edgy in thee extreme. The bassline on 'Sunday Rain' also deserves a special mention, whilst the percussive elements of 'Dimensions' are absolutely fantastic. What a release.

In A Lifetime - (7:02) 174 BPM
Break The Rules - (6:28) 172 BPM
Polar Dreams - (6:30) 172 BPM
Review: HLZ is one of the most consistent purveyors of rolling damage around, and in the last few years has unleashed a stunning series of EPs on scene-leader Metalheadz. The Italian-born producer is back with Amethyst, another drum-focused, gritty piece of music that relies on the barebone essentialls to do the talking. There are diamonds among the rough and 'Amethyst' exemplifies his sonic approach perfectly; its whispering waves of synthy leads build and rise, breaking on the drop into a skipping, bouncy arrangement that's as infectious as it is creative. There's junglist mayhem on 'Break The Rules', and 'Polar Dreams' ties up the EP perfectly, with clattering drums and pummeling walls of low frequency energy. Unstoppable.

Ubiquitous EP
Ubiquitous - (5:14) 174 BPM Hot
Isiah - (5:15) 58 BPM
Boogaloo Shoo - (3:54) 174 BPM
Deus Ex - (4:58) 174 BPM
Review: Phaction is back on Metalheadz for his sophomore EP and oh baby, it's a banger. Hearing the evolution of his sound over the last couple of years has been a pleasure and his graduation from a mostly liquid artist into something much broader is audibly complete. Ubiquitous is a title track worthy of such a milestone and it represents his talents perfectly, as a twisting myriad of synths wind through the arrangement with the precision and speed of a hawk; they're just as deadly, and even more pointed. The other three tunes land in breaksier territory, as 'Boogaloo Shoo' grinds itself onto a stone of pyramidic shapes and patterns, whilst 'Deus Ex' and 'Isiah' are biblical in their scope and force. Big, big sounds.

Review: Fresh from collaborating with Ulterior Motive and Jubei, Tyrone steps up with his first full solo EP for the label and it's yet another level up. Four hurricanes compounded in tune form, "Lunar City" rips the floor from beneath you with its booming sub and Marcus-esque raising sense of tension, "Heaton Dramaz" takes the technoid turbine factor to a whole new hair-raising level while "Warriors" kicks hard with a soundsystem vibe that hits all the spots Digital does. Finally "Eyes" close the EP with some soul-shattering breaks and a humanised textures from the stars. Massive.

Black Lotus/Opium Den
Black Lotus - (6:06) 57 BPM
Opium Den - (6:13) 170 BPM Hot
Review: Toronto business: Jesta and Gremlinz continue their fine line of collaborations with their powerful return to Metalheadz. Following fusions on the likes of Paradox, Warm Comms, Holotype and Headz last year with "Empty Promises", the duo return with two oceanic slabs. "Black Lotus" lives up to its name. Rare, refined and darker and more claustrophobic than a night down a well, there's no climbing out of this one when it's dropped; expect full hypnosis. "Opium Den" flips for a more cosmic expedition. Trippy, dreamy, loose, hazy and laced with schizophrenic breaks, if this doesn't light your inner poppy seed not a lot will...

Review: 2019 ain't ready... Metalheadz are just one month into the year and already they've dropped an album of absurd head-scratching proportions as Iceland break veteran Agzilla drops his debut album. Sprawling across the tempos but maintaining and adventurous, dense vibe throughout, Aggy takes us from necksnapping breaks to sultry triphop and all shades in between. Highlights include the mid 90s trippiness of "Homefront", the star gazing steppy cosmic jungle of "Lattice", the Burialesque loin-girding harmonics and haziness of "Sacramental Act" and the pure psychedelic odyssey that is "Steppin In The Cold". A genuinely sublime curveball from the perennially on-point Headz. Essential.

Contrafiction - (5:12) 60 BPM
Reneri (Kid Drama remix) - (6:01) 57 BPM Hot
Reneri - (5:05) 180 BPM
Review: Two things you probably already know but just in case... Firstly, Metalheadz strictly deal absolute premium albums. Secondly, Agzilla is an Icelandic OG and has been on this since D&B was hip hop. With these facts in mind, you already know the forthcoming album is going to be essential before you even press play. But press play anyway, because you won't be disappointed. "Contrafiction" is a moody Detroity stomper that rolls at a menacing 120 BPM with devilishly dark bass tones while DLR and Mako focus on the striking piano chords for a killer OneMind remix. "Reneri" is another one of Agzilla's moodier, slower jams. Once again it takes a strong technoid twang and once again it's been given an obscenely on point D&B remix from the one and only Kid Drama. Cats Can Hear Ultrasound... And you can hear what an amazing album Agzilla has made very very soon

Black Label - (6:22) 167 BPM
Baretta - (5:50) 138 BPM
Prototype - (5:37) 55 BPM
Review: Labels in D&B don't get much more prestigious than Metalheadz Platinum and the most prized iteration of Goldie's genre-defining imprint has seen some of the most well-known releases of all time pass through its doors. This time around's the turn of Fanu to contribute to this history and he's certainly done it in style, namely a four-tracker full of breaks and basses that smacks of the glory days. 'Recharge' is twisting and serpentine; 'Black Label' rough and unforgiving; 'Baretta' atmospheric and pounding; 'Prototype' clean and driving. If you're into the old-school Metalheadz sound you'll find it difficult not to love this release, just as we are.

Review: Pow! Barely a month has passed since their almighty "Born Again" EP and Survival & Script's Scar project returns with another clutch of crucial cuts. Once again it's all about the groove, gritty textures and cheeky surprises... Including a rolling 140 breaks version of "Out Of Perspective" which hits with low slung ravey gusto. Elsewhere "Follow Me" is a white knuckle pace with a precision vocal wrapped tightly around the fills while "One Of Our Own" has a riff so cheekily off beat you feel a bit woozy listening to it. Very few acts are making D&B as thoroughly and thoughtfully as Scar right now.

Review: Detboi strikes again! Fast becoming one of Metalheadz' most consistent killers, every single EP he's dropped on the label since 2016's "Joyride" has crushed it and if anything he's getting sharper and heavier as he develops deeper into 170 territory. Exploring and subverting the original mentasm textures, icy atmospheres and uncompromised horror-bass, each cut is essential listening and playing but highlights include the skin-melting momentum on "Ice Cold", the 24th century jazz subtleties of "Groovedigger" and the savage staccato steps and stabs of "Beast". Obscenely true to the craft.

Review: Danger danger, high Voltage: one of the most prolific and consistent men in the game continues to assault the game as he levels up to board the Metalheadz mothership. Five tracks in total, each one flagrantly showcasing how rich his references and skills are: "Hold Tight" is all about jazzy touches, "Losing" is straight up star-gazing soul, "Out Of Luck" is all about the melancholic hypnosis, "Mood Swings" plays a deft game of contrast and shade with Hidden Agenda style flurries over some classic breaks while "Never Ready" closes the deal with an iced-out dark side rampage that couldn't be more Headz if it chomped your arm off with gold teeth. Moody as hell.

Review: Man of the moment Benny L has had an incredible rise over the last two years, guided and nurtured by Ram Trilogist and Audioporn founder Shimon, Benny's groaning, rumbling basslines have become a benchmark that sit right up there with Serum and Voltage as the best in the contemporary game. Case in point: "Low Blow", a tune that's been unavoidable at festivals throughout the summer and famously made Goldie pull the best bass faces the Mixmag live stream has ever seen. It's backed by three other crucial rollers: the iced-out Headz homage "Route Zero", the thunder-striking drum-shattering "Hold It Down" and the whirlwind sense-zapper "Home." Four absolutely crucial cuts from one of this year's most essential rising drum & bass stars.

Phil Tangent - "Bardabunga" - (5:34) 174 BPM Hot
Crossing The Rubicon - (6:02) 172 BPM
Played by: Loz Contreras
Review: Metalheadz take their first bite out of 2017 with an on-point two-tracker from two of the UK's sharpest D&B minds. Phil Tangent cuts the first slice of bass cake with a deep and breezy timeless roller; "Bardabunga" is driven by pensive detuned synth tones on the riff and powered by swift, skippy Bladerunner style breaks. Pennygiles joins the fray for "Crossing The Rubicon". A precision balanced creation of shades; one minute we're floating in beatless suspension. The next we're in Gully City. Population: YOU.

Review: The enigmatic concept that is Beta 2 returns to his spiritual home with four more stark soundscapes. "Black Dahlia" takes the lead with its lolloping brown papered double bassline and jazzy, hip-shaking flurries. "Speckled Dots" retains that jazz sentimentality with psychedelic blasts on the fills but a much grittier bottom foundation. Deeper into the EP and we're destined for more cosmic pastures as both "The One That Got Me" and "Slide" take us on a trip to much further D&B planetary systems on Photek-style rockets. Delectably futurist.

Review: Metalheadz apply the breaks as longstanding bass-smith Detboi delivers four gnarly 130 steppers that carry all the chilling, iced-out futurist signatures of Metalheadz but done within a slower, more spaced out context. From the haunted thoughts of Goldie whispering through the dense fogs of "Joyride" to the paranoia-twanging bass rises on "All I Need" and the stop-start stutters of "Get On Up" this is a remarkable EP that compounds the rumours that breaks really are coming back... And this time they're serious. Exceptional.

Memories Of You - (5:55) 57 BPM
Pache - (5:33) 170 BPM
Played by: Soul Intent
Review: Heritage heavyweight SB81 returns with some serious Nolige. Three tracks deep, each one whisking us through a different era of jungle history: "90s" captures that heady switch from hardcore techno to jungle techno, all 92-era breaks so swampy and dense in the mix it creates instant pressure. "Memories Of You" quickly switches us through to 94/95, when Omni Trio, Goodlooking and Peshay ruled the roost, firing off microscopic funk lazers over crisp two-steps. "Pache" closes the show on a Doc Scott/Digital vibe. Mid 90s soundsystem music designed for no other reason but to lose your face to. All executed without so much as a dewy eye, SB81 knows what time it is.

Directive (feat Mikal) - (4:57)
Review: Wow! The Metalheadz Platinum series returns after an absence of some time and they do so in style with a label debut for D&B talent Xtrah. Londoner Yasin Elgohary first made a splash under the name Xtrah with Arise, a 12" for Subtitles back in 2011 that brandished a title cut that Goldie licensed for his Fabric mix. Roll on three years and a bunch of taut apocalyptic rollers for the likes of Symmetry, Critical and SGN:LTD and Xtrah finally arises on Metalheadz! "No Good" showcases Xtrah's talent for technically skilled productions filled with musicality, with the main vocal perfectly summing up the vibe here. "Directive" meanwhile is a soundclash between Xtrah and Mikal, as tightly wound drum fills test the snaking bassline to the max.

Solar 9 (feat Redeyes) - (5:36) Hot
Review: Hailing from the Motor City and with noticeable Detroit techno influences in his productions, Sinistarr brings a refreshing twist to bog standard drum & bass with his latest release on the legendary Metalheadz label. Although experimental and somewhat quirky, A-Side "Mainstay" is far from being exclusively home listening and certainly deserves a place on the dancefloor. On the flip, "Solar 9" features French DJ/producer Redeyes and is a much more abstract, radical offering. Much like Marmite "you either love it or hate it" and frankly, like Marmite, we love it! With a mish-mash of one-shot samples, stabs and hits and an odd sounding vocal snippet declaring "you can't tell us how to play our music, you can't tell us how to play our sound", it's a miracle that it all gels together, but it does, and well!

Review: Marking his third release for 2011, the Dutch master and Metalheadz signing Lenzman gets an official airing on the Metalheadz Platinum imprint. "Masquerade" sees him pair uplifting Hospital sounding melodies with soulful, murmuring "By Your Side" style vocals, a chiming classic house sounding riff and buckets of warm, caressing bass. The Die, Interface & William Cartwright trio (who we last saw on Clearskyz classic "Bright Lights" last year) combine forces to provide a more straight-forward, more stripped back Bristol roller in manner of Break.
