Review: Released last year after a long lockdown incubation, Scar's third album Road Less Travelled was one of Metalheadz most notable LPs in recent times, proving once again that Survival and Script are an certified album act who can whip up epic narratives without losing any dancefloor punch. Here they remind us once again with a series of VIPs from themselves and friends such as Zero T and Nookie. Highlights include the sweeping thunderous sub on 'Losing Your Mind', the slippery, bad ass space funk twist on the VIP of 'Conductor' and Artificial Intelligence's creepy flip of 'Caterpillar'. Keep it scenic.

Review: Black Barrel's been a busy boi! Currently flexing on Dispatch and Headz, not to mention his hyperactive Leo Cap dubstep alias, this man's a machine and has been for some years now. The best thing is that the quality is always consistent. Four more cases in point: the hurricane soul and eerie emotion of 'Side That You Can't Hide', the rattling airy drums and subtle rave references of 'Love Line', the deep smouldering soul of 'New Era' and the timeless Soul:r style finale 'One Day'. There's no hiding from vibes like these.

Goldie & SB81 - "Rockstar 81" - (7:02) 170 BPM Hot
SB81 - "Lights Out" - (5:47) 172 BPM
Review: In the seventh installment of Metalheadz' '25 Years Of' celebration series, SB81 (Shaun Bateman) takes the spotlight with two exceptional tracks that are given a well-deserved retrospective. The first, a collaboration with Goldie called 'Rockstar 81', boasts dirty reese basslines and expertly swung breaks that make for a weighty mix capable of shaking even the stars from their orbits. The second track, 'Lights Out', features Reese buzzes and straighter beats interwoven with dreamy synths, resulting in a mesmerizing soundscape that will leave listeners spellbound.

Review: Following his recent slew of slap-abouts on Requisite Music, man like Friske returns to the Metalheadz mothership with 'Supplier'. Five cuts deep, each one charging us into the future with hands off the wheel and no seatbelt on, 'Supplier' sees Friske tapping into his Renegade Hardware roots with uncompromised and unabashed technoid fusion. Highlights include the deep space bass and industrial drums of the title track, the jazzier introspection of 'Street Lights' and the brain melting drum science of 'Fall Back'. Take it higher with 'Supplier'

Coded Warehouse (feat Deviant) - (5:50) 57 BPM
Review: This joint release by Inner Terrain and Wreckless is classic Headz from start to finish. The drums are perfect, the basses gargle with other-worldly aggression and the textural quality of every element is daubed in underground material. The title track is an ideal example, as a monotonous and hugely entertaining introduction needles into your soul, a foreboding prelude to a drop that's indistinct and spaced out, the focus here isn't on pure adrenaline but the construction of a journey through industrial soundscapes. 'Big Drama' is one of the dancefloor-facing cuts available, with a suspenseful build that collapses into the sheer ecstasy of punching stabs and shuddering frequencies.

Mirror Image - (6:25) 175 BPM
Response & Pliskin - "The Pusher" - (7:02) 175 BPM
Review: This debut EP from Response goes back to the classic Headz formula; honest drums, basslines that won't quit and stripped back sense of purity. It's more barebones and relaxed than the label's recent work and it's a flip that works extremely well, as Response rolls things out with a feeling of careless abandon. That's not to say there isn't toughness on here, however, as 'Manhunter' pushes growling bass barks underneath an outer layer of crisp hi-hats and back alley snare hits. 'Betrayal' is space-age, Bukem-style luxury, a panoramic journey through celestial tones that makes you feel lighter than air; this is proper liquid. An all-round masterclass!

Drum Trip (Detboi's Low Ends & Amens remix) - (6:03) 191 BPM
Jupiter (2021 Rebuild) - (6:16) 159 BPM
Review: Metalheadz's march towards twenty five years continues, as does their revisitation and exploration of back catalogue classics, with a twist. Episode number three takes the furious sounds of Kaotic Chemistry's 'Drum Trip' and 'Jupiter' and reworks them, with production courtesy of Detboi, Madcap, Wheeler and Kaotic Chemistry themselves. Madcap's take on 'Drum Trip' is clean and precise, with a rolling drum break that builds through a gorgeous reece line for an instantly classic sound, one that's tied with the Metalheadz aesthetic both past and present. Detboi makes two contributions, and it's his Low Ends and Amens take on 'Drum Trip' that impresses most, with the rhythmic diversity he's become known for on full display, and Detboi sprints through downtempo breaks, stuttering claps and rusty percussive textures in his quest to create something with moodiness at its core. Finally, Kaotic Chemistry themselves turn 'Jupiter' into a fractious version of its former self, one which perfectly straddles the divide between jungle experimentalism and modern toughness. Seminal.

Folding Water (feat Artilect) - (6:52) 172 BPM

Review: If you like your drum & bass packed with eerie soundscapes and created more with the intention of imparting an experience than packing out a dancefloor, this is the EP for you. It's classic moody Headz, and Quartz channels the hazy smoke-filled vibe of Blue Note and pumps it through an apocalyptic filter, transposing classical breaks onto futuristic landscapes. 'Folding Water' is perhaps the EP's darkest outing, as hypnotic kicks ground a steampunk aesthetic of churning metal and furious percussive energy, one with abstraction at its core but traditional breaks music in its heart. Superb release.

Up All Night (remastered) - (7:48) 175 BPM
Up All Night (Data 3 remix) - (6:33) 175 BPM Hot
Up All Night (remastered - Epic mix) - (9:18) 174 BPM
Review: There are few intros as iconic as that of John B's 'Up All Night'. It's the tune which launched the career of drum & bass' glitter adorned, pop fusion superstar, and what a way to make an entrance. Featherweight flutters and foreboding stabs aside, this three-tracker presages a broader 25 Years of Metalheadz release that will surely be one of the year's best, a part-nostalgia, part-future looking release that charts the history of drum & bass' most seminal imprint. 'Up All Night' gets a 2021 remastered relick, whilst Data 3 step up and flip proceedings on their head with a deeply techy, superbly engineered dancefloor remake that's been blowing up the virtual and physical dance for some time now. Finally, John's 'Epic Mix' stretches out the intro and amps up the suspense, as clattering breaks cement his place in the history books. Utterly superb.

No Choice - (4:54) 172 BPM
Lie Detection - (4:53) 173 BPM
Review: Oh gosh. Last spotted on the mothership label in 2015 on Mikal's "Where They At EP", Danger Dutchman Nymfo returns to Metalheadz with his first full EP for the label. It's every bit as heavy and badass as you'd hope it to be. "Sting Blade" rolls out with a skinny-fit break and a bassline so flabby and bulbous it folds over the edges. It's backed by two more monoliths; "What's Happening" sees fellow Dutchy Martyn join the action with just a touch of classic Blue Note style jazziness, "No Choice" settles the matter on some 23rd century twisted Optical style funk and "Lie Detector" shuts things down on a deep purring emotional one. Incredible. Easily one of Nymfo's finest moments so far (which is saying something).

Review: After such a massive year in 2019 with their 25th anniversary celebrations, you could forgive Metalheadz if they took their foot off the gas for a second as we hurtle into a new decade. But no, if anything they're ramping up again. And Adred's debut album is proof. From that introductory headbutt of a tune "Amenity" right through to the turbo-charged emotions and floatiness of the finale "Left Behind", the longstanding NYC artist has created a monster of a debut album here. Dedicated to his father, featuring the likes of Commix, DRS, Jamal, Strategy, Dave Owen and exploring every shade, style and sound that's inspired and drove him for the last 16 years of production, Adred has delivered a quintessential Headz album here. Essential.

Review: New York's Adred returns to Metalheadz with two outstanding cuts right here. Both of which feature some major league collaborations, too. The wonderfully deep "Valley Groove" takes the lead with Commix on board; dreamy, purring and laced with just a smidgeon of hazy jazzy undertones, it's a total lesson in restraint. "Stuck In Loop" (with Ant TC1) maintains the soulful tendencies but with much more of a barbed touch as DRS lays down his lyrical raw emotion. Both are absolutely stunning.

Review: Phaction is without a doubt one of the most talented producers in D&B at the moment, with a genuinely diverse back catalogue and a talent for deftness that's unmatched by many. This is his debut EP on the legendary Metalheadz and it sees him taking his sound in a darker direction, away from the usual liquid haunts and into proper Headz territory. The title track shows that right from the off, a barrelling mix of wispy sampling and forceful back end construction. 'Aviatrix' seems him returning to business with past collaborator Riya in hugely atmospheric fashion, rumbling sound-scapes abound and grating basses fill in the gaps for a tune that walks the boundary between light and dark. Definitely the highlight of an outstanding release.

Review: If you thought you knew what to expect by now from the Need For Mirrors fellas, just wait until you hear this. Reformatting their sound into dangerously sleek, streamlined compositions, this release takes influences from classic club styles and the darker end of the D&B spectrum. "Sacred Heart" itself is a breathtaking little number, managing to warp a standard roller into something special with vocals that could have been sliced off the top of a '90s garage cut and crispy production cinching in the bass and kicks. It's tight. "Beams" takes a lighter approach, drifting elegantly by with a tasty rattle on the hi-hat for good measure. "Pow Wow" switches up the techy vibes and "Disdain" gets dark and moody for a dance floor-driven stomp. Finally the beautifully old school "Red Shift" pushes a neat, spaced-out sound. A late entry but surely one of the EPs of the year.

Review: Jim Coles has previously spoken about this second Om Unit full length being "a nod to the sound" of his "teenage self". Given the fact that he's rediscovered his jungle and hip hop roots in recent years, it's an accurate description. The fact that he's also mined Goldie's sample archive to help create the sound of Inversion is also telling. While it's not a straightforward jungle set - there are plenty of wonky moments, skewed downtempo interludes, footwork influences and trips into expansive IDMterritory - the skittish breaks, foreboding noises and murky textures all scream classic D&B. It adds a little spice to an already excellent set, delivering a range forward-thinking tracks with their roots firmly in the past.

Review: If you thought you were in for a treat with a brand new Jubei tune to rinse, just how much better did your day get when you found out dBridge was in on the action? A deep, dark, filthy rumbler of a track, "These Things" VIP was made especially for underground dancefloors in the dead of winter. Artificial Intelligence follows up with "Dillirious" VIP which looks to be one of the pair's most aggressively roof-raising releases in recent memory. Packed with punchy snares and a big, menacing bassline that just keeps on uncoiling from a tight mid-range of Tesla coil effects, it's the best conclusion to two perfect VIPs hammered out of two already damn good tracks.

Review: This little beauty is a reminder of what gorgeous things lie just out of view of the norm. Arp XP has been creating weighty, but magical drum and bass for a good few years now. "Good Old Days" shows just how finessed his already clean and sophisticated sound has become, working perfectly in sync with HLZ to create a modern Med masterpiece. HLZ's solo effort "Gaia" punches in some dark minimalism lightened by passing ripples of melody, later ripping apart the peace with a terrorising bassline. ArpXP returns for "Makes Me Wonder" with Brazilian player Nitri, who's forsaken the bongos for real, own-to-earth Metalheadz old-school. We like. We like a lot.

Review: Since signing Bournemouth duo Ulterior Motive to his Metalheadz imprint last year, Goldie has acted as a kind of mentor, supervising the recording of this debut album. In many ways, it makes a lot of sense; Ulterior Motive's brand of jungle-influenced drum and bass no doubt appeals to the producer-turned-celebrity's rave sensibilities. The Fourth Wall is a confident and engaging debut, with spangling, piano-laden rave moments - see the early '90s revivalism of "Tape Pack" - nestling side by side with dark, twisted rollers and deeper, more experimental fare. It's this latter strand - and most particularly the James Sutherland collaboration "Muted" - that makes The Fourth Wall such an impressive debut.

Review: Metalheadz South Coast correspondents Ulterior Motive are gearing up to unleash their debut LP The Fourth Wall, and it's about time too! Despite being only two tracks deep, this sampler does well to show the forthcoming album's broadest range and will whet appetites for The Fourth Wall. "Tape Pak" is an instant love letter to the early 90s rave foundations, but written by pen and paper from 2039. "Muted", meanwhile, is wholly contemporary with its deep spacious groove, techno-like attitude and dBridge-style vocals from James Sutherland.

Speculate/Autumn/Dark Venture
Speculate - (6:26) 173 BPM Hot
Autumn - (6:06) 172 BPM
Dark Venture - (5:44) 172 BPM
Review: London-based Friske is a soundscapist to be reckoned with. Conjuring eerie soundtracks grounded in retro sci-fi and apocalyptic visions of the future, "Speculate" builds storm clouds of drama over simplistic breaks. "Autumn" continues the sparsely-lit scene, ramping up the reverb and placing beauty in the form of light, airy keys and synths over big swampy bass. Sparkling with invention, there are samples and playful interludes cut through - listen out. Final tune "Dark Venture" picks up on the weighty vibes "Autumn" briefly left behind for a bit of tech-influenced fun behind the drum pads. Playing to his hip-hop favour this track owes its menace to crackled, on-point breaks with sinister input from whirling atmospherics. A massive release from a producer to watch.

2nd Page/NOD/Time Traveller
2nd Page (feat Steo) - (5:47) 174 BPM Hot
NOD - (6:23) 174 BPM
Time Traveller (feat Steo) - (5:21) 140 BPM
Review: Unlike his more prolific counterparts on the scene, Beta 2 has been working away quietly and sporadically over the past few years, spreading his talents sparsely but effectively, like a stealth bomber. With a timeless quality only a few producers manage to evoke, his tracks always bring the glory years of D&B to mind, transitioning smoothly from 1994 to 2004 to 2014 in the blink of an eye. "2nd Page" is a masterpiece in smooth, swaying drum and bass, picking up swooning strings as it rolls past. Second track "NOD" is made of harder stuff, with rough breaks and empty, minimal atmosphere. Moving into techier territory, "Time Traveller" takes beats most familiar to fans of the likes of Burial and Four Tet, speeds them up and sends them on their way with a gorgeously soothing rumble of velvety bass and soaring atmospherics. A true gem.

DLR & Mako - "Your Mind" - (7:24) 58 BPM Hot

DLR - "Sense Of Wanting" - (5:57) 172 BPM
DLR & Mako - "Seek Knowledge" (feat Rider Shafique) - (7:18) 172 BPM
DLR - "Outbound" (bonus track) - (6:33) 173 BPM
Review: Let's jump right in: DLR and Mako together on first track "Your Mind" is a beautiful thing. Waves of old school breaks move effortlessly under a calming wash of sound and bass playfully bubbles beneath the surface. This is next level D&B. As lovely as it is to hear Dirty LeeRoy making peace with the world though, it's also fantastic to hear him get down and filthy in huge tunes like "10 Steps" and "Sense Of Wanting". Mako returns for the lush and dubby "Outbound" and finally Rider Shafique joins the clan to add sultry speculation onto dark, dubbed-out "Seek Knowledge", which itself is a beautiful collection of skittering snares, breathy brass and scraped, scarred synth impacts. A stunning release.

Review: With his place amongst the drum & bass community very much established thanks to a series of releases as Nolige, West Midlands producer Shaun Bateman signalled a new stage in his production trajectory with the SB81 project. The Blueprints EP is his second outing for the METHXX series from Metalheadz and it opens with a jagged sting of pure and unadulterated future jungle with the title track. "Blueprints" really showcases this producer's talent for twisting out interesting new rhythms from classic breaks and is complemented by some truly vicious sub bass. Elsewhere SB81 revisits previous production "Four Tun", sliding the tempo gauge up to 170 and easing the mood from dark to hopeful which contrasts nicely with the haywire half time headnodders delight that is final cut "Arq".

MIR - (5:13) 172 BPM Hot
Given Contact - (5:51) 172 BPM
Review: And now for something completely different. Ulterior Motive offer up the goods for Metalheadz, picking apart the bones of the D&B releases that have gone before them this year to create the noisiest, most industrial minimal track in existence. Paring back the instrumentation leaves "MIR" with just killer drums, and rolling bass holding together nightmarishly stressy pads and a punchy sample repeating our only instruction: "Let it roll." For a fix of ungodly heaviness, "Given Contact" is the ultimate combination of on-point production with behemoth-shaped bass, destroying speakers in its wake.

Razor - (6:08) 170 BPM
Review: This might be their label debut, but Metalheadz has always been the spiritual home for Narratives natives Blocks & Escher. Ever since they emerged, the duo's sound has always shivered and shook with that ardent mechanical magic that clangs and bangs, and that unforgiving icy atmosphere that leaves you feeling cold but fulfilled. Both "Moods" and "Razor" are perfect examples. The former is dancefloor dynamite, all cymbal splashes and freezer pads. The latter is much more abstract and creepy, all spacious drums and thick carpets of minor key atmosphere. Something to chew on time and time again, you'll come for "Moods" but you'll stay for "Razor".

The long-awaited release of this VIP achieves that rare thing of being perfect in its own right, destined to be played up there with the finest, as well-loved and well-worn as the original. Picking up a dub style the only way Dom can, "Outta Endz VIP" is a big n' nasty rollout, taking the best of Jamaica and giving it his own scrunch and twist. Review: Utopia bossman Mako steps up with three outrageously on-point cuts for the Metalheadz label. Each one slapping a different cheek of the dancefloor, we're flung from tearingly ugly rollers like "The Gully" to unique broken beat/jungle hybridisms on "Ju Ken" which comes with added input from the man like Throwing Snow featured. The main draw, however, will be "Tell Me Something" which sees Mako team up with Detail. Lush sense-popping synths blast spine-chilling chords and deep bass gurgles in every direction as it runs amok on a meticulous drum arrangement that never sits still. The truth is out there for those that seek it.

Review: Dutch drum & bass dynamo Lenzman finally hits album status with this immaculate collection on Metalheadz. You should all be aware of his abilities by now - deep, emotional, delicate yet bolstered with big production, he treads the line between liquid and lava with ease. Highlights can be found by the bus-load across the 17 tracks, but if you were to force us to pick favourites, the jazz-stroked "Just Can't Take" with DRS, the wistful pianos and far-away vocal command of Martyna Baker on "Paper Faces" and the darker, devious roller "Private Eye" would definitely be top of the pile. And that's just three of many, many incredible cuts. To put it simply, Looking At The Stars has drum & bass album of the year written all over it. Essential.

There's a real sense of excitement about this forthcoming album and so there should be. Lenzman has been creating some of the most beautiful music over the past few years. Review: One of the original purveyors of fresh, sparkling rollers with a dark, dirty undercurrent, Lenzman has been working hard to provide the world with some brand new material. Not just a few singles here and there though, oh no, this time around there's going to be an LP to look forward to. On this sampler, two tracks show just what he's been up to in the studio and first tune "My Tearz" featuring vocals by Steo is a gorgeous mash-up between R&B, filthy D&B a la Dillinja and a zesty, summer rollout. "Paper Faces" with Martyna Baker offering up her beautiful voice takes jazzy vibes and rolls with sophisticated relaxation. Laid back and incredibly soulful with a mean bassline bubbling just under the surface, it's safe to say Mr Lenzman has returned.

With tight, techy drums punching through the suaveness, this totally is a seductive little number. Mako/DLR/Villem - "A Certain Flavour" - (5:23) 172 BPM
Review: Fluctuating pockets of lion-growling bass tickle the edges of Mako, DLR, Villem & Ant TC1 mega-production "Hungry For Atmosphere". Its groove is the exact type of rhythm we all want from a classic Metalheadz record, which is circled by chiming bells, tremolo-infected Rhodes and an infectiously urban-sounding 'yeah vocal'. The other track however, presents a different story, with something more tear out. This time it's Mako, DLR amd Villem - minus Ant TC1 - that provide the ripping, snorting, and shaking "A Certain Flavour" - watch out for this.

Review: Not one to lay low for too long, Mikal returns to Metalheadz. Don't be fooled by the sun-drenched artwork - If this selection proves anything, it's that this guy knows when to turn it up a notch. Packing nasty bouncing bass from the off in lead track "Status Low", there's a sense you'll never know where he's off to next. In the swaying bassy sexiness of "Killa Soundboy" and the blunted breaks of "Immaterial" you can hear progression and experimentation. "Clear", a collab with Nymfo has more bite than Jaws and bonus track "Strictly Rockers" is just madness. Pick up this EP. You deserve it.

Packing in instantly recognisable sounds among dark and dirty beats only he could manufacture, lead track "Unofficial Jah" has been widely lauded as the best work to come out of Goldie's label all year. SB81 aka Solige, the producer you may have heard soundtracking your nightmares back in the late 90s/early 00s, has returned to Metalheadz with several bone-chilling tech-fests. Mixing heavily manipulated bass with electronic percussion and pinpoint accuracy, there's something uneasily androidian about this EP. That each track has its roots based in old-school sounds isn't surprising, what might be is the sheer levels of experimentation on each track. Both bonus tracks are bangers too. Get involved.

Review: As one of drum and bass' perennial figures, Jubei has spent the past few years putting out solid releases via respectable outlets like Critical's Modulations and Ingredients, but it's on Metalheadz where he's rooted most of his well-known back catalogue. Using this release to unleash his experimental side, Jubei picks his way through D&B and dubstep tempos as he collaborates with the likes of Consequence, Marcus Intalex, and even the big-in-the-game names of Goldie and dBridge. Also featured are DRS, SP:MC and Flowdan, lending their famous vocal talents to the LP which also hosts bonus track "State Of The Art (dub version)", a cold-hearted stepper from the depths of Jubei's twisted imagination.
