Review: Do us a favour plug us into a Zega... The man, the myth, the dubstep don, J:Kenzo lands on Metalheadz and not one of us are surprised... He's been teasing us with his D&B appreciation and craftsmanship on his radio shows and through releases on the likes of 31 for some time now. Naturally this is the summit of his 170 explorations so far and it's an exhilarating peak. Highlights include the glacial tension and rolling drum thunder of 'Tiger Moth' and the stripped-back curmudgeonly grizzles of 'An Uncharted Vision' but the whole EP is pure ice. What a crucial way to kick off a new year.

DLR - "10 Steps" - (6:15) 174 BPM
DLR - "Sense Of Wanting" - (5:57) 172 BPM
DLR & Mako - "Seek Knowledge" (feat Rider Shafique) - (7:18) 172 BPM
DLR - "Outbound" (bonus track) - (6:33) 173 BPM
Review: Let's jump right in: DLR and Mako together on first track "Your Mind" is a beautiful thing. Waves of old school breaks move effortlessly under a calming wash of sound and bass playfully bubbles beneath the surface. This is next level D&B. As lovely as it is to hear Dirty LeeRoy making peace with the world though, it's also fantastic to hear him get down and filthy in huge tunes like "10 Steps" and "Sense Of Wanting". Mako returns for the lush and dubby "Outbound" and finally Rider Shafique joins the clan to add sultry speculation onto dark, dubbed-out "Seek Knowledge", which itself is a beautiful collection of skittering snares, breathy brass and scraped, scarred synth impacts. A stunning release.

You're Next - (6:04) 176 BPM
Music City - (5:02) 172 BPM Hot
Review: "You're Next" is one you can't afford to sleep on. Taking charge is a filthy, majorly minimal bassline that's hard and loose, while natural-sounding breaks roll with ease - and the crack of that snare! On the other side of the Ulterior Motive agenda is "Music City", a raunchy roller tacked into place by a big ol' funky bassline and a ton of cheeky attitude. If "You're Next" is a badman, "Music City" is the pair of streetwise '70s cops on its tail.

Wrath Part 2
Wrath - (6:50) 57 BPM
Aragon Rmx - (7:04) 58 BPM Hot
Review: Feel the "Wrath" of the legendary drumfunk innovators Nucleus and Paradox! 20 years after their first partnerships on Reinforced, the pair continue to push sonic time and space in directions it's not supposed to go. "Wrath" is the perfect example of restraint as a series of devilish textures and basses worm and writhe their way around a loose, almost jazzy two-step but never overcrowd or overtake. Next up: a samurai-sharp update on their 2005 Headz classic "Aragon" where a new arrangement and a higher definition of cause a spike of the senses in the true iced out style that both Nucleus, Paradox and Headz have championed since day one.

What I Feel - (6:02) 58 BPM
Review: Paradox & Nucleus - surely one of the most consistent and innovative partnerships in drum & bass history - return to Headz with two time-spanning/stretching/defying EPs that dig deep into their history while staring into the future. Mako takes the lead with an update on their 2005 cosmic b-boy cut "Twelve Bits" with more emphasis and rolls on the breaks. It's backed by a fresh original from the main men themselves; a crisp stepper with droning pads and a purring low end that really comes into its own on big systems. Absolutely no messing around here at all. But did you expect anything less?

Review: Hear that? It's the sound of drum & bass fans over the world rejoicing that Mikal - a man whose releases are sparing but always stately - is finally dropping his debut album imminently on Metalheadz. Here are three signs Wilderness is going to be the real deal: the pneumatic tech steps of "If We Become", the iced-out atmospheres and militant kick-snares of the Xtrah-collab "At The Controls" and the jazz-tinged liquid soul of "When The Wind Changes". Bring on the album!

Review: The wait is over: Metalheadz have been teasing us with the prospect of a Mikal debut since at least 2012. Naturally the Swedish skirmish starter hasn't disappointed. 16 tracks of grazingly fresh designs we range from the sci-fi laser ballad opener "Patterns" by way of dagger-sharp dark tech ("Ruff Life"), elastic space drones ("Segunda") and even slinky, sassy funky drummer work on his ode to the master ("JB's Groove"). Complete with cameos from Break, Xtrah and Buraka Som Sistema's RIOT and Chimpo, this is the type of debut album you'd take home to meet the folks... If your folks understand the virtues of precision engineered drum & bass, that is.

Heavyweight as ever, each track punches with both emotional and physical energy. Highlights include the toxic sludge bassline on 'Why', the pristine Good Looking dreaminess and gorgeous flutes on 'All I See' and the hurricane soul of the finale track with Ella Sopp 'Falling Down'. High grade material.

Where They At/The Chosen/Control Of People

Mikal & Nymfo - "The Chosen" - (6:13) 58 BPM Hot
Mikal & RIOT - "Control Of People" - (5:54) 178 BPM
Review: Last seen collaborating with Need For Mirrors and HLZ on a single for Warm Communications, Swedish-born, London-based producer Mikal returns to Metalheadz for one solo cut and two team-ups. Solo track "Where They At" is full of Mikal's trademark bounce, a sparse, atmospheric production with jungle-inspired rhythm fragments darting off invisible surfaces in an irresistible manner. "The Chosen" sees him join forces with Nymfo for something a little more driving, as evil subs push things forward, while RIOT gets involved on "Control Of People", a slow-fast heavy hitter with crushing bass drops. You shouldn't need any proof that Metalheadz is still leading the way, but if you do then this should do the trick.

Doc Scott - "VIP Drumz" - (5:15) 148 BPM Hot

Review: Back to 93! Two of jungle drum & bass's most foundational tunes get a '17 remaster boost to ensure they stand up against today's muscular production standards. "VIP Drumz" opens with the iconic twisted detuned rising sound that perfectly captures the hair-raising hardcore transition of the time while the wily drum switches still do the business to this day. Goldie's "Ghosts Of My Life" enjoys a similar re-beef to ensure every pranged out sonic surprise remains just as vital as it was 23 years ago. Essential.

Review: Longtime Headz affiliate and frequently Goldie's co-pilot in the studio, Heist returns to the label with his largest EP to date and its business from of the off as "Violent Rain" oozes Timeless era synth tones and drums so live and sweaty you can almost see the drummer's sweat coming from your speakers. Dig deeper for Heist's most versatile showcase in years: "In Pursuit" is all stripped back and slinky (think Enei but wider), "Sierra Mist" is a sci-fi stepper that nods towards Riya's soulful style, "Unauthorised Transmissions" is a cheeky underground squelcher, "Grebe" is thoroughbred alien funk with just a sly nod towards his more standard jump-up signature while "Ghost On My Shoulder" closes the show on a beautiful glitchy vibe that's somewhere between Culprate and Squarepusher. Properly unique, creative and immaculately produced, Heist has smashed it on this one.

Benny L & Inja - "Vanta Black" - (5:25) 174 BPM
Low Blow (VIP) - (4:53) 175 BPM
Review: It's finally here! After almost a year on dub, man of the moment Benny L and Metalheadz drop one of the most anticipated and distinctive tunes of the year so far. Wheezing under pure reese bass pressure, restrained and stripped back to the barest of bones, every miniscule element from the pranged pads to the skippy hi-hats and funky little double kicks plays the perfect role as Benny takes us darker than ever before.... Not once but twice as Inja joins the fray on "Vanta Blackin" adding a sharp-tongued twist to this unique noir narrative. Actually make that thrice because they've thrown in the even longer-awaited VIP of Benny's breakthrough "Low Blow" for good measure. Blacker than black.

Review: New York's Adred returns to Metalheadz with two outstanding cuts right here. Both of which feature some major league collaborations, too. The wonderfully deep "Valley Groove" takes the lead with Commix on board; dreamy, purring and laced with just a smidgeon of hazy jazzy undertones, it's a total lesson in restraint. "Stuck In Loop" (with Ant TC1) maintains the soulful tendencies but with much more of a barbed touch as DRS lays down his lyrical raw emotion. Both are absolutely stunning.

Review: Phase is a Dutch talent who's been doing big things for a few years now, releasing on some of the best labels in the biz and generally being an all-round top guy. His second full-length outing on Metalheadz is here and it's a masterclass in how to balance hard-edged, tough sonics with a sense of sophistication and retrospection. It reminds us a lot of Grey Code's EP at the start of the year and we love it. 'Devotion' features HLZ and is the roller of the bunch, with spacious sampling and wispy pads nailing the breadth, whilst a driving percussive line and subtle yet forceful bass notes nail the depth. Outstanding.

Review: One of the most eagerly anticipated releases on Metalheadz in some time, Dom & Roland's creative slant on Goldie's classic Timeless LP is as heavy as it is stunningly different. Packing in instantly recognisable sounds among dark and dirty beats only he could manufacture, lead track "Unofficial Jah" has been widely lauded as the best work to come out of Goldie's label all year. Add the rushing sensations of flipside track "Outta Ends" with that vocal track you've been hearing literally everywhere, if you don't rewind at least once, you're no friends of ours. Review: A stunning release here from and up-and-coming D&B talent Rido, as he re-visits his previous "Twisted" and gives it the VIP treatment, fresh for Winter 2012. Whilst maintaining all the essential elements of the original, Rido adds further panache to the piece - think taught, terse breaks with that grouchy bassline belching beneath. The super smooth polished vocal from Thomas Oliver is given a less prominent position in the overall track, but is a perfect juxtaposition to the toughness of the beats. Another cracking release here from Metalheadz.

True to form, this extended EP is a gold ticket to all that's good in the world of drum and bass here in the middle of the 2010s. From start to finish those bottomless basslines roll out into huge caverns of sound, where empty space plays with constricted percussion and tight, original song writing and stunning musical ideas from like-minded producers. Jubei is killing it and if you're in his way, prepare to be converted.

Review: No trouble, no trife. No party, no trifle... While super-respected multi-alias danger maker Kid Drama has long since been affiliated with the Headz crew by association, this is actually his debut for the iconic label. Naturally he's not messed around as each of the five cuts hit with captivating, soul-stirring impact. "Brutal D" switches from gritty tech to sublime guitars, "Whole Train" updates the halftime program with some beautifully jazzy drums and scarily alien textures, "Articulation" is a space-aged bouncer straight out of the book of Blue Note, "Trife" takes us deep into the halftime industrial slurry where dreams are switched to nightmares while "Payback" closes on break-busted heavily-swung and synth-enriched finale. Each one ripping Kid Drama at his sharpest and most direct, this is a massive release.

Review: Metalheadz thrive on dark, industrial sounds, the sort of music that the label was built upon in the late 1990s and early 2000s, with stuttering jungle breaks and rolling beats all placed within an overarching veneer of blackish intent. Jem One has absolutely nailed that sound with this release, and it's deliciously weighty. 'Shaman' is a rolling number with brooding undertones, it's subtle and not explosive but all the better for it, as it slowly creeps up on you with the stealth of a ninja and the weight of a freight train. Title track 'Transpose' is quintessential heads, with foreboding synths and bubbling, grating bass underneath. Top stuff.

Review: 20 years deep and still way ahead of their time; Optical's "To Shape The Future" was a perfectly fitting title. Alien, unnerving and uncompromised; if you were lost in space, this would be the soundtrack. "Raging Calm" follows with its concrete breaks and spooky jazz textures that nod heavily at the foundations of Detroit in both sound and atmosphere. Finally we have Optical's brother Matrix with beautiful ambient composition "Undersea Flight". All remastered, all relevant, all reminders of where we were heading when the very idea of 2017 seemed like a bizarre, far-away concept.

Review: As one of drum and bass' perennial figures, Jubei has spent the past few years putting out solid releases via respectable outlets like Critical's Modulations and Ingredients, but it's on Metalheadz where he's rooted most of his well-known back catalogue. Using this release to unleash his experimental side, Jubei picks his way through D&B and dubstep tempos as he collaborates with the likes of Consequence, Marcus Intalex, and even the big-in-the-game names of Goldie and dBridge. Also featured are DRS, SP:MC and Flowdan, lending their famous vocal talents to the LP which also hosts bonus track "State Of The Art (dub version)", a cold-hearted stepper from the depths of Jubei's twisted imagination. You'd be out of your mind to miss this.

Review: It's hard to think of a time when Jubei wasn't ubiquitous. Truth be told, it wasn't until 2010 that his blend of crisp, popping percussion and bubbling bass got widely accepted by the general D&B consciousness, but now here we are. Releasing on home label Metalheadz, this double-sider takes no chances from the outset, pushing straight in with old-school cinematic waves of colour between big, bold clouts of finely-tuned percussion. Working with J Kenzo on the flip, expect deeper dubstep sounds with a techy twist. Nicely does it.

Review: Prepping us for his debut album of the same name, "To Have & Have Not" showcases D&B mainstay Jubei with real promise and menace. "The Moment" sees Jubei at his grimiest. Operating on a mean halfstep swagger, he's provided the perfect bed for Roll Deep founder Flowdan to tell a dark tale of gangland ego-trips. "Tip The Scales" features the equally distinctive vocalist MC DRS; whispering his warnings over a sharp steppy beat, he's the ideal MC for Jubei's stark riddim precision. Two sides, two vibes - if this is anything to go by, the album is going to be incredible.

To Have & Have Not
Jubei & Goldie - "The Prayer" (Blocks & Escher remix) - (6:15) 170 BPM
Incognito (feat Jerome Thomas - Skeptical remix) - (5:15) 172 BPM
Jubei & Marcus Intalex - "Tip The Scales" (feat DRS - Ulterior Motive remix) - (5:14) 58 BPM
Jubei & Goldie - "The Prayer" (Om Unit remix) - (4:37) 170 BPM Hot
Played by: Mauoq, Parker, Calculon
Review: Almost three years old and To Have & Have Not continues to spawn fresh creativity. Blocks & Escher fire up the remix engine with a thunderstruck live drum shake-up of Jubei & Goldie's "The Prayer". Skeppy follows with a slightly swung twist to "Incognito" that thrusts Jerome's vocals further under the icy spotlight while Ulterior Motive add a little funk with cymbal splashes and reverbed FX on the synths. Finally Om Unit brings us back to where it all started as the foundation angst of "The Prayer" is simmered down into a cosmic halftime stew with a vibrant amen aftertaste. To not have "To Have & Have Not" would be criminal.

Scrolls (feat Dawn Wall) - (5:58) 174 BPM
Justify (feat Terri Walker) - (4:13) 174 BPM
Review: Five years have passed since Artificial Intelligence last gave the world an album. The world of drum & bass has changed vastly since then, but they continue to plough their timeless path uncompromisingly. Like the first sampler, this EP features some very well selected guests (Terri Walker who has worked extensively with Spectrasoul and Swindle and the anonymous Dawn Wall) but the real stars are Zulu and Glenn. "Is This Real" is a purring double bass glider a la Full Cycle, "Scrolls" is a majestic diva-peppered dreamer (think early High Contrast or Logistics) "Justify" is a big old soul shock-out that's up there with their modern-classic "You Can Dream". Album hype doesn't get more beautiful than this.

Letting It Go (feat Scar) - (5:40) 174 BPM
Review: Artificial Intelligence's new album is en route... And if this first sampler is anything to go by it's loaded with serious next level goodness. Two major league collaborations at play: First up DRS spits his distinctive barbed bars over a dystopian cymbal splashing grit-fest. Next up is a filth-ridden growler with the equally unstoppable SCAR. Just a snifter of the bassline is enough to intoxicate you for a week. Powerful sounds; bring on the album!

Review: Five years have passed since AI's debut album Stand Alone. Five years worth waiting: After a string of universally received samplers, Glen and Zula finally unleash the whole set. Clearly in journey mode, the LP works really well as a listening experience as much as it does in the dance. From the gentle wafts and breezes of "Aroma" to the much darker DRS-drenched designs of "Pass The Buck" and the gritty, Metalheadz homage "The Source" back the majestic touches of two Dawn Wall collaborations, this is Artificial Intelligence at their most comprehensive and clear. Attention to detail has been paid to the finish of each track, ensuring a sheen and consistency that you really don't hear in drum & bass albums that often. Timeless.

Moruga - (5:34) 174 BPM Hot
Review: Two of the scene's most established producers and a pair for whom Metalheadz is a familiar friend, John B & Digital are back on the label with a joint single. This one is proper business and although the elements used are basic, the results are spectacular and prove once more that vibey drum & bass is best left simple, raw and full of energy. That description aptly describes the B-side to this, as Digital and John roll things out amidst a flurry of hats and snares, topped off by an archetypal bassline that stretches its legs in satisfying fashion. The A-side is almost liquid in its lounging atmosphere, but it too has a naughty kick to it that reminds you just what label you're on. Superb.

These Things VIP/Dillirious VIP
Jubei - "These Things VIP" (feat DBridge) - (5:34) 172 BPM Hot
Artificial Intelligence - "Dillirious VIP" - (5:17) 174 BPM
Played by: Sektor, Lenzman, Zen Dub
Review: If you thought you were in for a treat with a brand new Jubei tune to rinse, just how much better did your day get when you found out dBridge was in on the action? A deep, dark, filthy rumbler of a track, "These Things" VIP was made especially for underground dancefloors in the dead of winter. Artificial Intelligence follows up with "Dillirious" VIP which looks to be one of the pair's most aggressively roof-raising releases in recent memory. Packed with punchy snares and a big, menacing bassline that just keeps on uncoiling from a tight mid-range of Tesla coil effects, it's the best conclusion to two perfect VIPs hammered out of two already damn good tracks.

Beside Me (feat Eleanor Higgins & Ben Hadwen) - (7:37) 172 BPM
Review: Not content with making it to the finals of Masterchef, Survival's also been cooking up Michelin star level jungle with Script too. Make that five Michelin stars. Maybe even six... "The Wrong Side" is simply incredible. Concreted abstract jungle theatre with belting vocals from Naomi Pryor, this has potential to be a tune of the year. Deeper on the menu we find "Make 'Em Know", a one way ticket on the bludclart bus to the Leisure Lounge circa 97 before signing out with cosmic sax blasts and velvet harmonies from Hadwen & Higgins on the sublime "Beside Me". And if that's not quite enough, there's even a 2 Bad Mice remix. For reals. This really is too good to be true...

The Wolf
The Wolf - (4:53) 58 BPM
Spiral - (4:51) 173 BPM
Mosquito - (4:59) 173 BPM Hot
Review: Digital & Spirit; a tag team of such heavyweight proportions it's enough to make a bus load of sumo wrestlers blush. After a few years break from working together the duo collide once more for a trio of unabashed underground future-focused jungle pieces. Business as usual, then. "The Wolf" slaps hard with a lean minimal make-up and a bass groan that howls through the ether, uniting fans of the Manchester, Exit, Binga and Om Unit sound. "Spiral" is the star gazer of the set, rekindling the flame for early Good Looking material. Finally "Mosquito" takes us right back to 96 with a toxic bass surge and rusty stop/start amens that are so brutal they could shave your nose hairs from 20 feet.
