Review: A Nookie album on Metalheadz... Surely the D&B game is now complete? That's it. This is the moment we've been waiting for, right? It's certainly been worth the wait either way as the renowned and hugely respected artists flexes some of his most timeless and definitive material ever right here. From the sci-fi jazz of 'Future Forever' to the series of soulful reflective cuts written with Ruth Royall to the occasional house flavours like 'In Love' this is the sound of one of the most musical and soulful men in jungle drum & bass with nothing to prove but plenty to share. Unbelievably stunning and essential.

Te Awa (The River) - (4:50) 193 BPM
Review: Finally! Over 20 years have passed since their last original dispatches but Nathan Haines and A-Sides' Sci-Clone project returns to Metalheadz with its unique fusion of jazz, drum & bass and pure electronic soul and the wait has most definitely been worth it. From the sparkling, cosmic fluctuations and shimmers of 'Boss' to the smooth rare groove / jazz funk feels of the current single 'Upper Harbour Highway' to the rainbow funk and slinky bassline of 'Whole Half', this is truly one-of-a-kind alchemy that wouldn't be at home anywhere else than Goldie's label. Timeless.

The Road Less Travelled
Error - (1:04) 187 BPM
Review: Following massive albums 'Orkyd Project' and 'High Fives & Devil Eyes', Script and Survival return with their third LP and it's an absolute hoot. Maintaining their high benchmark for journey-like experiences that are rich in emotion and soaked in big references that celebrate the last 30 years of D&B culture, 'The Road Less Travelled' is a whirlwind trip around some of the most exciting and uncompromising corners of drum & bass. 'Caterpillar' doffs its cap to Virus, 'Bravo Tango' is all about the big old bruising classic Bristol sound while 'Santa Cruz' winks saucily at movements like Creative Source... these are just three examples. Complete with a range of interesting and experimental skit-like shorts, there's a real flow and timeless feel to this. The way an album should be!

25 Years Of Metalheadz Part 3
Drum Trip (Detboi's Low Ends & Amens remix) - (6:03) 191 BPM
Review: Metalheadz's march towards twenty five years continues, as does their revisitation and exploration of back catalogue classics, with a twist. Episode number three takes the furious sounds of Kaotic Chemistry's 'Drum Trip' and 'Jupiter' and reworks them, with production courtesy of Detboi, Madcap, Wheeler and Kaotic Chemistry themselves. Madcap's take on 'Drum Trip' is clean and precise, with a rolling drum break that builds through a gorgeous reece line for an instantly classic sound, one that's tied with the Metalheadz aesthetic both past and present. Detboi makes two contributions, and it's his Low Ends and Amens take on 'Drum Trip' that impresses most, with the rhythmic diversity he's become known for on full display, and Detboi sprints through downtempo breaks, stuttering claps and rusty percussive textures in his quest to create something with moodiness at its core. Finally, Kaotic Chemistry themselves turn 'Jupiter' into a fractious version of its former self, one which perfectly straddles the divide between jungle experimentalism and modern toughness. Seminal.

Secrets
Skin Deep - (7:36) 194 BPM
Raw - (6:11) 189 BPM
Fragile - (8:50) 195 BPM
Played by: Hex
Review: Dublin mandem Detboi returns to Headz exactly a year since his last release on the label (and last release full stop) with another tempo-flexing ride into the deepest corners of jungle past, present and future. While the last EP settled around the 130 mark, this one sees him taking the plunge into the 170 zone with mind-melting results as both "Secret Venom" and "Claws" lick, switch and shatter as if he'd been making it for 20+ years. Those keen on his more traditional vibes will be all over the equally gnarly, unpredictable, often-unnerving "Skin Deep", "Raw" and "Fragile". Icy, moody and twisted beyond any shapes known to mankind, no one is doing it quite like Detboi right now...

Jonny L - "Part Of U" - (5:27) 180 BPM
Played by: Boycot
Review: Reviewed by Klute: Well this brings back many memories for obvious reasons and its nice to listen and think back to this time. In the early 2000's Metalheadz moved its Sunday sessions over to the Limelight at Cambridge Circus in London and I remeber going religiously every Sunday around the time this LP was being compiled, so we all heard most of these tunes being tested out in the club. Great times. Stand outs for me are Jonny L, Marcus intalex, Spirit, Total Science, myself of course and most of all The Invaderz masterpiece Revealed. Still to this day my fav ever tune from them. Great compilation.

Generation EP2
Arplong - (5:19) 194 BPM
Review: One of 2016 many welcomed return stories (Bad Company, J Majik, Full Cycle, Pendulum...) Commix eased himself back into the game with two new super-deep originals and two long lost dubs. Now back with four originals, "Generation EP2" sees him reengaging with even broader, bolder brush strokes. "Freefall" is straight out of the "Music" era - spaced out, synthetic and sci-fi soul. "Honey" continues the deep dream feels but with a much harder, Photek-style super-chiselled drumset while "Behold" is an early morning run along a misty beach with big leaping kicks and a sense of unknowing ahead of you. Finally "Arplong" winds us down on a classic electro tip laced heavily with mild nuances of Underworld-style layering. No mucking around now .... Commix is back in the building.

The Orkyd Project
Caught Up In You (feat Orkyd) - (4:37) 189 BPM
Played by: Hex
Review: After what feels like an eternity of samplers and social media teasers, Metalheadz drop Survival & Script's debut Scar album.... And the wait has been completely worth it. Ranging from space-aged halftime grime ("Your Mistake") to incredible vocal-laced drum drama ("Renegade Kicks") by way of 23rd century cosmic soul ("Temptation") and straight-up gritty steppers ("Fractions"), skippy breaks ("The Rocket") and jazzy, funkier workouts ("You Were Here Again"), this completely compounds all the duo's successes so far and puts them on a much wider map. A serious album with depth, dynamics and soul. D&B albums like this don't come round very often...

JB's Groove - (3:13) 180 BPM
Review: The wait is over: Metalheadz have been teasing us with the prospect of a Mikal debut since at least 2012. Naturally the Swedish skirmish starter hasn't disappointed. 16 tracks of grazingly fresh designs we range from the sci-fi laser ballad opener "Patterns" by way of dagger-sharp dark tech ("Ruff Life"), elastic space drones ("Segunda") and even slinky, sassy funky drummer work on his ode to the master ("JB's Groove"). Complete with cameos from Break, Xtrah and Buraka Som Sistema's RIOT and Chimpo, this is the type of debut album you'd take home to meet the folks... If your folks understand the virtues of precision engineered drum & bass, that is.

Looking At The Stars
It's Yours (interlude) - (1:44) 186 BPM
Review: Dutch drum & bass dynamo Lenzman finally hits album status with this immaculate collection on Metalheadz. You should all be aware of his abilities by now - deep, emotional, delicate yet bolstered with big production, he treads the line between liquid and lava with ease. Highlights can be found by the bus-load across the 17 tracks, but if you were to force us to pick favourites, the jazz-stroked "Just Can't Take" with DRS, the wistful pianos and far-away vocal command of Martyna Baker on "Paper Faces" and the darker, devious roller "Private Eye" would definitely be top of the pile. And that's just three of many, many incredible cuts. To put it simply, Looking At The Stars has drum & bass album of the year written all over it. Essential.

Right Here/The Elephant Tune
The Elephant Tune - (5:36) 188 BPM
Review: The unstoppable Ulterior Motive boys bring the UK scene to the forefront again with two dangerously dark releases from the Mr Hyde side of their repertoire. "Right Here" twins sweet female vocals with erratic breaks on the verge of complete incomprehension, but never falling over that mark, instead rolling hard and fast with nasty bass providing the melody and the backbone. "Elephant Tune" on the other hand is large and loping, sawing through tinny hi-hats with chunky bass and a formidable dubstep swagger that belies their drum and bass preferences. Why the Elephant? We presume because it's big, heavy and you'll never forget it.
