Amma - "Sweetest Taboo" - (5:33) 99 BPM
Review: Midnight Riot do their bit to address the much-discussed gender imbalance in dance music with a 25-track collection featuring an almost entirely female line-up (though a few possessors of Y-chromosomes do sneak in as collaborators). With big names like Kathy Brown, DJ Paulette, Rowetta, Caron Wheeler, Sulene Fleming and Natasha Kitty Katt nestling up alongside a host of more up-and-coming artists, the quality standard is high throughout, with the musical emphasis largely on good-time, Saturday night house and disco vibes, though there a few more gently paced moments - notably in the form of covers of Bobby Caldwell's 'What You Won't Do For Love' and Sade's 'Sweetest Taboo' - while Paulette & Massey serve up a pleasing dose of acid on 'Sheroes'.

Review: 'Balearic' was never meant to be a genre: originally, it was about playing all different kinds of music regardless of genre. The latest 'Cafe Del Mar' comp recently reminded us all of that and now, just to underline the point, here comes Vol 6 in Midnight Riot's 'Balearic Headspace' series, which packs in everything from Hi-Fi Sean's deep acid bubbler 'Sunshine Dub' to Amma's fine, fragile and near-bruk Sade cover, via ultra-mellow piano house from Hypnotic Lovers, spaced-out midtempo boogie from Shalvoy, 80s Europop stylings courtesy of Frank Karma and more besides... including, yes, a very 'Balearic', female-sung Steve Miller Band cover from Dominic Dawson.

We Come In Peace
I'm Attracted To The Funk (feat Jacqui George - Yam Who? edit) - (5:00) 99 BPM
Review: Through his releases on Midnight Riot and sister label ISM, Danny Kane has proved time and again that he's one of the British nu-disco scene's greatest funk-soul-disco fusionists. We Come In Peace, his debut album, further confirms the Birmingham producer's rising star status via a mix of previously released singles, unheard workouts and a handful of fine remixes from such talented producers as J Kriv, Qwestlife and Art of Tones. Our picks of an extremely strong bunch include disco-funk/boogie fusion number 'We Come in Peace', revivalist '80s soul gem 'Do It Right', dreamy boogie-house roller 'Octopussy', future disco scene anthem 'Good Love' and his swirling, all-action disco-house collaboration with Natasha Kitty Katt, 'Ascend to Love'.

Amma - "Sweetest Taboo" - (5:33) 99 BPM
Review: Sub-titled 'Late Night Cruisin' Classics', Midnight Riot's first compilation dedicated to Yacht Rock & Disco is a loved-up saunter through colourful hybrids of blue-eyed soul, revivalist disco and the kind of slick and soulful nu-disco that sounds like it should be sound-tracking a sea-bound party put on by millionaire playboys. Across the compilation you'll find shiny cover versions of blue-eyed soul classics (Change Request's 'Lowdown' and DJ Mark Brickman's 'I Keep Forgettin'), deliciously downtempo excursions of the Balearic kind (the sugary street soul flex of Saucy Lady & U-Key's 'What You Won't Do For Love', Sweetooth's simply superb 'So Into You', the Ned Doheny-ish excellence of JIM's 'Whisper In The Wind'), and a really quite remarkable Sade cover (Samma's 'Sweetest Taboo'). In a word: lovely.

Review: Midnight Riot bring us a 20-track compilation that certainly can't be faulted on the eclecticism front, with tracks ranging from the boogie nouveau of Ilija Rudman's 'Let This Dream Be Real' to Sirs' fairly self-explanatory 'Turkish Folk', and from the sumptuous soul of Jack Tyson Charles' 'Glory' to BJ Smith's acoustic psych-pop cover of Soul II Soul's 'Keep On Movin''. The southern bar room funk of HP Edits's 'Why Don't You Slide', the smokey soundtrack jazz vibes of Peter Simmons' 'Downtown' and Phoenix's 'Sueno Latino'-ish 'Nature Dance' are three more highlights of a varied and enjoyable collection.

Better Love - (3:23) 90 BPM
Review: Known to his mum as Larry Holcombe, Get To Know's Facebook page describes his musical influences as '80s boogie, disco, indie and house", and it's fair to say that you can hear all of the above in his latest offering. 'Better Love' is supplied in four mixes: the Radio Edit has naturally been shaped to emphasise the track's poppier elements, the Club Mix will suit more commercial floors, the Babert Remix takes things a little more underground with a throbbing 80s bassline while the standout rub comes from Cuz Electric, who drop the tempo and concentrate even more on the bottom end.

Yam Who? & Jaegerossa - "Higher" - (4:35) 96 BPM
Review: Midnight Riot's first celebration of gospel-fired disco and boogie, "Take It To Church", was rather special, so hopes are naturally high for this follow-up. Happily, we can confirm that Yam Who and company have once again nailed the brief. As with its predecessor, the 23-track set offers up a scintillating, soulful mixture of bumpin' gospel house (see Redsoul's superb "Born Again" and DJ Spen's bass-heavy tweak of Boorman's "God's Got It"), righteous disco-house (the Showfa, Alan Dixon, the piano-heavy stomp of Yam Who's "Tomorrow"), synth-laden gospel boogie (Dr Packer, Yam Who's tidy revision of Andre Esput's "Call Me"), breezy sing-alongs (Lux Experience) and plenty of dusty disco, electrofunk soul rearrangements (Divine Situation, Sweet Jubilees, Phil Jaimes). In other words, it's another essential collection.

Lettum In - (5:47) 98 BPM
Review: While all Shit Hot Soundsystem releases - and there have been quite a few over the years - are filled with "Good Vibes", we're detecting extra portions of positivity on the South London producer's latest Midnight Riot outing. Check, for example, the mid-tempo, horn-totin' 80s soul/boogie business of synth-heavy opener "Hold Me Back", the slap-bass propelled disco-house heaviness of "I'm Still Around" and the reggae-pop cheeriness of "Stridin", which offers a loopy, filter-heavy dancefloor take on a much-loved Australian wedding disco favourite. "Lettum In", a chugging revision of a string-drenched cover of a Paul McCartney Christmas favourite, is also rather good.

Review: Following up great ones by Varvez, Moussa Clarke and Brian Snr. in recent times, Midnight Riot announce The Outsider: they're back: doing it their way! Following up that great deut on Anti Gravity Device, be assured that there's more quality on this sophomore effort. From the neon-lit boogie down groove of "Over Mood" (which features a rather familiar hook), through to the slo-mo and sunkissed sensibilities of "Sunshine": this shadowy figure is serving up some loved up vibes that will no doubt burn up dancefloors here there and everywhere this Summer.

Review: Massimo Vanoni (aka The Smoker) hails from Mantova, Italy and has had releases on top labels like Spa In Disco, Hot Digits and Masterworks Music. Continuing on with his knack for disco-infused themes, his new offering in the form of half a dozen tracks for London's Midnight Riot sees him on form as always. There's a familiar hook on "Let Me Get Up" but a respectful enough edit nonetheless. Not to mention a bit of lo-slung funk for good measure on "This Feeling" and "Pushing" respectively, not to mention some sleek, feelgood slo-mo soul explosions like on "About Your Love".

Inside Out - (6:26) 95 BPM Hot
2 Late - (6:13) 97 BPM
Review: To us the name Frank Virgilio conjures up impressions of an Italian-American medallion man, a master of disco, strong cologne and exposed chests (of all kinds). The distinct waft of the 1970s will emanate from your speakers when you press play. There are four tough and strutting cuts here, as hard hitting as Rocky. "Inside Out" sees the Gibbs take ecstasy and get looped outta their minds, "2 Late" is a slow, New Beat style re-edit of an electro soul gem and "Meltin Melton" is a loose and live heavy funk cut. Lastly "Somebody Else" ends things with some serious, chopped-up attitude.

Irresistable - (6:11) 95 BPM
Review: A new week brings another re-edit ruckus from the prolific but consistent Midnight Riot crew. The rock solid four-tracker sees the return of label regulars Shit Hot Soundsystem, who last graced Yam Who's imprint two years ago. They predictably hit the ground running with "Funky Situation", a rolling, gently quantized, percussion-rich peak-time stomper full of jammed-out electric piano solos and low-end funk grunt. They do their best Tiger & Woods impression on "Falling in Love", a loopy and rubbery cut-up of a well known New York boogie staple, before slowing the tempo for the loved-up, blue-eyed soul swirl of "Never Gonna Let You". Harmonica-laden funk-soul slow jam "Irresistible" draws a fine EP to a close in pleasingly dubbed-out style.

Hober Mallow - "Egbe Mi O" - (6:43) 97 BPM
Review: As you might extrapolate from the title, Riot In Lagos is Midnight Riot's tribute to the endearing influence of African dance music. In typical style, this is achieved through a blend of contemporary productions, sample-heavy cuts and edits of original African material. The standard is impressively high throughout, with little in the way of fluff or filler. Highlights include, but are not limited to, the inspired deep house/Afro-disco fusion of Mena & Melgado's "African Food", the rich deep house bump of Yam Who's "How We Do", the dense percussion and glistening guitars of Drop Out Orcherstra's Candido tribute, "Jin Go La", and the pitched-down, Fela-in-dub chug of Hober Mallow's "Egbe Mi O". Oh, and Jonny Walters' hypnotic Afro-boogie shuffler "Jam Bo Ree".

Review: The Sound of Detroit by one of it's unsung heroes, Amp Fiddlers new album Motor City Booty coming straight off the D Funk assembly line, a full on dance floor affair from Motown to P-Funk, Techno and Neo Soul. This 11 track album produced by Amp Fiddler & Yam Who? includes the massive 'Soul Fly' sounding like a Mark Ronson production had he been hanging out with George Clinton's Parlet followed by the bonafide P-Funk anthem 'Steppin' both featuring the stunning vocals by the Dames Brown girls. Amp Fiddler is credited for taking both a young J Dilla and also Q-Tip under his wing teaching them his Akai MPC techniques, setting the path for some of Hip Hops finest recordings which have defined the shape of things to come. His musical collaborations & current duties include: Moodymann's musical maestro, keyboard wizard for Theo Parrish's live band, a longstanding Funkadelic member, co-writer for Sly & Robbie, Prince, Maxwell, Jamiroquai & Seal to name a few.

Ursula 1000 - "Be The One" - (5:13) 98 BPM
Review: While Toys Of Joy might sound like the name of a bumper box of "adult pleasure accessories", it's in fact Midnight Riot's chosen name for the label's occasional series of split artist EPs. This second volume does, though, contain rather a lot of crotch-moistening material. Stroud scalpel fiends Situation Sounds impress with a stretched-out version of a dreamy Balearic rock classic, while Black Magic Disco and Disco Funk Spinner both steal the show with essential disco-rock reworks ("Strike It Back" and "Blind Beat" respectively). For those whose erogenous zones respond better to synthesizers, Ursula 1000's sweet, rubbery and sensual boogie re-rub "Be The One" should get the juices flowing.

Review: Having recently delivered a killer 12" with P-funk legend Bootsy Collins, Hifi Sean joins forces with Las Vegas-based New Yorker Peter Shalvoy on Midnight Riot. The experienced twosome delivers a quartet of floor-friendly cuts that gleefully blur the boundaries between disco re-edits, loopy disco-house, and the kind of sample-heavy, cut-up dancefloor fare championed by Tiger & Woods. Our pick of the bunch is probably the slo-mo disco-funk sleaze of "Femme", with the similarly dubby, low-slung and trippy "Kids" (a significantly scrambled rework of a familiar classic) not far behind. Those seeking more up-tempo, peak-time thrills should check the Italo disco-tinged throb of "Soviet", or the hypnotic dancefloor pressure of "Darling".

Review: Midnight Riot's latest recruit, the wonderfully named His Dirty Secrets, hails from the steamy, sleazy surrounds of Miami. His music is similarly saucy, with this debut EP offering a sextet of tracks that effortlessly blend soul, disco, funk and boogie samples with his own warm, goodtime house sounds. There's naturally much to admire, from the funk-goes-house hustle of "When You Get The Groove" and bouncy, string-laden disco-house stomp of "Real Love" (built around an oh-so familiar classic), to the loved-up, slo-mo chug of "Sylvia", and rich deep house opener "Thug Life". All told, it's a strong collection of tried-and-tested dancefloor grooves.

Review: There's a reason that Midnight Riot's eponymous compilations frequently charge to the top of the Juno Download charts. Put simply, they never disappoint. This ninth installment sticks to the now tried-and-tested formula - house-friendly re-edits and originals from across the disco, boogie, soul and funk spectrum - but predictably hits the spot throughout. As usual, there's a bonus mix - this time put together by globe-trotting scalpel jockey Rayko - and tracks come from both label regulars ('80s Child, Ziggy Phunk, Chewy Funk) and an impressive array of new or unheralded talents. It's in the latter category that you'll find some of the most impressive fare - see Phil Jaimes deliciously Balearic "Nowhere To Hide" and Cosmocomics' kaleidoscopic synth-funk jam "Mary Jane" - though the standard remains pleasingly high throughout.

House Of LOVE - (3:07) 92 BPM
Review: Adelaide-based producer Henri Le Blanc got his break with Midnight Riot after being championed by fellow Aussie studio don Inkswel. It makes perfect sense. While Le Blanc's style somewhat differs from that of the Hot Shot giant, he shares the same love of dusty grooves, soulful chords, swinging beats (some deep house, some informed more by disco or hip-hop) and warm instrumentation. It's an endearing formula that makes for an excellent debut album. Inspired, according to its maker, by the ups and downs of "real love", The House of Love is packed with highlights, from the percussive deep house warmth of "States Is High" and Balearic disco loveliness of "L'Amour Physique", to the Afro-influenced MPC shuffle of "African Mother".

Review: Solid Fool is one of those pesky "mystery artists" that are so prevalent these days - a well-regarded Austrian producer who wishes to remain nameless. Here Comes The Sun marks his debut for Yam Who's Midnight Riot imprint. His style neatly sidesteps easy categorization, utilising classic (and obscure) disco, funk, soul and electrofunk samples alongside nu-disco synths and weighty deep house grooves. It's a formula that guarantees fun-times and funk aplenty. Opener "Here Comes The Sun" is particularly good - a bumpy, thrill-a-minute fusion of P-funk bottom end, shimmering synths and vocals lifted from a classic cover of the well-known Beatles record. Elsewhere, "Lone Gone" is a delicious, toe-tapping head-nodder that adds a reggae swing to a killer disco groove, while the epic "Lovechild" is a 12-minute exercise in slowly building disco release.

Review: Combining tech house with a disco sound may not seem an obvious pairing, but that is where this London producer is coming from, and he does it extremely well. "Thru The Night" is dreamy, housed up, electro-soul, "Truth" adds trancey gospel to the mix and "Love Sunday" sprinkles some spaced out disco dust on the Cherille/Alexander O'Neal classic Saturday Love. It's all mesmerising snowflakes-at-night deep and electro-house on "If U Want Me". "Pressure" is fluffy clouds o'clock - all blissed out electro-pop- whilst "Your Girl" ends things on a haunting disco high.

The Way We Live - (6:28) 99 BPM
Review: Those who follow Belabouche on SoundCloud will know just what a prodigious re-editor he is; not a week seems to pass without a clutch of new scalpel works from the talented Italian producer. Here he brings his effortlessly soulful, loose-limbed approach to Yam Who's Midnight Riot label for the first time. All five tracks are excellent, with the baggy, string-drenched disco-soul bump of "Slide Into Your Heart" and dubwise funk thrust of "Money Runner" standing out. He mixes up the tempos well, with the EP's two slower moments - the sinewy jazz-funk headiness of "Open Your Mind" and intoxicating, horn-heavy "The Way We Live" - being particularly potent. If you're after edits that match dancefloor chops with an easy soulfulness, this should be an essential purchase.

Review: Yam Who's Midnight Riot series continues to impress, delivering tracks that sit somewhere between cheeky re-edits, illicit remixes and original productions. There's much to enjoy on this latest label missive, a four-tracker from Waterford-based disco/electrofunk enthusiast Jay Roche (aka Jay-Ru). "It's Not Over" is a deliciously wide-eyed version of '80s soul fave "It's Over Now" with some neat additional nu-disco and deep house touches, while "Say You Love Me Girl" is a brilliant cut-up edit of a soaring '80s disco jam. "Brown Baby" employs similar MPC-jamming techniques, as well as a killer breakdown and build-up slap bang in the middle. Finally, "It's Tooo Late" [sic] alternates between subdued groovery and grandiose flourishes on a delightful slo-mo disco gem.
