Review: While Rocco Universal's previous nu-disco singles on Leng and When I Met You tended towards the Balearic, neither were anywhere near as gorgeously sun-kissed, colourful and gently mind-altering as "Insieme", his first outing on Midnight Riot. He provides two mixes of his own: a "Live Jam" that sits somewhere between piano-driven early Italian house, acid-fired nu-disco headiness and wide-eyed cosmic disco, and a rushing "Piano Mix" that's so positive that it can't fail to raise smiles out on the dancefloor. Pete Herbert goes in a similar sonic direction on his delightful - and arguably even better - remix, while bonus cut "Eyeless Gold Barb" is an acid-flecked fusion of dubby proto-house vibes, stripped-back bu-disco and synth-laden electrofunk.

Review: Sadly we fear more than love may be needed to fix 2020, but those plucky Midnight Rioters are on hand to give it a go anyway, as they serve up a 19-track compilation of disco, nu-boogie, disco-house and soulful house grooves, with the emphasis firmly on dancefloor thrills and belt-along vocals. Some of tracks are re-edits (Musta's 'I Like Dance', for instance, reworks Cheryl Lynn's classic 'Got To Be Real'), some are original productions; all are built with slinky hips and dancing feet in mind, and with cuts from the likes of Situation, Andre Espeut and Natasha Katt, not to mention Rony Breaker's soulful anthem-of-the-moment 'Change', disco dollies will be more than satisfied.

Review: The ever reliable Midnight Riot returns with a piping hot nu-disco joint by the Thessaloniki-based DJ/producer Dim Zach, who follows up some impressive outings on Rayko's Rare Wiri and Golden Soul in recent times. "Lonely" is a low-slung and funky number; perfect for the warm-up or the late night alike, with a catchy and familiar hook that's sure to work the dancefloor. Dim Zach is one to keep an eye on in 2020!

You'll Be Mine - (6:16) 120 BPM Hot
Ain't Too Proud - (6:13) 121 BPM
Review: Three solid nu-disco/disco-house jams here from Ladies On Mars, possibly the most inaccurately named artist in history as there's only one of him, he's definitely not a lady and he actually comes from Buenos Aires, not Mars! 'Just Enough' is a pleasant disco-house roller with a gospel-leaning chorus and a Hed Kandi-ish feel overall, while 'You'll Be Mine' has a more authentic early 80s boogie vibe. The standout for this reviewer though is 'Ain't Too Proud', which tops a jaunty, plinky-plonk rhythm with a big, blues-y male soul vocal from the Cee Lo Green/Aloe Blacc school of thought - peaktime singalong action will doubtless ensue.

Change (Qwestlife remix) - (7:00) 120 BPM
Review: Midnight Riot take something of a left turn into trad-style soulful house territory with this release from Hungarian producer Rony Breaker, which features the golden tonsils of San Francisco's Brian Lucas. In its Original form, 'Change' sits in the tradition of cuts like Shaun Escoffery's 'Days Like This' or Erro's 'Change For Me', which means anthem status at the likes of Soul Heaven or the Vocal Booth Weekender is pretty much guaranteed. Qwestlife then beefs up the bottom end for the slightly more commercial/discofied floors, but it's the sheer quality of Lucas's vocal that carries it either way.

Review: Midnight Riot serve up some contemporary disco/disco-house grooves that are sure to find favour at the likes of Glitterbox and Horse Meat Disco. In its Original form, 'Groove It' has a summery, mid-00s Hed Kandi kinda feel. Yam Who? then steps up with a Studio 54 Tribute Vocal Mix which, true to form, is somehow altogether more sumptuous and luxuriant without actually being that radically different, and which comes accompanied by a matching instrumental. Finally, Rocoe funks things up considerably on a remix that's driven by a phat bassline, wukka-wukking geetar and rare groove-style, siren-like horns.

Melted Funk - (4:11) 124 BPM
Review: Natasha Kitty Katt joins forces with the UK's Danny Kane, best-known as one-half of Jakkin Rabbit, to produce a three-track EP for the uber-hip Midnight Riot. The lead track, 'Feel It Inside', is a sumptuous, sophisticated jam - all sensuous female vocal, wailing sax and walking bassline - that you can file under 'nu disco' or 'disco-house' as you see fit, and that comes accompanied by a matching instrumental. Completing the package is 'Melted Funk', a tuffer and fairly self-explanatory affair that for this reviewer is the EP standout, with a hefty slap bassline that recalls Nush's remix of Sara Parker's 'My Love Is Deep' from back in the day.

Review: UK scene legend Glyne Braithwaite - formerly head of deep and soulful house promo/distribution specialists Rude Awakening - once more dons his Risk Assessment guise to serve up a feel-good slice of summer disco action. The original mix of 'Bad Times' is the most faithfully 70s-sounding, while Yam Who? beefs up the bottom end and takes the track into more overtly disco-house territory; both rubs ride a distinctly 'Ma Foom Bey'-esque squelchy bassline, while the EP's completed by a Yam Who? Dub. There's nothing especially ground-breaking going on, admittedly, but any one of the three will keep disco floors moving nicely.

Review: If you're fiending for some disco-infused vocal house goodness in the "traditional" style, you'll struggle to do much better this week than this cover of the Gwen McCrae classic. There are five mixes to choose from: all five operate in the territory roughly mapped out by Joey Negro and Stonebridge, but Glass Slipper's energised rub is probably the one you'll hear most at the likes of Horse Meat Disco or Glitterbox - handbags at the ready! - while the deeper, more sultry Chevals Remix is the pick for those in search of more soulful, US garage-style grooves.

Review: Essex boy Sean Scanlan has been DJing since the late 90s, but didn't make his production debut until 2013 - and now Yam Who? & Jaegerossa are drafted in to give his first-ever single some of their trademark disco polish. Their Extended Vocal Remix is the main event, and the closest in feel to the original 2013 release - an uplifting disco-houser in the classic Hed Kandi vein. If that's a bit poppy for your tastes, though, you can always head for the Instrumental, where the staccato strings and shimmering geetar really shine through. A beatless Reprise completes the package.

Call Me (Qwestlife London Lockdown remix) - (6:56) 120 BPM Hot
Review: Boogie-loving soul man Andre Espeut should be regarded as one of the nu-disco scene's finest voices. Yet despite adding his slick, smooth vocals to all manner of other people's music, he's yet to enjoy considerable solo success. Perhaps this new single, featuring two superb mixes from Yam Who and Tom Laroye's Qwestlife project, will change that. The opening "French Connection Remix" place Espeut's superb vocal atop a killer backing track that sits somewhere between revivalist electrofunk and "Get Lucky"-era Daft Punk. The track's inherent boogie flavour is explored more explicitly on the looser and even more synth-heavy "London Lockdown Mix", which is probably our pick of the pair (though it's a close-run thing).

The southern bar room funk of HP Edits's 'Why Don't You Slide', the smokey soundtrack jazz vibes of Peter Simmons' 'Downtown' and Phoenix's 'Sueno Latino'-ish 'Nature Dance' are three more highlights of a varied and enjoyable collection.

Review: DJ Mark Brickman arrived in South Beach in late 2000 and has been gracing the ears of house music fans ever since. As a DJ, producer and the current head of Miami's RaMBunktious Records, this veteran of the underground house music scene shows no signs of slowing down - and this new one for Midnight Riot is testament to that. There's a very familiar hook on the funked-up boogie down antics of "A Fifth Of Disco", followed similarly by the sultry, vocal-driven groove of "My Spirit" which is very much reminiscent of a classic. Finally, get stoned into the groove with the low slung "Keep On" which is derived from another oldie - but a goody!

Review: French producer Chevals touches on a range of musical styles on this EP for Midnight Riot. Of the four cuts featured, 'Mindbuster' itself is that which sits most comfortably under the 'nu disco' umbrella, while 'I Wanna Be Next To You' fuses elements of disco, funk and house into a languid, sundown-friendly groove. 'Thank You For The Ride' has an 80s-ish feel - and more specifically, a distinct Janet Jackson-esque flava - and finally 'Can't Keep On Lovin' You' is very similar in spirit to the R&B-tinged deep/soulful house that Om used to specialise in, with hints of Daft Punk in the bassline.

Review: Italian producer Da Lukas has released music on some significant and/or well-known labels in the past - think Ministry of Sound, Hed Kandi, Strictly Rhythm and Re-Loved. He received plenty of praise too for his first appearance on Midnight Riot earlier in the year, and here returns to Yam Who's imprint with two more tooled-up peak-time workouts. Opener "Groove On" sees him successfully add bouncy but beefy beats, filter effects and various disco-house production techniques to Reuben Wilson funk classic "Got To Get Your Own". Meanwhile, "In A Disco" is little less than a celebratory disco-house romp built around the variously throbbing, life-affirming and over-the-top elements of a stone-cold disco classic.

Review: When it comes to celebratory, life-affirming musical positivity, you can't beat Midnight Riot's ongoing "Disco Made Me Do It" compilation series, which gathers together a mixture of re-edits, reworks and original productions from the label's vast roster of artists. At 24 tracks deep it's a bit of an epic, though we can happily confirm that the quality threshold remains impressively high throughout. Our current favourites include the Redux Inc re-edit of Casa Blanco's P-funk flavoured hip-wiggler, "Funk & Dub With You", the rushing, piano-powered house bounce of "Got Me" by Ladies on Mars, label boss Yam Who's sparkling nu-boogie revision of Phil Jaimes' "My Sensitivity" and the deep, groovy '80s soul flex of Chevals' "Thank You For The Ride".

Review: Phil Jaimes has long been a member of the extended Midnight Riot family, having first contributed a track to one of the label's must-have compilations way back in 2015. Here he delivers his first single for Yam Who's label, though his original version of "My Sensitivity" is surprisingly nowhere to be seen. Yam Who's EP-opening "Extended Club Mix" is superb though. Featuring a superb lead vocal by Amma, it's a breezy chunk of revivalist disco-boogie/nu-disco fusion rich in ear-catching piano riffs, sequelchy synth bass and tons of colourful synthesizer sounds. The Midnight Riot boss also offers up a delay-laden, music-free "Acapella Mix" for DJs who like to get busy in the mix, while the "Dillons 15th Mix" re-imagines the track as a slab of classic vocal deep house.

Review: Sometime Springbok and Tropical Disco artist Din Ray is moving up in the world, as this release on Yam Who's popular Midnight Riot label proves. In its original form (track two), "Into My Life" is a drowsy, filter-sporting chunk of string-laden deep house/disco fusion featuring strong lead vocals from chanteuse Richelle Hicks. It's good, but the accompanying Yam Who mix is even better. Sharper, sweeter and rich in added instrumentation (bass, synths, even more life-affirming string sweeps), the experienced producer's revision successfully turns the track into an ultra-positive chunk of nu-disco/boogie fusion underpinned by chunky house drums.

Review: After releases on Phonica and Freerange, Chilean producer Massiande puts another uber-hip label notch on his production bedpost with a three-track, four-mix EP for Midnight Riot. The title track so convincingly works late 70s/early 80s tropes that only a distinctly 21st Century heft to the bottom end gives away its much more recent origins, while Moodena supplies a housier remix that tuffens up the beats while bringing the guitar to the fore. Elsewhere, 'The City' is all jazz piano licks and 3am deep house beats, while 'United We Funk' operates in more straight-up disco-house territory.

This three-track missive on Midnight Riot showcases the producer's re-edit skills. Opener "You Must Be The Girl" sets the tone, with Risk Assessment turning a colourful early '80s synth-disco jam into an attractive, tooled-up disco-house romp. "Left To Right" is a bustling and breathless dance through beefed-up disco-funk territory laden with flash-fried funk-rock guitar riffs and Prince style backing vocals, while "Bionic Lover" is a house style revision of another low-slung, guitar-laden chunk of disco-rock funkiness.

Review: Greek producer C Da Afro returns with three doses of retro-fuelled dancefloor fun. 'Feel Alright' is a lively disco workout with some killer synth stabs, exuberant brass and a treated female "feels all right" vocal chorus. The title track is an altogether more low-slung funk number that recalls the likes of Cameo, Zapp or Ohio Players, while completing the EP is 'Let's Talk About It', a phat-assed, funked-up disco-houser that'll whisk you straight back to the mid-90s. There's plenty of stuff like this about, admittedly, but nearly 10 years into his recording career, Christos Antoniou does it better than most...

Review: Sean Scanlan's been a leading DJ draw on Essex's house and disco circuit since the late 90s, when he was still a teenager, playing everywhere from Hed Kandi parties to U18's nights. Now he's based in Mallorca and is putting those 20+ years of DJ experience to good use in the studio, with a little help from Yam Who? & Jaegerossa, who bring us Main Vocal, Instrumental and Stringapella remixes of this recent offering. The influence of Essex's No 1 disco don, a certain Mr Lee, is written all through this one like a stick of rock - so much so, in fact, that it's probably not too much of a simplification to say that if you dig Joey Negro, you'll almost certainly dig this.

Review: If you've been living the life of a hermit for the last few years, you're unlikely to have come across Chewy Rubs, a prolific re-editor and maker of dancefloor dubs whose regular EPs for Re-Loved, Bandolier and Fall From Grace are must-check affairs. Predictably the producer's latest outing on Midnight Riot is packed with top-notch treats too. Our pick of the bunch is "Hammered", a sweaty romp through extra-percussive funk-rock pastures rich in wild organ stabs, grunting vocals, slap bass and flash-fried guitar licks. That said, the other three tracks are equally as impressive, particularly the string-laden disco dub "Dancin' At The Disco" and swirling Italo-disco-meets-disco-house opener "Bo Fo".

Review: Since launching in 2018, Midnight Riot's gospel-fired "Take It To Church" compilation series has proved hugely popular, hence this third volume of re-edits, remixes and sample-heavy original productions. As usual, there's much to set the pulse racing from start to finish, with highlights including the jazz-funk fired soulful house bump of Opolopo's remix of "Follow Me" by Sense of Sound Singers, the gospel disco/disco-house fusion of Sarah Dash's "Something Inside (DJ Spen & Reelsoul Remix)", the rubbery goodness of Carlton Low's 1980s sounding "Peace, Love, Happiness", the gospel-boogie brilliance of Jack Tennis's filter-heavy "Won't You" and the gospel scalpel science that is Divine Situation's superb "Goin' On" re-edit.

One Night In Miami
Again & Again - (6:46) 121 BPM Hot
One Night In Miami - (6:50) 124 BPM
Review: Miami-based Mark Brickman has been churning out tried-and-tested dancefloor treats for the best part of a decade, though this is the first time he's appeared on a label other than his own Rambunktious imprint. You'd expect it to raise his profile considerably, in part because both tracks are as humid and hot as the city in which he resides. Opener "Again & Again" is a thrusting, sample-heavy disco-house stomper that makes great use of horn blasts, looped vocal snippets, heavy percussion and a bassline capable of raising the blood pressure of even the most hesitant dancers. "One Night In Miami" is a slightly more relaxed and rubbery disco-house excursion, closer in tone to a beefed-up re-edit than a densely layered original production. It's good, too, though it's the virtual A-side that stands out.

Review: Argentinian producer Jonathan Braverman isn't really a woman, let alone several women; nor does he hail from the Red Planet. But he does, as Ladies On Mars, peddle a neat line in contemporary disco grooves, with this new EP packing four more examples. 'Got Me' is a rambunctious affair with a mid-70s New York feel, while 'Evil Lover' itself has more of an early 80s Euro vibe. 'Funky Music' is a squelchy, uptempo slab of funked-up disco house, while finally 'Cruising' blends jazz-funk and 80s boogie influences while ripping a Bar-Kays vocal, and chucks in some fine space disco stabs for good measure.

Review: Prolific French newcomer Tommy Glasses comes to the Midnight Riot stable with an upbeat, summery EP that, stylistically, sits somewhere between nu-disco and 00s soulful/funky house, with the smooth n' sultry 'All Night' itself leaning a little more to the house side of that equation while the poppier 'Can't Get Enough' errs towards disco. Both tracks come accompanied by matching dubs, and while there's nothing particularly new or groundbreaking going on, those lucky enough to be looking forward to a summer of White Island gigs would do well to grab a copy now.

Here the Belgian producer kick-starts 2020 via an impressively expansive EP on Midnight Riot. We can imagine righteous, gospel-tinged piano-house opener "His Name" becoming a peak-time anthem in both disco and house clubs, while gospel-disco edit "Each Night" and bouncy, horn-laden Afro-funk cut "Mabina" are also superb. The set also boasts two alternate takes on "His Name": a cheery, warehouse-ready "Chitown Mix" and the slightly more gospel-fired "Harlem Stomp Mix".

Review: Midnight Right's Afrobeat, Afro-funk and Afro-disco inspired "Riot In Lagos" compilation is arguably one of the label's standout releases of the last few years, so it's exciting to hear that volume two is on the way. To give us a taste of what's to come, the Yam Who-helmed imprint has offered up this rock solid sampler. Krewcial kicks things off via the jaunty, sax-heavy brilliance of "Mabina" - a kind of swinging, bass-heavy disco tribute to Fela Kuti - before Get To Know cheerily dance through mid-80s Nigerian boogie/synth-soul pastures on the wonderful "Fugar" re-edit. The EP also boasts two versions of Situation's Afro-centric cut "Wonky": a deep and jazzy Afro-house version by Frank Situation rich in glistening jazz guitar solos, and an even hazier and more hypnotic Mr Mulatto take.

Review: This time last year Brian Basil van Heerden delivered his strongest single to date under the now familiar Brian Snr alias. The good news is that "Hot Shot" - his first EP for 12 months - is arguably even better. In its original form (track two), "Hot Shot" is sleazy, throbbing and overtly sexual; a revivalist chunk of mid-tempo Italo-disco headiness full of whispered spoken word vocals, razor-sharp alien synthesizer lines and an arpeggio style bassline so druggy it may induce hallucinations. It comes accompanied by two fine remixes: the "Hober Mellow Dub", which re-casts it as a chunk of dubby deep house dreaminess, and a superb Yam Who revision which re-builds the track as a sparkling slab of revivalist disco-boogie cheeriness complete with Balearic piano stabs and swirling strings.

Review: As the year comes to a close, labels are naturally offering up celebratory compilations showcasing their strongest releases of 2019. The latest comes from Midnight Riot, a prolific imprint that rarely fails to serve up the fieriest contemporary disco heat. As you'd expect, the 26-track selection includes a blend of superb original productions (the nu-disco soul warmth of Jack Tyson Charles' "Glory", Alton Edwards sweaty, synth-bass propelled boogie-house gem "I Just Wanna Spend Time With You", the swirling disco headiness of Arthur Baker's "Reachin' Out") and re-edits/reworks (Dr Packer's gospel boogie revision "The Power", C Da Afro's disco-funk slammer "Party Purpose" and the suitably celebratory "Boogie On Time" by Ladies On Mars). As you'd expect, the quality threshold remains impressively high throughout.

Any Way You Wanna - (6:06) 116 BPM
Review: The occasional Las Vegas-based duo of Peter Shalvoy and Milo Berger join forces once more for this two-tracker on Midnight Riot. In its original form, 'Any Way You Want' is a laidback funk groove comprised of shuffling drums, a fast-fingered walking bassline and gloriously cheesy keys, all topped with a spoken/sung "do it any way you want to, do it any way you wanna" male vocal, the overall vibe recalling 70s barrio funk. Hi-Fi Sean then supplies a predictably well-crafted remix that ups the pace to a housier tempo while adding spy thriller horns and a much fatter, rumbling b-line.

Review: In some cases it's useful to name-check some of the labels a producer has released music on; in the case of re-edit scene stalwart C Da Afro, it's easier to name the handful of imprints he's not appeared on. Here the prolific Greek rework merchant returns to Midnight Riot for the first time in almost five months, which by his standards is an eternity. As usual there's plenty to set the pulse racing across the EP, from the lolloping, electric piano-sporting orchestral disco brilliance of "Party Purpose", to the dewy-eyed, slap-bass sporting goodness of "Get Happy" and the filter-smothered disco-house revision business of bouncy closing cut "The Love For The Music".

Review: This two-tracker from Midnight Riot has all the makings of a future disco-house anthem. It comes courtesy of label regular Natasha Kitty Katt, imprint big cheese Yam Who and vocalist Jacqui George. In its EP-opening "Gospeldelic Mix" form, "Into Your Life" is a rushing fusion of rolling house grooves, spacey synth solos, jangling gospel house pianos and a stunning lead vocal from George that should get the hairs on the back of your next leaping heavenwards. Danny Kane handles remix duties, offering a slicker and smoother interpretation that sits somewhere between nu-disco (check the squidgy new synth parts), soulful house and bouncy disco-house. Like the version that preceded it, Kane's mix is a genuine winter warmer.

Review: UK outfit Bad Bambino describe themselves as "a techno funk band bringing you groovilicious tunes with a beat that is guaranteed to get you bopping!" On the evidence of this, their first official release, they certainly have an ear for a catchy pop tune - who knows, the lightweight, frothy original could even have mainstream Top 40 potential. But for more serious spinners it's the remixes that'll be of more interest, with Mannix the pick for commercial floors, Andy Baker treading a more sophisticated, understated path and Yam Who? turning in Vocal and Instrumental rubs that sit right on the soulful house/nu-disco cusp.

Review: We can confirm that the latest EP from San Diego's Never Dull is definitely not dull. In fact, the three re-edits on show on this Midnight Riot label debut are genuinely rather fun. The San Diego artist hits the ground running on EP opener "Easy Love", delivering a fine rearrangement of a glassy-eyed early '80s jam full of dewy-eyed male and female vocals, squelchy synth bass and classic disco style orchestration. "Too Blind To See" is a gently housed-up take on a smooth '80s soul classic, while "The Fire Goes On" is a confident strut through disco funk territory laden with punchy horn blasts, ear catching bass guitar and chiming lead lines.

'That Feelin'' centres around a fluttering six-string riff, 'You Are My Love' foregrounds a female vocal sample, 'Let It Go' is a deeper, funkier groove, 'I'm The One' loops up AOR-ish samples in a Balearic kinda way and then finally 'Train To Love' is a slower, chuggier cut that brings the EP to a hazy, looping close.

Review: Two sumptuous originals and two matching dubs courtesy of rising French producer Tommy Glasses make up this latest from the ever-checkable Midnight Riot. 'Feel Good' itself sits somewhere between nu disco and soulful house with its plainitive, R&B-style female vocal and incessantly fluttering disco guitar, while 'For Love' sits a little more firmly under the disco banner and sports a similar female vocal, as well as some very 80s-sounding sax doodles. Both are well crafted and plenty playable, with the dubs offering a useful alternative for DJs for whom the vocal is a little too Hed Kandi-esque for comfort!
