Review: Midnight Riot do their bit to address the much-discussed gender imbalance in dance music with a 25-track collection featuring an almost entirely female line-up (though a few possessors of Y-chromosomes do sneak in as collaborators). With big names like Kathy Brown, DJ Paulette, Rowetta, Caron Wheeler, Sulene Fleming and Natasha Kitty Katt nestling up alongside a host of more up-and-coming artists, the quality standard is high throughout, with the musical emphasis largely on good-time, Saturday night house and disco vibes, though there a few more gently paced moments - notably in the form of covers of Bobby Caldwell's 'What You Won't Do For Love' and Sade's 'Sweetest Taboo' - while Paulette & Massey serve up a pleasing dose of acid on 'Sheroes'.

Review: It's that time of year when label compilations arrive by the truckload, but this Midnight Riot collection is definitely one that stands out from the herd, because it packs more bullets than a Gatling gun! Leading the charge for yours truly is Yam Who? & Rikky Disco's 'Set Me Free' with its romping house pianos, fat-ass b-line and absolute killer of a jazz-like female vocal, but not far behind come Da Lukas's 'Drop The Funk' (which bites Diana Brown & Barrie K Sharpe's early 90s classic 'The Masterplan'), Domino DB's gospel-infused soulful house anthem 'You Got The Love', The Love Doves' strutty 'Sistahood', Brian Lukas & Suki Soul's Inner City-nodding 'Back Together' and, well, you get the idea! Review: Midnight Riot's ongoing 'Disco Made Me Do It' compilation series reaches volume seven. Like its' predecessors, the 20-track set prioritises fun and frolics, blurring the boundaries between disco, electrofunk, nu-disco and house via a mixture of unreleased cuts, high-grade remixes, exclusives and familiar favourites. There's naturally tons to get the blood pumping throughout, with the many highlights including Opolopo's deliciously squelchy, sun-soaked and soulful take on Danny Kane and Princess Freesia's 'I Love The Way You Do', Yam Who's fantastic, early '80s disco style rework of Bazza Ranks and Venessa Jackson's 'Talk Is Cheap', the synth-heavy nu-disco perfection of Sammy Deuce's 'Give Me Love', and the low-slung, party-starting brilliance of Brothers In Arts' 'We Got The Funk', featuring the distinctive vocals of Freakpower's Ashley Slater.

Review: A slightly unusual release here. It's neither a straight-up cover version, nor a re-edit: instead it's best described as a cover in the style of a re-edit, in that the track's been replayed/resung but in chopped and looped, edit-like form. The song in question is, if you hadn't already guessed, the theme tune from the second best film of all time (that's 'Grease', to you) and despite the undeniable and unavoidable whiff of cheese, it actually works surprisingly well. Two versions to choose from, the Invisible Yam's Band Rework focusing on the female chorus and adding house pianos while the Original concentrates on the male-sung verses.

Review: A heavyweight transatlantic vocal team-up here, as the in-demand tonsils of San Francisco's Brian Lucas share the spotlight with those of the north of England's equally in-demand Suki Soul. Together, they take on Inner City's 'Back Together Again' from 1993 - a track yours truly used to absolutely rinse back in the day, so hopefully it'll mean something when I say they've made a pretty decent fist of it, too. Yam Who? & Jaegerossa's disco-flavoured Extended Mix is accompanied by a matching instrumental but my money's on the Eric Faria House Mix, albeit possibly just because it's the closest to the original...

Review: An in-house three-way here as Midnight Riot boss Yam Who? teams up with his partner-in-crime Phil Rose AKA Jaegerossa (who runs the Black Riot sub-label) and regular collaborator Rebecca Scales, whose tonsils have graced several previous Midnight Riot releases. The resulting track is exactly the kind of uplifting Saturday night disco-houser you'd expect and is served in three mixes: DJ Mark Brickman's will pack the most punch on commercial floors but these ears are drawn to the slightly smoother, sultrier Original Mix, which comes with a matching instrumental and which will be the better bet in the more soulful spots.

Review: The source material for 'Why You Wanna Do That' has us beat but there's no way the Dutch duo of Ed Burley and Richard Marinus - that's Midnight Riot regulars Disco Sparks, to you - have come up with that chorused 80s disco/soul/boogie vocal on their own! Said vocal sits atop a backing made up of crisp 4/4s and a seriously fat-assed 80s bassline, and is joined by energising brass fanfares and handclaps that just don't stop... dancefloor stompery and peaktime euphoria at the likes of Glitterbox is 100% guaranteed. Review: UK disco don Yam Who? once more teams up Lincolnshire-based vocalist Suki Soul and He Who Shall Not Be Googled (Mr Smith) on this cover of Krystol's 1984 boogie classic 'After The Dance Is Through'. Their rendering wisely leaves the song structure intact, simply upping the tempo a notch or two and giving the track a light topcoat of shimmering nu-disco polish, while Suki turns in an impressive vocal performance - especially when you consider that she's having to try and compete with an original sung by a trio. A cert on soulful and nu-disco floors for the summer, with simple vocal and instrumental rubs to choose from.

Review: A heavy-hitting collab here as UK disco stalwart Yam Who? joins forces once more with San Francisco-based soul vocalist Brian Lucas. There's a distinctly Sly Stone-esque quality to Lucas's performance on 'Gettin To Know You', an uplifting and peaktime-oriented but still very musical affair with infectious pianos, a soaring sax line and gospel-style BVs. It has to be said that the Extended, Main and Radio mixes really differ only in length - a little more variety wouldn't have gone amiss but then again, you know what they say to do when it ain't broke...

Review: Two quite contrasting cuts here from LA boy Uri Allgood, who's on a self-described mission to "fuse his love of 80s new wave, disco, deep booty house and intergalactic laser beams". 'Release' itself is an uptempo disco (or perhaps disco-house) jam in the classic sense, complete with uplifting strings, diva-esque female vocal and ass-wigglin' funk bassline, and is the pick to these ears. The accompanying (and aptly named) 'Italo Timewarp', on the other hand, is all glacial synths and vocodered vox - though another, more soulful male vocal leads the way and stops things getting too horribly 1983-ish.

Review: Following previous releases on Big Love Music and Congellous, the slightly mysterious Jung Soul come to Midnight Riot with this uplifting and summery slice of soulful/disco house. Mic duties are taken care of by one Louise Marshall - presumably not to be confused with Louise Clare Marshall, who's worked with everyone from the Jools Holland Orchestra to Bryan Ferry and Robbie Williams - who repeatedly invites us to "take me down, I'm hot for love". Is it a future classic in the making? Probably not. Will it inspire hands-in-the-air singalong action in Ibiza this summer? Almost certainly.

Rather than being yet another cover of a much-loved house anthem, this 'You Got The Love' is an original composition from Italian DJ/producer Domino DB that's got a raw 'n' strutty disco-funk-boogie feel in its original form, while the smoother remix from DJ Mark Brickman & Yam Who? brings the mid-00s soulful house vibes in spades - if you'd said it was a long-lost Defected release from Marc Evans or Ron Hall & The Muthafunkaz I'd have believed you. Review: A truly international collaboration here as Din Jay, who hails from southern Italy, teams up with Barcelona-based Brazilian Guto Fernandez and New York vocalist Karmina Dai. The end product of their collective labours is 'Permission', an uplifting and summery vocal belter that you can file under nu disco, soulful house or disco-house as you see fit... either way it's the quality of Ms Dai's vocal that carries it, though if you listen closely there's some pretty fine horns work going on too. 'Permission' may not be destined for future classic status, but it'll soundtrack its share of euphoric peaktime moments in the coming months for sure.

Volume 6 opens with the beefed-up 70s groove that is Yam Who?, Jaegerossa & Suki Soul's rework of Stargard's 'Wear It Out' (as sampled on Pete Heller's 'Big Love') and closes with some pure boogie sweetness from SequenceProgram & Mishell Ivon, while in-between you'll find the hazy, lazy Balearic pianos of Luca V1's 'Take Me On', peaktime disco stompery from Natasha Kitty Katt, uptempo flute-fuelled funk from C Da Afro, the marriage of Caron Wheeler's tonsils and some killer disco stabs on 'Keep On Shining' and, well, you get the idea! Essential stuff for glittered-up groovers on mirrorball manoeuvres.
